The Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) and China made progress in strengthening relations at the III Ministerial Meeting of the Forum between the countries of the bloc and the Asian nation, which concluded this Friday. The conclave, held virtually, was led by Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, within the framework of the pro tempore presidency of Celac held by his country, and by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of China, Wang Yi. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi highlighted the progress in relations between Celac and his nation since the last meeting of this type in 2018. Wang stressed that no matter when the global landscape changes, the unity and cooperation between China and the bloc will never stop, and highlighted the achievements in the fight against the pandemic, as well as underlined the importance of compliance with the Joint Action Plans. Venezuelan Foreign Minister Félix Plascencia thanked China for accompanying the region in the fight against Covid-19 “through the supply of vaccines, medical equipment and even experts for the exchange of information and the improvement of procedures for control and the management of the epidemic within our territories ”, he highlighted. The Venezuelan official urged that the region continue to advance in the approach to the Asian country as an alliance for development due to the mutual interests that exist in this regard and ratified the support of his nation for the Global Development Initiative, presented by President Xi in the 76th Period of Sessions of the United Nations General Assembly (UN). Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez, for his part, asserted that "the incorporation of CELAC to the Belt and Road initiative launched by President Xi Jinping in 2013, will generate new opportunities for cooperation and mutual benefits." And, as did his Venezuelan counterpart, he highlighted China's supportive actions against the pandemic. On the Argentine side, Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero emphasized the "unprecedented dynamism" that relations between China and the Celac States have gained, as well as highlighted the importance of exchange, saying that it has emerged as the main platform for political dialogue and cooperation between both regions. Also present at the meeting were the presidential adviser minister for International Relations of Nicaragua, Michael Campbell, and the Bolivian Foreign Minister Rogelio Mayta, among other representatives of 28 of the 33 States that make up Celac. The executive president of the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF), Sergio Díaz-Granados, and the executive secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (Cepal), Alicia Bárcena, made an appearance at the conclave.
