The tauros, a specially bred version of the long-extinct auroch cattle, is being introduced to Portugal's Côa Valley. On a cold, misty morning, a herd of dun-coloured Sorraia horses, an endangered local breed, graze on grass and small shrubs, their short and stocky bodies enveloped in the mist by the Côa river in the mountains of northeastern Portugal. As the sun rises and the mist starts to dissipate, it unveils the deep gorges of the Côa Valley, where vultures and eagles nest on the cliffs. Further south, a herd of large black and chestnut cattle with long horns run with agility. Known as tauros, these bovines are a specially bred version of the long-extinct auroch, the wild ancestor of the modern cow. The horses and tauros were released by Rewilding Portugal, a non-profit organisation whose mission is to create a 1,200 sq km (463 sq miles) wildlife corridor along the Côa River, improving habitat connectivity between the Douro River in the north and the Malcata mountains in the south. "We promote the coming back of wild species and replace the extinct ones, such as the auroch and the wild horse," says Pedro Prata, the head of Rewilding Portugal. Since it was established in 2019, the organisation has released two herds of 20 Sorraia horses and 15 tauros in an area spanning about 20 sq km (7.7 sq miles) to restore natural processes with natural grazing. Thousands of years ago, the wild ancestors of cattle and horses roamed freely across the Côa region, migrating in large herds and playing a key role in maintaining grassland ecosystems. The animals were so important that our ancestors decided to paint and engrave their images in caves and stones. Along the Côa Valley, representations of aurochs, wild horses and other creatures dating back 24,000 years have been carved on the schist outcrops. The area boats one of the largest concentrations of Paleolithic open-air rock art, and is recognised as a Unesco World Heritage site. With its long horns and massive body, the auroch features prominently in the engravings. Once the largest land mammals in Europe, aurochs went extinct in the 17th Century due to overhunting and habitat loss. The last of the species died in Poland in 1627; one of the first recorded cases of extinction. But recent efforts are trying to bring back these mighty herbivores. Former President Trump arrives for a press conference at 40 Wall Street after a pretrial hearing at Manhattan criminal court March 25, 2024, in New York. A New York judge has scheduled an April 15 trial date in Trump’s hush money case. Judge Juan M. Merchan made the ruling Monday. Former Watergate prosecutor Nick Akerman said Wednesday that the gag order recently imposed on former President Trump in his New York hush money trial is “so unusual.” “I think what the viewers have to understand is, this is so unusual,” Akerman told CNN’s Fredricka Whitfield in an interview. “This never happens, in over 50 years of law practice, both as a prosecutor, a defense lawyer.” Akerman emphasized the unprecedented nature of how Trump’s case has unfolded, and that his attacks on Judge Juan Merchan could get the former president in “harm’s way.” Not only is the gag order itself unusual, Akerman noted, but Trump’s conduct in the courtroom that warranted the action from Merchan stood out to the attorney. “The reason it’s not done is because once you start disparaging the judge, disparaging people in the courtroom, you’re putting yourself in harm’s way. Because that’s the judge who’s going to sentence you. It’s the judge who could send you to jail or give you probation,” Akerman said. Merchan imposed a gag order on Trump on Tuesday, preventing the former president from making public statements about the court staff, witnesses and other figures in the case. Google's Pixel 8a is expected to launch in May at the annual I/O developer conference. We've already seen the renders of the Pixel 7a successor and now more details about the handset have surfaced on the Web. The Pixel 8a is said to come with a higher refresh rate display compared to the older model. It could be powered by the Tensor G3 chipset to match the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. The Pixel 8a is expected to include support for wireless charging and DisplayPort output. Android Authority, citing an inside source, claims that Google will bring some improvements to the Pixel 8a over the Pixel 7a. The upcoming model will reportedly come with a 6.1-inch full-HD+ (1,080x2,400 pixels) OLED panel with 120Hz refresh rate, and 1,400 nits of peak HDR brightness, matching the specifications of the higher-end Pixel 8. The 120Hz refresh rate would be a notable upgrade compared to the Pixel 7a's 90Hz screen. As per the report, the Pixel 8a will be powered by the Tensor G3 chipset like the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. The chipset could be a slightly different version than the Pixel 8 series. The regular G3 uses FOPLP (Fan-Out Panel Level Packaging) whereas the Pixel 8a's G3 reportedly uses IPoP (Integrated Package on Package).
