Cristiano Ronaldo is now in the picture among the greatest ever. The Portuguese goal machine had already etched his name in the history books on several occasions, but his third Ballon d'Or elevates him up a rung into the pantheon of legends whose names will be evoked forever. Cristiano's third crown puts him on a par with Marco van Basten, Michel Platini and Johan Cruyff, names that speak volumes to football fans of all stripes, all over the world. Lionel Messi, with whom CR7 is vying to go down as the brightest star of their generation, is out ahead having won the accolade four times. Whoever ends up lifting more trophies, Ronaldo and Messi have amply earned a special place in football history. The likes of Alfredo Di Stéfano, Diego Maradona and Pelé, who for years have been cited mantra-like as the greatest to play the game, now have some added company and competition in the hall of fame. Messrs Zidane, Beckenbauer and a handful of others may also have a claim to be part of the conversation, but either way there can be no doubt that Cristiano Ronaldo will be remembered as a legend by those who had the privilege of seeing him play.
