False claims about the spread of a cholera outbreak in northern Mozambique have led to violent protests and deaths, according to health officials. The World Health Organization (WHO) has highlighted instances in which misinformation about the disease has contributed to the unrest. Through social media posts and local media reports, we've looked into some of these protests to understand what was behind the trouble. In one recent incident, a man was beaten to death in the town of Gurue in Zambezia province by people who falsely accused him of spreading cholera, according to health officials. The event was captured in a graphic video seen by the BBC that has been circulating on social messaging apps and shows the body of a man with a large crowd looking on. In another protest, four people were killed as police battled a group attacking homes and property belonging to local officials in Nacala Porto in Nam[CENSORED] province. Further north in Cabo Delgado province, police fired into the air to disperse a crowd trying to attack a health centre in Meluco district. What do people believe? It is unclear what is fuelling the misinformation - which is largely spreading through word of mouth - although our monitoring of social media has provided some insight. Cholera thrives in conditions where water sanitation is inadequate. Some online posts claim falsely that measures implemented by local health officials, such as adding chlorine to water supplies and the use of purifiers, are in fact spreading the disease. The BBC's Jose Tembe in Maputo says almost all violent cases related to cholera stem from misinformation. "Also targeted are grassroots leaders who mobilise people to use the purifiers. The leaders are falsely thought to be part of the alleged group spreading the water-borne disease," he says. In a caption accompanying the video of the killing in Garue, the victim was alleged to have distributed infected "dust" at a property in the area. The WHO Africa representative in Mozambique, Severin von Xylander, says misinformation is dangerous because it can fuel behaviour that drives the spread of disease. Mozambique has been battling an outbreak of the disease since September last year. It's just one of many countries in the region facing rising cases of cholera, including South Africa, Malawi, Zimbabwe, DR Congo and Kenya. "This, in turn, undermines trust in health authorities, which hampers public health responses and ultimately prolongs outbreaks." https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-65707334

China's cyberspace regulator said 1.4 million social media posts have been deleted following a two-month probe into alleged misinformation, illegal profiteering, and impersonation of state officials, among other "pronounced problems". The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) said in a statement on Friday it had closed 67,000 social media accounts and deleted hundreds of thousands of posts between March 10 and May 22 as part of a broader "rectification" campaign. Since 2021, China has targeted billions of social media accounts in a bid to "clean" its cyberspace and make it easier for authorities to control. The latest crackdown targeted accounts on po[CENSORED]r Chinese social media apps including WeChat, Douyin, and Weibo that fall under the category of "self media," a term that broadly refers to accounts that publish news and information but are not government-run or state-approved. Beijing frequently arrests citizens and censors accounts for publishing or sharing factual information considered sensitive or critical of the Communist Party, the government or the military, especially when such information goes viral. Of the 67,000 accounts that were permanently closed, almost 8,000 were taken down for "spreading fake news, rumours, and harmful information," according to CAC. Around 930,000 other accounts received less severe punishments, from being removed of all followers to the suspension or cancellation of profit-making privileges. In a separate campaign, the regulator recently closed over 100,000 accounts that allegedly misrepresented news anchors and media agencies to counter the rise of online fake news coverage aided by AI technologies. The CAC on Friday said its latest campaign had targeted almost 13,000 counterfeit military accounts, with names such as "Chinese Red Army Command", "Chinese Anti-terrorist Force" and "Strategic Missile Force". Some 25,000 other accounts were targeted for impersonating public institutions, such as disease and prevention control centers and state-run research institutes. Almost 187,000 were punished for impersonating news media businesses, while over 430,000 allegedly offered professional advice or educational services without having relevant professional qualifications. Around 45,000 accounts were closed for "hyping hot issues, clout-chasing and illegal monetisation." The regulator said it had "actively coordinated with public security, market supervision and other departments, to deliver a heavy blow and rectify illegal 'self-media'." "At the same time, (we) also call on the majority of netizens to actively participate in monitoring and reporting (illegal 'self-media'), provide clues ... and jointly maintain a clean cyberspace," it added. https://www.gadgets360.com/internet/news/china-self-media-crackdown-1-4-million-social-posts-deleted-misinformation-profiteering-impersonation-4071689

Introduction The Motorola Edge lineup has seen some restructuring this year, with the Pro punching slightly above last year's model and aspiring for some Ultra-ness. The vanilla Edge 40 joins it on this upward trend in some ways, possibly making it more difficult for a 30 Fusion successor to find a spot in the ranks in the Fall, though it's not all upgrades. The chipset of choice is more of a sidestep, albeit with a twist. A Dimensity 8020 replaces the Snapdragon 778G+ - both powerful midrange options, but the new Mediatek chip may have the upper hand in the GPU department. Unchanged is the primary camera - or, rather, that's the initial impression, because it's the same 50MP 1/1.55" sensor and it still has OIS. What's new on this one is the brighter lens, at f/1.4 vs. the f/1.8 aperture of the old model. In that sense this regular Edge 40 is pro-er than the Pro, which has the f/1.8 lens. So that can count as an upgrade. Not quite so with the ultrawide camera, where the you get the 13MP unit we saw on the Edge 30 Fusion, as opposed to the 50MP ones on both the Edge 30 and the Edge 40 Pro. There still is autofocus on this one, which some makers don't include on high-end models, so while technically a year-on-year downgrade, the ultrawide isn't too bad. An important generational improvement will be hard to see outside of the specsheet or... unforeseen circumstances, but the Edge 40 is IP68-rated for dust and water resistance - notable step up from the splash resistance of the predecessor. Some extra battery capacity and faster charging are also welcome developments, and that's while keeping the phone's dimensions and weight within the confines of what could pass as 'easily pocketable'. Motorola Edge 40 specs at a glance: Body: 158.4x72.0x7.6mm, 167g; Glass front, aluminum frame, plastic back or eco leather back; IP68 dust/water resistant (up to 1.5m for 30 min). Display: 6.55" P-OLED, 144Hz, HDR10+, 1200 nits (peak), 1080x2400px resolution, 20:9 aspect ratio, 402ppi. Chipset: Mediatek Dimensity 8020 (6 nm): Octa-core (4x2.6 GHz Cortex-A78 & 4x2.0 GHz Cortex-A55); Mali-G77 MC9. Memory: 128GB 8GB RAM, 256GB 8GB RAM; UFS 3.1. OS/Software: Android 13. Rear camera: Wide (main): 50 MP, f/1.4, 1/1.55", 1.0Β΅m, multi-directional PDAF, OIS; Ultra wide angle: 13 MP, f/2.2, 120Λ, 1.12Β΅m, AF. Front camera: 32 MP, f/2.4, (wide), 0.7Β΅m. Video capture: Rear camera: 4K@30fps, 1080p@30/60/120fps, 720p@960fps, HDR10, gyro-EIS; Front camera: 4K@30fps, 1080p@30/120fps. Battery: 4400mAh; 68W wired, 15W wireless. Connectivity: 5G; eSIM; Dual SIM; Wi-Fi 6e; BT 5.2; NFC. Misc: Fingerprint reader (under display, optical); stereo speakers. Motorola Edge 40 unboxing The Edge 40 ships in a sturdy two-piece recycled cardboard box - same as all recent Moto Edges, with the exception of the black-colored (but otherwise equally as recycled) 40 Pro package. There's no plastic used for packaging on this one either. Inside, you get 68W adapter and a USB-C cable to go with it. Also included is a clear plastic snap-on back for protection, though is debatable whether you'll want to use it if you get one of the colorways with a faux leather back. https://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_edge_40-review-2570.php

AMD Ryzen 5 7600X & 7600 6-Core Desktop CPUs are now available for a mind-blowing price below $200 US in China. Chinese AMD Ryzen 5 7600X & 7600 Desktop CPU Prices Now Less Than $200 US, Almost 40% Below MSRP The AMD Ryzen 5 7600X and Ryzen 5 7600 Desktop CPUs are currently the only entry-level options within the Ryzen 7000 family. Both chips feature 6 cores, 12 threads, 6 MB of L2 cache, and 32 MB of L3 cache. Clock speeds are maintained at a 5.3 GHz boost at a TDP of 105 Watts for the Ryzen 5 7600X and a 5.1 GHz boost at a TDP of 65W for the Ryzen 5 7600. Both processors offer very similar performance with the Ryzen 5 7600 obviously being the better value at MSRP pricing since it comes with higher efficiency. However, what happens if both CPUs are priced the same and that too below MSRP? Well, this has happened in China where retailer, JD.com, is offering the AMD Ryzen 5 7600X & Ryzen 5 7600 for a price below $200 US. Ryzen 5 7600X - 1299 RMB ($183 US) @ JD.com Ryzen 5 7600 - 1299 RMB ($183 US) @ JD.com The retailer has listed both the AMD Ryzen 5 7600X & Ryzen 5 7600 for 1299 RMB which converts to $183 US. That's a major price decrease versus the original MSRP that these chips started from. The AMD Ryzen 5 7600X started at $299 US at launch which makes this an almost -40% price drop while the Ryzen 5 7600 launched at $249 US, making this a -27% price drop. The AMD Ryzen 5 7600 also comes packed with a Wraith Stealth air cooler which is great considering you won't need anything more than that on this 65W chip. You can also find the higher-end AMD Ryzen 9 7950X listed below $500 US. For 3499 RMB, the chip can be bought for $495 US which is definitely a stellar price for a chip with 16 Zen 4 cores. https://wccftech.com/amd-ryzen-5-7600x-7600-available-below-200-us-china-both-chips-priced-at-183-us/

Russia has warned Western supplies of weapons to Ukraine risk escalating the war to levels not seen so far. Andrei Kelin, Russia's ambassador to the UK, told the BBC his country had "enormous resources" and it was yet to "act very seriously". His remarks come despite more than a year of fighting and widespread evidence of Russian war crimes. In the interview with Laura Kuenssberg, he suggested he was offended when challenged about Russia's conduct. Speaking exclusively to the BBC, Mr Kelin warned of a "new dimension" in the war. Insisting Russia "hasn't just started yet to act very seriously", the ambassador said "Russia is 16 times bigger than Ukraine. We have enormous resources." The length of the conflict, he said, "depends on the efforts in escalation of war that is being undertaken by Nato countries, especially by the UK". He added: "Sooner or later, of course, this escalation may get a new dimension which we do not need and we do not want. We can make peace tomorrow." 'We're ready to begin counter-offensive' - Ukraine Russia attack on hospital 'pure atrocity' - Zelensky Hundreds of expelled Germans set to leave Russia The ambassador's comments came as one of Ukraine's most senior security officials, Oleksiy Danilov, told the BBC the country is ready to launch its long expected counter-offensive against Russian forces. But Mr Kelin's claim that Russia has "enormous resources" available to fight clashes with multiple reports on the ground of its forces being poorly equipped and without proper training. Those warnings have even come from the head of Russia's Wagner mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, who has been heavily involved in the conflict. He has been one of Vladimir Putin's staunchest supporters, but has been increasingly vocal and critical of the regime, suggesting in the last few days "we could lose Russia" if the war carried on without extra resources being provided. Earlier this month he publicly scolded Putin's ministers in a post on social media, surrounded by dead bodies of his fighters. "Where is the... ammunition?", he said. "They came here as volunteers and die for you to fatten yourselves in your mahogany offices." The denial of the situation on the ground by Mr Kelin was accompanied by his repetition of baseless claims about Russia's invasion, which he still insisted on calling a "special military operation". Mr Kelin was speaking in his residence, underneath a chandelier, where the chairs are gilt and coffee served by staff with white gloves. He tried to blame Ukraine for provoking the conflict. It's a familiar and untrue claim that has been used by Russian leaders for more than a year to try to justify its illegal invasion of Ukraine in the first place. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-65720980

The study reveals new information about the carnivorous dinosaur Irritator challengeri, but the research has been criticized because the fossils may have been illegally removed from Brazil. A large predatory dinosaur related to Spinosaurus may have scooped up prey "like a pelican" by extending its lower jaw, European researchers propose in a new study. But the findings have upset some paleontologists who contest that the fossils were illegally taken from Brazil and should be returned to their country of origin. The dinosaur at the center of the controversy is Irritator challengeri, a member of the family Spinosauridae β a group of bipedal, carnivorous dinosaurs with long, crocodilian-like snouts. The species, which grew to a max length of around 21 feet (6.5 meters), was first described in 1996 from 115 million-year-old fossils uncovered in the Araripe Basin of northeastern Brazil and later shipped to Germany, where they now reside in the Stuttgart Museum of Natural History in the state of Baden-WΓΌrttemberg. In the new study, which was published in the journal Palaeontologia Electronica, researchers digitally reconstructed the skull from the I. challengeri specimen housed in Stuttgart and discovered that the species' lower jaw could spread out to the sides, widening the animal's pharynx, the area behind the nose and mouth. This is similar to how a pelican widens its lower beak to scoop up small fish, suggesting that I. challengeri likely fed in the same way, the researchers wrote in a statement. The new analysis also revealed that, due to its eye placement, I. challengeri would have naturally inclined its snout at a 45-degree angle and been capable of rapid-yet-weak bites. When combined, these features suggest that the snout would have been well suited to quickly scooping prey out of shallow water, the researchers wrote. https://www.livescience.com/animals/dinosaurs/massive-dino-from-brazil-ate-like-a-pelican-controversial-new-study-finds-why-is-it-causing-an-uproar

BMW will offer hands-free driving capability in the UK on a range of models from next year, the company has said. Drivers will be able to remove their hands from the steering wheel in all models of the new 5-series range including the electric i5, as well as in the BMW i7 large electric saloon and the iX electric SUV, Matt Bacon, head of product for BMWβs large models in the UK, told Autocar. BMW is taking advantage of new rules in the UK that allow drivers to take their hands off the wheel providing they are still paying attention to the road, sometimes called Level 2+ in the autonomy categorisation scale. BMW will follow Ford, which is rolling out its BlueCruise hand-free system on the Ford Mustang Mach E electric SUV in the UK. The BMW system enabling this change is called Highway Assistant in the US, which the company is pushing to be renamed Motorway Assistant in the UK, Bacon said. The feature is part of Driving Assistant Professional, which is available in the new 5-series on top of Tech Pack Plus, which includes adaptive cruise control and lane centreing. BMW has yet to finalise whether the system will be available as a monthly subscription, as it is in the Ford Mustang Mach E, or a one-off fee at purchase. The extra cost is partly to pay for the licence fee for the higher definition mapping needed to better locate the car, BMW said. The exact roads the system will work on have yet to be determined, Bacon said, although the minimum requirement is that that are dual carriageways with a central divider. The car will alert you if you drive onto a qualifying road. Ford has said roads covered by BlueCruise will include the M25 and M40. The BMW will recognise whether you are paying attention to the road ahead via cameras positioned in front of the driver in the information screen. The L2+ system will harness the carβs Active Lane Change Assistant to allow the driver to change lanes without needing to place their hands on the wheel. The car suggests a lane change which the driver confirms by looking into the side mirror. The same driver monitoring cameras will track the driversβ line of sight, okaying the move. BMW has said it will expand this autonomy to include βaddress-to-addressβ level two-plus capability on its Neue Klasse EVs, due from 2025. Meanwhile Porsche is expected to offer L2+ hands-off, eyes-on driving on its new electric Macan arriving next year as part of the Supervision package supplier by Intel-owned Mobileye, which includes 11 cameras. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/bmw-launch-hands-driving-uk-next-year

Rodrygo scored twice as Real Madrid came from behind to beat Sevilla in their penultimate game of the La Liga season. Rafa Mir fired Sevilla into the lead after Bryan Gil's shot was blocked. Rodrygo placed a perfect free-kick into the bottom corner and then scored a fine solo goal for second-placed Real. Sevilla ended the game with 10 men as Marcos Acuna was shown his fourth red card of the season, this time for a wild lunge on Dani Ceballos. Sevilla, 10th in the table, could be facing a first season without European football since 2012-13 - unless they beat Roma in the Europa League final on Wednesday. Madrid, who won the Copa del Rey, Fifa Club World Cup and Uefa Super Cup this season, were without the injured Karim Benzema and Vinicius Jr. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/65735456

In the early morning haze, women dressed in black and men with grim expressions gather in Cairo's centuries-old Sayyida Nafisa cemetery. But they are not here to bury their relatives. They are here to exhume them. "This is a double trauma," says Iman, sobbing as she directs proceedings. "First my mother - my mentor - passed away last year. Now I am digging up her fresh body and my grandparents' remains, putting them in sacks, and driving away to rebury them in new graves in the desert." Iman's story is not unusual. In the past two years, the locations of several thousand graves in Historic Cairo, a Unesco World Heritage Site, have been razed. They include some in the famous City of the Dead. The Egyptian government is clearing a wide area to make way for new main roads and flyover bridges, which it says will improve traffic flow in the sprawling, congested megacity, home to about 20 million people. These will also connect the heart of the capital with a new administrative one being built 45km (28 miles) to the east, a flagship mega-project costing billions of dollars. The developments are being pitched as part of an effort to modernise Egypt. Since President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi came to power in 2014, official figures show a total of 7,000km (4,350 miles) of roads and some 900 bridges and tunnels have been built across the country, with military contractors carrying out much of the work. The authorities insist that none of the many registered monuments in this old part of Cairo, some dating back to the Arab Conquests in the 7th Century, are being damaged and that due respect is being shown to the most important tombs. "We can't do anything to harm the graves of people we admire or against monumental areas. We build bridges to avoid this," President Sisi has said. "We should not give an opening to those who want to tarnish our efforts." His officials say that the affected gravesites are mostly from the past century and that compensation is being given. However, there has been a public outcry over the loss of valuable architecture and a unique cultural heritage in six historic cemeteries where Egypt's notables have long been buried, often in fancy marble tombs engraved with Arabic calligraphy. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-65697835
