The struggle between Intel and AMD to see who offers the best processor is not only disputed in the middle and high range of consumer, but in the most powerful chips for servers. Today the two main competitors are the AMD EPYC and Intel Xeon, the latter being the ones who seem to lead the way.

The comparisons between Xeon and EPYC are inevitable, so there are several webs specialized in Benchmarking the first to draw conclusions about performance, but what is most surprising is the cost and consumption of the latest Intel Xeon.

The most powerful of all processors, the Xeon Platinum 8176 has a price of nothing more and nothing less than $ 8719. But even more uncontrolled is the consumption, of 670W with peaks up to 711W.

To give you an idea, there are washers with wash cycles that consume less than that amount, much higher than the E5 of the previous generation.

Tom Hardware's, the reference site for those who do not decide between AMD and Intel, makes it clear that once again AMD wins again in terms of value for money. Its EPYC 7601 is almost as powerful as the 8176 for much less money: $ 4,200.

It seems that although the best Intel Xeon processor is very powerful, the company has not squeezed too much when it comes to cutting costs. It is what makes the same Xeon line have cheaper alternatives, such as the 8160.

The curious figures of the Xeon chips of last generation should not hide bad news for its manufacturer. AMD has cut its distances in an accelerated way during the first quarters of 2017, and is already preparing for a new series of processors that will bring them even closer to the first position in the market. We will see if they succeed.
