  1. Amazon has been granted a patent for protecting gadgets such as smartphones and tablets from accidents by deploying miniature airbags and jets of air. The patent application was published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office last August, with Amazon having filed for it during the February of 2010, which was granted recently. The patent details a system that utilizes a gadget's built-in gyroscope, camera, accelerometers and other onboard sensors in order to determine if the device has entered an airborne state. If it has, the technology will change the trajectory of its fall, as well as releasing airbags to reduce potential damage. https://www.tomshardware.com/news/Amazon-Smartphones-Tablets-Patent-Airbag,19746.html

  3. What would you do if given unchecked power? It’s a question for the ages, but here’s a better one. What if you were made, created even, to be given unchecked power? That’s one of the moral quandaries offered by Neuronet: Mendax Proxy, a visual-novel, narrative game title from Dream Harvest. And if you’re the kind of person who’s put off by a genre that doesn’t promise high-octane, no-holds-barred action, just give it a chance. Let’s dig into Neuronet: Mendax Proxy and find out why you should be giving this cyberpunk thriller a go. Story Neuronet: Mendax Proxy offers what we feel is a genuinely intriguing, unique premise. In most cyberpunk stories, the all-powerful AI that slowly becomes sentient is relegated to the background as a tool of the real villain or one in and of itself. When it’s ‘good’ or just ambiguous, we usually find out more based on how our actual protagonist interacts with them. https://www.pocketgamer.com/neuronet-mendax-proxy/review/
  4. The downside of digital ownership has reared its ugly head for enjoyers of Ubisoft's open-world multiplayer racer The Crew. The publisher has revoked its licence for those who owned it on Ubisoft Connect, almost destroying fan ambitions to revive the game in both an offline and online format. The Crew was pulled from sale back in December, with Ubisoft revealing that the servers would be shut down at the beginning of April. Frustratingly, despite a large portion of the game being doable in singleplayer, The Crew remained an online-only endeavour throughout its decade-long lifespan. That had already rendered the game unplayable, but it seems Ubisoft is determined to take things one step further to stamp out any attempts to continue playing it past its expiry date. Fans began to notice earlier in the week that the licence to the game had been snatched away from them. A message at the top of the game's library page reads, "You no longer have access to this game. Why not check the Store to pursue your adventures?" It's also been moved to its own individual section in player libraries, listed under "inactive games". Apparently booting the game directly from the installation directory will still launch the game, but only in a demo mode. https://www.pcgamer.com/games/racing/ubisoft-is-stripping-peoples-licences-for-the-crew-weeks-after-its-shutdown-nearly-squandering-hopes-of-private-servers-and-acting-as-a-stark-reminder-of-how-volatile-digital-ownership-is/
  5. Britain’s favourite broadcaster David Attenborough once said: “Anyone who thinks you can have infinite growth in a finite environment is either a madman — or an economist.” But our political leaders don’t seem to agree. Both our major political parties have made growing the economy a key metric for their success in government. So what is economic growth? How did it become so central to our understanding of the economy? And should we really be striving for infinite growth on a finite planet? Ayeisha Thomas Smith is joined by Kate Raworth, economist and author of Doughnut Economics, and Michael Jacobs, professor of political economy at the University of Sheffield. https://neweconomics.org/2024/04/new-economics-podcast-should-we-be-going-for-growth
  6. Pricing for the 2025 Kia K5 is out, and the mid-size sedan's EX trim level now starts $5000 more than before at $35,645. The EX's price rises as the $3600 Premium package is now standard, bringing a new curved dash-mounted display, a Bose stereo, 10-way power driver's seat, and more. The rest of the lineup's pricing rises too, with the entry-level LXS up $1400 to $28,145 and the top-spec GT's up $2000 to $35,145. The 2025 Kia K5 has received various updates, from design changes to an entirely new base engine. While we learned about those revisions earlier this year, Kia has not released pricing for its mid-size sedan. Along with the relatively normal year-over-year increases, the po[CENSORED]r EX trim level is an outlier, as its staring price rises a sizable $5000 to $35,645. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60480006/2025-kia-k5-price/
  7. A ban on importing hunting trophies to the UK has moved a step closer to becoming law with a vote by MPs. Body parts of elephants, bears, lions, hippos and zebras are among those currently allowed to be brought back from hunting trips. This is the third attempt to pass a new law to tackle the issue and the bill is still at an early stage. Opponents argue profits from trophy hunting go towards protecting endangered species. But environment minister Rebecca Pow said the government would support the bill to ensure trophy hunters "are not putting additional pressure on already threatened species". https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-68635251
  8. Chelsea paid out more than £75m to football agents and intermediaries over the 12-month period to February 2024, as Premier League clubs spent a combined £409.5m. Manchester City's outlay on agent fees exceeded £60m, according to figures released by the Football Association detailing payments made by Premier League, EFL and National League clubs. The figures may also include transactions which clubs entered into before the start of the reporting period in February 2023. Chelsea (£75.1m) and Manchester City (£60.6m) far outspent their Premier League rivals, with Manchester United the third-highest spenders (£34m) - having paid less than half of Chelsea's total. It comes after Chelsea's spending on transfer and loan fees since Todd Boehly took over ownership of the club in the summer of 2022 exceeded the £1bn mark. Among the deals, the signing of midfielder Moises Caicedo could rise to a British record £115m. Liverpool (£31.5m), Arsenal (£24.7m) and Aston Villa (£21.1m) all spent in excess of £20m on agent fees, with Tottenham (£19.7m) and Newcastle United (£18.8m) close behind. Premier League clubs' £1bn losses in 11 charts Listen to the latest Football Daily podcast Luton Town spent the least among Premier League clubs, paying out £2m, as last season's relegated top-flight clubs Leeds United (£13.2m), Leicester City (£8.1m) and Southampton (£7.5m) had the highest costs among current Championship teams. The total combined outlay among Championship clubs was £61.3m, compared to £5.1m in League One where Derby County(£434,465) spent the most. Wrexham, owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, led League Two spending with £347,027 paid to agents and intermediaries. Overall payments by current League Two clubs amounted to £2.4m. Only Forest Green Rovers (£266,191) spent more than half of Wrexham's outlay among rival fourth-tier clubs. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/68794902
  9. Ireland and Spain have reiterated their intention to forge an alliance of countries that will soon recognise Palestine as a nation state. The Irish taoiseach, Simon Harris, and Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, vowed on Friday to muster international support for a two-state solution in Israel and Palestine. The two leaders held bilateral talks in Dublin to inject momentum into a diplomatic offensive inside and outside the EU. Recognition of Palestinian statehood “is coming much closer”, Harris told a joint press conference. Ireland would move with Spain and other countries “when the time is right”, he said, without giving a timeline or naming the other countries. When we move forward, we would like to do so with as many others as possible to lend weight to the decision and to send the strongest message. The people of Israel deserve a secure and peaceful future. So do the people of Palestine. Equal sovereignty, equal respect, in a region where people of all faiths and all traditions live together in peace.” Sánchez said waiting for others to take the initiative was not acceptable, referring to war in Gaza and Ukraine. “The path is made by walking … we have to do so in the hope that others will do so.” Dublin and Madrid will move in a coordinated way and raise Palestinian statehood at the European council next week, they said. Earlier on Friday, Sánchez met Norway’s prime minister, Jonas Gahr Støre, in Oslo and reiterated Madrid’s intention to recognise a Palestinian state by July. Støre said Norway also stood ready to recognise a Palestinian state. “The question is when and in what context,” he said. He welcomed the Spanish premier’s efforts to consult and coordinate with like-minded countries. “We will intensify that coordination in the weeks to come,” Støre said. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/apr/12/ireland-and-spain-reiterate-plan-to-form-alliance-to-recognise-state-of-palestine

  16. Driven by government subsidies and support, China's domestic developers of electronic design automation tools (EDA, or software used for designing integrated circuits and circuit boards), are witnessing a surge in sales, and can therefore increase their R&D investments. After the U.S. restricted sales of advanced EDA programs to Chinese entities last year, Chinese chip designers had to increase the adoption of domestic EDA tools. As a result, Empyrean Technology and Primarius Technologies have reported sales jumps of over 30% in the first three quarters of 2023, reports DigiTimes. Empyrean Technology is more financially successful than its rival, primarily because of massive subsidies from the government. For the nine months that just ended, Empyrean Technology earned ¥171 million ($23.523 million), but the government subsidies totaled a whopping ¥129 million ($17.745 million). This subsidy was a crucial factor in the company's profitability. On the other hand, Primarius Technologies, despite receiving ¥9.38 million ($1.29 million) in grants, has not been able to curtail its financial losses, which have increased to ¥28 million ($3.851 million). With ample government help, Chinese EDA tool developers can invest massive amounts of money in research and development, so Empyrean and Primarius allocated 70.56% and 67.47% of their sales to R&D, respectively, in 2023. These figures dwarf the relative R&D spending of Synopsys and Cadence, which have maintained their R&D spending at a more conservative 30-40% of their sales. https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/semiconductors/chinese-chip-design-software-devs-receive-massive-government-support
  17. An earlier version of the article stated that the keyboard's software was sending key presses. However, in a closer look, it seems that the Cloud Driver software doesn't send the key presses to the Alibaba server but only how many times each key has been pressed. Assuming no malicious intent, it's possible that the keyboard maker wanted this sort of data in order to see the lifetime of its keyboard's keys or see which keys it needs to make more durable. However, doing this sort of tracking without user permission still seems like a violation of user trust. It could also be a violation of privacy laws in the European Union, where such consent needs to be explicit. https://www.tomshardware.com/news/mantistek-gk2-collects-typed-keys,35850.html

  20. The Fallout TV show is here and, here's a bombshell, it's good. Really good. So good, in fact, that it's naturally got people asking if Bethesda's televisual ambitions stop there. Might the company follow up Fallout with a Skyrim show? A Starfield series? A blistering 4K HDR adaptation of Wayne Gretzky Hockey 3? Sorry, Todd Howard says no. Chatting to IGN at Fallout's glitzy red carpet premiere, Howard was asked if Bethesda had plans for TV shows based on its other series. His answer? "There's nothing in the works. Everybody asks, like, about Elder Scrolls, and I keep saying no also." https://www.pcgamer.com/movies-tv/todd-howard-no-skyrim-show-for-us-even-as-critics-go-wild-for-fallout/
  21. England’s housing crisis has reached boiling point. Soaring rents are leaving millions vulnerable to “no-fault” eviction and homelessness, as landlords evict tenants to capitalise off higher market values. Far from providing stability, our housing system has become a source of hardship for many. At the sharpest end are the 109,000 homeless families, including over 140,000 children, stuck in often unsuitable temporary accommodation (TA) while awaiting permanent housing. These in-between homes often lack adequate facilities and pose safety risks: three-quarters suffer from poor conditions, with one in five facing hazards such as faulty wiring and fire risks. Most appallingly, 55 children have died at least in part because of conditions in their TA since 2019. Over two-thirds of children have inadequate access to basic amenities like cooking or laundry, whilst more than one in three lack their own bed to sleep in. The instability and unsuitability of temporary lodging TA only compounds the hardship already faced by homeless families and children, especially more vulnerable groups such as survivors of domestic abuse. But alongside this human crisis, the situation is causing a severe strain on local authority finances across England. Councils face mounting financial challenges and a surge in homelessness, which they have legal duties to address. With six local authorities since 2021 going bust, and one in 10 expected to join within the next year, councils are pressed for choices and strapped for cash. Recently, this government offered a last-minute £600m funding top-up aiming to prevent further council bankruptcy. However, this stopgap measure is not enough to plug the estimated £4bn funding gap. UNDERLYING ISSUES The root causes of this financial strain are twofold. Firstly, rising rents coupled with the freezing of the local housing allowance (LHA) TA subsidy from 2011 to 2024 have left councils grappling with a growing gap between housing costs and government support. In London, the LHA TA subsidy now covers only 69% of total TA expenses. Secondly, the chronic lack of available social housing has forced councils to increasingly rely on more expensive forms of TA, particularly private rented sector (PRS) lettings, bed and breakfasts, and hostels. This reliance on costly PRS placements has been a driver of the surge in TA expenditure across England, from £1.4bn in 2018/19 to £1.8bn in 2022/23. London boroughs have been hit hardest, with the capital’s TA spend reaching £1bn annually, comprising 60% of the national expenditure, despite containing only 16% of the English po[CENSORED]tion. At the same time, London’s councils’ TA costs have risen by 30% over the past five years. The use of nightly paid dwellings, an expensive last resort for councils, has also risen sharply. Nightly paid accommodation are self-contained housing units rented from landlords on a nightly basis and managed by private bodies or individuals. Councils’ net spending on this across England has nearly doubled from £55m in 2021 to £107m in 2022, rising another £50m last year. At NEF we have submitted Freedom of Information Act (FOI) requests which show a third of responding councils had more than doubled their gross spending on nightly paid TA between 2018/19 and 2022/23. London councils in particular have rapidly increased their reliance on this inadequate and costly form of accommodation. Over the past five years, Croydon has spent a net of £53m on nightly paid TA alone. At the same time, the council is cutting £200m from vital services like social care and education and hiking council tax by 15%, in an attempt to balance its books after going bust in 2022. The use of nightly paid TA is exacerbating councils’ financial turmoil whilst confining families to often poor-quality accommodation, including converted office space described by tenants as “uninhabitable”. Local authorities are compelled to divert substantial funds towards what tends to be substandard TA, straining their budgets and compromising their ability to adequately finance other vital services. https://neweconomics.org/2024/04/cost-of-housing-homeless-people-skyrocketing-for-councils
  22. Lamborghini unveiled the Huracán STJ, a final special edition for the 10-year-old supercar. Stickier tires, new dampers, and more aggressive aero bits improve upon the Huracán STO, shaving over a second off the lap at Lamborghini's test track. Production is limited to just 10 units, with the STJ being offered with a choice of two configuration and livery options. Lamborghini's newest special edition looks the business. The Italian marque just unveiled the Huracán STJ—the final special edition of the 10-year-old supercar. Visually, the STJ is less conspicuous than you might expect from a swan-song Lamborghini, but the real changes are under the skin. Arrivederci, Huracán The STJ is a Huracán even more focused on setting lap times than the already heavily track-focused STO that it's based on. According to Lambo, the mechanical grip has been considerably improved thanks to a new set of four-way-adjustable dampers that replace the previous active setup on the standard car. The company claims that added adjustability means the new dampers can be run with lower spring stiffness without losing control or steering feel. Additionally, Lamborghini worked with Bridgestone to develop a set of Potenza race tires for the 20-inch center-locking wheels. And just like the STO, the STJ is rear-drive only, and power comes courtesy of a dry-sumped 631-hp 5.2-liter V-10 tucked behind the cabin and mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Changes didn't stop with dampers and tires, with Lambo also tweaking the supercar's aerodynamics. The front splitter is slightly revised, and new dive planes were added. Lamborghini dialed up the rear wing by three degrees to increase the aerodynamic load compared with the production model without compromising the balance. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60457916/lamborghini-huracan-stj-finale-details/
