  1. ust weeks after hosting the Olympics, Paris has inaugurated the 2024 Paralympics with a nearly four-hour-long opening ceremony in the heart of the city. Against the backdrop of a setting sun, thousands of athletes paraded down the famed Champs-Elysees avenue to Place de la Concorde in central Paris where French President Emmanuel Macron officially declared the Paralympic Games open on Wednesday night. Security was tight, with some 15,000 law enforcement officers on site, but there was a light summer feeling to the evening as the sun slowly set on the French capital. “Dear athletes, welcome to the country of love and revolution. Rest assured, tonight, no Storming of the Bastille, no guillotine, because tonight the most beautiful revolution starts – the Paralympic revolution,” Paris 2024 president Tony Estanguet said in his speech. “It’s a sweet revolution that will change all of us deeply.” The live show started at the foot of the obelisk in Place de la Concorde with Canadian musician, songwriter, and producer Chilly Gonzales on the piano. Artists with disabilities and impairments screamed a countdown and French singer Christine and the Queens delivered a pop rendition of Edith Piaf’s Non, Je ne regrette rien. About 50,000 people watched the ceremony in stands built around the iconic square, which is the biggest in Paris and is visible from afar because of its ancient Egyptian obelisk. Accessibility for athletes in wheelchairs was facilitated with strips of asphalt laid along the avenue and placed over the square. https://www.aljazeera.com/sports/2024/8/29/colourful-joyous-opening-ceremony-kickstarts-paralympic-games-paris-2024
  2. Diabetes can age the brain by up to four years, a new study based on MRI scans shows. There was one silver lining: Healthy lifestyle changes could help prevent that neurological aging, the Swedish researchers said. "Having an older-appearing brain for one's chronological age can indicate deviation from the normal aging process and may constitute an early warning sign for dementia," warned study lead author Abigail Dove. "On the positive side, it seems that people with diabetes may be able to influence their brain health through healthy living," added Dove, a graduate student of neurobiology at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. Related Lilly cuts price on weight-loss drug Zepbound, selling it in single-dose vials FDA approves first automated insulin delivery system for people with Type 2 diabetes Americans with Type 2 diabetes increased nearly 20% in 10-year period Her team published its findings Wednesday in the journal Diabetes Care. As Dove's group noted, Type 2 diabetes has long been acknowledged to be a risk factor for dementia. However, the impact of prediabetes and diabetes on the brain health of people without dementia wasn't known. The new study sought to remedy that, analyzing MRI brain scans of over 31,000 people ages 40 to 70 who were all enrolled in a British database called the U.K. Biobank. Dove and her colleagues used AI technology to gauge the relative "brain age" for each individual. They found that folks whose medical records showed them to be in a prediabetic state had an average brain age that was half a year older than people without the condition. For people with full-blown diabetes, brain age was an average of 2.3 years older, and for folks with very poorly controlled diabetes their brains were an average of four years older than folks without the blood sugar disease. However, the study also found that people who were physically active and didn't smoke or drink were much less likely to have an overly aged brain. "There's a high and growing prevalence of Type 2 diabetes in the po[CENSORED]tion," Dove said in a Karolinska news release. "We hope that our research will help prevent cognitive impairment and dementia in people with diabetes and prediabetes." https://www.upi.com/Health_News/2024/08/28/diabetes-age-brain-healthy-lifestyle-reverse/5171724850465/
  3. The UN food agency has said it is pausing the movement of its staff in the Gaza Strip "until further notice" after its team came under fire near an Israeli checkpoint. In a statement, the World Food Programme (WFP) said the incident happened at the Wadi Gaza bridge on Tuesday evening as two of its armoured vehicles were escorting a convoy of lorries with humanitarian aid. The WFP said that while nobody was injured, one vehicle was directly hit, despite the convoy being clearly marked and "receiving multiple clearances by Israel". The BBC has approached the Israel Defense Forces for comment on the issue. In Wednesday's statement, the WFP said: "The team was returning from a mission to Kerem Shalom/Karam Abu Salem with two WFP armoured vehicles after escorting a convoy of trucks carrying humanitarian cargo routed to Gaza’s central area. It said one of the WFP vehicles was then "directly struck by gunfire as it was moving towards" an IDF checkpoint. "It sustained at least 10 bullets: five on the driver’s side, two on the passenger side and three on other parts of the vehicle. None of the employees on board were physically harmed." The WFP added that although this was not the first security incident during the war, it was the first time its vehicle had been directly shot at near a checkpoint, despite securing the necessary clearances. "The incident is a stark reminder of the rapidly and ever shrinking humanitarian space in the Gaza Strip, where increasing violence compromises our ability to deliver life-saving assistance," the agency said. Executive director Cindy McCain described the incident as "totally unacceptable". "I call on the Israeli authorities and all parties to the conflict to act immediately to ensure the safety and security of all aid workers in Gaza," she added. Earlier, the UN said its humanitarian aid operation in the Gaza Strip was continuing, after a senior official said it had ground to a halt on Monday due to Israeli military evacuation orders. Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told reporters on Tuesday evening that conditions “made it extremely, extremely difficult for us to do our work”, but that “we are doing what we can with what we have”. On Sunday, UN staff had to relocate quickly after the Israeli military issued an evacuation order covering a part of the Israeli-designated humanitarian zone around the central town of Deir al-Balah, where the UN had its main operations centre. The military said it had acted to protect civilians while operating against Hamas “terror operatives” in the area. It also said that it was working with the UN and other international organisations to find alternative locations for them to continue their activities. Up to 88.5% of Gaza has been placed under evacuation orders since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas, according to the UN, which is the primary provider and distributor of humanitarian aid in the territory. That has forced an estimated 1.8 million people to shelter inside the humanitarian zone, which currently spans only about 41 sq km (15.8 sq miles) and lacks critical infrastructure and basic services. The Israeli military launched a campaign in Gaza to destroy Hamas in response to an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on 7 October, during which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage. More than 40,500 people have been killed in Gaza since then, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. On Tuesday evening, Under-Secretary-General for Safety and Security Gilles Michaud said the IDF had given more than 200 UN personnel a few hours’ notice on Sunday to move out of their offices and living places in a southern area of Deir al-Balah. The UN’s humanitarian office said the order affected 15 UN and NGO premises, as well as four UN warehouses, a water desalination plant and al-Aqsa hospital, the town’s main medical facility. “The timing could hardly be worse, with the start of a massive polio vaccination campaign scheduled for next week, for which large numbers of staff will need to enter the strip,” Mr Michaud said. The UN is planning to vaccinate 640,000 children after a 10-month-old baby who contracted the water-borne disease was left partially paralysed - the first registered case in Gaza in 25 years. It has appealed to the warring parties to implement two seven-day humanitarian pauses in order to allow the vaccinations to be carried out successfully. The IDF said in a statement on Wednesday that it had been forced to issue evacuation orders in and around Deir al-Balah to carry out “essential operations” against Hamas “terror operatives” and their infrastructure. It also stressed that it was operating “in full co-ordination with the international community to preserve the activity of the international community’s vital centres, including shelters, aid depots and residences”. “However, in light of the cynical exploitation carried out by Hamas and other terrorist organisations, there is sometimes a need to evacuate these centres.” The IDF said it would take action to help find alternative locations for UN agencies and NGOs to continue their activities and to provide alternative aid routes. Also in Deir al-Balah on Wednesday, local medics said at least eight Palestinians had been killed in an air strike near a school housing displaced people in the town. Another 11 people were reportedly killed in strikes in the southern city of Khan Younis, where Israeli tanks were said to have advanced into the city centre. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/clywnxj4dd8o
  4. ' I knew next to nothing about Deadlock when I got playtest access a couple weeks back. I hadn't looked at any illicit YouTube gameplay footage. I hadn't perused the then-unsanctioned subreddit. Operating with only the vague awareness that Valve was making a third person MOBA shooter, I fired up the closed alpha without knowing what I'd be looking at. Scifi, maybe? Valve does a lot of scifi stuff, right? Instead, as the main menu loaded, I was met with a spooky strings-and-piano track straight out of a Tim Burton joint as the camera sank between city buildings to settle on a smoky city street littered with candles and spectral pigeons. A burly, bespectacled half-demon detective leaned against the entryway to a sort of occult corner store, its exterior adorned with hanging bells, crow feathers, and a banner advertising its sale of "BEER, TALISMANS, GROCERIES." At the end of the block, a distant troop of candle-headed puppets marched in lockstep across the intersection. "Welcome to the Cursed Apple," Deadlock's tutorial exclaimed. I could not have been more thrilled. If there's a term for the aesthetic of Deadlock's accursed alt-New York, I don't know it. Occultpunk, maybe? Neo Wiccanoir? Its current hero roster includes a fedora-wearing, interplanar pyromaniac, a living gargoyle, a femme fatale with a haunted arm, and a Columbia professor who got turned into a star in a bottle by a spacetime hole. In-game, you battle alongside battalions of candle golems across city streets lit by art nouveau streetlamps so you can battle the opposing team's towering eldritch idols. There are ritual circles on the rooftops. There are phantoms peering out from open elevators. The Cursed Apple is a city where everyone is dabbling in forces that nobody should be. It's a little bit steampunk, a little bit pulp horror, and a lot Fallen London; the wardrobes might be from the 1930s, but the black magic bodega still has an ATM sticker on the front door. Whatever you call it, Deadlock's vibe is refreshingly weird. There's a lot of Dota 2 DNA in the character design language of Deadlock's heroes, but it's a cast that feels more cohesive, even in its early development state. Where Dota 2's roster was built around a scattershot of remixed Warcraft 3 heroes, Deadlock's disparate character concepts—from the pompadoured monster hunter to the walking junkpile—feel like Valve reveling in a setting that it can sketch out from scratch, something the studio hasn't done since Team Fortress 2. It's an early glimpse at a metropolis-sized melting pot of cultures, creatures, arcana, and the occasional guy made of goo. And not only that: It's funny. Deadlock's map is far from finished, but it's already scattered with delightful bits of worldbuilding absurdity. Parked tankers and trucks carry branding for "Fogwell's Bioluminescence" or "Five Eyes Meats (from concentrate)," while ads for a firm of reanimation specialists are offering free estimates and same-day service on "fluid restoration" and "mortal preservation." It's an echo of the kind of Valve humor that I loved in TF2's class shorts and item descriptions, filtered through a world where you can buy occult goods at the same place you get your produce. https://www.pcgamer.com/games/moba/deadlocks-occult-new-york-setting-already-has-such-excellent-vibes-that-i-might-become-a-moba-guy-just-to-see-where-valve-takes-it/
  5. Amazon has launched its artificial intelligence (AI) shopping assistant Rufus in beta to users in India. The chatbot, integrated into the Amazon mobile app, can answer user queries, suggest product recommendations, and compare different products to help users make better-informed decisions. Rufus was first unveiled in February in beta and was available only to users in the US. The e-commerce giant also claimed that in the coming weeks, the feature will be expanded to more users in India. Amazon's Rufus AI Shopping Assistant Comes to India The tech giant announced the launch of Rufus in India on Tuesday, stating that the AI chatbot will be available in beta form to a subset of Amazon mobile app users in the country. Once users get access to the chatbot, they will see a new icon placed on the bottom right corner of the app. Clicking the icon will open Rufus' interface as a bottom sheet. A text field will be placed in the bottom sheet allowing users to type queries. In case users struggle to get started, they can also take the help of suggested questions. To end the conversation, users can swipe down the bottom sheet. When retrieved again, the chatbox will show the previous conversation. Amazon said users can converse with Rufus while shopping product categories, ask for gift suggestions based on activity and occasion, compare different products, seek recommendations, and ask questions about a specific product while on its product detail page. Rufus' database includes Amazon's repository, and it can also access the Internet to find relevant answers to user queries, the company stated. The e-commerce giant also highlighted that the chatbot can get things wrong and hallucinate. If this happens, users can leave feedback by rating the answers with a thumbs up or thumbs down. There is an option to provide detailed feedback as well. The history behind the name of the chatbot is also interesting. The New York Times reported that Amazon has a policy that allows its employees to bring their dogs to the workplace. Rufus is said to be the name of one of the first dogs that roamed the offices during the early days of the company. https://www.gadgets360.com/ai/news/amazon-rufus-ai-shopping-assistant-beta-launch-india-announcement-6436157
  6. A key application for the Windows on Arm ecosystem, Blackmagic’s DaVinci Resolve video editor, has exited beta and is now available for download in both X86 and Windows on Arm versions. For months, Qualcomm has highlighted DaVinci Resolve as a major app that legitimized its Snapdragon X Elite processor and the related Windows on Arm ecosystem. DaVinci Resolve is an extremely po[CENSORED]r tool, in part because of its pricing tier — the full-featured app is free, but professionals can buy a paid Studio license for even more features. Publishing the app in a dedicated Windows on Arm version basically told the world that yes, Copilot+ PCs were powerful enough for professional work. Blackmagic makes both the Windows (X86) version of DaVinci Resolve and the Windows on Arm version available for download on its website. Both versions contain the same features. While Resolve can handle media files of any resolution, it does limit project mastering and output to Ultra HD or lower, and supports just one GPU on Windows. It supports two GPUs on the Mac Pro. Blackmagic provides a list of new features in DaVinci Resolve 19.0, which include live media syncing so that editors can begin editing even while the camera is recording, and AI-powered features to isolate voices, remix music, and use AI tracking and stabilization. So far, we haven’t included an Arm laptop in our list of the best laptops for video editing. Maybe that will change soon? https://www.pcworld.com/article/2440135/windows-on-arms-strongest-selling-point-finally-ships.html
  7. If you're patiently waiting for Windows 11's 24H2 update to see a performance bump for your Zen 3, Zen 4, or Zen 5 CPU, you no longer need to twiddle your thumbs. In a statement to Tom's Hardware, AMD said that the branch prediction optimizations allowing for those improvements have been backported to Windows 11 23H2. The update, KB5041587, can be found under Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates. "We expect the performance uplift to be very similar between 24H2 and 23H2 with KB5041587 installed," an AMD spokesperson said. Windows 11 24H2 is currently in Release Preview as part of Windows Insider. A handful of reviewers have found multiple games showing performance uplifts, though at least one has seen regressions in some titles as well. While the improved performance should go back to Zen 3, it's really AMD's new Ryzen 9000 series processors that need a bit of a shine. Some of the new chips, like the Ryzen 9 9950X, saw negative reviews when critics couldn't replicate AMD's performance uplift claims. AMD claimed that numerous factors led to this occurrence, from Intel's 13th and 14th Gen Core instability issues to using a Windows "admin" profile rather than a standard user account. "[The Ryzen 9 9950X] lags behind competing chips in gaming, and the generational gains are small enough in some productivity workloads that the previous-gen Ryzen 9 7950X is an attractive alternative," Tom's Hardware managing editor Paul Alcorn wrote in his review at launch. But if the branch prediction in Windows 11 24H2 — and now Windows 11 23H2 via this optional update — increases performance as dramatically as preview builds have shown, it could potentially breathe more life into AMD's latest processors when it comes to gaming and certain productivity workloads. We'll have to do some testing of our own to see the difference. AMD referred to this branch prediction as "AMD-specific," so we'll have to do some digging to see if there's an Intel version of this code or if Ryzen owners will have something to brag about with this update. https://www.tomshardware.com/software/windows/microsoft-backports-branch-prediction-improvements-to-windows-11-23h2-more-users-will-see-ryzen-performance-improvements
  8. The Arslantepe Mound, located 15 kilometers southwest of the Euphrates River, has been home to humanity for thousands of years thanks to its high agricultural potential, wetlands and structure protected from the river's floods. Findings from the Late Chalcolithic period to the Iron Age in the ancient site, bear the traces of many civilizations from the Hittites to the Romans and Byzantines. During excavation works last year, it was unearthed two 7,000-year-old animal-figured seals at the UNESCO World Heritage site located in the eastern province of Malatya. The seals found in the Late Chalcolithic period layer are believed to date back to 5000 B.C. and the oldest seals found in the mound to date. Francesca Balossi Restelli, the head of the excavation team, told the state-run Anadolu Agency that the animal figures on the seals found in the western part of the mound were used in earlier periods. Restelli explained that these seals are different from other seals found in the mound in previous years in terms of their date and the motifs on them. “Two seals were found under the wall of a house that belongs to the late Chalcolithic period, between 3900 and 3500 B.C. There is another house right next to it and it dates back to 4200 BC. There is a 500-year difference between these two houses. We found the seals right in the middle of these two houses. We compare the styles of the seals in other regions to determine the date from their motifs. When we look at the style, I think the date of these seals will be older, 5000 B.C.,” she said. Noting that animal figures were carved on the seals, Rastelli said they are the oldest seals found so far at Arslantepe. “We think that the bone seal has a goat or goat-like animal figure. The stone seal may be a dog or a dog-like animal. We find these animal figures mostly in the Chalcolithic period, not only Arslantepe but also the entire Northern Mesopotamia region and Eastern Anatolia Region use these figures on seals; a typical seal. But the seals we found before are not that old, so it is interesting. We understand that they started using these figures much earlier in Arslantepe. But there are definitely older ones because there are layers 10 meters below the hill. I'm sure we'll find older seals as we go down,” she said. The Arslantepe Mound’s embankment is 30 meters high, and the mound was inhabited between 5000 B.C. and 11th century A.D. At the mound site, more than 2,000 stamp seals, a statue of King Tarhunza and two late Hittite period lion statues have been found. The temple of the mound dates from 3600-3500 B.C. https://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/animal-figured-seals-found-in-arslantepe-mound-200010
  9. England batter Dawid Malan has retired from international cricket at the age of 36. Malan is one of only two men, along with Jos Buttler, to score a century in all three formats for England, played in 22 Tests, 30 one-day internationals and 62 T20s. In 2020 he became the world number one-ranked T20 batter and was the fastest player to reach 1,000 international runs in the format, taking just 24 innings. The left-hander was part of the England squad that won the 2022 T20 World Cup, but has not played an international since the 50-over World Cup in November. "It has been an incredible journey since July 2017," Malan said. "I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to play for England in all three formats. "Cricket, like most sports, is an industry where almost everyone eventually retires wishing they had done that little bit more. Whether you’ve played ten Tests or 100, many step away regretting not playing just one more, scoring a few more runs, or winning more trophies. "Right now, as I retire from international cricket, I can say I am genuinely satisfied." However, speaking to The Times, external, Malan said that despite "exceeding all expectations" in white-ball cricket, he felt he could have played more Test matches. "Test cricket was always the pinnacle for me growing up," he said. "At times I played well but in between just wasn’t good enough or consistent enough, which was disappointing because I felt I was a better player than that." Malan scored 1,074 runs, at an average of 27.53, in Tests and has 1,450 runs at 55.76 in one-day internationals. He is England's fourth-highest run-scorer in men's T20s with 1,892, at an average of 36.38. Malan was born in London but grew up in South Africa, returning to the UK with Middlesex in 2006 before joining Yorkshire in 2020. The batter, who has occasionally bowled off-spin, signed a white-ball only contract and took on a part-time coaching role with the county at the start of 2024. He is also a regular in franchise cricket leagues across the world, including the Indian Premier League, Australian Big Bash and The Hundred. https://www.bbc.com/sport/cricket/articles/c1d7k05krexo

  11. At the weekly General Audience, Pope Francis decries indifference in the face of migrants who die crossing deserts and seas in search of a better life, and calls for global system of governance based on justice and solidarity. By Devin Watkins Pope Francis set aside his catechesis series on the Holy Spirit at the Wednesday General Audience. He focused instead on drawing attention to the plight faced by migrants who brave daunting odds in search of a place where they can live in peace and security. “Sea and desert” were the two words the Pope highlighted, saying they recur often in the words of migrants and those who seek to help them. With these words, he sought to include all the physical barriers and dangers that migrants must cross along their journey. Pope Francis noted that he has spoken often about the Mediterranean Sea, both because he is the Bishop of Rome and because it serves as a symbol. “Mare nostrum,” he said, using a Latin phrase used by the ancient Romans to describe the Mediterranean, “a place of communication between peoples and civilizations, has become a cemetery.” The Pope pointed out that most of these deaths could have been prevented, decrying the people “who systematically work, using all means, to push back migrants.” “And when this is done consciously and responsibly, it is a grave sin,” he said. “Let us not forget what the Bible says: ‘You shall not wrong or oppress a foreigner’.” Pope Francis said the sea and the desert are full of symbolism in the Bible, since they “witness the drama of people fleeing from oppression and slavery.” “They are places of suffering, fear, and despair, but at the same time, they are places of passage toward liberation, redemption, and the fulfillment of God’s promises,” he said. God, added the Pope, Himself shares the drama endured by migrants. “He is there with them; He suffers with them; He weeps and hopes with them.” Pope Francis said everyone can agree that “migrants should not be in those deadly seas and deserts.” Yet, reaching this goal cannot be done through stricter laws or border militarization, he said. “We will achieve it by expanding safe and regular pathways for migrants, facilitating refuge for those fleeing wars, violence, persecution, and various disasters,” he said. “We will achieve it by promoting in every way a global governance of migration based on justice, fraternity, and solidarity.” The Holy Father concluded his reflections by praising the work of “so many good Samaritans who dedicate themselves to helping and saving injured and abandoned migrants along these routes of desperate hope, on all five continents.” He especially mentioned the work of Mediterranea Saving Humans, an Italian civil society organisation that seeks to rescue migrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea. “These courageous men and women are a sign of a humanity that does not allow itself to be infected by the harmful throwaway culture of indifference,” he said. Even if we cannot be on the frontlines, he concluded, each of us can contribute in their own way to this “fight for civilization” with our prayer.” Thank you for reading our article. 13. In 2023, Microsoft announced that the Mail, Calendar, and People apps on Windows were officially coming to an end and would be replaced by Outlook for Windows. Those apps are still available on the Microsoft Store, but only until December 31, 2024. From then on, we’ll only have Outlook for Windows — and up until now, that’s been a sore point for many users who have criticized the newer app’s lack of many features from the older apps. But it seems as if Microsoft has listened and taken the criticism to heart. According to Windows Latest, you can expect to see around 30 new features added to the Outlook app later this year. The new features will include support for PST files, better control over email retention lengths, and the ability to pin important folders to the top of the app. If you’re interested in AI assistance, Copilot will be able to help you rewrite portions of your email before sending it off. A complete list of all upcoming changes to Outlook for Windows can be found on the official Microsoft 365 site. https://www.pcworld.com/article/2438554/microsoft-finally-adding-long-awaited-features-to-outlook-for-windows.html
  14. Single-board computers (or SBCs) like the Raspberry Pi and Arduino just keep getting smaller. But sometimes that doesn't quite fit the bill. If you're looking for something with a little more flexibility, you might want to check out this awesome custom Arduino PCB put together by maker and developer Rajesh K T with Edison Science Corner known as the Flexduino. Rajesh is no stranger to making his own PCBs, especially ones inspired by the Arduino. After working on making a few variants over the years, he decided to create an Arduino replica that had a bit more bend than your average circuit board. Manufacturers like PCB Way have options to have custom boards made with flexible layers which is what this one is constructed with. Although a few shortcuts had to be taken to complete the design, the end result still actually works. We get a look at it in action thanks to the video Rajesh shared, detailing the creation process. In it, we see the finished Flexduino complete with surface-mounted components, GPIO and LEDs that illuminate. One important thing that's missing, however, is the ground plane, which wouldn't be conducive for a flexible PCB like this. The original Arduino is traditionally fabricated with a dark blue PCB but this flexible board has a yellowish amber color. It's very thin, measuring in at just 1mm thick which makes it even easier to flex. As a finishing touch, Rajesh made a little logo titled "Flexduino" and had it screen printed on the board. As of writing, the project has yet to be made open source, so we haven't had the chance to explore the source files for ourselves. However, you can get an in-depth look at the design process and see some detailed screenshots of the gerber file data in the YouTube video shared to his Edison Science Corner channel. 15. As part of Brock’s ongoing commitment to fostering a culture of accessibility, the University is introducing a new policy to help guide those who wish to be accompanied by a service animal on campus. Effective Friday, Aug. 30, the Animals on Campus Policy both clarifies and strengthens Brock’s procedures for service animals, outlining the process for students, employees and visitors. Service animals are permitted anywhere on Brock property that is open to the public. Permission for non-public areas may also be granted through the accommodations process. The policy, created in accordance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disability Act and the Ontario Human Rights Code, aims to ensure all Brock community members are provided a safe and healthy environment to both work and learn in. It applies to all staff, faculty, professional librarians, students, contractors and visitors who seek to bring an animal into any indoor space. “Development of this policy is one way in which Brock is working to make campus a more accessible and inclusive space for all,” says Jennifer Guarasci, Interim Vice-President, Administration. “As we usher in the new school year, it’s critical that we ensure the proper supports are in place to set students and employees up for success, both today and into the future.” Students can register with Student Accessibility Services, which will review service animal requests while developing an accommodation plan that suits each individual’s needs. Employee accommodation requests can be sent to employeehealth@brocku.ca, with more information available on the Medical Accommodations Sharepoint site (login required). 18. Help us defend against Russia and strike back, Zelenskiy pleads with allies; president says Pokrovsk defence efforts strengthened. What we know on day 916 At least two people died and a search continued in the rubble after a missile struck a civilian infrastructure building on Monday night in the city of Kryvyi Rih, central Ukraine, officials said. Serhiy Lisak, the governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region where Kryvyi Rih is located, said the building was “wiped out”. One person was killed during Russian attacks in south-eastern Zaporizhzhia, officials there said. Ukraine’s air defence systems were activated early on Tuesday to repel further Russian bombardments, officials said. Early on Tuesday morning, witnesses told Reuters there were at least three rounds of explosions in Kyiv, where the military administration said air defences had been activated. It comes after Russia fired hundreds of drones and missiles at Ukraine earlier on Monday, killing at least seven people and battering the already weakened energy grid. Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, responded to Monday’s attack with a familiar call to western allies to provide more by way of air defence support and lift restrictions on using western weapons to strike deep into Russian territory, write Shaun Walker and Pjotr Sauer. “We could do much more to protect lives if the aviation of our European neighbours worked together with our F-16s and together with our air defence,” he said. “Ukraine cannot be constrained in its long-range capabilities when the terrorists face no such limitations,” Zelenskiy said, adding: “America, Britain, France, and our other partners have the power to help us stop this terror. The time for decisive action is now.” Andriy Yermak, Zelensky’s chief of staff, said the attack showed that Kyiv needed permission to strike “deep into the territory of Russia with western weapons”. The commander of the Ukrainian air force, Mykola Oleshchuk, said Russia launched 127 missiles at Ukraine on Monday, of which 102 were intercepted. He added that Russian forces had also launched 109 drones. The prime minister, Denys Shmyhal, said 15 regions had sustained damage during the strikes, and Zelenskiy said the energy sector had suffered “a lot of damage”. Ukraine’s foreign ministry said a hydropower plant in the Kyiv region had been targeted. A video posted on social media and verified by Reuters showed a damaged dam and a fire after an apparent strike at a plant. A separate clip, also verified, showed a missile hitting a water reservoir. Targeting hydroelectric dams and reservoirs is a war crime under the Geneva conventions, even if a military objective is behind the attack. The Russian defence ministry confirmed it hit energy facilities in a statement, claiming that they were being used to aid Ukraine’s “military-production complex” and that “all designated targets were hit”. Joe Biden denounced the attack on Ukraine as “outrageous”. “I condemn, in the strongest possible terms, Russia’s continued war against Ukraine and its efforts to plunge the Ukrainian people into darkness,” said the US president. Nato member Poland said it was searching for a Russian drone after its airspace was violated. What was “probably an unmanned aerial vehicle” came around 30km (18 miles) into Polish territory during the barrage against Ukraine. “The object was confirmed by at least three radiolocation stations,” said Gen Maciej Klisz, operational commander of the armed forces. Army command spokesman Jacek Goryszewski said “it is highly likely that it could have been a Shahed-type drone” of Iranian design, used by the Russian army. “But this has to be verified,” he said, adding that it might have flown back out of Polish territory. Russia said on Monday it had struck Ukrainian forces at more than a dozen places along the front in the Kursk region of western Russia. Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Sunday that his forces had advanced up to three kilometres (1.86 miles) in Kursk, taking control of two more settlements. In Ukraine’s Donbas region, Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the military would “further strengthen” the direction of the eastern strategic hub of Pokrovsk which Russian forces are throwing everything into capturing. Zelenskiy said he was briefed by his army chief on the situation there. One person died and six others were injured in a fire at an oil refinery in the Siberian city of Omsk on Monday, said the regional governor, Vitaly Khotsenko. Authorities did not specify the source of the fire. Russian media reported that loud explosions were heard near the refinery, operated by Gazprom and about 2,300km from Ukraine. Ukraine regularly carries out drone attacks on oil and gas infrastructure in Russia, sometimes far from its border. Russia stayed away as Switzerland hosted UN security council members in Geneva on Monday to commemorate the Geneva conventions, signed 75 years ago after the second world war to limit the barbarity of war. Russia was the only security council member absent – its UN envoy in New York called the meeting a “waste of time”. Ivan Lyubysh-Kirdey, a journalist for Reuters, remained in a critical condition after a missile strike on a hotel in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk, the news agency said on Monday. Lyubysh-Kirdey was part of a team of six from Reuters covering the war staying at the Hotel Sapphire when it was hit on Saturday. Ryan Evans, a safety adviser for the agency, was killed. One other Reuters journalist, Daniel Peleschuk, was injured while the other three team members were accounted for, according to the agency. https://www.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/aug/27/ukraine-war-briefing-despair-as-russian-missiles-and-drones-rain-down-unanswered
  19. In a time where promising new multiplayer shooters regularly try and fail to escape the shadow of Call of Duty, Fortnite, and Apex Legends, the story of Splitgate and its creators at 1047 Games defies all logic. There were several moments when the "Halo with portals" arena shooter almost sank after failing to find a steady audience with its Steam launch in 2019. It was a minor miracle when Splitgate reemerged with console ports in 2021 and became the hottest free-to-play game of that summer, exploding to a peak of 200,000 concurrent players and briefly making a traditional arena shooter one of the most-played games in the world. But what's most surprising to me is what happened after the team of around 20 at 1047 Games, who'd spent months putting out fires caused by Splitgate's unexpected po[CENSORED]rity, couldn't keep up with the content demands of its players. The game's five minutes of fame had expired, player numbers were way down, but 1047 didn't plug away at updates in hopes of luring people back or call it quits. Instead, it got the opportunity to do what so few studios in the live service biz ever get to do: Put the old Splitgate on a shelf, and start making a sequel. Fresh start "We felt like we had a really good feel of what's missing from [Splitgate 1]. And I think we only had two things that we were actually happy with," Ian Proulx, 1047 Games CEO and creative director, told me in the downstairs office of his Lake Tahoe waterfront home in Nevada. "We thought we had great gunplay and we really like the portal mechanic. Everything else about the game, we just did sort of good enough." This time six years ago, Proulx and his co-founder Nicholas Bagamian were grinding away at Splitgate from Proulx's parents' house with a lean, remote crew of 15. In 2024, 1047 is still remote, but has steadily grown to over 160. That number took me by surprise—in the year and a half since 1047 went behind the curtain to start on Splitgate 2, the small studio with a student game that punched above its weight has quietly become a landing pad for veteran FPS talent from Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer, Ubisoft, 343 Industries, and more. The realization brought 1047's decision to leave its first game behind into focus: Splitgate was successful, but it was also cobbled together with code Proulx wrote when he was still a student, maps he designed himself that he now considers "really bad," and an "all over the place" art style that represented the best they could do at the time. Splitgate 2 would be a fresh start on an upgraded Unreal Engine 5, designed from the ground up with "triple-A everything, triple-A graphics, art, style, triple-A sound, triple-A animation, VFX, everything," as Proulx described to me with genuine excitement. Class acts The first few months of development were spent brainstorming exactly what kind of shooter Splitgate 2 would be. Proulx wanted the sequel to require more teamwork, have "world class" seasonal updates, more variety, and a lower the barrier to entry while "maintaining a high skill ceiling." https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/splitgate-2-isn-t-halo-with-portals-anymore-but-it-may-be-something-better/
  20. After releasing some additional features that were previously missing from older Galaxy Watch models, such as the Galaxy Watch 6 series, Samsung has finally enabled its Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification (IHRN) feature on its new and recent Galaxy Watch models. While the Galaxy Watch 4 series recently received the IHRN feature, Samsung's latest and greatest Watch Ultra has now finally received the same feature. The IHRN feature which uses the BioActive sensor on the case backs of recent models will now work on watches ranging from the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 right up till the latest Galaxy Watch Ultra. According to SamMobile, Samsung's Galaxy Watch Ultra is the latest smartwatch to receive an important health monitoring feature called Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification (IHRN). According to Samsung, the IRHN feature works with the on-demand Electrocardiogram (ECG) function and continuously checks for signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib). All of this happens thanks to the existing BioActive sensors available on the new and recent models of the Samsung Galaxy Watch. According to Samsung, the FDA has cleared the feature to help detect early signs of AFib. A smartwatch, unlike a standalone blood pressure monitor (some of which offer AFib detection), is always on the wearer's wrist and so can be activated when needed. A feature like this is indeed useful on a smartwatch, as most AFib cases are asymptomatic. While Samsung had announced the feature many years ago with previous models of the Galaxy Watch. The feature, according to the source, only arrives in India now as certifications for the same did take a while. Samsung had made an official announcement back in May 2023 about getting clearance to roll out the feature on global models. Clearances in India probably took even longer. Other features that only recently made it to Galaxy Watch models in India include Blood Pressure monitoring and Electrocardiogram (ECG) as well. To enable the feature, users will need to install the Samsung Health Monitor app, which is a separate app that also enables the previously released Blood Pressure monitoring and ECG features. The app recently received a 58MB update to version 1.3.4.004. Once updated, the feature will have to be enabled via a notification in the app. The Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra was announced in July 2024 alongside the new Galaxy Watch 7. Unlike 2022, Samsung seems to have gotten rid of the Pro branding from its older model altogether and has settled for an ‘Ultra' branding for its top-tier do-it-all smartwatch. Both smartwatches are powered by Google's Wear OS with Samsung's One UI skinning. https://www.gadgets360.com/wearables/news/samsung-galaxy-watch-ultra-irhn-irregular-heart-rhythm-monitoring-india-6420553

  23. Unisoc, formerly Spreadtrum, a well-known developer of various application processors from China, has introduced what it claims to be the world's first security chip based on RISC-V, an open instruction set architecture (ISA). The E450R is said to offer significant performance for security algorithms, reports IT Home. The key feature of the E450R is its asymmetric cryptographic PKE algorithm engine, which is said to work 50% faster than on the predecessor. Even when the key length is increased, the chip maintains its performance, ensuring robust security without sacrificing speed, according to the source report. The E450R also offers a 50% improvement in typical transaction-based applications, which makes the chip particularly suitable for high-demand environments where quick processing is crucial, IT Home claims. In addition to its cryptographic enhancements, the E450R offers a 15% boost in the erase/write speed of its non-volatile memory (NVM). This improvement allows the chip to store more data within the same time frame, making it more efficient for applications requiring frequent memory operations. The thing that makes Unisoc particularly proud is the use of the open-source RISC-V ISA. This allowed the company to tailor its processing cores for its workloads, offering more performance at lower power compared to the traditional approach when using off-the-shelf Arm R that leverages a lot of legacy features to maintain ISA integrity, to ensure compatibility with a range of software. This takes die space and power, unlike the case of RISC-V. Given the fact that Unisoc provides an API and maintains the software/firmware stack, there is no problem with software (in)compatibility of the E450R, at least IT Home and Unisoc do not mention this factor specifically. Speaking of software, Unisoc claims that the chip's tailor-made microarchitecture reduces application code size by 30% and speeds up application load time by 120%, which is crucial for real-time applications. The E450R has already achieved several important certifications, including National Cryptography Level 2, UnionPay chip and embedded software security certifications, and the CCRC IT EAL4+ certification. The only question we now have is can China's secret services bypass the level of security that the Unisoc E450R offers? https://www.tomshardware.com/software/security-software/chinas-unisoc-launches-worlds-first-open-architecture-risc-v-security-chip
  24. It’s not every day that you come across a monkey-themed meme coin. Moreover, it’s even more difficult to find a meme coin with utility and vision. Chimpzee is such a project that helps users earn passive income and, at the same time, save the environment and animals. Additionally, the project offers financial contributions to organizations that help to find endangered species and fight deforestation. What is this meme coin doing differently than others? Let’s dig deeper. Chimpzee in a nutshell Chimpzee project has an interesting story behind its origin. Chimpzee is the creation of a scientist named Max Chimpzeeski. The project was born with a mission to save the planet from the effects of climate change. Chimpzee is the culmination of different elements that have come together as an ecosystem. It will have different features like the Chimpzee Store (Shop2Earn), the NFT Marketplace (Trade2Earn), and the Zero Tolerance Game (Play2Earn). More on these below. A portion of the profits from all these platforms is kept aside and donated to firms that help protect the forest, fight climate change and save animals. Understanding Chimpzee ecosystem The Chimpzee ecosystem mainly consists of three platforms that allow its users to earn passive income. Shop2Earn – Shop2Earn is the commerce platform of the Chimpzee Ecosystem. It is nothing but a store for Chimpzee investors to buy different Chimpzee merchandise. Those who purchase CHMPZ tokens will receive free CHMPZ coins. Additionally, a percentage of the profit is set aside for organizations that help the environment. Trade2Earn – Trade2Earn is the NFT marketplace of the Chimpzee ecosystem. It will be one of the first marketplaces that gives away a part of its trading profits to everyone who uses the platform. Investors who hold a Chimpzee NFT passport or actively trade on the platform will receive a portion of the trading fees. Play2Earn – Play2Earn will be a gaming platform of the Chimpzee ecosystem. It is basically a zero tolerance game that rewards the players with free CHMPZ coins when they hit specific milestones. The name zero tolerance implies how the Chimpzee Project is standing up against animal cruelty and deforestation. Next meme coin to watch Climate change, animal cruelty and deforestation are ongoing issues faced globally. Chimpzee has evaluated the intensity of the issues and has kept aside 10% of its total coin supply to a charity wallet. The project has already supported organizations like Rainforest Rescue, Forgotten Animals, WILD, The Giving Block, One Tree Planted, etc. Chimpzee also has plans to launch an online donation tracker to improve the transparency of the project’s contribution. CHMPZ token has already completed its presale successfully and is launched on exchanges like MEXC, BitMart and P2B. The project is also listed on CoinMarketCap and CoinGecko. Details from the Chimpzee Staking page show that users can earn up to 40% APY by staking their tokens. As of now, 780 investors have staked over 7.2 billion CHMPZ tokens. Chimpzee also offers four types of NFT passports. These passports give the holders several perks and additional rewards. For instance, they can also be staked to earn passive income. If you are someone who wishes to be a part of a meme coin with the utility and vision of saving the earth, Chimpzee is definitely worth looking into. With Chimpzee, you can save animals, forests and the planet and, at the same time, earn free passive income. https://cryptonews.com/news/chimpzee-lets-you-earn-free-staking-rewards-while-saving-animals-and-the-environment-heres-how.htm
  25. NEW DELHI: Indian table tennis player Archana Kamath has made the difficult decision to step away from elite sports to pursue a Master's in Public Policy at the University of Michigan. This move marks a significant shift for the 24-year-old, who achieved notable success representing India at the highest level, including the recent Paris Olympics. Despite her passion for table tennis, academics have always been a priority for Kamath. Her stellar academic record, including top marks in her 10th and 12th exams, reflects her commitment to education. This dedication led her to pursue a Master's in International Relations after completing her Bachelor's in Economics. Now, she embarks on her second Master's degree, driven by a desire to serve India in the realm of public policy. "I have always liked studying, as much as table tennis. I had inquired about this course in Michigan last year as well but then we qualified for the Paris Olympics as a team for the first time, and I wanted to focus on that," Kamath told PTI. Kamath emphasized that her decision is not financially motivated, adding, "Now that the Olympics are done, I want to study more and come back to India after two years and serve the people in a different capacity. My decision has nothing to do with financial returns. I have got all the support I have needed while playing for India, which has been the biggest honour." While acknowledging the inevitable void left by leaving elite sports, Kamath finds solace in continuing to play table tennis recreationally in the US. "The best thing about the Olympics was being with seniors like Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra. The environment was so good. I also got to meet Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz. I made memories for life there. I have also loved fighting for my country and that is something I will miss the most. I hope to keep playing here (in the US)," she added. Looking ahead, Kamath envisions a future contributing to India's development through public service. Inspired by renowned economist Sanjeev Sanyal, she aims to leverage her academic pursuits to make a tangible impact. https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/more-sports/others/my-decision-has-nothing-to-do-with-financial-returns-archana-kamath-on-quitting-table-tennis-for-further-studies/articleshow/112713672.cms
