In 2017, Lucid Motors showed off an Air Electric car, but after a month when it debuts at the New York showroom, Lucid Air will be much more modified than the one shown three years ago. The biggest news about the company's first electric model is the fact that Air will be equipped with a 900-volt system. This was announced by company president Peter Rawlison. The top version of the Air promises 400 miles (644 km).

In an interview with the Electrek site, Rawlison says, "Tesla is 400 volts. Porsche introduces an 800-volt system. We are introducing a 900-volt system. ”This will allow the use of smaller diameter cables that reduce weight. During fast charging, the voltage of the charging station is very important, as is the case with the 800-volt Taycan. There are still many DC charging stations in the US with a maximum of 450 volts, while the gradual construction of higher-voltage stations, as is the case in Europe, is just beginning.

Like Tesla with Model Y, Lucid Motors also wants to make a significant improvement in drive efficiency - with a new transmission (among other things) that should improve system-wide efficiency. Therefore, 400 miles (about 640 km) can be achieved with a smaller (hence lighter and cheaper) battery pack than the originally announced 130 kWh package.

Rawlison did not say what the capacity of the battery would be, nor whether Air would be offered with a larger battery, since a 130 kWh battery was provided from the outset in the design of the car. The initial focus will be on the more luxurious versions, which will cost about $ 100,000. The $ 60,000 version, originally announced, does not specify a time limit for its debut.

But Rawlison wants to dethrone Tesla, believing that their creation can reach 4 - 5 miles (6.4 - 8 km) per kilowatt hour. Tesla promises 4.1 miles per kilowatt hour for Model Y.
