  1. Windows 10 has an issue with the taskbar, Microsoft has admitted, while letting affected users know that a solution is in the works. If you’ve been following the news on Windows 10 problems of late, you’ll recall this one popping up with the latest June cumulative update (and the preview version of that batch of patches in late May). It affects those using the May 2021 Update, October 2020 Update and May 2020 Update, plus the November 2019 Update. How to protect your privacy in Windows 10 How to uninstall a Windows 10 update How to speed up Windows 10 Microsoft pinpoints this bug as actually creeping in with KB5001391, the preview update of May’s patching, back in late April, and observes that: “After installing KB5001391 or later updates, the news and interests button in the Windows taskbar might have blurry text on certain display configurations.” Workarounds aplenty Meantime, the obvious workaround as we’ve discussed before is simply to turn off News and interests on the taskbar (right click the icon for the app – or an empty bit of the taskbar – then left click ‘News and interests’, and select ‘Turn off’). What’s interesting here is that while Microsoft has acknowledged the visual corruption of the News and interests icon in some cases, there’s no mention of the other problems which have been reported elsewhere. That includes the taskbar system tray icons becoming corrupted, or vanishing entirely, seriously impacting the usability of Windows 10. Microsoft hasn’t commented on these other gremlins, but again, if you’re suffering these, simply dumping the ‘News and interests’ icon is a possible simple cure. If that doesn’t work for you, other options are to uninstall the cumulative update which caused the problem – not ideal, obviously – or you could try moving the taskbar to the top of the screen, as Wccftech (which spotted Microsoft’s announcement) suggests.
  2. AMD on Wednesday unveiled a version of its flagship Radeon RX 6900 XT graphics card equipped with a closed-loop liquid cooling system (LCS). The new board boasts higher GPU and memory frequencies compared to AMD's reference air-cooled card, which is already among the best graphics cards, but it will (at least initially) be available exclusively to system integrators. AMD's Radeon RX 6900 XT Liquid Cooled carries the company's Navi 21 GPU with 5120 stream processors that is clocked at up to 2250 MHz (game clock) and is accompanied with 16GB of 18Gbps GDDR6 memory. There are some Radeon RX 6900 XT graphics cards from manufacturers that have a higher GPU clock, but AMD's RX 6900 XT Liquid Cooled model is the only one to feature 18Gbps DRAM. The board is rated for a 330W thermal design power and is cooled down using AMD's custom liquid cooling system featuring a 120-mm radiator equipped with a fan. This is hardly the most powerful cooler for AMD's Big Navi that is out there, but system integrators will likely appreciate it as it fits into almost any high-end desktop computer. Unlike high-end Radeon RX 6900 XT from AMD's partners that feature three eight-pin auxiliary PCIe power connectors, the Radeon RX 6900 XT Liquid Cooled has two connectors, which are enough to deliver up to 300W of power to the board. Two connectors also mean that the card will be compatible with almost any high-performance PSU. AMD's Radeon RX 6900 XT Liquid Cooled is clearly one of the world's fastest graphics cards based on AMD's Big Navi GPU, but for some reason the company has no plans to sell it in retail, but will offer it exclusively to system integrators, according to VideoCardz. Since the Radeon RX 6900 XT Liquid Cooled will only be available to PC makers, AMD does not disclose its recommended price. Maingear will be one of the first system integrators to offer AMD's Radeon RX 6900 XT Liquid Cooled in the USA and already has a page up about it.
  3. Germany has recalled a platoon from a Nato mission in Lithuania after reports emerged of troops engaging in racist and anti-Semitic behaviour, as well as sexual assault. The allegations were first published by Der Spiegel news magazine on Monday. Announcing the decision on Twitter, German Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer said the misconduct would be "punished with all severity". Four German soldiers were initially withdrawn as part of the investigation. The troops were in Lithuania as part of Nato's "enhanced forward presence", a mission which trains local soldiers as a deterrent against Russian in a number of Eastern European countries. "The misconduct of some soldiers in Lithuania is a slap in the face of everyone who works in the Bundeswehr [German army] day after day to serve the security of our country," Ms Kramp-Karrenbauer tweeted on Wednesday. She said the entire platoon would be withdrawn with "immediate effect", and that any necessary investigations and proceedings would take place in Germany. On Tuesday, the minister said that any soldiers who knew about the incidents but did not report them would also face punishment. Germany's elite force 'to be partially disbanded' Security chief removed as Germany tackles far right According to Der Spiegel, the allegations relate to a party held at a hotel in Lithuania at the end of April. A number of troops are suspected of bullying, threatening violence, filming an incident of sexual assault against another soldier, as well as singing anti-Semitic songs. Separate allegations later emerged of sexual and racial abuse within the platoon, while some soldiers reported that a number of people sang a song to mark Adolf Hitler's birthday on 20 April, according to Der Spiegel. The German government has had to take action against suspected extremism in the armed forces on at least two occasions in recent years. Last year, Defence Minister Kramp-Karrenbauer ordered the partial dissolution of the elite KSK commando force after 20 of its members were suspected of right-wing extremism. On Tuesday however, German media quoted her as saying the KSK would not be completely disbanded following a year of reforms. In 2017 meanwhile, inspections were ordered on all German military barracks after Nazi-era memorabilia was found at two of them. German police forces have also faced controversies over extremism within their ranks. Last week, the state of Hesse dissolved the elite police force in Germany's second city of Frankfurt after a number of officers were found to be involved in extreme right-wing chat groups, which included swastikas and images of Hitler. A local official confirmed on Tuesday that a total of 49 current members of police forces in the state were found to be members of the chats.
