Vivo seems to be trying to develop a new type of smartphone, one with a fold-out display. The Chinese manufacturer patented this idea to CNIPA (Chinese National Intellectual Property Administration), and from the documents provided to this authority we can see what Vivo engineers thought.

From the pictures we can see a long screen (in the style of the 21: 9 cinematic) that folds to the back of the device. It covers almost a third of the back, the rest being reserved for the 5-sensor camera (one of which appears to be a periscope) arranged in the shape of the letter X.

The design itself is new and unusual, the shape of this screen being reminiscent of the Motorola RAZR or Samsung Galaxy Z Flip series (even if the folding style is different).

We don't know yet what stage Vivo is in with this smartphone, but we certainly won't see a commercial version too soon (if technology will let them, maybe we'll see such a model by 2022-2023).
