When Georgie Thorogood’s date made a sleazy joke about “horsey girls carrying whips”, she knew it was time to make a hasty exit. After meeting Tom through a dating app in the summer of 2021, she had been hoping for some polite conversation over a few drinks, maybe some romantic chemistry if she was lucky. What she got was a two-hour rant about his ex-wife and some creepy innuendo. “I knew straight away he wasn’t for me. I politely told him I didn’t want to see him again, but he took the rejection really badly. I work in music communications and at the time I was setting up a festival. He started getting aggressive and telling me that I was destined to fail,” she says. “I don’t know how he could possibly know that, as he didn’t ask me a single question about myself all night.” Her bad experience, which came after months of mindless swiping, was the final straw for Georgie, 40. “Not only did I find dating apps soul-destroying, I was also happy with my single life, so I decided to quit them completely and focus on that instead,” she says. “I found so many of the men on apps had serious issues, too. Another guy became abusive when I turned down an offer to meet for a walk in a remote location because it didn’t feel safe. You never know who people are online.” While Georgie acknowledges that people with emotional baggage aren’t exclusive to dating sites, she feels the apps give them a chance to hide their bad behaviour. “The problem is that you don’t have to reflect or make changes when something goes wrong – you can just swipe to the next person.” By the autumn of 2021, Georgie, who lives in Essex, had thrown herself into work and was enjoying spending her free time with friends and family. Then, out of the blue, she met Mark Bamford, 50, who lives in London and owns a music tech company. “He was introduced to me at the British Country Music awards,” she says. “I was on the board of directors for the awards and someone suggested he might be a good sponsor for a festival I was working on.” The pair immediately hit it off and exchanged numbers. In January 2022, they went on their first date, in London, and a relationship soon developed. “When you meet someone in person, you know their vibe. He’s warm and engaging and we both like to talk a lot. He’s very easy to be with, but you don’t get that when you’re trying to communicate over an app,” she says. Mark, who also dabbled in dating apps before meeting Georgie, feels the same way. “I didn’t have to worry that she was still on an app, swiping left and right for weeks, which made things more relaxed. Of course, people can multidate with or without an app, but I think that tech nudges you in the direction of temptation,” he says. “The scandal of apps is that the business model is the opposite of the stated goal. They need to get more users, not get people together. The more they attract people back, the more money they can make by selling data.” The apps offer users a potential army of attractive suitors at their fingertips, so it’s no surprise that they become more picky. Claire Davis, 43, a personal trainer from London, stopped using them in 2015 because she hated the “shopping lists” of demands, as well as the lack of boundaries. “One guy told me he wanted children on the first date, which was really intense,” she says. “It was like he was checking off things he wanted in a partner. I’d recently had an ectopic pregnancy and him mentioning children so soon was such an uncomfortable topic. Because the apps are so disposable, he could just swipe again if he didn’t find what he was looking for straight away.” She met her partner, James Davis, 50, also a personal trainer from London, in a pub, shortly after quitting the apps. “I had come out of a divorce and was a bit broken,” she says. “I’d vaguely known James years before, but when we saw each other in 2015 through some mutual friends there was a spark.” He was based in Ibiza and she was in Surrey, but it didn’t stop them from connecting. “I wasn’t sure what I wanted after my divorce, but because we met in real life I had the chance to work that out over time,” Claire says. “On a dating app, you only really get one shot.” Six months later, they became a couple and they married in 2017. They now run a health and fitness business in London. link: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/jan/18/dating-burnout-meet-the-people-who-ditched-the-apps-and-found-love-offline

You know the drill: a new EV gets all hyped up, and the limited number of early editions sell out quickly. That means secondhand auctions are where you need to look if the FOMO is real for you. In this case, the 2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup Edition 1 is all sold out, and given the $112,595 price when new, the current bid of $102,000 over on Bring a Trailer represents a discount. (BaT, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos.) With the auction continuing until Saturday, January 21, we suspect the numbers will climb before it's all over. Whatever powertrain it carries, the Hummer remains a controversial vehicle. Reviewing the the 1000-hp, all-electric version, we once called it a "definitive riposte to the 'EVs are wimpy' crowd." If you're sad you missed out on the chance to buy one of the $100,000-plus GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 monsters, time to turn that frown upside down. A 2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup Edition 1 with about 2000 miles on it is currently listed for auction at the site Bring a Trailer—which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos. Since you can't even place an order for a new Hummer EV right now—and when you can, deliveries might not happen until 2024—secondhand sales like this are the only way to get one in your driveway any time soon.Originally priced at $112,595, this Hummer includes all of the headline-grabbing features that GMC is packing into the over-the-top EV: CrabWalk four-wheel steering, the 200.0-kWh Ultium battery pack, underbody cameras, Watts to Freedom (WTF) launch control, and an Infinity Roof with four removable tinted glass Sky Panels. Three motors (one in front, two on the back axle) provide a zero-to-60-mph time of approximately three seconds when the WTF mode is engaged. SuperCruise, an Extreme Off-Road package, Bose audio, 18-inch wheels, and a MultiPro tailgate are all included. Once GMC opens up Hummer EV orders again, you could spec a new one to have similar specs to the Edition 1, but some features are exclusive to this model, like an Edition 1 badge. The contrasting Interstellar White exterior paints and Jet Black and light gray faux leather interior also identify it as an Edition 1 model. This 2022 GMC Hummer EV is located in Washington State and has a clean title. It has had only one owner and a clean CarFax report. The seller is including a travel battery charger with 110V and 220V connectors and a home charging unit. link:https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a42557086/2022-gmc-hummer-ev-pickup-edition-1-bring-a-trailer-auction/

In early 2020, ornithologist Noah Strycker found himself walking amongst several thousand chinstrap penguins on Elephant Island, a remote blip of snow-covered rock just off the Antarctic Peninsula. He was there to carry out a census of the island's penguin colony, which hadn't been properly surveyed since 1970. "I'll never forget the sight, sound, and...smell," joked Strycker, a graduate student at Stony Brook University in New York, as well as a professional bird watcher, and author. The survey that he and his colleagues eventually produced revealed that chinstrap penguin numbers are in decline. But despite this, this species actually forms one of the biggest colonies of penguins on Earth — gathering in the millions in some Antarctic locations. But counting these animals doesn't daunt Strycker, who has actually developed something of a hobby for this task. It started a few years ago when he found himself pondering how many starlings were contained in the magical murmurations that these birds form, and which swell and undulate across the evening sky in many parts of the world. "They are quite beautiful. It almost looks like smoke," Strycker told Live Science. "And it just gets you wondering, how many of them are there?" The answer, he discovered, was that there are roughly 1 million in the average murmuration, all soaring and swooping in unison. That discovery spurred Strycker on to answer an even more ambitious question: beyond birds, what's the biggest group of animals ever recorded on Earth? Answering this question takes us to some very interesting places — back into the past, up into the sky, down into the ocean and sweeping across desert plains. It offers magnificent proof of the abundance of animal life on Earth, but it also points to humanity's role in reducing — and, unexpectedly, increasing it too. Thousands, millions, billions When Strycker embarked upon his unusual quest, he shared his discoveries in his book called "The Thing with Feathers: The Surprising Lives of Birds and What They Reveal About Being Human(opens in new tab)" (Penguin Random House, 2014). As the title suggests, birds are high contenders for the title of most numerous group. At 1 million per flock, starling numbers are jaw-droppingly high — but they're easily outnumbered by chinstrap penguins, which can reach 2 million on the South Sandwich Islands off Antarctica. But those charismatic penguins fall far behind the red-billed quelea: this small species that can gather in single flocks of several million over savannah and grassland areas in sub-Saharan Africa — so huge that they seem to roar as they pass overhead. "I think they're considered now to be the most abundant species of bird in the world. And they do make very large flocks in the millions — tens of millions, maybe hundreds of millions," Strycker said. Their explosive success as a species may be helped by agriculture's spread: these birds consume grass seeds, but they'll also settle for fields of cultivated grain. As such, they're loathed by embattled farmers who lose huge shares of barley, buckwheat and sorghum harvests to these birds every year. Quelea are so numerous that observers say it can take five hours for a flock to pass overhead. But here is where this species yields to an even more populous bird that once was abundant across American skies: the passenger pigeon. "There are stories of people standing there and watching a single flock of passenger pigeons fly over them for hours or days at a time, which is crazy!" Strycker said. One gathering in 1866 was recorded as 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) wide and 300 miles (482 km) long, and was estimated to contain about 3.5 billion birds, based on the number of pigeons per square mile and extrapolated across the size of the flock. Of course, that was before hunting drove this successful species to extinction. So surely with that grand tally, this pigeon of yore takes the prize for most populous creature on Earth? Not so fast: there are quite a few other contenders to consider still. Shifting our gaze down from the skies, and into the ocean's depths, there are records of fish species — specifically Atlantic herring — gathering in schools that exceed 4 billion — the passenger pigeon's closest contender for the reigning title so far. Other species don't come close to the numbers tallied up so far — but they're still so impressive to behold that they deserve a mention. These include migratory mammals like springbok and wildebeest in southern Africa that have, in the past, gathered in herds exceeding 1 million, forming vast processionals that march across the sun-beaten savanna for weeks. These are further outstripped by their winged mammalian cousins: in Texas, there's a single cave that's home to more than 20 million Mexican free-tailed bats, whose closely-packed bodies transform the cave's interior into a rippling, writhing mass. Yet there's one animal whose enormous gatherings leave all these other contenders behind in a trail of dust. (Or rather, a trail of decimated vegetation and ravaged crops.) link: https://www.livescience.com/largest-group-of-animals.html

Jacinda Ardern has announced she will quit as New Zealand prime minister ahead of this year's election, saying she no longer has "enough in the tank" to lead. Ms Ardern choked up as she detailed how six "challenging" years in the job had taken a toll. Labour Party MPs will vote to find her replacement on Sunday. The shock announcement comes as polling indicates the party faces a difficult path to re-election on 14 October. Ms Ardern, 42, said she had taken time to consider her future over the summer break, hoping to find the heart and energy to go on in the role. "But unfortunately I haven't, and I would be doing a disservice to New Zealand to continue," she told reporters on Thursday. Ms Ardern will step down by 7 February. If no would-be successor garners the support of two-thirds of the party room, the vote will go to Labour's lay membership. Ms Ardern became the youngest female head of government in the world when she was elected prime minister in 2017, aged 37. And a year later she became the second elected world leader to ever give birth while in office, after Pakistan's Benazir Bhutto in 1990. She steered New Zealand through the Covid-19 pandemic and its ensuing recession, the Christchurch mosque shootings, and the White Island volcanic eruption. Ms Ardern said the past five-and-a-half years had been the "most fulfilling" of her life, but leading the country during "crisis" had been difficult. "These events... have been taxing because of the weight, the sheer weight and continual nature of them. There's never really been a moment where it's ever felt like we were just governing." National Party leader Chris Luxon was among those who thanked Ms Ardern "for her service to New Zealand". "She has given her all to this incredibly demanding job," the opposition leader wrote on Twitter. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described Ms Ardern as a leader of intellect, strength and empathy. "Jacinda has been a fierce advocate for New Zealand, an inspiration to so many and a great friend to me," he wrote. Canada's leader Justin Trudeau said she had made an "immeasurable" difference to the world. But while Ms Ardern was often seen as a political star globally, opinion polls suggest she was increasingly unpo[CENSORED]r at home. She led the Labour Party to a landslide election victory in 2020, capitalising on her government's strong early response to the pandemic. Who is Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand's PM? How New Zealand went 'hard and early' to beat Covid-19 But the latest opinion polls put her personal po[CENSORED]rity at its lowest since she was elected, and approval of her party's performance similarly low. In 2022, Ms Ardern told the BBC her declining po[CENSORED]rity was the price her government had paid for keeping people safe from Covid-19. However, she has also been confronted with a cost-of-living crisis, national fears about crime, and a backlog of election promises put off during the pandemic. Reaction to her announcement has been varied. One local from her own Auckland electorate told the NZ Herald Ms Ardern was "running away before getting thrown out", blaming her for increased crime and rising living costs. For others, like Auckland Pride's Max Tweedie, she is "one of the greatest prime ministers in New Zealand's history". Those are sentiments shared by New Zealand actor Sam Neill, who said Ms Ardern had faced "disgraceful" treatment from "bullies" and "misogynists". "She deserved so much better," the Jurassic Park star wrote on Twitter. But Ms Ardern stressed that she was not resigning because she and the party were unpo[CENSORED]r. "I am not leaving because I believe we can't win the election but because I believe we can and will, and we need a fresh set of shoulders for that challenge." Contenders for the job are yet to emerge, but several MPs - including deputy leader Grant Robertson - have ruled themselves out of the contest. Ms Ardern listed her government's achievements on climate change, social housing and reducing child poverty as ones she was particularly proud of. But she said she hoped her legacy in New Zealand would be "as someone who always tried to be kind". "I hope I leave New Zealanders with a belief that you can be kind, but strong, empathetic but decisive, optimistic but focused. And that you can be your own kind of leader - one who knows when it's time to go," she said. link:https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-64327224

As the UK and other European nations prepare to send tanks to Ukraine to help it liberate more territory from Russia, our correspondent Andrew Harding has been to visit members of a front-line Ukrainian tank unit already engaging Russian forces near the fiercely contested towns of Bakhmut and Soledar. The explosions come every few seconds, sometimes in rapid clusters of six or more short blasts, sometimes deep and long and rib-cage-rattling, thundering across the snow-speckled hills that stretch along the front lines close to Bakhmut and Soledar. Then come the distant booms, the shorter punch of a mortar round blasting off on the roadside, and, occasionally, the bone-chilling, fizzing whoosh of an incoming artillery shell that sends us diving for cover on the frozen fields. This is the daily, constant, percussive chorus of war in the Donbas, where Ukrainian and Russian artillery, rocket and tank crews are slugging it out, trading blows in a fierce, but largely inconclusive struggle to break a months-long deadlock. "We have a target," said Roman, a Ukrainian tank unit commander, suddenly pulling off his gloves, clambering up onto the slippery, snow-covered turret of a dark green T-72 tank, and swinging open a heavy steel hatch. Another crew member, Vlad, scrambled out of a nearby fox hole, where he had been warming his grimy hands over a fresh fire, to help out. Seconds later, a skull-shaking explosion echoed across the valley and towards Bakhmut, as a US-supplied tank shell tore out of the gun barrel with a flash of orange, heading towards Russian positions on the opposite hillside. "T-72s are old tanks - this one's the same age as me," said Bogdan, a 55-year-old Ukrainian volunteer, turning to pat the huge, squat, Soviet-era machine behind him. "I used to drive one of these nearly 40 years ago - I can't believe I'm doing it again. But it works. It does the job." "But a Leopard would be better," said Volodymr, another member of their three-man crew, with a low chuckle. link:https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-64294653

Update 10/28/2022: We have updated this story with the latest data and information to best represent the costs associated with owning the example vehicles. Some EV aficionados might tell you that electric vehicles are cheaper to fuel and maintain, therefore they must be cheaper to own and operate. EV skeptics will counter with the premium pricing of many EVs, something that's quantifiable when a brand sells both a gas-powered and full EV version of the same vehicle. So, are EVs really less expensive over the long haul of ownership? Sort of. Sometimes. As they say, it’s complicated. To investigate whether an electric vehicle truly is cheaper than its gas counterpart to own and use as daily transportation we chose two models in the U.S. market that are available with both powertrains: The Hyundai Kona and Kona Electric, and the Ford F-150 and F-150 Lightning. We compared as much about their running costs as we could dig out from credible sources. Three-Year Cost Analysis We decided on an examination of the first three years of overall ownership cost. And we stuck with the numbers we could pin down. For the purposes of the clearest comparison possible, we are not including either financing costs or insurance premiums. How you choose to finance your vehicle—the term of the loan and the interest rate, or whether you decide to lease—can have a significant impact on your total costs. And insurance costs are widely variable as well, depending on your state, your driving record, and the coverage you choose. Initial Purchase Price Our journey starts with the purchase price. For the Hyundais, we used the most basic trim, and for the F-150s we used the XLT trim, which is a step above the most basic work truck trim in each model. We also equipped the Lightning with the Standard-Range battery. Any applicable Federal tax credits for the two EVs are figured in later in the calculations. The cars' purchase prices (including destination charges) are as follows: Hyundai Kona: $22,595 Hyundai Kona Electric: $35,295 Ford F-150: $40,960 Ford F-150 Lightning: $54,769 Miles Driven For annual miles driven, we went with 15,000—the de facto average mileage stat for U.S. drivers for decades. Both the electric vehicles included have EPA-estimated ranges near the industry median—258 miles for the Kona Electric and 230 for the F-150 Lightning—which should get owners to that number just fine. The result was a three-year mileage count of 45,000 miles. link: https://www.caranddriver.com/shopping-advice/a32494027/ev-vs-gas-cheaper-to-own/

In London’s Kensington High Street branch of TK Maxx there are only two men browsing on the menswear floor. It’s just days after Prince Harry revealed in his memoir Spare that he used to shop for “everyday casual clothes” at the designer discount chain. Similar to Harry’s “system” which he explains in his book, both are “working up one rack and down another,” before standing in front of a mirror holding sweaters and jeans up against their bodies rather than using the changing rooms. Maybe the royal is on to something? Before moving to California and sporting a more polished look featuring luxury brands such as suits from Celine and Brioni, Harry took a more everyman approach to fashion. “Nice and comfortable,” is how he sums it up in his book. The designer discount giant offers shopping at its most fundamental level. It describes its stores as “no frills”. Clothing is simply divided into categories such as tops. The retailer manages to keep its prices low, up to 60% less than the recommended retail price, by buying current and past season stock from manufacturers that have produced too much and department stores that have overbought. Items and brands vary from store to store. But in the menswear department at the Kensington High Street shop, Harry’s local branch, there are rails and rails of Ben Sherman checked shirts (£27.99), Tommy Hilfiger jeans (£49.99) and polo shirts from Gant (£39.99). Harry’s poorly fitting shirts and baggy jeans circa 2013 suddenly all make sense. There’s even a whole rack of his favourite woven belts. A staff member confirms there are no stock rooms and they never know what items are coming in. Instead, they receive a weekly delivery on a Sunday (some stores get daily) of stock which they place directly from the lorry on to the shop floor. All shelving is on wheels so managers can alter the layout of the store to suit the ever changing roster. Harry says he shopped 15 minutes before closing time. Staff say the only time the store is really busy is during the Christmas period, describing it as “madness”. It’s more likely Harry took a Supermarket Sweep approach, limiting the amount of time spent trawling through an endless mass of clothing with pieces crammed together. Harry also claims that he was “particularly fond of their once-a-year sale”, a quote that has gone viral with many questioning if he actually understands how the discount store works. A spokesperson for TK Maxx says: “Whilst we’re delighted Prince Harry is a big fan, we thought we should explain we don’t actually do sales. Instead, we offer great value, style, and savings all year round.” In his defence near the men’s changing rooms at Kensington High Street, there is a clearance section with yellow priced stickers offering even greater discounts. Think a Ben Sherman cord shirt for £18 and cargo Folk trousers for £24.99. Very on brand for the prince’s late noughties era. The store’s staff confirm they have never actually seen Harry or any other royals. However, “the Love Island crew” are regulars and they are excited to tell me they spotted the musician Stormzy a couple of weeks ago. Stemming from the US where it’s known as TJ rather than TK, the first British TK Maxx opened in Bristol in 1994. Ushering in a new way of shopping for designer pieces, there are now 352 standalone stores with almost half located in retail parks. The sixth largest fashion group in the UK, in September it reported a turnover of £2.1bn, compared to £1.3bn in 2021. The chain has garnered somewhat of a cult following over the years especially among the fashion crowd and no doubt Harry’s comments will fuel further interest. The stylist Joseph Parker runs the Instagram account tkfashun where he highlights the best weekly finds in the Oxford Street branch. Meanwhile, insiders say that the Ealing shop in west London is best for Vivienne Westwood while there’s always plenty of Marc Jacobs at the Fort Shopping Park branch in Manchester. link: https://www.theguardian.com/fashion/2023/jan/14/prince-harrys-baggy-shirts-and-jeans-circa-2013-all-make-sense-hes-a-tk-maxx-fan

The enormous, extinct shark megalodon dominated the seas millions of years ago, but even this fearsome ocean carnivore wasn't immune to tooth trouble. Recent analysis of a megalodon (Otodus megalodon) tooth with a rare abnormality — a groove all the way down the middle — hints that the dental deformity may trace its roots to an injury to the giant shark's jaw, perhaps caused by prey that fought back. In an illustration showing one possible encounter, a fish pierces the pursuing predator's jaw with its sharp bill, which may have set the stage for the megalodon growing a split tooth. Another possibility is that the big shark was impaled by a spine from a stingray, scientists wrote in a new study. In humans and other mammals, genetic factors, disease or injury can sometimes affect tooth buds and cause a dental abnormality known as "double tooth pathology," in which a single tooth grows with a split running lengthwise down the center, the study authors wrote. Such teeth can represent two tooth buds that combined to form one tooth, a process known as fusion, or a single tooth bud that divided, known as gemination. However, little is known about this pathology in sharks. For the study, researchers analyzed a 4-inch (10-centimeters) long split megalodon tooth alongside split fossil teeth from other sharks, to determine what may have caused the deformities. The scientists concluded that a traumatic injury was the most likely cause of the prehistoric split teeth, and the encounter that damaged the megalodon tooth may have affected how the shark hunted and fed. link: https://www.livescience.com/megalodon-toothache

Russian and Belarusian flags have been banned from the Australian Open tennis tournament after a courtside incident. Spectators were initially permitted to bring the flags into Melbourne Park on the condition they did not cause "disruption". But the organisers reversed that decision on Tuesday, after fans displayed a Russian flag during a match between Ukraine's Kateryna Baindl and Russian Kamilla Rakhimova. The ban is effective immediately. "We will continue to work with the players and our fans to ensure the best possible environment to enjoy the tennis," Tennis Australia said in a statement. Ukrainian fans say they called police and security to the first-round match on Monday, claiming Russian supporters were "taunting" Baindl. "This is profoundly unsafe, the war is ongoing," one fan told local newspaper The Age. "It's a small court, the guys were extremely close to the players, so there was an element of what I felt was intimidation." But one of the Russian men involved told The Age his group had simply been cheering their countrywoman on. He said: "People can view that as being obnoxious but we were just being your normal supporters. There was no ridiculing or disrespect." Ukraine's ambassador to Australia and New Zealand had earlier called on Tennis Australia to take action. Russian and Belarusian athletes have not been able to play under their countries' flags in several sports, including tennis, since the invasion of Ukraine began in February last year. While players from the two countries are competing under a neutral white flag during the Australian Open, they were banned from playing at Wimbledon altogether in 2022. Organisers were subsequently fined and the tournament was stripped of its ranking points by the Association of Tennis Professionals and Women's Tennis Association. The WTA said equal opportunities for players to compete as individuals had to be protected. Wimbledon bans Russian and Belarusian players The Victorian state government on Tuesday said Tennis Australia had made the right decision. "Russia's invasion of Ukraine is abhorrent," acting premier Jancinta Allan said. "It breaches international human rights obligations. It's been enabled and supported by Belarus. "[This] sends a very, very clear message that human rights are important, whether it's in sport, or more broadly in our community." The ban comes after Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk said she would not shake hands with opponents from Russia and Belarus who she believes have not done enough to condemn the invasion. link:https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-64286470

A double-decker bus carrying 70 Hinkley Point C workers overturned in icy road conditions in Somerset. Police attended the crash, which was declared a major incident, and also involved a motorcyclist, on the A39 near Cannington at about 06:00 GMT. There were 70 people on the bus and 54 patients were treated at the scene, but there were no fatalities, a spokeswoman for Avon and Somerset Police said. The force downgraded the crash from a major incident shortly after noon. Insp Rebecca Wells-Cole said 26 of the 54 patients were "walking wounded" and being treated at Bridgwater minor injury unit and Southmead Hospital in Bristol. "The incident was initially declared as a major incident due to the number of people involved and the resources required," she said. A spokesperson for the NHS in Somerset confirmed a "small number" of passengers on the bus required surgery. They said in a statement: "As of 3pm today, 27 patients were treated at the minor injuries unit in Bridgwater and a further 26 were treated at the emergency department at Musgrove Park Hospital for injuries consistent with a serious traffic collision. "A small number require surgery and some have been admitted to inpatient wards." The spokesperson added: "A further three patients were taken to Southmead Hospital, Bristol, where they received treatment, but none have needed to be admitted to hospital. "We would like to thank all our colleagues, including those who came in on their day off, as well as the emergency services who have been involved and supporting, and we wish all patients involved a speedy recovery." Chevrolet increased pricing on the Bolt EV and EUV by $900 and $600 respectively. The midyear price increases come mere months after Chevy dropped Bolt EV and EUV prices by $5900 and $6300 in June, making them the cheapest EVs in the United States for 2023. It's a shame Bolt prices are trending upward once more, but both vehicles remain enticing with the massive price cut in June, and with both vehicles qualifying for the full $7500 tax credit for EVs until at least March. Decision making can be tough, but it is still odd that after deciding in June it would dramatically reduce pricing for the Bolt EV and EUV—cutting them by roughly $6000 each—Chevrolet would decide barely six months later on a midyear price increase. Granted, the increases are small: the Bolt EV is going up by $900, to $27,495, and the EUV's price is increasing by $600, to $28,795. According to a statement by a Chevy representative, "Due to ongoing industry-related pricing pressures, the Chevy Bolt EV and EUV will see modest price increases starting in 2023, but we expect it to remain America's most affordable EV. Chevrolet remains committed in its long-standing role to provide true value. We expect to continue building the record sales momentum we saw in 2022." link:https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a42388138/2023-chevrolet-bolt-ev-euv-prices-increased/

When is a bird not a bird? When it's a bat, according to a New Zealand contest that just named a highly endangered bat "Bird of the Year." Pekapeka-tou-roa, or New Zealand's long-tailed bat (Chalinolobus tuberculatus), weighs about 0.4 ounces (11 grams) and a fully grown adult is about the length of a human thumb. This species of pekapeka — the Māori word for bat — was once common in New Zealand but is now exceptionally rare, representatives with Forest and Bird, a New Zealand conservation group and organizers of the contest, said in a statement. For two weeks, nearly 57,000 voters weighed in on selections for New Zealand's top bird; this year, for the first time in the contest's 16-year history, their choices included a mammal. Contest organizers added the long-tailed bat to the lineup to raise awareness about the species' endangered status, and it quickly flew to the top of the list with 7,031 votes, Reuters reported. Trailing behind in second place with 4,072 votes was the kākāpō (Strigops habroptilus), a tubby, flightless bird that's also known as an owl parrot. link:https://www.livescience.com/bat-named-bird-of-the-year

One of the toughest aspects of building a new year fitness habit is finding the time. Even in our hybrid-working world, it can feel like carving out just 30 minutes a couple of times a week is an impossible ask. But everyone has five minutes: it’s about a third as long as people spend looking for something to watch on Netflix. And although five minutes might not seem like much, if you keep your efforts focused, you will start to see results – as well as building the foundations of a longer-term habit. So pick an area to work on and get the egg timer going. Posture Desk jobs tend to build bad posture, and not everything you do in the gym will help – the typical “bench bro” routine can lead to a forward hunch that will set you up for problems down the line. “Posture is really about back strength,” says Helen O’Leary, a physiotherapist and clinical pilates instructor. “The more the muscles in the back of your body work, the more they will hold you up against gravity.” Use these three movements in a circuit, doing each once. Prone press “A great mobility and prep exercise to start with at the end of your day,” says O’Leary. “Lie on your stomach with your hands by your chest and your nose hovering above the floor. “Press your pubic bone into the floor to create a stable base. Press down into your hands and imagine you are pressing the floor away – this will start to send your upper back off the floor. Pause with your lowest ribs on the floor, take a breath and then lower back down. As you improve, try lifting your hands at the top of the movement to see if you can hold yourself up.” Pilates swimming “Very much a progression of the prone press – this will test your endurance as well as your core control,” says O’Leary. “Start as before, this time reaching your arms and legs away from each other as if you’re being pulled apart in a tug of war. You should end up with both feet and hands off the floor. Pause when you are here, and make sure you are breathing – then start to ‘paddle’ the arms and legs from the shoulder and hip socket. Your body will rotate a little and this is totally fine. Ideally, build the length of time you are up towards 60 seconds.” Single leg kick “It’s great for posture, but this movement also includes strength work around your shoulders, and will mobilise your spine,” says O’Leary. “Plus, your legs get involved, making it an all-in exercise. Lie on your front and press yourself up on to your elbows to make a triangle shape with your forearms, with your hands still slightly apart. Press down into your pubic bone and extend and raise one leg away from you so that it starts to hover off the floor from your lower thigh onwards. Now try to keep that leg off the floor as you start to draw a long arc upwards and outwards with your toes, bending the knee as you do. Again, keep the thigh off the floor and extend the leg out behind you before lowering it to the floor. Repeat five times on each leg, if you can.” This is important for everyday life, but tackling it the old-school way – with hundreds of momentum-heavy sit-ups – isn’t efficient. Instead, remember that the real purpose of your core muscles is to keep you braced, whether you are carrying the shopping or doing a parallel turn on the ski slopes – so you need to focus on slow, controlled movements that will help them do their job. Do each of the three exercises below for 40 seconds, rest for 10-20 seconds, and repeat.Crunch “Although it’s an old exercise, when performed with correct form, the standard crunch is great, as it activates nearly all the muscles of the core,” says the personal trainer Jacqui Ward. “Lie on your back, keeping your knees bent and feet flat on the floor, making sure your lower back is also pressed into the floor. Engage your abdominal muscles to lift your head and shoulders off the floor. I like to increase the time under tension, while at the top part of the crunch, by pausing for a second, and then slowly lowering back to the floor with control, keeping those abs contracted. If you really must put your hands behind your head, don’t pull on your head or neck.” Bicycle crunch “Again, technique is everything on this movement,” says Ward. “Get into a regular crunch position, then lift both legs off the ground. Lift your right shoulder toward your left knee and simultaneously extend your right leg, then repeat on the opposite side without pausing. Make sure to move slowly and emphasise muscle contraction to get the most out of the exercise.” This emphasises your obliques more than the standard crunch, so it’s worth doing both. Side plank raise “A side plank is a great movement, as it will show up any imbalances between your two sides,” says Ward. “To start, lie on your side with one forearm on the ground, your hand slightly in front of your shoulder. Put your top leg either in front or on top of the ‘grounded’ leg. As you exhale, push into your hand and feet, and lift your hips up until you are in a diagonal line. Drop your hips down, then press into your hand and feet and lift your hips back up so that they are almost in line with your shoulder. Repeat this movement, slow and controlled rather than bouncing, for 20 seconds on each side – if it’s tough on your wrist, press your fingers into the floor and create a little dome in your palm.” link: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/jan/16/five-minute-fix-how-to-improve-fitness-strength-posture-super-quick-speed

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Monday rejected the local bodies election results in Karachi and Hyderabad, while Jamat-e-Islami condemned the delay in the release of results but expressed willingness to form an alliance if needed. The results continue to come out slowly for the local government elections in Karachi and couldn't be finalised despite over 20 hours since the polling ended on Sunday. JI's Karachi chief Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman — who is a contender for the city's mayor office — denounced the delay in the results in a press conference today. He said that they faced difficulty in acquiring results as the process of receiving Forms 11 and 12 started late on Sunday night. "We are not getting the results from the returning officers (RO) despite over 18 hours of delay since the conclusion of polling," Rehman said. He strongly condemned the delay and called on the authorities concerned to stop the ROs who are "trying to change the results". Rehman also alleged that over 30 voters' lists were flawed but still a reasonable number of people came out to vote. He said that a lot of people from the PPP also voted for JI. He further said that his party has won over 100 seats, adding that there is ambiguity on the rest of the seats. "We contested these elections after hard work and wherever there is a discrepancy, we will expose it," he said. Rehman added that results in some UCs have been forcibly altered. JI open to forming alliance Earlier, speaking during the Geo News programme "Geo Pakistan", Naeem showed an inclination to form an alliance with other political parties if Jamat-e-Islami failed to form the government independently. Rehman said that his party wants to manage the municipality independently, however, it is open to holding talks with other parties for an alliance. When asked if he would join the PTI or Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Naeem said that he will hold talks with all the parties for the betterment of Karachi. "We will try to talk to other parties as we have a mandate, so everyone should respect our mandate," he said. Naeem also said that the JI emerged as the number one party through hard work, adding that they have received votes from all those belonging to other political parties. Speaking about the local body election results, the JI president said: "As per our calculation, we have won in over 90 union committees (UCs) and the number is likely to increase to over 100." Naeem also regretted the efforts made to reduce his party's seats, saying that it should not have been done. Talking about the future plans for the city, the JI chief said that the first thing his party wants to do is clean Karachi. He said that he will have to talk about the K-IV water project, revise the mass transit system, and solve the problems surrounding the sewerage system. "We will require the help of federal and provincial governments," he added. PTI rejects results Meanwhile, senior PTI leader Firdous Shamim Naqvi questioned the slow release of results despite a lower turnout, saying that his party rejects the election results. Naqvi said that over 16 hours have passed since polling time but only 40 out of 246 results have been announced, adding that people's lack of interest in the system and democracy is the reason behind the low turnout. On a question about siding with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM-P) on delimitations and voter list issues, the PTI leader said that the last local government's tenure ended in September 2020, and they could not wait any longer for issues to be resolved. He added that the PTI had reservations but wanted the LG polls to proceed. He added that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is opposed to them. PTI is at the peak of its po[CENSORED]rity, and the LG polls' results do not reflect that, Firdous added. When asked about a possible coalition with the PPP or JI, the PTI leader said that they would not form a coalition with anyone. He termed the PPP an anti-Karachi and anti-Sindh party, adding that he would personally advise his party to back JI if it emerges as the leading party. link: https://www.thenews.com.pk/latest/1031177-ji-shows-willingness-to-form-alliance-pti-rejects-lg-polls-results

POKHARA: Nepali rescue workers scoured a debris-strewn ravine Monday for more bodies from the mangled wreckage of a plane with 72 people on board, with hopes of any survivors now "nil", according to officials. The Yeti Airlines ATR 72 plummeted into the steep gorge, smashed into pieces and burst into flames as it approached the central city of Pokhara on Sunday morning, in Nepal's worst aviation disaster since 1992. The cause was not yet known but a video on social media — verified by AFP partner ESN — showed the twin-propeller aircraft banking suddenly and sharply to the left as it approached Pokhara airport. A loud explosion followed. Nepal, which has a poor record on air safety, observed a day of mourning on Monday for the victims. Soldiers used ropes and stretchers to retrieve bodies from the 300-metre (1,000-foot) deep ravine late into the night, with recovery efforts resuming on Monday. "We have collected 68 bodies so far. We are searching for four more bodies. We should continue until we get the bodies," senior local official Tek Bahadur KC told AFP. "We pray for a miracle. But, the hope of finding anyone alive is nil," he said. Debris from the airliner was strewn across the crash site, including the mangled remains of passenger seats and the plane's white-coloured fuselage. Rescue workers had rushed to the site after the crash, and tried to put out the raging fires that had sent thick black smoke into the sky. There were 15 foreigners on board, including five Indians, four Russians, two South Koreans, and one passenger each from Argentina, Australia, France and Ireland, Yeti spokesman Sudarshan Bartaula told AFP. The rest were Nepalis. "Incredibly sad news out of Nepal of a plane crashing with many passengers on board," Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Monday, adding that his government was seeking information about the Australian national on board. 'Like a bomb' The ATR 72 was on a flight from the capital Kathmandu and plunged into the gorge between Pokhara's brand-new international airport and the old domestic one shortly before 11:00am (0515 GMT) on Sunday. "I was walking when I heard a loud blast, like a bomb went off," said witness Arun Tamu, 44, who was around 500 metres away and who live-streamed video of the blazing wreckage on social media. "A few of us rushed to see if we can rescue anybody. I saw at least two women were breathing. The fire was getting very intense and it made it difficult for us to approach closer," the former soldier told AFP. It was unclear if anyone on the ground was injured. "Our first thoughts are with all the individuals affected by this," the plane's France-based manufacturer ATR said in a statement on Sunday. "ATR specialists are fully engaged to support both the investigation and the customer." Nepal's air industry has boomed in recent years, carrying goods and people between hard-to-reach areas, as well as ferrying foreign mountain climbers. The sector has been plagued by poor safety due to insufficient training and maintenance. The European Union has banned all Nepali carriers from its airspace over safety concerns. Nepal also has some of the world's most remote and trickiest runways, flanked by snow-capped peaks with approaches that pose a challenge for even accomplished pilots. The weather is also notoriously capricious and hard to forecast, particularly in the mountains, where thick fog can suddenly obscure whole mountains from view. Nepal's deadliest aviation accident took place in 1992, when all 167 people on a Pakistan International Airlines jet died when it crashed on approach to Kathmandu. link: https://www.thenews.com.pk/latest/1031194-hopes-of-survivors-in-nepal-plane-crash-nil
