The Seremi de Salud has issued a crucial statement regarding the drinking water supply situation in the commune of Antofagasta. The lack of water supply has led the health authority to classify the area as at risk, responding to the electrical failure that has impacted the northern desalination plant and affected around 66 thousand users.

As a result of this incident, Aguas Antofagasta has taken significant measures to alleviate the economic burden of those affected. It has been announced that no charge will be made for consumption corresponding to the month of December for those customers who have been affected by the massive supply cut. In addition, the company has decided to exempt from the overconsumption charge those who, in a gesture of solidarity, increased their consumption to assist others.

In the context of this emergency, the commune is on Yellow Alert due to the disturbance in the supply of drinking water. It is estimated that the complete restoration of the service is scheduled for next Friday, December 8, starting at 8:00 a.m.

The causes behind this supply interruption date back to an external electrical failure at the North desalination plant, which has generated problems in the production and delivery of the vital resource, impacting a large number of customers in various sectors of the city.

Under this measure adopted by the health authorities and the water supply company, resources will be mobilized to mitigate the adverse effects on the po[CENSORED]tion, its properties and the environmental environment.

The community is urged to stay informed about the updates provided by Aguas Antofagasta and the relevant authorities, in order to guarantee adequate management of this critical situation that affects the quality of life of the inhabitants of the commune.

Mayor of Antofagasta: “If this happened in a commune of Santiago, all the authorities would be involved”
The mayor of Antofagasta, Jonathan Velásquez, pointed out that the replacement of the supply would begin this Friday, but would only be fully replenished on Sunday.

“If this happened in a commune in Santiago, rest assured that all the ministers and all the authorities would be involved. I thought that a minister was finally going to arrive here in Antofagasta and nothing has happened,” he criticized in conversation with CNN Chile.

Supply points
76 drinking water distribution points have been set up in different sectors of Antofagasta. This is indicated by the official website of the water company Aguas Antofagasta, which today added new supply sites.
