Cape Town - In 2014, Volkswagen announced it will launch a seven-seater SUV concept called the 'Teramont'.

In October 2016, the company has revealed its new SUV will be called Atlas.

The Atlas is based on VW's 2013 CrossBlue concept SUV and evolved into what it is now - a large, premium family SUV.

Promotion via video

In a series of videos to promote the 2018 Atlas, VW is giving away information on the vehicle and how it fits in the market, as well as the automaker's position in America.

The first video is called "Chapter 1: Background" and tells of VW's history of producing family carriers, such as the legendary Combi. In the video the Combi is shown as a go-anywhere vehicle that stood back for no terrain.

Whether it is snow, mud, or gravel, the Combi is portrayed taking it on.

Following in the footsteps of its fore bearer, the Atlas will offer off-road capabilities despite its perceivable big size.

Engines and drive

When the Atlas comes to market 2018, it will feature all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive derivatives.

A 3.6-litre V6 will be driven by either FWD or AWD configurations, while a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine will only drive the front wheels.

No power figures are available yet.

What about SA?

Volkswagen SA says: "The Atlas was revealed about two years ago, and just got its name two weeks ago. It's an American vehicle and won't be making it's way here (South Africa) at all."
