GMC has lifted the curtains on the 2021 Yukon, the next-gen version of its big, brawny 3-row SUV. As with the current model, the new Yukon is available in both large and extra-large versions, with the latter, extended-length model called the Yukon XL. Outside of that aspect, however, this is an entirely new beast.

Like its siblings the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the 2021 Yukon is has been entirely revamped, its first entire update in six years. This all-new Yukon is bigger outside and within (especially within), and boasts new technology, more safety equipment, added amenities, and a new diesel engine option.

At its media unveiling in the winter playground of Vail, Colorado, GMC executives not only boasted that this is the best Yukon to date, but explained the components that make it so. They also touted the premium nature of this full-size SUV, especially in the top-spec Denali trim.

Here are highlights of the 2021 Yukon and answers to common questions about this 3-row American SUV.

What’s new about the 2021 GMC Yukon?

The 2021 model year marks an all-new version of the GMC Yukon and long-wheelbase Yukon XL. Each is bigger and roomier, especially the standard model. New technology and safety equipment includes a 9-camera system that makes parking and towing easier, magnetic ride control, and air suspension.

While air suspension is optional, all 2021 Yukon models move from an old live-axle design to a new independent multilink suspension. This grants better ride quality and more interior room in back. The top-line, luxury-laden Yukon Denali comes loaded with even more features and for the first time have their own exclusive interior treatment. Also significant is the introduction of the new GMC Yukon AT4.

What is the 2021 GMC Yukon AT4?

AT4 signifies GMC's premium off-road variants. The first GMC model to be offered in AT4 trim was the Sierra full-size pickup, and it has since made its way to the Acadia crossover and Canyon midsize pickup. This marks the first Yukon AT4 model. The AT4 Yukon includes 4-wheel-drive with a 2-speed transfer case, skid plates, 20-inch Goodyear all-terrain tires, and Traction Selection system with off-road mode. It’s also nicely equipped with heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, leather seating, and optional 4-corner air suspension.

What engine does the 2021 Yukon have?

As with the Tahoe and Suburban, the new Yukon will offer a choice of three engines. There will be new versions of the standard, 355-horsepower 5.3-liter V8 and 460-horsepower 6.2-liter V8, in addition to a new choice: a diesel in the form of GM's 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6. All models will use a 10-speed automatic transmission.

We tested the diesel powertrain last year in the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado pickup trucks and were thoroughly impressed. In those models, the engine makes 277 horsepower and an impressive 460 lb-ft of torque. The diesel excels at towing and is also more efficient. In fact, while official ratings are still pending, GMC says Yukons with that engine are expected to be the most fuel-efficient full-size SUVs available.

What about interior room?

As with its siblings the all-new 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the new Yukon and Yukon XL gain substantial interior room. Thanks to a 6.1 increase in overall length and nearly 5-inch increase in wheelbase, the standard Yukon model gains over 10 inches of third-row legroom (now totaling 34.9 inches) and over 10 cubic feet of additional cargo room behind the rear seat ( now at 25.5 cubic feet). GMC says those are gains of 41 percent and 66 percent, respectively. The longer 2021 Yukon XL, which is the corporate cousin to the Chevy Suburban, also makes gains though not quite as much. It has grown just under an inch in total length, translating to smaller but still appreciate gains in legroom and storage space.

At the media unveil, we hopped in the rearmost seat of a Yukon and found it substantially more comfortable than the current model - one of which we rode in the day before in that last row.

How many passengers can the 2021 GMC Yukon seat?

The new 2021 Yukon is again notable for its seating configurations available for the 2021. Base SLE models will still offer total seating for nine across when equipped with a 3-bench bench up front. That’s a good option for large families or buyers who need maximum passenger flexibility. Most, however, will probably opt for an 8-passenger setup or, when fitted with second-row captain's chairs, total seating for seven.

What safety features does the 2021 Yukon have?

GMC says the new Yukon will have “availability” of active safety and driving aids such as lane-keeping assist, surround view camera, a new rear pedestrian alert and digital rearview mirror (a real asset when towing). Furthermore, all models will now come standard with automatic emergency braking. Otherwise, it's a little too soon to know exactly which features will come with each trim.

What else is cool about the new Yukon and Yukon XL?

In addition to major new hardware like air suspension, a diesel engine and the AT4 model, there are several smaller aspects that are still notable in the forthcoming GMC Yukon. Among them is a power-operated center console that offers a lot of storage flexibility and lockable security up front, GMC's ProGrade trailering system, a 15-inch heads-up display, and the new Active Response 4WD System with an electronic limited-slip differential .

When does the new 2021 Yukon go on sale?

The all-new Yukon is set to arrive at dealers this summer. Standard Yukon models will go on sale first, followed by the larger Yukon XL.

How much does the 2021 GMC Yukon cost?

Pricing for the new Yukon will be announced closer to its on-sale date this summer. For reference, however, the current Yukon starts just over $ 50,000 and can crest the $ 80,000 mark for a loaded Denali.
