Beijing's call before the UN Security Council to help Mali in its war against terrorism highlighted its support for the ruling Transitional Military Council in Bamako, and Beijing's move to establish its influence in the country that is witnessing a strong international influence struggle over it.
According to estimates by a financial academic specializing in political science, who spoke to Sky News Arabia, Mali is important to Beijing, not only in the usual Chinese economic expansion, but also in testing its military presence abroad.
"The international community should help Mali build its counter-terrorism capabilities, strengthen its support in terms of financing, equipment, intelligence, and logistics, and respect Mali's sovereign right to engage in security cooperation," said Dai Bing, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations.

China is strengthening its presence in the Horn of Africa.. What are the goals and motives?
In a new move by the "Chinese Dragon", China's special envoy to the Horn of Africa, Xue Ping, offered, on Monday, to mediate in the conflicts in the region.
"I am ready to offer mediation efforts for the peaceful settlement of disputes based on the will of the countries of this region," Ping said, during the China-led peace conference in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, in the presence of ministers and officials from Sudan, Somalia, South Sudan, Kenya, Uganda and Djibouti.
The Chinese envoy referred to the issues of "ethnicity, religion and complex and intertwined borders" in the region, adding that they can be difficult to deal with, as many of them date back to the colonial era.
Regarding the importance of appointing a special envoy for China in the Horn of Africa, Beijing believes that there are great Chinese interests in the region, and in recent years, the "Horn of Africa" has become a major region in which China is actively implementing the "Belt and Road" initiative, strengthening its presence and expanding its foreign interests.
China also established its first military base abroad in Djibouti in 2017 to perform guard duties in the waters off the coast of Somalia, in addition to the huge projects that Beijing has built in eastern Africa.
strategic goal
Regarding the role of the first Chinese envoy in the Horn of Africa and the goals of his presence in the region, Dr. Tariq Al-Bardisi, a political analyst and expert in international relations, said, "China's strategic goal is to strengthen its investment and economic role in the Horn of Africa," adding that this role will be translated sooner or later by imposing its control.political and military in this region.
Al-Bardisi added, in statements to "Sky News Arabia", that China is striving with all force to establish security in the Horn of Africa, to protect its trade, most of which passes through this important point, and it is also working to strengthen its presence in the areas of its national project, "The Belt and Road."
He explained that China is strengthening its presence in all regions of the world, not only in the Horn of Africa, because it knows that a clash with the United States is inevitably coming, but it is working at the present time to enhance economic and political influence.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited several countries in the Horn of Africa last January, including Eritrea, Kenya and the Comoros Islands. region in holding peace talks, achieving political consensus and coordinating joint action
parallel role
Ayman Samir, an expert specializing in international relations, believes that China is trying to show itself as the other face that is open to relations with Africa and opposed to US sanctions, after Washington imposed sanctions on African countries, including Eritrea, due to its interference in the Tigray region crisis and the war in Ethiopia, and this is what

The Chinese and Eritrean foreign ministers pointed out in their joint statement that the Chinese side stands against any unilateral sanctions against Eritrea, and opposes interference in the internal affairs of other countries under the pretext of democracy and human rights.
Samir indicated, in an interview with "Sky News Arabia", that the appointment of a Chinese envoy to the Horn of Africa confirms that Beijing is trying to play a political role parallel to the United States in African issues.
And he indicated that the Chinese move came in response to Washington's appointment of David Satterfield as its envoy in the Horn of Africa, and therefore Beijing is trying to present a message that it is playing a parallel role in resolving thorny issues in that region, perhaps more effectively than the efforts of the United States itself.
