The U.S. Air Force issued a lightning strike order for fighter jets to take off after reports of an unidentified aircraft entering restricted airspace over Washington.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command said in a statement that its fighters were "in place and responding".

The plane, alleged to have violated the airspace of the US capital, "was not considered hostile at the moment," they said.

So far, there is no mention of what this aircraft was like.

Washington's airspace restrictions have been tightened in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York and Washington.
