Rabat - The Netherlands’ national football team has officially made it to the World Cup’s round of 16 after beating host Qatar 2-0 at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor on Tuesday. Cody Gakpo scored the Netherlands’ first goal in the 26th minute, becoming the first player to score in three consecutive games at the ongoing tournament. He also became the first Dutch player to score in his country’s three opening matches at a World Cup event. Frenkie de Jong scored the European country’s second goal in the 49th minute. The Netherlands got the ball in the net in the 68th minute but the goal was disallowed following a VAR review. The dutch squad out-possessed the Qatari team by a whooping 69%-31%, proving to be a tough opponent in Group A. Even though the Gulf team enjoyed some moments with the ball, they failed to get through their rivals’ strong defense. The Netherlands produced a remarkable performance in their final Group A match, which was no surprise as the European squad was the favorite to win today’s clash. The ongoing global tournament marked the Maroons’ first participation in a World Cup event. Qatar’s losses against Ecuador and Senegal made them the first host country to be eliminated from a World Cup after only two games. Meanwhile, the Netherlands won its game against Senegal 2-0 while their match against Ecuador ended with a 1-1 draw.
