The current presidential candidate for next year's elections, Enrique Peñalosa, has a long political career. At 67 he has already been mayor of Bogotá twice, representative to the Chamber and deputy of the Departmental Assembly of Cundinamarca.

The Colombian, born in Washington D.C, United States, studied liberal arts at Duke University and completed a diploma in advanced studies in public administration at the University of Paris II.

Peñalosa made his debut in national politics in the 1990 legislative elections, which made him a representative to the Chamber for Bogotá for the Liberal Party. At that point he renounced American citizenship, his country of birth.

In 1997, after two unsuccessful attempts and presenting himself as an independent, he won the post of mayor of Bogotá at the polls. His municipal mandate, between January 1998 and December 2000, focused on sustainable urban development, mobility systems and public services.

Since 2009 he joined the then Green Party, after joining the Progressive Party, together with the former mayors of Bogotá, Luis Eduardo Garzón and Antanas Mockus.
