Interest rates are expected to be cut by the Bank of England later, in a move closely watched by households and economists. Analysts predict the benchmark rate will be cut from 4.75% to 4.5%, given the recent weakness in the UK economy which has seen slow growth. The Bank uses interest rates as its main tool for controlling inflation, which is currently above the Bank's target. However, inflation unexpectedly dipped at the end of last year, raising expectations of a rate cut. Inflation is forecast to rise again though, partly due to changes in the Budget as well as uncertainty around US President Donald Trump's threatened use of tariffs. If he does introduce import taxes on countries, it could lead to inflationary pressure globally, causing a knock-on effect on price rises in the UK. Why do interest rates change? The Bank moves rates up and down to try to control inflation, which measures the pace of overall price rises. By raising rates, borrowing is made more expensive, so people have less money to spend. People may also be encouraged to save more. In turn, this reduces demand for goods and slows the rate at which prices are rising. But it is a balancing act - increasing borrowing costs risks harming the economy as it discourages businesses from investing and creating more jobs. Once price rises are more under control, then the Bank will consider lowering interest rates. Japan's real wages fell 0.2 percent from a year earlier in 2024, marking the third consecutive year of decline, as pay hikes that grew at the fastest pace in 33 years failed to keep pace with rising prices, government data showed Wednesday. Pakistan’s headline inflation clocked in at 2.4% on a year-on-year basis in January 2025, a reading below that of December 2024 when it stood at 4.1%, showed Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) data on Monday. On a month-on-month basis, CPI increased by 0.2% in January 2025 as compared to 0.1% in the previous month and an increase of 1.8% in January 2024. This is the “lowest reading in 111 months,” said Topline Securities. Experts attributed the decline in inflation to a high base effect and lower food inflation. CPI inflation average during 7MFY25 stood at 6.5% as compared to 28.73% in 7MFY24. Inflation in Pakistan has been a significant and persistent economic challenge, particularly in recent years. In May 2023, the CPI inflation rate hit a record high of 38%. However, it has been on a downward trajectory since then. Days ago, the Finance Division said that policy interventions and administrative actions successfully controlled inflation, leading to a reduction in the prices of essential items. Last month, in line with expectations, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) reduced the key policy rate by 100 basis points (bps), taking it down to 12%. This was the sixth successive cut in the key interest rate since June 2024 when it stood at 22%. After the policy rate decision, Governor SBP Jameel Ahmad told a presser that inflation would ease further in January before inching up in the subsequent months. Meanwhile, the latest CPI reading was even lower than the projections made by several brokerage houses. JS Global projected inflation reading to clock below 3% in January. “Ongoing sharp disinflation trend is expected to persist, with Jan-2025 CPI likely to fall to 2.8% (lowest since Nov-2015 owing to a high base affect), despite 0.6% MoM uptick,” the brokerage house said. A similar reading was given by Ismail Iqbal Securities Limited, another brokerage house. “Inflation for Jan’25 is projected at 2.9%, sharply down from 28.3% the same period last year, reflecting a significant easing in price pressures,” it said. Urban, rural inflation The PBS said CPI inflation urban decreased to 2.7% on year-on-year basis in January 2025 as compared to 4.4% in the previous month and 30.2% in January 2024. On month-on-month basis, it increased to 0.2% in January 2025 as compared to negative change of 0.1% in the previous month and an increase of 1.8% in January 2024. Benton Animal Services has seen an increased number of adoptions over the past month, thanks to an online campaign for short-term foster care. Volunteer Susan Taylor kicked off the initiative, recruiting local businesses and leaders to spread the word about how many dogs were in danger of being hurt during the recent cold snap. “I was worried about the winter weather and felt like the shelter staff would appreciate some help in keeping their dogs safe and warm. The facility's ground holds moisture, and I knew the outdoor kennel dogs needed to have a dry space,” Taylor said. “As the temperatures continued to drop, I became more worried and decided I could do more than blankets and beds and covering the kennels with canvas. I asked Mallori Howard, Animal Services Manager], if short-term fosters were an option, she said yes, and the rest is animal rescue history.” The call went out on Jan. 4. By Jan. 8, 28 out of 62 dogs had been placed in foster care. Howard said the effects have been long-lasting. “The short-term fostering was very successful. First, it helped dogs get out of the shelter's outdoor kennels during the extreme cold temperatures we had and secondly, it helped us learn more about the animals. Foster families were able to tell us if the animal was house-trained and how it acted in a home environment,” Howard said. “It is often hard to learn a dog's true personality in the shelter setting. It was also so successful because the foster families reached out to their families, friends, and social media to help promote the dog for adoption. We also had several foster fails, where the foster family adopted the dog themselves. The short term fostering has been great so we can learn more about the pet, the pet can be in a home, and the pet still spends some time at the shelter and adoption events to meet potential adopters.” Of the 28 dogs placed in short-term foster care, 17 found permanent homes. Howard said that animal services staff have been inspired by the process. “I hope to continue to launch dogs out for short-term fosters in the future where people can foster a dog for 30 days or less, and either return the dog to the shelter if it is not adopted and switch out so our longer-term dogs will have time outside the shelter and we can launch them for adoption in new ways,” she said.With the threat of extreme weather now passed, the amount of volunteer fosters has decreased. However, Howard said that the online campaign has sparked interest in volunteering in other ways, such as walking the dogs. “We stay full and have limited staff. Doggy day out and fostering are great, but we also encourage people to come out and help us walk and interact with the dogs,” she said. “Even if it is just 30 minutes, that might be the only time that dog is outside the kennel that day.” Howard said another way residents can help the shelter is by ensuring pets stay with their owners. She said the staff do everything they can to keep dogs where they belong, even if they have run away from home. “We bring in animals almost every day. One way the city can help is to microchip your animal. The shelter offers free microchipping for those in the city of Benton. To schedule an appointment, residents need to contact the shelter at 501-776-5972,” Howard said. “Second, we encourage people to reclaim their pet.
