The BMW group sold more than 142,000 electric cars and plug-in hybrids in 2018, up 38%, making it the number one spot in Europe in this segment.

BMW Group announced on Thursday sales data for electric cars and hybrid plugins for 2018, and the Germans reported a steady increase compared to 2017.

Thus, the brands of the German Group sold 142,617 electrified units, a 38% strong increase compared to 2017. Out of these, over 75,000 units were marketed in Europe, and officials claim that the BMW Group occupies the first place on the Old Continent in this segment, with a market share of 16%.

Globally, 9% of the electric cars and the hybrid plug-in that were sold last year had the logo of a builder within the Group.

BMW has ambitious plans for electric models and hybrid plug-ins for years to come. The Germans are preparing to launch several plug-in hybrid models in 2019, including the new generation BMW X5 PHEV and the new BMW 3 Series PHEV. Both models will have an electric range of up to 80 kilometers, calculated according to the old NEDC standard.

The BMW Group will also launch MINI Electric this year and will join Mini Countryman PHEV in the electrified models range. By 2021, the BMW Group intends to have a range of 5 electric modes (i3, iX3, i4, iNext and Mini Electric), and by 2025 the number of electric models and hybrid plug-in will increase to at least 25.
