  1. Liz Truss will blame the UK’s economic problems on “25 years of economic consensus” as she doubles down on the policy proposals that helped trigger financial turmoil and caused her to be ousted from Downing Street after just 49 days. The former prime minister will give a speech at the Institute for Government on Monday, almost exactly a year since her government’s “mini-budget”, which caused the pound to crash and ultimately led to her downfall. Speaking days after it emerged that the UK economy shrank by 0.5% in July, Truss will say the UK’s current economic problems are not her fault. “I believe that the reason for the problems we have is the 25 years of economic consensus that have led us to this period of stagnation,” she will say, according to extracts from her speech briefed in advance. “And I believe it is vital that we understand that and shatter that economic consensus, if we are to avoid worse problems in the future.” Truss will add: “Some say this is a crisis of capitalism – that free markets are responsible. But that’s not borne out by the facts. Quite the opposite is true. The fact is that since the Labour government was elected in 1997, we have moved towards being a more corporatist social democracy in Britain than we were in the 1980s and 1990s.” Truss has spent the past few months attempting to rehabilitate her political reputation after her turbulent time in No 10 – the shortest ever term for a prime minister. Last week she gave an interview to the Mail on Sunday in which she accused the Bank of England and the Office for Budget Responsibility of being part of “an orthodoxy that was gradually moving to the left”. In her speech on Monday she will say: “Free market economists went off to lucrative jobs in the City, allowing academic institutions and thinktanks to be captured by the left.” Truss’s opponents reacted to news of the speech by renewing their criticisms of her premiership. Daisy Cooper, the Liberal Democrat deputy leader, likened the speech to “an arsonist giving a talk on fire safety”, while Labour urged her successor, Rishi Sunak, to block her planned resignation honours list. The former Bank of England governor Mark Carney said Truss created “Argentina on the Channel” not “Singapore on Thames”. Carney was in Montreal on Saturday at the Global Progress Action Summit, and made the comment in a reference to Argentina’s history of being unable to services its debts and Truss’s mini-budget of unfunded tax cuts. Truss is writing a book about her period in office entitled Ten Years To Save the West, which is due to come out next spring. But further details about that time emerged over the weekend in extracts from a forthcoming book by the Telegraph’s political editor, Ben Riley-Smith. According to the book, senior officials at No 10 and the Treasury had to intervene to persuade Truss to abandon many of her policies after being warned by City executives that the UK would enter a financial crisis within days if she did not. Extracts revealed that several people at the top of government – including the incoming Treasury permanent secretary, James Bowler, and the cabinet secretary, Simon Case – were brought in over the course of a single day last September to warn her of the potential consequences of her policies. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/sep/17/liz-truss-speech-uk-economic-problems-left-consensus
  2. Any night owl who has spent 30 years of working all day would be dreaming of retirement. Such is the case for Ernie, an owl with a “big personality”, who will be quitting after delighting guests at Warwick Castle for three decades. He has been soaring and swooping around the West Midlands attraction’s turrets on average for twice a day, every day, for 30 years. An African Verreaux’s eagle owl with a wingspan of 165cm, Ernie has taken flight about 20,000 times and most recently starred in the Falconer’s Quest, the UK’s largest bird of prey show. He will be performing his final flight over the castle during the Easter holidays before retiring to the Yorkshire Dales with Hawk Experience, which organise the bird handling displays at the castle. Liam Bartlett, the general manager of the historical attraction, said: “Ernie is a much-loved member of staff at Warwick Castle. “He has a big personality, is often stubborn and likes to freestyle his shows, but that’s why we love him. “We’re excited for him to spend his twilight years in the stunning Yorkshire Dales with other feathered friends.” The Verreaux’s eagle owl is the largest owl species in Africa and the only type to have pink eyelids. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/mar/24/ernie-the-owl-retire-30-years-warwick-castle?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other
  3. I was pleased,” Southgate said. “I don’t like losing matches. I thought there were lots of very good individual performances from players who’ve hardly played for England. I thought our regular players were very good. With 15 minutes to go we’re thinking we’ve managed to see a lot of new players. We’ve had our share of the game. We’ve had as many attempts on goal as they have. The difference in the end was one moment. That is the ruthlessness at this level. “I know when you lose there will always be a negative reaction. But, given all the changes that we’d made, I thought the crowd were with the team. They could see a lot of young players going in and doing well. I’m not down on the performance.” England struggled to hurt Brazil without Kane, who will return to Bayern Munich for further treatment on his injured ankle. Bukayo Saka was also missed on the right flank. It was difficult for Ollie Watkins to shine as Kane’s deputy. “We’re playing a top team so chances are going to be limited,” Southgate said. “But I was really pleased with the players who went in. We need to find out about them. We need to know where we might head if we didn’t have Harry for a big match. I thought Ollie did a good job. He didn’t get that clear chance on goal but a lot of his work was very good. It was a good experiment.” England had to make an early change at right-back, Kyle Walker making way for Konsa. Southgate, who hopes that Cole Palmer and Jordan Henderson will be fit to face Belgium, could not offer clarity on the issue that forced Walker off. “He isn’t sure whether it’s just tightness,” he said. “I expect he’s feeling it’s a little bit more.” https://www.theguardian.com/football/2024/mar/23/gareth-southgate-praises-englands-performance-in-defeat-by-brazil?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other

  5. A small boat carrying 280 migrants has landed in Spain's Canary Islands. The vessel arrived on the remote island of El Hierro, some 380km (238 miles) off Africa's western coast, on Tuesday. Rescue workers said those onboard were of sub-Saharan African origin and it was the largest number of migrants ever to arrive in the archipelago in one go. The crossing to the Canary Islands is one of the most commonly used and dangerous routes to Europe for migrants from Africa. "I've never seen a boat with so many people on board," journalist and former migration adviser Txema Santana said on social media after the vessel arrived. Since the start of the year, 140 people have died or disappeared trying to make the crossing, according to the International Organization for Migration. Use of the route has increased in recent years as tighter controls have been put in place to stop people crossing the Mediterranean from Africa's northern coast. Between 1 January and 30 September this year, a total of 14,976 migrants arrived in the Canary Islands, an increase of 19.8% on the same period in 2022, according to figures from Spain's interior ministry. On Monday, Senegal's navy said it had intercepted four boats over three days with more than 600 people on board. In August, at least 60 people are believed to have died on a boat that was eventually found off Cape Verde, an African island nation that sits on the migration route to the Canaries. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-67002541

  8. If you’re itching to play the latest Call of Duty game that releases today but you’re in the sad state of not owning a game console to play it on, we have a deal for you. At Target, you can pick up the $299.99 Xbox Series S online or in-store, and you’ll receive a free digital copy of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (no, not the 2009 classic; Activision is just reusing old names now). Buying that game by itself normally costs $70, so this could be a great promo for you to take advantage of before it expires Saturday, October 29th, at 11:59PM PT. The Series S is a great console with or without this deal. It’s small, so it won’t hog a bunch of space in your entertainment center. And despite being significantly less powerful than the Series X (in addition to having no disc drive and half the usable storage for downloads), the Series S could be worthwhile if you mostly play digital games, including those on Xbox Game Pass. Here’s our review. There are a couple of Sonos home theater bundles that are discounted, and I want to tell you about them. While the discounts aren’t blowing our minds over here, it could be the price cut you’ve been waiting for before buying a set for yourself. First up is the Surround Set with Beam, which has the first-gen Beam soundbar (normally $399) and two One SL speakers ($199 a pop). It’s priced at $678 through Sonos, Adorama, and B&H Photo, which is just a little over $120 off the cost of buying each speaker separately. The Premium Immersive Set with Beam that includes the second-gen Beam, two One SL speakers, and a third-gen Sonos Sub costs $1,277, down from $1,596. That’s obviously a much higher-costing setup, but the price drops are noteworthy for some of these products. It’s like getting $90 off the second-gen Beam, $150 off the Sub, and $40 off each One SL speaker. HBO Max’s excellent discount on prepaid yearly subscriptions is about to end on October 30th. Paying yearly instead of monthly usually saves you some money, but this promo will save you as much as $75. Here’s the deal: getting one year of HBO Max with ads costs $69.99 (usually $120) or $104.99 (usually $180) for the ad-free plan that lets you download content and stream select content in 4K. Most people should find plenty of entertainment (at least a year’s worth, to take full advantage of this deal) with HBO Max. You can watch The Sopranos there as well as a host of movies and exclusive TV shows for a range of tastes. It has The Rehearsal, the excellent Harley Quinn animated series, Succession, House of the Dragon, Euphoria, Barry, Los Espookys, Our Flag Means Death, and a lot more. Some more deals for your Friday Tile is offering a pretty fantastic discount on a four-pack of its Pro Bluetooth trackers. Normally it costs $99.99 for the bundle, but you can get it for $49.99. These offer water resistance and the longest range of all its trackers (up to 400 feet). It touts year-long battery life with replaceable coin batteries. Read more about them here. For all of Friday, October 28th, you can get Samsung’s bean-shaped Galaxy Buds Live wireless earbuds in the royal blue color scheme for $79.99 at Best Buy. Other colors cost $20 more. These aren’t Samsung’s latest earbuds, but they offer surprisingly good sound quality in a low-profile design. Read our review. Dell is selling a 24.5-inch 1080p IPS gaming monitor with a fast 240Hz refresh rate for just $149.99. It’s not a bad price at all if you value speed over superb picture quality. It includes a height-adjustable stand, and it has two HDMI 2.0 ports, one DisplayPort version 1.2, and a handful of USB-A ports. https://www.msn.com/en-us/entertainment/gaming/the-xbox-series-s-comes-with-the-latest-call-of-duty-for-free-at-target/ar-AA13tIDN
  9. Just a few days ago, gamers were shocked to see this graphics option disappear from the Steam version without warning. The Resident Evil brand is on everyone's lips thanks to the good work of Capcom in recovering the iconic adventure of Leon S. Kennedy with the remake of the fourth installment. However, the franchise made headlines just a few days ago due to the sudden disappearance of ray tracing in the PC versions of Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 7. Now, with a new statement from the studio, we can confirm the suspicion of many players: it is a bug. To all users of Resident Evil 2 / Resident Evil 3 on Steam. We are aware of a problem with the ray tracing option, which does not appear in the graphics and presets menu," Capcom explains in the tweet that you have just above of these lines. "We will address this in a future update and apologize for the inconvenience." Beyond the absence of ray tracing, it is important to note that another of the problems detected by Capcom has to do with the option of 3D audio. According to the image that accompanies the Twitter message, this sound system also does not appear in the options dedicated to audio in Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, but a correction is expected along with the bug related to ray tracing activation. Resident Evil 4 Remake continues to achieve great sales figures The Capcom team will now focus on resolving these issues, but it's important to remember that, until recently, they were locked into the most recent Resident Evil 4 Remake. After all, the title has been available for PC, PS4, PS5 and Xbox Series since March 24 and, in a few weeks, it has managed to sell up to 3 million units. And the thing does not end here, because we will be attentive to the quarterly results of the company to see the impact of this installment in the saga. https://www.3djuegos.com/juegos/resident-evil-2-remake/noticias/capcom-confirma-que-sospechabamos-resident-evil-2-3-desaparicion-ray-tracing-pc-no-que-error
  10. Preston Brashers, Senior Tax Policy Analyst at Heritage Foundation has a new analysis on the relationship between the Biden Administration’s higher taxes, but lower tax receipts. In 2023, despite implementing tax hikes amounting to over $60 billion, U.S. tax revenues have fallen by almost $400 billion, marking a 13% drop in tax receipts from the previous year. This unusual decline can be attributed to several factors: Slow Economic Growth: Economic growth has slowed, leading to stagnant incomes and reduced tax receipts, especially in capital gains taxes. Explosion of Green Tax Credits: The Inflation Reduction Act introduced numerous green tax credits, which have proven to be more costly than anticipated, potentially exceeding a trillion dollars over a decade. IRS Regulatory Activism: The IRS expanded the size of green tax credits through regulatory interpretations, allowing for loopholes that led to a significant increase in electric vehicle sales through leases. COVID-19-Era Employee Retention Credits (ERC): ERC, initially created for pandemic relief, has seen widespread abuse and fraudulent claims, with billions paid out long after the pandemic ended. Flaws in Budget-Scoring Process: Budget models used by government agencies do not account for economic growth and can be mani[CENSORED]ted by lawmakers, leading to claims of deficit reduction while the national debt continues to grow. The United States will sooner or later be faced with a serious reality check: the sea of debt being accumulated at a breakneck pace is not sustainable. https://uspolicy.org/heritage-biden-raised-taxes-but-tax-revenues-are-way-down-this-year/
  11. link: https://www.bbc.com/mundo/noticias-42918181 If there is a creature that, due to its biological characteristics, has attracted the interest of scientists, it is the salamander, since it is the only vertebrate animal capable of regenerating. In the group of these amphibians, the Mexican axolotl -or Axolótl- (Ambystoma mexicanum) stands out for its extraordinary processes to regenerate amputated limbs and other organs and tissues of the organism. It has been observed, for example, that if these animals lose a limb, they are capable of regenerating it in a matter of weeks, with all its bones, muscles and nerves in the appropriate places. Even more fascinating, the researchers say, is the axolotl's ability to repair its spinal cord when it is injured and make it function as if it had not been damaged. It can also repair other tissues -such as retinal- and heal wounds without leaving scars. Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) Not only that. This amphibian, which is in danger of extinction in its natural habitat, has also attracted the interest of researchers because of the relative ease with which it can reproduce. That is why, for about 150 years, scientists have been cultivating these animals in the laboratory and trying to discover the secrets of their extraordinary biological processes and their potential applications in human medicine. For example, in the repair of brain or spinal cord injuries and the prevention of cardiac scars. Now an international team of scientists has discovered one of its secrets: the axolotl has the largest genome that has been sequenced to date, much larger than the human. This amphibian has 32 billion base pairs of DNA, 10 times larger than the human genome, which has 3.2 billion base pairs of DNA.
  12. Auto Moto Show 2022, the region’s largest exhibition for custom cars and bikes, roared its way back into Abu Dhabi at the weekend. Adnec hosted the event, which, alongside the usual enthusiasts, attracted major international companies involved in the manufacture and supply of parts and products. Much of the centre’s ground-floor space was devoted to the gathering, with sections including modified and classic cars and bikes, buggies, fan clubs and even caravans. Radio-controlled vehicles were also involved. Alongside competitions for best-in-show cars and bikes, a freestyle drifting event provided plenty of noise and action for spectators in a tyre-strewn area. None of that inside though, as strict instructions were given to the effect that no exhibitor was allowed to spark up his or her engine while the show was taking place. Visitors got the full-on automotive experience as they came through the doors, with a Hulk and Iron Man-themed display shouting for attention right from the off. This is the event’s first year in this format. With spectators showing up in full force, Auto Moto is likely to be a highlight of the calendar for the region’s petrol heads in future years. This isn’t the first time Toyota has made the argument that a multifaceted approach including hybrids and other alternatives will reduce emissions faster, and the company is not alone in this belief. Adam Withnall, chief executive of UAE car-buying comparison site Drive Ninja, is also convinced the way forward is electric, but sees hybrid options as being the best short-term solution. On a practical level, he envisages the time when we see the number of electric cars on the road dwarfing petrol and diesel options as being some way off. “Hybrid cars are a good stop gap,” he told The National. “Electricity is the way to go, but the infrastructure is not there yet.” When it comes to hybrids, there are several options available to customers looking to get a car that has a lower environmental impact than the traditional variety. Mild hybrid vehicles contain a battery and an electric motor alongside a petrol or diesel engine, with the latter providing the primary means of propulsion. Plug-in hybrids also have a petrol or diesel engine, but a more powerful battery allows them to travel a much greater distance on electric power alone. Electric cars, meanwhile, rely solely on their battery pack, so there is no fossil-fuel back-up if you run out of power. https://www.thenationalnews.com/lifestyle/motoring/2022/10/09/auto-moto-2022-extravaganza-roars-into-abu-dhabi/
  13. We all, from time to time, have hiccups. And sometimes it seems like it will never happen. Hiccups consist of involuntary contractions of the diaphragm - the muscle that separates the thorax from the abdomen, which plays a crucial role in breathing - followed by a sudden closure of the vocal cords. The medical term for hiccups is singult, a derivation of the Latin word singult, meaning "to catch one's breath while crying." For most of us, hiccups are annoying things that don't last long. But in some people it can be persistent and last for more than two days. The good news is that there are simple ways to relieve the common hiccups and treatments for when they persist. What causes hiccups? Hiccups are caused by a reflex arc: a neuromotor pathway that translates a sensation into a physical response. Sensations in this arc come from the brain, ear, nose and throat, diaphragm, and organs in the chest and abdomen. The sensation signals travel to a part of the brain that, along with the upper part of the spinal cord, is known as the "hiccup center." From the hiccup center, signals return to the diaphragm and the muscles between your ribs (intercostal muscles), causing them to contract. Contraction of these muscles draws air into the lungs, and this sudden inhalation causes the opening between the vocal cords, or glottis, to close tight. This quick closing produces the typical hiccup sound. Triggers Anything that affects the arc can cause hiccups. The most common trigger is the stretching of the stomach that occurs when we eat a large dish or consume fizzy drinks. This means that the sensation signals we have in the stomach can trigger the reflex arc. Hot chili peppers, alcohol, smoking, and overexcitement can also trigger the reflex arc and cause hiccups. Hiccups have also been observed in healthy fetuses during follow-up prenatal ultrasounds. In fact, some researchers believe that hiccups are a mechanism that helps the lungs prepare to breathe soon after birth. How long does it last? And what can we do about it? A hiccup attack that lasts less than 48 hours is usually not worrisome. These types of attacks tend to end on their own. When it doesn't resolve on its own, there are ways to suppress the reflex arc. It is believed that the Valsalva maneuver (explained in the graphic below), drinking ice-cold drinks, and light pressure on the eyeballs can increase the activity of the vagus nerve that goes to the brain. https://www.bbc.com/mundo/noticias-65189233

Instead, he found work creating advertisements for magazines and movie theaters then became interested in animation. In 1922, he opened a film studio called Laugh-O-Gram but it struggled financially and shut down in 1923. That same year, he moved to Hollywood and formed Disney Brothers Studio with his older sibling Roy. After producing various short, animated cartoons, the studio started making a series in 1927 about a character Walt had developed called Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. However, the next year, in what was a major blow, Walt lost the rights to his po[CENSORED]r creation and many of his employees were poached in a corporate dispute. In response, he developed a new character originally dubbed Mortimer Mouse before it was decided Mickey would be a better moniker. Mickey Mouse made his official debut in a 1928 short film titled “Steamboat Willie,” one of the first cartoons ever to use synchronized sound effects. The rodent quickly became a star, and soon there were Mickey Mouse Clubs for children as well as merchandise and a comic strip. When Mickey spoke for the first time, in 1929’s “The Karnival Kid” (his words were “Hot dog, hot dog”), Walt was unhappy with how the character sounded and went on to lend his own voice to the mouse until 1947’s “Mickey and the Beanstalk,” when he said he was too busy to continue doing so. 3. Disney produced propaganda films for the U.S. government during World War II. disney propaganda 2 Sheet music for the Disney Film “Der Fuehrer’s Face.” (Credit: Galerie Bilderwelt/Getty Images) During the war, Disney employees created educational films for various federal agencies, including a 1942 animated short, “The New Spirit,” commissioned by the Treasury Department to encourage people to pay their income taxes as a way to support the war effort. The film, which starred Donald Duck, was shown in thousands of movie theaters and even earned an Academy Award nomination. The Disney studio also made training films for the American military, and created, free-of-charge, more than a thousand insignia for military units; the designs centered around established Disney characters as well as new characters. Although Walt initially was reluctant to risk tarnishing his image as a non-political entertainer by producing blatantly propagandistic works, his team eventually turned out animated shorts such as 1943’s “Der Fuerher’s Face,” which made fun of the Nazis and again starred Donald Duck. Additionally, after reading the 1942 best-seller “Victory Through Air Power” by Major Alexander de Seversky, Walt, driven by his own patriotism, decided to adapt it as a 1943 live action-animated feature of the same name in order to win support for the book’s theories—considered controversial by some U.S. military officials—about strategic long-range bombing. Both President Franklin Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill saw the film, which reportedly made an impression on them
  18. Google Japan seems to be having some fun this weekend as the company has just introduced Gboard Bar, it is a physical keyboard that has all the keys lined up in one row, a weird concept, but Google has an explanation for it, and the benefits associated with it. Google's Gboard Bar is the Keyboard You Did Not Know You Would Want Google Japan has stated that the Gboard Bar lets users find the keys that they are looking for a lot faster. The company even has an explanation for the inspiration that brought this product into the market. For years, the primary focus has been on the word "key" in "keyboard" and that is as far as the focus went. However, in Japanese, the word translates to キーボード (kii-bou-do), so with キー (kii (key) getting all the attention. Google has decided to focus on the ボー (bou) part, which, on its own translates to bow (staff/bar). Using this, Google managed to come up with a new design that allowed for improved navigation when you compare it to a traditional keyboard by putting all the keys on a traditional keyboard. Google Japan has said that Gboard Bar allows the user to minimize the need to look in all directions as they have to do on a traditional keyboard. They can just start at the beginning and go through each key until they find what they are looking for. Google Japan has also talked about how there are ergonomic and health benefits associated with the new keyboard as well. For starters, it allows the user to stretch their arms and legs naturally when they are typing. The Gboard Bar also comes with some added features like becoming a physical extension of your limbs, ultimately keeping it easier for you to press buttons that might be out of arms reach. Users can also go ahead and use it on hiking excursions as a trekking pole or a ruler to measure objects and the best thing is that it is super-easy to clean as you will only need to go for just a single wipe. For now, Google only has plans for a standard layout but is looking into a version with emojis and also a gaming model with LEDs. If the rest of the post wasn't obvious enough, one must understand that this is more or less a joke. Google Japan has no plans of mass producing the new keyboard but you do have a Github page where Google has uploaded all the data that will allow you to make your own Gboard Bar should you wish to. Alternatively, you can just use the perfectly capable and one of the best keyboard apps known as Gboard, available on both Google Play Store and App Store.
