Presented in world preview at the Pebble Beach (California) Concours d'Elegance in a particularly attractive M40i First Edition version, the third generation of the Z4 is a tasty blend of elegance and sportiness.

For the first walkabout of its favorite roadster, the propeller brand unveiled heavy artillery under the Californian sun, shining the "spotlights" only on the tall and sporty variant of the Z4, baptized M40i First Edition and endowed of a nasty six-cylinder supercharged in-line. Give honour where honour is due ! The other, less spectacular versions will wait.

The first of the Z4 “new age” ropes is first of all racy lines, although more consensual and balanced than before, lines which visually break with the outgoing generation and with the founder of this beautiful saga, which shake up the codes established by her elders.

The hood is a little less monumental and the rear part a little less stocky than before. In fact, BMW put the church - or rather the passenger compartment - in the center of the village - or rather this roadster. The cockpit is not as far back and the silhouette of the vehicle is seen transfigured. Do not think, however, that aggression is no longer relevant: double bean grille more dilated than ever, like nostrils of a bull in front of which would be waved a red flag, hollowed out flanks hosting large scoops of air, “ascending” beltline…

Elegance is also skyrocketing, especially at the stern, which inherits very 8 Series vertical optics (sorry!), But also thanks to the adoption of front lights generously biting on the wings and the abandonment of the retractable hard roof, which had been introduced on the previous generation, in favor of a more "graceful" canvas roof. The buttocks are less plump, more slender. It thus contributes to the balance of the whole.

Graceful athlete

Obviously, the M40i First Edition version adds a layer in terms of sportiness, endowed as it is with particularly belligerent front and rear spoilers, as well as other body elements and “upsized” style (side skirts, cannulas of exhaust, rims, etc.).

Above all, there is a futuristic atmosphere on board, thanks to the appearance of a head-up display and, above all, to beautiful digital instrumentation. The central screen that extends the latter invites the same observation, while sports enthusiasts will primarily welcome the center console oriented towards the driver, the bucket seats as sculptural as they are enveloping or the superb M-branded steering wheel of this pleasure vehicle.

Let’s not let this category of readers get impatient any further. Under the voluptuous hood of this leader of the Z4, which rests, like the future versions, on a new platform, developed jointly with Toyota (it will serve as a rolling base for the future Supra), officiates a six-cylinder in-line biturbo . A block of 340 hp and 550 Nm which has already made its brilliance speak for itself within the Bavarian range. With a 0 to 100 km / h sprayed in 4.6 s and an average consumption announced between 7.1 l / 100 km and 7.4 l / 100 km (manufacturer data), it offers an interesting compromise between panache and efficiency. An "softener-line" ideal for seeing life from another angle, more radiant, more epicurean!

Love is fiery ...

The brake system and the M Sport electronic differential, as well as a sharper suspension, prerogatives of the Z40 M40i, will not be too much to "absorb" effectively the fiery six-in-line.

Further information (definitive "line-up", price list, etc.) will be communicated on September 19 and the official presentation of the Z4 to the public will take place in the process, at the Paris Motor Show in early October. It will nevertheless be necessary to wait at least early 2019 for its marketing.
