El L0rd
Samsung is not only a manufacturer of smartphones, tablets, televisions, dishwashersor fridges... It is also one of the most important manufacturers of flash memory chips. The Korean company announces the industrial production of the flash memory chips3D Vertical NAND (3D V-NAND) with a capacity of 256 GB or 32 GB. A new generationof memory (the third) based on a succession of 48 layers of cells to three against 32for the second and 24 bits for the first. The layers are interconnected via 1.8 billionchannels. Each flash 3D V-NAND chip thus hosts 85.3 billion cells to reach thiscapacity of 32 GB. A surface smaller than a fingernail, these chips consume 30% of energy less than theprevious generation to 32 layers to store the same amount of data. This opens the door to SSD drives with ever larger capacities. In the aftermath,Samsung has introduced the SSD PM1633a. A flash memory drive prototype that bye xploiting these new chips offers a capacity of 15.36 terabytes (TB). At the commerciallevel, Samsung already offers disks with a capacity of 2 TB. The competition does not remain arms crossed. Intel and Micron have announced theintroduction of their 3D XPoint (Cross-Point) technology, while Sandisk Toshibashould deliver their own chips to 48 layers in September.
