  5. Twins at a Kent school have received identical A-level results, two years after gaining the same grades at GCSE. Nicola and Victoria Tsang, 17, achieved A* grades in economics, A grades in maths and physics and an A* in their extended project qualification (EPQ). "We’ve had different grades in our mocks in the run-up to the exams so I can’t believe it’s happened again," said Victoria. The sisters from Hong Kong studied at the independent Benenden School, in Cranbrook, but are set to head to different universities next month to study the same degree subject. In 2022, they achieved nine level 9 grades - the highest available - and two levels 8s each in the same subjects. “We saw that we had both got our first-choice universities so it was only then that we checked our grades. We compared our grades and thought not this again," said Nicola. Victoria is now off to the University of Cambridge to study law, while Nicola will study the same subject at the London School of Economics. “It will be different but it’s good to sometimes be separated and have my own life," said Nicola. But she added: "London is so close to Cambridge so we’ll see each other a lot! Students across the county received results in A-levels, T-levels, BTec Nationals and Level 3 qualifications on Thursday. A-level grades are expected to fall back down to 2019 levels in England, following mitigations put in place due to the pandemic. Most students getting their A-level results will have been in Year 9 when Covid hit, and will have sat GCSE exams in 2022 with extra help, like advance information about what to revise. At Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, in Faversham, pupil Ayodeji Adelusola received the results he needed to study at Swansea College of Art. He said: "We didn’t need the written exam guidance this time around. Compared to our GCSEs the teachers were more available to help anytime.” Lottie Jarvis, who studied at the same school, said she was "very happy" with her two A*s and a C. "I knew it would be hard. Overall I'm very, very happy I will be going to my first choice university in September, that's the main thing for me," she said. Not all students today will be heading to university, with some heading straight into the workforce, starting an apprenticeship or resitting certain courses. 6. The future success of a racehorse can be detected in the animal’s gut when it is just one month old, research suggests. A recent veterinary study analysed horses' poo, measuring the bacteria in the digestive systems of more than 50 thoroughbred foals over the first three years of their lives. The study found the more types of gut microbes a foal had at just four weeks old directly correlates to its future health, and its success on the racecourse. The findings, published in the journal Scientific Reports, add to an emerging biological picture regarding the importance of the trillions of microbes that live inside young animals’ digestive systems - and their role in long-term health. “Gut health is absolutely critical,” said lead researcher Chris Proudman, a professor of clinical veterinary science at the University of Surrey. “There is a growing understanding that what happens in human guts and in animal guts – horses, in this case - has a profound influence on many aspects of health and disease.” “It’s also about timing,” he explained. “The nature of the gut bacteria in those first few weeks of life predicts the future health, and the future performance, of these horses.” Young racehorses provide veterinary scientists with an ideal opportunity for studying the gut. Breeders and trainers of thoroughbred foals typically keep highly detailed records of each animal’s birth, diet and health, as well as any veterinary care they receive. “Anything we can investigate – to help them be in as good shape as possible – is a really good opportunity for us,” said Jane Black, co-owner of Chasemore stud farm in Surrey, which bred some of the foals involved in the research. Over the course of three years, owners and trainers recorded how their horses performed on the racecourse, including where they placed and how much prize money they earned. Meanwhile, scientists regularly collected faecal samples - by collecting horse poo from the stables - from each of the 52 young horses involved in the study. Researchers were then able to “DNA fingerprint” the samples, providing a regular read-out of the bacteria inside each animal's gut. We can see the amount of bacteria present and identify the different types,” explained Prof Proudman. “Then we compared that with our health data, and with our racing performance data.” The study concluded that the more diverse the gut bacteria in a four-week-old foal, the fewer health problems - particularly respiratory diseases - the horse suffered in later life. Researchers also found a direct relationship between the number of different types of gut bacteria in a month-old foal and its performance on the racecourse when it was older. Impact of antibiotics The team of scientists also investigated the long-term consequences of young foals being treated with antibiotics. Foals treated with antibiotic drugs had fewer types of bacteria in their guts, and subsequently went on to win less prize money in their racing careers compared to horses that had not received early antibiotic treatment. Prof Proudman said the discovery raised questions about the use of antibiotics, both in animals and in humans, in early life. “We need to think about things that happen in those first few weeks of life - to make sure that animals and humans' gut bacteria are in a good state at that stage. "That appears to set them up for a healthy life in the future,” he said. Professor Roberto La Ragione, also at the University of Surrey, said:  “The next part of our study will examine how we can minimise disruption of gut bacteria when antibiotics have to be used to treat infections [early on].” Link: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c1d75eqkdq5o
  7. coming back to the UK after a two-year hiatus and just in time for its 40th birthday, with its sharper, squatter take on the Nissan Ariya. But if a jumped-up, all-electric SUV isn’t what you want to drizzle your Nismo sauce over, how about an eight-year-old 370Z instead? It’ll fall a bit short on the tech, space and comfort side compared to its more generously proportioned sibling, but you do get many gauges, three pedals and a manual gearbox for starters. And then there’s the 3.7-litre V6 perched right ahead of the cabin, which not only sends an ample 339bhp to the rear axle but sings a quite brilliant song en route to a redline of 7,500 and a top speed of 155mph. Or 171, should you choose to axe the limiter. But perhaps the most astonishing thing about choosing this 370Z over the Ariya is the price; it’s very likely the latter will cost close to £60k when it launches next year. The second-hand 370Z we’ve shown you? You could possibly have three for the price of one Ariya. Frankly, choosing between a trip to the Maldives or a trip to Moorgate would be a harder decision. Though if you disagree, we’d love to know why in the comment section https://www.topgear.com/car-news/used-cars/celebrate-nismos-40th-birthday-very-clean-370z
  8. Ilkay Gundogan is being allowed to explore options to leave Barcelona this summer. The 33-year-old has only been at the Catalan club for one full season after opting to leave Manchester City on a free transfer. Despite being under contract for two more years, Gundogan has been told Barcelona will not stand in his way if he finds a suitable move. Clubs in England, Spain and Saudi Arabia are reportedly interested in the midfielder, who made 51 appearances across all competitions last season as Barcelona finished second in La Liga. Barca boss Hansi Flick addressed speculation after Gundogan missed the team's season-opening win against Valencia because of concussion on Saturday. Flick, who previously managed Gundogan with the Germany national team, said: "I know him very well. I appreciate the player and the person he is. "We spoke about everything, but it will stay between us. It's not for you to know. I have a feeling he will stay." Flick is keen to keep Gundogan, but the situation may be influenced by the complicated financial position at Barcelona. They have reportedly been unable yet to register new £51m signing Dani Olmo because of the Spanish league's squad cost control rules. Barcelona are also believed to be willing to sell striker Vitor Roque before the transfer deadline. They recently announced the departure of captain Sergi Roberto, while full-back Julian Araujo left to join Bournemouth last week. Meanwhile Gundogan has announced his retirement from international football. After making his debut for his country in 2011, he went on to play 82 times for Germany and captained the side at this summer's European Championship. Though he described that as a "highlight", he added: "Even before the tournament, I felt a certain tiredness in my body and also in my head, which got me thinking. And the games at club and national level are not getting any less." Link: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/c935kk15p0do
  9. Manchester City football star Jack Grealish has sent a special birthday gift to one of his team's oldest fans. Mary Spiers celebrated the milestone on Sunday and was handed a signed shirt from the Manchester City players alongside a video message from the midfielder. BBC Radio Manchester reached out to City after Mary's home at Bowerfield Court Care in Stockport appealed for people to send in cards for the birthday girl. More than 300 cards have now been sent to celebrate Mary's big day. Mary, who listens to every City game on the radio, said her love for the team had started when her family introduced her to them. "Oh my family love Manchester City, and I join in with them," she said. "I'm hoping to meet some of the players, shake hands with them, kick a football around." She said she felt "like a celebrity" after receiving so many cards. "I believe I've got a whole post-box downstairs," she said. "I keep saying 'I'm a celebrity get me out of here!'" Genesi Carroll, the care home's lifestyle coordinator, said they had never expected to get such a huge response, adding: "My first guess was around 80 or 90 cards. I thought that would be difficult, so to see so many arriving has been amazing." Link: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c4gd27q54epo
  10. While Russia's notorious Wagner mercenaries have been at the forefront of fighting in Ukraine's ravaged eastern town of Bakhmut, a close associate of Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin has been involved in another battle - for the hearts and minds of people in occupied areas behind the front lines. Alexander Malkevich has helped set up pro-Russian TV stations in key areas captured since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022. Through his links to Prigozhin the media boss has been involved in projects spreading Russian influence from Africa to the US and he is under Western sanctions for spreading disinformation. Formally, Malkevich's job is running state-funded TV in Prigozhin's home city, St Petersburg. But in the summer of 2022 he moved to then-occupied parts of Ukraine, making the southern city of Kherson his base. His main task was to set up pro-Russian television stations in regions captured since the start of the full-scale invasion. He has masterminded Tavria TV in Kherson, Za TV in Melitopol and Mariupol 24 in the eastern Donetsk region. The channels' reporting strictly follows the Kremlin's propaganda narratives. For example, a recent programme aired by Tavria TV reminded its viewers of the reasons given by Moscow to justify its war against Ukraine. "Russian President Vladimir Putin says the special military operation was a forced step, because Moscow had been left with no other choice. Such security risks had been created for Russia that no other reaction was possible," it said. One major obstacle facing Malkevich was an acute shortage of people willing and able to work for his channels. To train staff, he opened a "media school" in Kherson, became head of the journalism department at the local university and authored a textbook for aspiring media workers in Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine, called "Real Russian journalism for new regions". Some of his students joined his TV stations before becoming legally adults. Two reporters who started working for Za TV and Tavria TV respectively were both employed at the age of just 16. The BBC has chosen not to identify the two girls because of their age. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-65675102

  13. Tesla's highly anticipated FSD hardware 4, also known as HW4, will be installed in new vehicles any day. The company received European approval to sell its latest FSD hardware in the Model S and Model X vehicles. The timeline for deployment of the new computer that operates the most technologically advanced vehicle in the world has been a mystery. There was some speculation that Tesla may hold off launching the highly advanced system until Cybertruck's release. However, only a limited number of Cybertrucks are expected this year, with full production starting in 2024. Several Changes Incoming Several other changes are being made to Teslas according to the European Certificate, issued by the Dutch vehicle authority RDW, dated January 20, 2023. The maximum speed for the Model S is increasing to 174 MPH (280 km/h) from the factory. But owners can tack on even more speed with the optional Carbon Ceramic Brake Kit, which will boost the car to the previously mentioned 200 MPH (322 km/h). It sounds like the Carbon Ceramic Brake Kit option may soon become available. Hardware 4.0 Unfortunately, the European certificate doesn't reveal any details on what is included in Tesla's 4th generation Autopilot hardware. The system is expected to use 5-megapixel cameras, which will give Autopilot a substantial advantage in determining objects that are further away. The new hardware will also include a new FSD computer which is expected to be about 4x more powerful than the FSD computer in hardware 3 today. Additionally, HW4 is expected to include an HD radar, which could significantly improve FSD. In the same line item as the new FSD computer, Tesla also mentions a new GNSS antenna that is used for GPS. However, GNSS antennas also provide support for other systems such as GLONASS, Baidu, and Galileo. Other Changes to the Model S and Model X Other approved European updates are new Gen3 inverters and changes to the automatic headlights. In addition, the Model X will have a unified braking system and a new stay arm for the interior rear-view mirror. Finally, the cosmetic changes that rolled out in North America last month will also be implemented in Europe with the rear badging. Retrofits will not be Offered by Tesla It is yet to be known when the new hardware will debut, but Tesla will not retrofit the existing fleet. During the fourth quarter earnings call, Elon Musk said that the "cost and difficulty of retrofitting hardware 3 with hardware 4 is quite significant. So, it would not be, I think, economically feasible to do so." This could be due to the new HD radar, new power, or space requirements for the new computer or radar, or due to complexities with wiring harnesses. It would also put a huge burden on Tesla Service, which would have to upgrade millions of vehicles. There could also be more to hardware 4.0 that has not been disclosed. https://www.notateslaapp.com/news/1198/tesla-fsd-hardware-4-0-approved-in-europe-for-new-model-s-and-x
  14. As the Valorant skins wardrobe continues to expand, Riot has come under fire for failing to consistently create brand-new looking cosmetics for its FPS game. As an avid collector of Valorant skins, I too have failed to gel with any of the FPS game‘s recent thematics – but then again, I’m pretty picky. Following the release of the VCT Lock In capsule and the gorgeous Misericórdia knife, though, I asked Riot how they’ve taken player feedback and used it to spice up the new melee weapon. “The team is always happy to get feedback from players because it means players care,” lead producer for cosmetics Preeti Khanolkar tells me. “Sure, it’s nice to get positive feedback and we feel kind of bad when we hear that players are unhappy. But nothing is worse than silence or indifference! So, we always thank players for caring and giving us their thoughts! “We make a lot of skins and want to serve a really diverse audience, so we are intentionally not trying to please everyone,” she continues. “It’s impossible to make something everyone loves, and if you try to make something appealing to everyone then the reality is that it is bland and actually pleases no one. Every time we make a sci-fi skin, the players who prefer fantasy may feel left out. And vice versa if we make a fantasy-inspired skin. Likewise, if you prefer the Vandal, you might feel bummed when a theme you love actually has a Phantom instead.” That, in Khanolkar’s eyes, is what makes Misericórdia that little extra special – it’s just so unique that I’d go so far as to say when you see that knife, you know it’s a Valorant one at first glance. “What was pretty cool about this VCT Lock In knife (Misericórdia) is how many players expressed excitement that we had brought back the Xenohunter animations,” she tells PCGamesN. “And for players who prefer the Xenohunter look (more realistic and military), Xenohunter already exists so they’re good and can stick with Xenohunter. “We hope Misericórdia appeals to players who loved the Xenohunter knife animations but wanted a bolder, colourful style or love esports (and also want to contribute to the revenue share with the partner esports teams). Although these two knives share the same animation, they feel very different in how they are executed creatively. The team has done an amazing job making it feel similar yet distinct.” I fully agree. The Xenohunter skins (shown above) looked cool, but just weren’t for me as I lean more towards things like Sentinels of Light. Misericórdia is the perfect blend of sharpened combat knife and fantastical elements, and it’s an absolute must-have – just don’t check how much you’ve spent on Valorant, that’s not a must-have. https://www.pcgamesn.com/valorant/skins-please-everyone-are-impossible
