The main limitation that prevents the Intel and AMD monopolies being disrupted on the Windows PC ecosystem was the impossibility of running desktop applications at an x86-like performance level using ARM processor configurations such as those provided by Qualcomm and other device chipset manufacturers phones.

Microsoft's provisional solution was Windows RT, a version of Windows 8 without access to regular desktop applications, for which users would have to wait long for the development of native applications. Following the inevitable failure, Microsoft has virtually turned its back on, launching Windows 10 on ARM, a version of Windows 10 that uses a combination of ARM64 native code for the operating system kernel and software emulator that provides desktop x86 compatibility. The disadvantage of the emulation solution is the drastic penalization of performance, featuring the first generation of Windows on ARM devices, equipped with chipsets originally developed for use with mobile phones.

Remaining without solutions to further optimize software emulators, Microsoft has decided to provide developers with tools to recompile x86 PC applications so they can run natively on devices equipped with 64-bit ARM processors. Cumulated with hardware improvements, using processors such as the new Cortex-A76 core developed by ARM Holdings, the next generation of Windows on ARM portables can deliver equivalent performance to Intel-based laptop systems, but at a lower cost .

New Windows on ARM devices have already appeared, such as the Lenovo Yoga C630 and the Samsung Galaxy Book 2, highlighting the very good battery life compared to Intel or AMD processor solutions.
