  5. George Russell set the pace as Mercedes and McLaren both headed Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in Friday practice at the Dutch Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver was 0.061 seconds quicker than McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, with team-mate Lewis Hamilton third, 0.111secs off the pace, and the second McLaren of Lando Norris fourth. Championship leader Verstappen was only fifth fastest, 0.284secs off the pace, and team-mate Sergio Perez down in 11th. Fernando Alonso was sixth fastest, ahead of RB’s Yuki Tsunoda, Haas driver Kevin Magnussen, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Williams’ Alex Albon completed the top 10. After the first session started in wet conditions before drying, the second was held in sunny weather, although the strong, blustery wind continued, leading to a number of drivers to run wide at the first corner, because of a strong tail wind down the pit straight. But there was only one crash - Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg spinning on entry to Tarzan, skidding across the gravel trap and ending up in the barriers to bring out the red flag for a few minutes. On race pace, Norris was in impressive form in the McLaren, which has its first performance upgrade since the Miami Grand Prix in May. Norris led the way on the medium tyres, appearing on first impressions of lap times comfortably quicker than both Verstappen, Hamilton and Leclerc. On the soft tyre, Russell led the way on race pace, a fair bit quicker than Piastri. Red Bull also have an upgrade as Verstappen seeks his first win since the Spanish Grand Prix in mid-June, six races ago. In the first session, Norris was 0.201 seconds faster than Verstappen, with Hamilton third fastest, his fastest lap time affected by traffic. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, on medium-compound tyres rather than the soft used by those ahead of him, was fourth. The Spaniard’s running in the second session was curtailed by a gearbox problem after just seven laps. Link: https://www.bbc.com/sport/formula1/articles/cd9dygx2lwlo
  6. Below are all the key new model launches scheduled or predicted to land in 2024, we’ve grouped them in alphabetical order… Abarth may be known to most for its souped-up versions of the Fiat 500, but the title of Italian outfit’s most powerful road car ever goes to the new Abarth 600e hot electric SUV. It produces 237bhp with its electric motor and uses a mechanical limited-slip differential that should help minimise torque steer. Abarth claims the package “guarantees excellent driving stability, improved handling, and traction” in the 600e. The styling changes Abarth has made to the standard Fiat 600e include a blocky front bumper, enormous front splitter and large roof spoiler. The Abarth 600e’s 20-inch rims were needed to accommodate a new brake system, and have been wrapped in a set of high-performance tyres jointly developed by Formula E’s supplier, Hankook. 7. A horse had to be put down and 13 others are being cared for by animal charities after they were found emaciated and neglected in a field near Falkirk. One of the horses is understood to have been unable to stand properly in the field at Dennyloanhead and kept collapsing. Others were skinny and had a number of feet and skin issues including lice and mange. Animal welfare charity the Scottish SPCA said it was investigating the matter. More than 1,000 people have signed a petition to call for the owner to be prosecuted and asking for transparency and accountability from the charities involved. One horse owner, who does not wish to be named, went to see the neglected horses after reading a Facebook post about them. "I just burst into tears," she told BBC Scotland News. "I've seen some things in my time relating to horses but this is by far the worst I've ever seen. "Three of the horses were emaciated. They were covered with lice and mange and I have never seen horses with such neglected feet. "All of them had skin and feet issues." She said a lot of the horses were skinny and moved in a crablike manner as their back ends were not stable. "One horse had to be put to sleep as she kept collapsing and couldn't stand up," she said. The woman, who has five horses of her own, claims people had informed the Scottish SPCA about the horses in January but nothing was done. "They should have fresh water, shelter and older horses should have access to hay at all times, as well as grass," she said. Another woman, who found the horses and does not wish to be named, said: "I've never seen anything like it in my life and I've worked with horses since I was 12." She had gone to the field to look for a specific horse that she used to look after. "He was one of the lucky ones," she said. "He was half the horse, or three quarters of what he used to be but he still had life about him. "I'm still just really upset. I've found horses in a bad way but this was just extreme." Police Scotland officers assisted the Scottish SPCA at the property on Tuesday but said the matter was being dealt with by the animal charity. The Scottish SPCA confirmed there was "ongoing investigation" and said it was unable to comment at this time. The horses are understood to have been taken into the care of World Horse Welfare. The charity declined to comment. Link: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/credwg9294vo
  8. Membership of the main political parties continued to fall last year despite Westminster gearing up for a general election, according to newly published accounts. Labour lost 37,000 more members during 2023, leaving its total membership at 370,450 at the end of the year. Although it still has the most members of any UK party, the figure is significantly down from a peak of 532,046 at the end of 2019. The Liberal Democrats saw their membership fall by around 11,000 to 86,599, though the party said it had seen a rise in new members since its gains in July's general election. The Conservatives do not publish membership figures, but their income from membership fees fell from £1.97m to £1.5m. However, the Green Party saw its membership remain stable at around 53,000. Reform UK said its membership had grown "significantly", although it did not publish figures. A spokesperson for left-wing Labour campaign group Momentum blamed the fall in party membership on "the deliberate decisions of the Labour Party leadership to reject the transformative, po[CENSORED]r policies necessary to rebuild Britain". "In addition, the leadership has repeatedly attacked pluralism and the rights of party members in order to weaken the left and threaten independent-minded voices within the Party," the spokesperson said. "This may seem like smart politics at the moment but in the long-run Labour needs an active, engaged, mass membership to retain its political relevance." A Labour Party spokesperson said it had gained thousands of new members since the general election. "With Keir Starmer’s leadership the Labour Party has changed, returning politics to public service and a laser focus on rebuilding our country," the spokesperson said. "Our historic general election win was only possible because of this and the hard work and enthusiasm of our party members who shared Labour’s positive message across the country in the campaign." Despite Labour's membership dropping in 2023 and an increase in spending in preparation for a general election, the party ended the year with a smaller deficit than it expected. It reported a shortfall of £851,000 compared with an expected £2.5m, with party treasurer David Evans saying this was because of an increase in high-value donations and attendance at its annual conference. The Lib Dems ended 2023 with a surplus of £271,258, following a significant increase in donations and income from its party conference. The Conservatives also recorded a surplus of £17.9m, helped by a £10m bequest in the will of supermarket tycoon Lord John Sainsbury. The party had its most successful fundraising quarter in a non-election year at the start of 2023, according to its annual report. However, during the election campaign earlier this year, the Tories trailed Labour significantly in donations. In a turbulent year for the Scottish National Party, which saw the resignation of Nicola Sturgeon as leader and an ongoing police investigation into the party's finances, its membership fell by around 18,000 to 64,525. SNP membership has almost halved from a peak of 125,691 in 2019, after it saw a surge in support in the wake of the 2014 independence referendum. Party treasurer Stuart Campbell McDonald noted that members were facing cost-of-living pressures and said the SNP was seeking to pre-empt cancellations by offering options to reduce or skip payments. An SNP spokesperson said it remained "the largest political party by far in Scotland - with a membership greater than all other parties combined". Link: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c33n6311577o
  9. Japan has lifted its warning about a potential “megaquake”, one week after it was issued. The warning told people to be alert but not evacuate, saying the probability of a major earthquake was higher than usual but it was not imminent. The Japanese government said it was no longer asking people to take special precautions and they were free to “go back to normal lifestyles”. Following the warning, thousands of Japanese people cancelled planned trips and stocked up on essentials, while some high-speed rail travel was also affected. The Japan Meteorological Agency said, as of Wednesday, it had detected no seismic activity indicating any concerning changes in the presumed area where the megaquake could originate, Kyodo news agency reported. While last week’s warning has been lifted, the risk of a major earthquake is still present, disaster management minister Yoshifumi Matsumura said. He said no abnormalities had been detected in “seismic activity and crustal deformation” so the call for increased preparedness was lifted at 17:00 local time (09:00 BST). "But it doesn't mean the risk (of a major earthquake) has been eliminated," he told reporters. "We have been asking for special precautions, such as sleeping while being prepared to evacuate immediately. But we will no longer ask for these steps, and the people of Japan are free to go back to normal lifestyles," he added. Last week’s warning came hours after a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit off the southern island of Kyushu. Experts were put on heightened alert because of where the epicentre sat - at the edge of the Nankai Trough, an area of seismic activity which stretches along Japan's Pacific coast. The plate boundary sits between Suruga Bay in central Japan, and the Hyuganada Sea in Kyushu to the south. After last week’s warning, some shops were reportedly left with empty shelves or forced to put limits on purchases of items like bottled water. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida cancelled a trip to Central Asia. Some bullet trains also reduced their speed as a precaution. Previous Nankai Trough earthquakes have left thousands dead. These megaquakes have been recorded once every 90 to 200 years, with the last one occurring in 1946. Experts say there is a 70% to 80% chance of a magnitude 8 or 9 quake striking somewhere along the trough in the next 30 years, according to the Kyodo news agency. Worst-case estimates suggest more than 200,000 people could be killed in the earthquake and potential subsequent tsunami. Link: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cp8nyg23z2go
  10. George Santos, the disgraced former Republican congressman, is facing years in prison after pleading guilty to two federal counts of fraud. Santos, 36, appeared in court in Central Islip, New York, on Monday and admitted wire fraud and aggravated identity theft for stealing the IDs of campaign staff and misusing campaign funds. The judge estimated a sentencing range of six to eight years for the charges he admitted. His guilty plea cements the downfall of the novice New York politician, who was expelled from Congress last year after a brief, scandal-plagued tenure. "I deeply regret my conduct and the harm it has caused and accept full responsibility for my actions," Santos said in a statement read to the court. It reverses his denial last year of charges including lying to Congress about his finances and using campaign contributions for personal expenses. A plea agreement calls for Santos to make restitution of at least $374,000 (£288,000). The aggravated identity theft charge carries a two-year mandatory prison term that must be served consecutively with any sentence for the wire fraud charge. In court, Santos admitted to theft and applying for unemployment benefits that he was not entitled to receive. He also acknowledged making false statements and omissions on financial statements submitted to the House Ethics Committee and the Federal Election Commission (FEC). Santos was charged with 23 federal felony crimes including wire fraud, money laundering and the misuse of campaign funds. In December, he became the first member of Congress to be expelled in more than 20 years, and only the sixth in history. His brief tenure in office was marked by several controversies, alleged lies and allegations of fraud. Santos defeated a Democratic incumbent in 2022, flipping the district that encompasses parts of New York's Long Island and Queens. However, he faced a string of allegations that he had made false claims about a career on Wall Street, his university education, his Jewish ancestry, and his mother's death in the 9/11 attacks. The House Ethics Committee voted in 2023 to investigate Santos over several allegations that he had engaged in "unlawful activity" during his 2022 campaign, lied to Congress and engaged in sexual misconduct. Federal prosecutors filed 13 charges against him months later. These included seven counts of wire fraud, three counts of money laundering, one count of theft of public funds and two counts of lying to the House of Representatives. He was later charged with 10 additional counts, accused of stealing the identities of campaign donors and using their credit cards. The House ethics panel report was then released, accused him of misusing campaign funds for personal benefit - including on Botox, credit card debts, and subscriptions on the porn-heavy OnlyFans website. Two of his former aides have already pleaded guilty to fraud in connection to Santos' campaign. His sentencing is scheduled for 7 February. Link: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cdx6llg0359o
