"If this new power plant is built,", says Janos, a tall, friendly nuclear engineer who works in Reactor block 2 of the existing nuclear power station at Paks, "it will be good for the town, and good for the country." It's a big if. Despite the Hungarian government's unswerving commitment to the Paks 2 project, despite the Russian commitment to supply the finance and technology, the Russian war in Ukraine is making the new power station less likely by the day. It is the biggest single investment in Hungarian history. The government claims it will make the country less dependent on Russia, from which Hungary gets most of its oil and gas. Critics say it will make Hungary even more dependent on Russia for much of this century. Paks 1 nuclear power station, on the shore of the Danube and an hour's drive south of Budapest, was built by the Soviet Union in the 1980s, and its four reactors still supply around 40% of Hungary's electricity needs. Their working life is due to end in the 2030s. In 2014, Prime Minster Viktor Orban signed a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin to build two new 1,200 MW reactors beside the old ones. Russia will finance the plant with a β¬10bn loan, which Hungarian consumers should pay back in their electricity bills, starting in 2026, when the plant was due to come on line. Years of delays with permits meant that ground-clearing work at the site only began last August. While Hungary has pressed ahead with Paks 2, last May Finland cancelled a similar, Russian-built plant on the Hanhikivi peninsula in mid-construction, because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The war in Ukraine is now hanging like a dark cloud over the Paks project, too. Fighting in the early days of the war around Ukraine's former nuclear plant at Chernobyl and artillery duels around the Zaporizhzhia plant, the biggest in Europe, have harmed the project. Even those who believe in Paks 2 with an almost religious zeal sound worried. "Isolation of Russia is not a solution, even in this war situation," says Attila Aszodi, former government commissioner for Paks 2. Dyed-in-the-wool opponents, such as former Green MEP Benedek Javor, are more blunt. "Paks 2 is a purely political project," he says, pointing to close relations established by Viktor Orban with Russian Vladimir Putin since 2009. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Hungarian leader has pushed back repeatedly against EU sanctions on Russia and its officials have maintained close diplomatic ties with Moscow. "From an energy perspective it's not necessary to build [Paks 2], and it's definitely not necessary to build it with the Russians," says Mr Javor. He argues the money would be better spent on renewables like solar, from which Hungary already gets 10% of its energy, and improving the electricity grid. This autumn, the government abruptly ended subsidies for households installing solar panels, because the grid could not cope with the new inputs. The Fidesz government has also made wind power practically impossible, by banning the construction of turbines within 10km (6.2 miles) of a settlement. "We might arrive at a point where Paks 2 cannot be constructed but there is no alternative," says Mr Javor. "Then Hungary will have a serious problem with the security of supply." The list of complications from the war in Ukraine is long. Many major components of the plant are supposed to be built in Russia, and transported overland. The original plan was to bring them through Ukraine and there are no obvious alternative routes. Several thousand welders are supposed to be employed. Back in 2014, everyone I asked said Ukrainian welders would be found. And the plant is not simply a Russian one. Under EU pressure, it is now a hybrid, using Russian hardware and a control system to be built by the Siemens-led, French-German consortium Framatome. The turbines are supposed to be built by GE Hungary, a subsidiary of US firm General Electric. It is hard to imagine US, German and French engineers working shoulder to shoulder with their Russian comrades, 400 km from the border of a country the Russians shell day and night. There are other question marks, too. How will Russia supply nuclear fuel? How will Hungary send highly radioactive used fuel elements back to Russia? And will the EU eventually extend sanctions to nuclear technology and employees of Russian state nuclear firm Rosatom? Nuclear power transformed Paks from a small, sleepy, riverside town into one of the richest in provincial Hungary. The streets are lined with hairdressers, clothes shops, restaurants and bars - 2,700 people work at Paks 1, with another 7,000 dependent on the plant as sub-contractors. During construction, Paks 2 is supposed to attract 10,000 more. Smart new blocks of flats are nearly finished for the Russian engineers to be employed here. But, for now, the town is holding its breath. "To tell the truth, I just don't know what will happen. I'm not a prophet. I can't predict when it will be built," says Janos, from Reactor block 2. Hungary's Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, who's in personal charge of the project, recently met Rosatom directors in Istanbul and still speaks confidently of 2030. While he is optimistic Russia will deliver on its promises, the reluctance of Hungary's EU partners to work on any Russian energy project because of the war is likely to cause Budapest future headaches. To hear more about the Paks project, listen to Nick Thorpe's Assignment on BBC World Service Radio, or Crossing Continents on BBC Radio 4, on 15 December. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-63964744

For the first time in history, the anatomical shape of the clitoris of snakes was described. Biologists say that it is heart-shaped. Never before had reptiles been thought of as having sexual intercourse for pleasure. It seems, according to a study recently published by the University of Adelaide (Australia), that the phallocentric vision of science once again clouded empirical research: snakes have clitoris, and they use it to enjoy their sexuality beyond reproduction. The find came from the university's Faculty of Biological Sciences. In charge of the biologist Megan Folwell, the team of researchers obtained the first anatomical description of this sexual organ. This is what we know. She also reads: Female orgasm: what challenges do people with a vulva face to feel pleasure? What is the clitoris and what does it work for? The clitoris is a female sexual organ that is used solely for the pleasure of females, documents the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). For centuries, not only was its operation unknown, but its existence was omitted due to a moral issue of repression of women. It seems that violent conditioning also biased scientific research. Human women are not the only ones who have this sexual organ. In fact, in general, female placental mammals have it. Among them, we can highlight the dolphins and hyenas. In addition to differentiating them from the male genitalia, this organ gives them the ability to feel pleasure when having sexual intercourse. Never before had other reptiles, like snakes, been recorded as having clitorises. For the study, the anatomy of 9 different snake species was analyzed. All of them had the sexual organ. As described by the researchers, it is heart-shaped and has millions of nerve endings. We suggest: Female hysteria, the macho story of the 'discovery' of the female orgasm A Partial Understanding of the Animal Kingdom In addition to the fact that the snake's clitoris is connected to its nervous system, the researchers say, it contains red blood cells that feed erectile tissues. None of this was known, since science had taken the body of the males as a basis for research. With this generalization, characteristics intrinsic to the body of females were completely nullified. In this case, from snakes. In this regard, Folwell assures that this omission was a purely gender issue: "THROUGHOUT THE ANIMAL KINGDOM, FEMALE GENITALS ARE OVERLOOKED COMPARED TO MALE GENITALS," THE SPECIALIST COMPLAINTED IN A STATEMENT. These findings shed light on the way in which the body of other reptiles has been analyzed. Not only that: but the evolution and reproductive development of these animals. "We are proud to contribute to this research, especially since, unfortunately, the female genitalia of all species remain taboo," concludes the specialist. https://www.ngenespanol.com/animales/como-es-el-clitoris-de-las-serpientes/

The forthcoming BMW 5 Series Touring has begun testing on wintry German roads, giving a first look at Munichβs hugely successful estate car. The new electric i5 Touring, spotted testing by our spy photographers, marks the fifth generation since the full-size estate was launched in 1991. The EV variant will be joined by petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid variants as well as the saloon bodystyle arriving in 2024. The new Touring is expected to be available with the usual raft of practicality weβve come to expect from such a competitive market. While BMW could not comment on boot space and legroom, we suspect the new estate will be a slight improvement on the current carβs 560 litres (with the seats raised) and competitive with the 480 litres on offer in the Mercedes E-Class Estate. There is little to confirm whether or not the introduction of a full-electric powertrain has affected interior space, but with the new BMW i7 losing 40 litres in boot space over its PHEV cousin, a sacrifice in some practicality is to be expected. BMW is still to confirm if the 5 Series Touring will share its underpinnings with other models, however the current car shares the same CLAR architecture that underpins the new BMW 4 Series, therefore its larger sibling could offer a similar powertrain line-up if it uses the same platform. As such, the standard i5 Touring could be offered in rear- and four-wheel drive guise with outputs ranging from 335bhp to 536bhp, the latter essentially creating an all-electric BMW M5 Touring. If it follows the same nomenclature as the BMW i4, we expect e40 and M50 nameplates to be regurgitated for both the 5 Series saloon and Touring editions. The i4 makes use of an 80.7kWh battery pack, charging at up to 210kW. This allows for a maximum official range of between 255 and 367 miles. Outside, photographs reveal an updated, sleeker headlamp design and covered kidney grilles which donβt extend beyond the front number plate (ie vertical), as on the current BMW M3 and 4 Series. At the rear, the headlamps retain BMWβs signature βLβ shape and the door handles are flush with the bodywork, as on the new BMW 2 Series. Joining these are BMWβs new-style door mirrors, as seen on the new BMW M240i. Also recently captured by our photographers was the 5 Series saloon on test at the Nurburgring. Due in 2024, it will also feature a more sedate front-end layout with blanked-off kidney grilles for the electric i5 edition, leaving out BMWβs controversial βverticalβ kidney grilles for its huge-hitting family saloon. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-bmw-5-series-touring-spotted-ahead-mid-decade-launch

Prince Harry has described how "terrifying" it was to have his brother "scream and shout" at him when they met to discuss his and Meghan's future. In a Netflix series, Prince Harry says it was his decision, not Meghan's, to leave after plans for a half-in, half-out royal life was rejected during a family meeting at Sandringham. He says his father said things that "just simply weren't true" as his grandmother, the Queen, looked on. Buckingham Palace has not commented. In the latest instalments of the docuseries, Harry and Meghan have described why they made their decision to give up their royal duties and move to the US, claiming they were not supported by the Royal Family, amid a barrage of negative press publicity mainly directed against Meghan. In Episode 4, Meghan talks in detail about how she considered taking her own life, while Prince Harry describes how he felt shame looking back over how he reacted, reverting to "Institutional Harry" rather than "husband Harry". LIVE: My brother screamed at me at royal meeting - Harry As things got worse for the pair, Prince Harry says in Episode 5 of the series that he had gone to Sandringham, the royal estate in Norfolk, in 2020 to discuss scenarios for the couple's royal role with his father, brother and grandmother the late Queen. He recalls how the meeting went, saying: "It was terrifying to have my brother scream and shout at me and my father say things that just simply weren't true, and my grandmother quietly sit there and sort of take it all in." He said his preference had been to be half in, half out of the Royal Family, with him and Meghan doing their own jobs but also supporting the Queen, but it was soon clear that was not a possibility. "It became very clear, very quickly that that goal was not up for discussion," he said. As for the Queen, he said her ultimate goal and responsibility had been the institution of the Royal Family. Harry also said a joint statement was put out after the meeting without his permission in his and his brother's name, denying a story that William had bullied him out of the Royal Family. He described the move as a "lie to protect my brother", adding: "There was no other option at this point. I said, 'we need to get out of here'." He said Meghan had not asked to leave and that saying it was at her instigation was "misogyny at its best". In the latest episodes, Meghan speaks about how she considered taking her own life before stepping back from the Royal Family. "It was like 'all of this will stop if I'm not here,'" she said. Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, said hearing her daughter's thoughts "broke my heart". After his wife had confided in him about her struggles, Prince Harry said he had been devastated. But, he said he had been "trained" to worry more about what people were going to think, and he "hated himself" for that. "What she needed was so much more than I was able to give," he added. Other revelations from the series include: Prince Harry said he was shocked after being blocked from seeing the Queen when returning from Vancouver to discuss moving away from the UK The royal spoke about "a dirty game" within the royal press setup, which engages in "constant briefings" and is involved in "the leaking and planting of stories" He also said he believed press coverage in the Mail on Sunday was linked to Meghan's miscarriage. The Mail on Sunday is yet to comment. Meghan said her dad speaking to the press about her and the Royal Family was "incredibly painful," adding that it was "very embarrassing for the family" Beyonce texted Meghan her support after her interview with Oprah Winfrey last year, with Meghan in disbelief that the musician knew who she was Prince Harry said attending Prince Philip's funeral "was hard", with the Duke forced to discuss family tensions with his father and brother. He claims that he "had to make peace" that he was "never going to get genuine accountability or a genuine apology" Speaking about the tabloid media and why they stepped down from royal duties, Meghan says: "I wasn't even being thrown to the wolves, I was being fed to the wolves" Harry talks about the breakdown of his relationship with his brother - accusing William's office of trading stories - something they "promised" they would never do when they were younger The prince also describes how "people" were upset that Meghan was "'stealing the limelight' or doing the job better than the person who is born to do this" During her struggles, Meghan said she wanted to seek help but she "wasn't allowed to". Without being specific as to who "they" were, she said: "They were concerned about how that would look for the institution." The prince added: "They knew how bad it was. They thought 'Why couldn't she just deal with it?' As if to say, well, 'everybody else has dealt with it, why can't she deal with it?' But this was different. It was really different." A teary Ms Ragland also shared her account of that time in the episode, adding that her daughter's words were "not easy for a mum to hear". In a reference to press intrusion in her daughter's life, she said: "I knew it was bad, but to just constantly be picked at by these vultures, just picking away at her spirit, that she would actually think of not wanting to be here." The final three episodes of the six-part series, titled Harry & Meghan, were released on Thursday. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-63983062

Miguel Γngel 'SupermΓ‘n' LΓ³pez is no longer a rider for the Astana team, the squad reported on Monday. "The Astana Qazaqstan team discovered new elements that show the probable connection of Miguel Γngel LΓ³pez with Dr. Marcos Maynar," the official statement said. (Nairo Quintana got married: first images of his marriage, video) (This is how they expelled a Croatian model, a sensation in Qatar, from the stadium, video) And he added: "Consequently, the team had no other solution than to terminate the contract between the team and the rider, based on breaches of said contract and the internal rules of the team, with immediate effect. To preserve the rights of the team and the rider, we do not further comment will be made." The problem Last November, the ex-cyclist and former sports director Vicente Belda Vicedo, his son Vicente Belda GarcΓa, a masseuse for the Astana team, and the Colombian cyclist are some of those investigated in the plot dedicated to the distribution of prohibited drugs for doping athletes and which has dismantled the Central Operative Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard. It was said on that occasion that both were related to the doctor and professor at the University of Extremadura (UNEX) Maynar, who was arrested last May for, among other alleged crimes, illegal drug trafficking and whom a judge released with charges after declaring in Court number four of CΓ‘ceres. According to the sources, it was supposedly Maynar who prepared the athletes' training sessions, including a nutritional supplement with drugs and substances prohibited in sports. And to make the "cocktail" always took into account the customer's chances of victory in its competitions. LΓ³pez, that time, denied the accusations in a statement. "Given the news published in different media in which it is stated that I am being investigated in a supposed doping network, he declared that it is not true," LΓ³pez said last November. And he added: "Currently I do not have any active investigation process and my lawyers would initiate the corresponding legal actions if necessary." https://www.eltiempo.com/deportes/ciclismo/miguel-angel-lopez-despedido-del-equipo-astana-725243

Also known as the 'silver bear', the Mexican gray bear was hunted to extinction as a 'plague' to its northern neighbors. This is his story. The Mexican gray bear dominated the north of the country. Durango, Chihuahua and Sonora were the territories where this brown bear subspecies developed for thousands of years. The records of Mexican Biodiversity, the agency that records the po[CENSORED]tions of species in Mexico, document that it also reached the south of the current United States. After inhabiting the forests of this area in North America for millennia, humans decided that the Mexican grizzly bear was a pest that had to be eradicated. And they do it like that. This is the story of its extinction. What was the Mexican gray bear like? One of the first records of the species dates from 1914. Also known by its scientific name, Ursus aretos nelsonis, the Mexican gray bear weighed more than 300 kilos when it reached adulthood. On all fours, it reached a meter in height. When he stood upright, he could be up to 180 centimeters tall. The historical records that are preserved of the species indicate that it was very similar to the grizzly bear, typical of natural reserves in the United States. This made it, according to Mexican Biodiversity, one of the "largest land animals in the Mexican Republic." In the interior of the country, it inhabited the grasslands and mountainous areas brimming with pine trees. It is estimated that it began to po[CENSORED]te northern Mexico towards the end of the last ice age, approximately 10,000 years ago. Like other groups of the species, it was classified as an omnivorous mammal. That is, it fed on plants and animals. In his daily diet, the following foods were included: leaves and fruits forest insects smaller animals Carrion Despite its millennial presence in the region, it took a few decades for humans to completely exterminate it. Considered a nuisance to livestock and irresponsible human activities, the Mexican grizzly bear preyed on lead and deadly toxins. A rapacious campaign against the species When humans venture into wilderness, we inevitably encounter life forms that have been there. Many times, for billions of years. Although the stay of the Mexican gray bear in the north of the country was not that old, the reality is that the species did arrive there before us. Even so, in favor of cattle ranching and urban expansion, the local government consented to the indiscriminate hunting of the gray bear. Not only that: it was promoted during the 1960s that they be poisoned en masse. A similar process was submitted to the gray wolf, which had the same fate. Towards the end of the decade, the federal government granted both species the status of 'protected species'. However, the paperwork was slower than human activity in the field. https://www.ngenespanol.com/animales/oso-gris-mexicano-por-que-se-extinguio/

INTRODUCTION When you set out to investigate the plush and highly specialised nature of the new, longer Bentley Bentayga EWB, itβs hard to know whether to start at the front of this mighty machine, or the rear. In the driverβs seat, you have access to new standards of ride and road ability brought by the combination of a 180mm-longer wheelbase than the regular Bentley Bentayga and an all-new four-wheel steering system that improves both manoeuvrability and high-speed stability. In the rear β after youβve stepped through a bigger and now power-assisted door β you get access to the most spacious super-luxury accommodation going in a production car, even against the long-wheelbase Range Rover and Rolls-Royce Cullinan. Thereβs a choice of three seating set-ups: a conventional three-seat bench, a novel two-plus-one layout (two big seats and a minimal central perch) or, as in our test car, so-called Airline Seating that consists of two multi-adjustable throne-like rear buckets, which are far better and more widely configurable than those offered by any airline we know. Overlaying the lot is a new concentration on reducing noise, vibration and harshness, especially in the carβs rear compartment β not that the shorter Bentayga model is any slouch in that department. But this new EWB is now very much Bentleyβs flagship, and the best choice for those who prefer to be chauffeur driven. For the time being, the EWBβs one and only available powertrain is Bentaygaβs familiar V8 β a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 shared with Audi that has 542bhp on tap, drives all four wheels (widely and smartly spreading torque around the wheels according to load) through an eight-speed auto. Despite a hefty 2.5-tonne kerb weight, the EWB can turn in a 0-60mph sprint time of 4.5sec and has a 180mph top speed. A plug-in hybrid powertrain, whose petrol-powered component is a 3.0-litre Volkswagen Group V6, is already offered in the original, shorter Bentayga and looks a certainty for the EWB when demand builds (and, doubtless, computer chips become more freely available). Of course, the Bentayga feels fundamentally similar on the road to its shorter sibling, but there is a definite advantage to ride quality from the longer wheelbase, although body roll is still quelled by the same extremely efficient 48V active roll control system, and the EWB uses the familiar three-mode air suspension system. Nobody could quibble with either Bentley SUVβs ride comfort, but those determined to quibble would say a Range Rover had an advantage in low-speed plushness and quietness over bumps. However, the long-wheelbase Bentaygaβs most striking feature is its four-wheel steering system, which decreases the turning circle to an extraordinarily tight 11.8m at parking speeds but also turns the rear wheels minutely in the same direction as the fronts during energetic higher-speed manoeuvres β such as forced lane changes β to increase stability. There is a resulting 'king of the road' feeling that needs to be experienced to be believed: only the Bentaygaβs considerable body width now affects its ability in really tight going, such as inner-London streets. There are a few quibbles. The steering in the car we tried suffered from minor levels of stiction around the straight-ahead that mean it needed more concentration than its best rivals. And although the cabin assembly and materials quality are among the finest available at any price, the fiddly switchgear (although beautifully made) is starting to look distinctly old-school. Weβre putting money on this being an important area for progress in the next model, which must be well under way given that the first production Bentayga saw the light of day in 2015. Our only other meaningful quibble is one weβve raised before: a tendency for this V8-engined model to hesitate a moment too long when 'toed' away from a traffic light, a characteristic that encourages the driver to press harder and be rewarded, a moment later, with more urge than they want or need. In this era of electric cars with extremely precise departure from rest, this also looks old-school. Yet the quibbles are minor against the achievements. So good is the new EWBβs all-round ability that (Β£16,000-ish long wheelbase price premium apart) it becomes difficult to make much of a case for choosing the shorter variant. This newer model improves markedly on the originalβs rear space, stability, manoeuvrability and even the visual balance of its styling to such an extent that, to our mind, it decisively replaces the original as the Bentley Bentayga of choice. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/bentley/bentayga-ewb

The president of the European Parliament has warned that "European democracy is under attack", following allegations that Qatar bribed EU officials to win influence. Roberta Metsola said that "open, free, democratic societies are under attack". Belgian police have arrested four people, among them European Parliament Vice-President Eva Kaili. The four have been charged with corruption and money-laundering. Qatar has denied wrongdoing. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the accusations were "very serious" and called for the creation of a new EU ethics body. The BBC's Brussels correspondent, Jessica Parker, says details released by Belgian authorities in the last few days left many people's jaws on the floor. MEPs who spoke to our correspondent say they are shocked by both the scale and blatancy of the accusations. Belgian police seized cash worth about β¬600,000 ($632,000; Β£515,000) in 16 searches in Brussels on Friday. Computers and mobile phones were also taken. No suspects have been publicly named, but Ms Kaili is understood to be among those who have been indicted. Ms Kaili - an MEP for eight years - was suspended from her duties as one of 14 vice-presidents by the president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola. She has also been suspended from the parliament's Socialists and Democrats Group and expelled from the Greek centre-left Pasok party. Prosecutors in Greece have reportedly frozen all of Ms Kaili's assets. Watchdogs and opposition MEPs said the bribery investigation could represent one of the biggest corruption scandals in European Parliament history. Ms von der Leyen said confidence in European institutions required the highest ethical standards. "It is a question of confidence of people into our institutions, and this confidence of trust into our institutions needs higher standards," she said. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban mocked the EU after the allegations surfaced. Tweeting a photo of former US presidents Ronald Reagan and George HW Bush that is often used as a meme, he referred to the European Commission's recommendation to freeze billions of euros in funds earmarked for Hungary. The BBC is not responsible for the content of external sites.View original tweet on Twitter Prosecutors said they suspected a Gulf state had been influencing economic and political decisions of the parliament for several months, especially by targeting aides. Local media has named the state as Qatar, although the Qatari government said any claims of misconduct were "gravely misinformed". Ms Kaili's responsibilities as vice-president include the Middle East. She has been a defender of Qatar in the past. The European Parliament is the EU's only directly elected institution. Some 705 members of parliament, elected by voters in the 27 nations which make up the EU, meet to scrutinise proposed legislation and vote through European law. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-63941509
