The American authorities announced that a tiger in the New York Zoo had contracted the emerging coronavirus, after tests had proven positive.

 

 

A zoo in the Bronx in New York confirmed on Sunday that a tiger was infected with Covid-19, after transmitting the infection to it from the person responsible for its care, who did not show any symptoms at the time. The zoo said in a statement that the four-year-old tigress "Nadia", her sister "Azul", two tigers and three lions were all suffering from dry cough, but it was expected that she would make a full recovery.

"We have conducted animal tests with all precautions taken and will make sure that any knowledge gained of Covid-19 will contribute to a clearer understanding of this emerging virus," the statement sent to AFP added.

The same source said, "Although their appetite has decreased, these animals are improving thanks to the veterinary care in the park and are active and interact well with their guards. We do not know how this disease will develop in big cats because the animals may react differently to the virus, but we will continue to monitor them closely and expect them to recover. complete."

And the US Department of Agriculture stated in a statement that the tiger began to show symptoms of respiratory diseases, most likely after it had contact with a zoo worker infected with the virus. A zoo spokesman said this was the first case of COVID-19 in an animal in the United States and the first in a tiger globally.

The ministry added that there is no evidence to suggest that the disease can be transmitted from animals to humans, but it warned people with the disease to limit contact with pets and other animals.

And a German institute had stated that domestic animals, such as dogs and cats, do not play a role in spreading the new Corona virus, but it did not rule out the transmission of infection from humans to the domestic animal.
