Four women have made complaints to parliamentary authorities about MP Julian Knight since police dropped an investigation into him, the BBC has been told. The fresh complaints are thought to allege inappropriate comments and behaviour. The BBC has also been told five different women raised sexual misconduct allegations about him to the police. Mr Knight, who is MP for Solihull, has strongly denied wrongdoing. The separate reports to police and parliamentary authorities mean nine women in total are alleged to have made some form of misconduct allegation about Mr Knight, ranging from allegations of inappropriate comments to sexual assault. This means allegations of wrongdoing are wider than previously thought. Mr Knight, who was elected to Parliament in 2015, has repeatedly said there was a "single" and "baseless" complaint made against him to the Metropolitan Police. MP Julian Knight to stand down at next election He said police did not interview him before they closed the case, and that he has not been made aware of "any details of allegations supposedly made subsequently against me to any parliamentary authorities". 'Further complaints' A police investigation was launched into the MP in December 2022 after police received allegations of serious sexual assault. Scotland Yard said it had received "allegations in relation to unnamed victims" on 28 October last year, before a further referral relating to the "incident{s}" was made on 7 December. The BBC has now been told five women, in addition to third-party witnesses, had raised sexual misconduct allegations about him to the Metropolitan Police. On 29 March 2023, police dropped their investigation into Mr Knight saying no arrests had been made. The Conservative whips office said at the time it would not restore Mr Knight as a Tory MP following "further complaints". Chief whip Simon Hart said the complaints, if appropriate, "will be referred to the relevant police force, or appropriate bodies". Four women have made misconduct complaints to the parliamentary authorities about Mr Knight, alleging inappropriate comments and behaviour, since the Met dropped their investigation, the BBC has been told. The complaints are unrelated but the BBC understands some of them allege a similar pattern of behaviour, claiming that Mr Knight had reached out to women on social media to offer career support before later making inappropriate comments or approaches. The allegations relate to the period he has sat as an MP, including during his tenure as chairman of the Commons culture committee. After the police dropped their investigation, he accused the whips' office of making a statement about "unspecified further complaints" which he said "tarnished my name and left my family and me in limbo". He also said he had tried to "discover the nature of these allegations so that I could deny them, since I know I am guilty of no wrong-doing". But he added that "no job or political career is worth this". He has stated that he will sit as an independent MP until the next general election but will not stand again and has "no choice" but to relinquish his position as chair of the culture committee. Mr Knight recused himself from parliament while police were investigating him but has since returned. 'Serious concerns' Unions in parliament have raised concerns about the procedures in relation to safeguarding of staff in parliament. Mike Clancy, general secretary of Prospect, said: "Trade unions have been pushing for some time for Parliament to have the ability to exclude MPs from Westminster if serious accusations are made about them. But we are still waiting for concrete action. "The idea that Parliament can simply remain neutral and uninvolved when allegations are made against an MP is outdated, regressive and out of kilter with best practice. "The Conservative Party's refusal to return the whip suggests that they have serious concerns about this individual and if that is the case then transparency is vital for employee safety. He added: "If Parliament has information about potentially serious misbehaviour, what action can it reasonably take to ensure the safety of staff, visitors and other MPs? "The House of Commons Commission launched a consultation on MP exclusion in December last year. "Concern is growing at the lack of action since then. Allegations of MP misconduct do not seem to be going away, Parliament needs to bring forward proposals as quickly as possible." Informal agreement Certain parliamentary figures in charge of discipline - like party whips - do not have the power to stop an MP coming into parliament. They usually rely on informal agreements with MPs accused of misconduct, asking them to stay away while investigations are ongoing. If an MP is investigated by parliament's standards committee, or the Independent Expert Panel (IEP) that was set up to investigate bullying or harassment cases against MPs, they can face a suspension, if these bodies recommend one. For an MP to be investigated by the IEP, a report must be made and upheld about them to parliament's Independent Complaints and Grievance Scheme (ICGS). Police can ban MPs from parliament if they arrest somebody, release them on bail, but make it a bail condition to stay away from that workplace. 'Baseless complaint' In a statement, Julian Knight told the BBC: "As I have repeatedly said, I am fully aware of the circumstances of the single complaint made against me to the Metropolitan Police and the motivations of those involved in making it. "This baseless complaint was dismissed by the police without their even feeling the need to interview me, which they never did. "I have not been made aware of any details of allegations supposedly made subsequently against me to any Parliamentary authorities. 'Nor am I the subject of any investigation by parliament's Independent Complaints and Grievance Scheme. "Should I become the subject of any such investigation, I will fully and publicly defend myself against any allegations. "Meanwhile, it is deplorable that, despite the police decision, I remain the subject of what appears to be a smear campaign conducted through leaks, false innuendo and briefings." https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-65412925

Worms can entangle themselves into a single, giant knot, only to quickly unravel themselves from the tightly wound mess within milliseconds. Now, math shows how they do it. Researchers studied California blackworms (Lumbriculus variegatus) β thin worms that can grow to be 4 inches (10 centimeters) in length β in the lab, watching as the worms intertwined by the thousands. Even though it took the worms minutes to form into a ball-shaped blob akin to a snarled tangle of Christmas lights, they could untangle from the jumble in the blink of an eye when threatened, according to a study published April 28 in the journal Science(opens in new tab). "We wanted to understand the exact mechanics behind how the worms change their movement dynamics to achieve tangling and ultrafast untangling," study co-author Saad Bhamla(opens in new tab), an assistant professor in the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, said in a statement(opens in new tab). "Also, these are not just typical filaments like string, ethernet cables, or spaghetti β these are living, active tangles that are out of equilibrium, which adds a fascinating layer to the question." To provoke an escape response, researchers shined an ultraviolet light on the worm mass, which caused them to "explosively" disperse. But the team still didn't understand the mechanics of what was going on in the center of the ball. So they placed a live worm blob in nontoxic jelly and used an ultrasound machine to observe the phenomenon from the inside. After putting these ultrasonic images together into a movie, the team plotted more than 46,000 data points to understand "the math behind the movements," and created a mathematical model that could help predict each worm's exact escape path, according to the statement. "What's striking is these tangled structures are extremely complicated," lead author Vishal Patil(opens in new tab), a former graduate student at Georgia Tech who is now a postdoctoral fellow in bioengineering at Stanford University, said in the statement. "They are disordered and complex structures, but these living worm structures are able to mani[CENSORED]te these knots for crucial functions." The model predicted that each worm would weave itself with at least two others and they would then use "helical wave motions" β basically, spinning their bodies like corkscrews β when they needed to unravel. Although scientists already knew that worms moved in this manner, the new study shows why they use these swift movements, according to the statement. This study is the first known mathematical theory of active tangling and untangling, and researchers think it could be applied elsewhere. "Imagine a soft, nonwoven material made of millions of stringlike filaments that can tangle and untangle on command, forming a smart adhesive bandage that shape-morphs as a wound heals, or a smart filtration material that alters pore topology to trap particles of different sizes or chemical properties," Bhamla said in the statement. "The possibilities are endless." https://www.livescience.com/animals/watch-thousands-of-worms-explosively-untangle-themselves-from-a-knotted-ball-in-milliseconds

Demand for the near-Β£100,000 Volvo EX90 has exceeded the Swedish firm's "boldest" expectations, it said today. The first production run for the electric SUV, which received its global launch last year, has sold out and the firm said orders surpassed its "most ambitious internal projections". Earlier, Volvo said the car had been taken off sale, but it remains available to order in the UK. Earlier this year, Volvo CEO Jim Rowan told Autocar the EX90 would initially enter production in very small numbers ahead of sales beginning in 2024. He added that the firm's flagship SUV βblew through those targets for pre-ordersβ and that it βtop and tails the rangeβ with the smaller Volvo EX30, which will join it on the production line later this year. This suggests that there will be no model smaller than the crossover, nor any larger than the EX90. The EX90 β serving as a βstatement for where we are and where we're goingβ β is claimed by Rowan to set new standards for safety as Volvo aims for zero crash fatalities in its cars. The new machine is effectively an electric-only equivalent of the current Volvo XC90. It's the third electric Volvo, following the Volvo XC40 Recharge and Volvo C40 Recharge, but the first to sit on a dedicated electric platform β the Geely groupβs advanced SPA2 architecture. It's closely related technically to the Polestar 3 but, unlike that model, features a third row of seats. The EX90's styling is based on the Concept Recharge that was shown in 2021. It retains familiar Volvo design cues, such as the blanked-off front grille seen on the XC40 and the upright rear lights. It has also been honed for aerodynamic efficiency to optimise the range. Volvo claims a drag coefficient of 0.29. It will arrive with a dual-motor, four-wheel-drive powertrain offering two outputs. Twin Motor models will have 402bhp and 568lb ft of torque, while Performance models will have 510bhp and 671lb ft. Both offer a governed top speed of 112mph. Lower-powered single-motor versions are likely to follow. Power will come from a 111kWh battery (107kWh usable), with an efficiency of 2.9 miles per kWh and a claimed range of 364 miles for the Twin Motor and 360 miles for the Performance. The battery can be charged at rates of up to 250kW, offering a 10-80% charge in 30 minutes. At 5037mm, the EX90 is slightly longer than the current XC90. Itβs also wider than that car but slightly lower and has a kerb weight of 2818kg. Thereβs a 310-litre boot when seven seats are in use, which rises to 665 litres in five-seat mode and 1915 litres with both rows folded. At launch, the EX90 will sit on 22in alloy wheels, with air suspension standard. A major focus of the EX90 has been on the safety features, software and hardware that underpins the machine. Most notably, it will feature lidar as standard (this will be an option on the Polestar 3), with the sensor mounted on the front edge of the roof. That will complement a range of other interior and exterior sensors and cameras to power advanced driver assistance and safety systems. Initially, that will include an upgraded Pilot Assist system, and a steering support function that will help changing lanes. Volvo says the systems will eventually it to offer an over-the-air subscription update that will offer βunsupervised autonomous drivingβ in certain conditions and places. The interior sensors can gauge eye concentration to warn about driving while distracted or drowsy. The new safety kit, along with the EX90βs infotainment and battery management systems, will be powered by a core software system that uses advanced Nvidia Drive platforms along with Qualcommβs Snapdragon Cockpit platform mixed with in-house Volvo software. The interior dashboard is built around a 14.5in central touchscreen that features Volvoβs Google-based infotainment. The model features a 5G data connection as standard to aid with over-the-air software updates. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-volvo-ex90-orders-exceed-ambitious-expectations

Jerry Springer, the TV presenter best known for his raucous talk shows, has died aged 79. The Jerry Springer Show, which ran for nearly three decades from 1991, brought fights, flying chairs, and the fringes of US society to a global audience. Springer died peacefully on Thursday at his home in Chicago, his publicists confirmed to BBC News. Jene Galvin, a friend of Springer's and spokesman for the family, described him as "irreplaceable". "Jerry's ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried whether that was politics, broadcasting or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word," he said. "He's irreplaceable and his loss hurts immensely, but memories of his intellect, heart and humour will live on." Springer's chat show became a symbol of low-brow television over the course of almost 5,000 episodes with its chaotic confrontation, swearing and infidelity revelations. Fellow chat show host Ricki Lake led the tributes on social media, writing: "Just waking to the very sad news of the passing of my longtime talk show rival and friend Jerry Springer. A lovely man. May he rest in peace." Broadcaster Piers Morgan described Springer as a "TV icon and such an intelligent, warm, funny man". "Loved working with him on AGT [America's Got Talent], loved hanging out with him (we lived in same hotel for two years), loved arguing with him (he loved his politics), loved everything about him," he added. Springer was born in the London Underground station of Highgate in 1944 in World War Two. His parents, who were Jewish refugees from a region of Germany which is now part of Poland, were in the station sheltering from a German bombing raid at the time. Springer moved to Queens, New York, aged four, along with his parents and older sister. He started his professional life working in politics, having studied both political science and law at university. He was an advisor to Robert F Kennedy, and served as mayor of Cincinnati from 1977-78, but after a failed bid to become governor of Ohio he switched to a career in TV journalism. He became a reporter at a local TV station and worked his way up to being an anchor. Launched in 1991, The Jerry Springer Show began life as an ordinary talk show focusing on social issues and US politics, led by the-then mild mannered Springer. But in an effort to boost ratings, Springer switched things up dramatically after a few years, focusing on salacious and outrageous content. Springer repeatedly defended his show against accusations it was too low-brow. He told the BBC in 2014: "You could decide only to put well-scrubbed, wealthy people who speak the Queen's English on television and just do that but that wouldn't reflect the whole society." "If all shows were like mine, that would be wrong. But you can't just have television that is like Friends, Seinfeld, all these wealthy people, good looking people and you love it," he added. "If some wealthy, famous person goes on television and talks about who he or she has been sleeping with, we can't get enough of it. We cheer them. But if it's some person of low income, all of a sudden we say trash." On-air fistfights, fetishes and raucous crowds In most episodes, guests came to talk about family problems and expose adultery and other transgressions. Springer would supposedly try to mediate but the encounters often ended up in fist-fights, with guests being held back by security guards. The audience would regularly chant "Jerry! Jerry!" when tensions became heightened during the episodes. On his Twitter profile, Springer jokingly declared himself as "talk show host, ringmaster of civilisation's end". Springer called his programme "escapist entertainment", but others saw the show as contributing to a dumbing-down of television and a decline in social values. He often jokingly told people he met that his wish for them was: "May you never be on my show." In the late 1990s the show topped the daytime television ratings in the US, beating even Oprah. It ended its run in 2018 after viewing figures declined. In 2003, a musical based on the chaotic TV series was launched. Jerry Springer: The Opera ran for 609 performances in London from April 2003 to February 2005 before touring the UK in 2006. It won four Olivier awards including best new musical. In January 2005, its UK television broadcast on BBC Two attracted 55,000 complaints. Jerry Springer: The Opera provoked accusations of blasphemy and protests from religious campaigners. But broadcast regulator Ofcom said it did not breach its guidelines. From 2007 to 2008, Springer hosted America's Got Talent, and in recent years he fronted the courtroom show Judge Jerry. In June 2009, Springer made his stage debut as Billy Flynn in Chicago at the Cambridge Theatre, London. Springer also appeared on the BBC's Who Do You Think You Are? programme, tracing his family through the Holocaust to the small town of Neustettin, which is now in Poland. https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-65415348

What are the best games on Apple Arcade in 2022? The idea of a subscription-based service for games is a smart one, and Apple Arcade delivers enormous value for money with its service, especially in India. At Rs. 99 per month, Apple Arcade has a huge catalogue of games and continues to add new ones, giving users a chance to play premium games without any in-app purchases. The catalogue covers a wide range of genres, including sports, racing, role-playing, and adventure, to name a few. There are also a number of established franchises and classic games redesigned and optimised for the Apple Arcade experience. Apple Arcade works on various supported Apple devices, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV. I've put together a list of the best Apple Arcade games that I've played since the service launched, and here are my top picks, in no particular order. Alto's Odyssey - Remastered The sequel to the excellent Alto's Adventure, Alto's Odyssey Remastered brings the excellent mechanics, world design and artistic gameplay of its predecessor back in style. A typical endless runner game, Alto's Odyssey has been optimised for Apple Arcade, and has interesting objectives that increase in difficulty as you keep playing, along with an uplifting soundtrack, along with a new, exclusive βLost City' biome for the platform. Apple Arcadeβs βTimeless Classicsβ Category Gives Old Games Fresh Appeal Another big change is the setting, switching from snowy mountainous slopes to a much larger world spanning sandy desert terrain, ancient ruins, and climbable rock faces. Central characters Alto and his friends also return with all of their abilities. Notably, Alto's Adventure is also now available on Apple Arcade in a Remastered version, in case you prefer the original setting and gameplay. https://www.gadgets360.com/games/guide/best-apple-arcade-games-2022-iphone-mac-tv-ipad-ios-mobile-2917172

Introduction Meet one of the best smartphones in the world, which also happens to be one of the hardest ones to buy - the Oppo Find X6 Pro. The next generation Find flagship introduces an exquisite design, the most premium OLED panel, the fastest available chip, 100W fast charging, and a trio of premium 50MP cameras with the largest of sensors and with Hasselblad Color Calibration. The caveat is it's only available in China. The Oppo Find X6 Pro is the ultimate smartphone package, going by its specs at least. The phone's design is a combination of Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and Gorilla Glass 5 or eco leather, there is a metal frame and special metal ring around the camera island. Oh, and the whole thing is IP68-rated for dust and water resistance. The 6.82-inch OLED screen uses a 1440p LTPO3 panel of 120Hz dynamic refresh rate, 10-bit color depth, and Dolby Vision support. This screen is capable of 1,500 nits of maximum and up to 2,500 nits of peak brightness. This latest generation LTPO should allow for flexible refresh rate adaptiveness and reduce the strain on the battery life. The Find X6 Pro is powered by the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, and there is a lot of RAM and UFS 4.0 storage, too. The phone also comes with a large 5,000 mAh battery and seriously fast wired (100W) and wireless (50W) charging support. But nowadays, the cameras are usually the most intriguing aspect of a high-end smartphone, and that's also the case with the Find X6 Pro. There are three 50MP cameras on its back - a 1.0" primary, one of the very few on the market. The ultrawide and the telephoto cameras rely on large 1/1.56" sensors. Oppo says its periscope tele lens has the best stabilization on the market, too. There is a lot more to talk about, so let's quickly scroll through the specs and get down to business. Oppo Find X6 Pro specs at a glance: Body: 164.8x76.2x9.1mm, 216g; Glass front (Gorilla Glass Victus 2), glass back (Gorilla Glass 5) or eco-leather back, aluminum frame; IP68 dust/water resistant (up to 1.5m for 30 min). Display: 6.82" LTPO3 AMOLED, 1B colors, 120Hz, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, 800 nits (typ), 1500 nits (HBM), 2500 nits (peak), 1440x3168px resolution, 19.8:9 aspect ratio, 510ppi. Chipset: Qualcomm SM8550-AC Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (4 nm): Octa-core (1x3.2 GHz Cortex-X3 & 2x2.8 GHz Cortex-A715 & 2x2.8 GHz Cortex-A710 & 3x2.0 GHz Cortex-A510); Adreno 740. Memory: 256GB 12GB RAM, 256GB 16GB RAM, 512GB 16GB RAM; UFS 4.0. OS/Software: Android 13, ColorOS 13.1. Rear camera: Wide (main): 50 MP, f/1.8, 23mm, 1.0"-type, 1.6Β΅m, multi-directional PDAF, Laser AF, OIS; Telephoto: 50 MP, f/2.6, 65mm, 1/1.56", 1.0Β΅m, 2.8x optical zoom, multi-directional PDAF, OIS; Ultra wide angle: 50 MP, f/2.2, 15mm, 110Λ, 1/1.56", 1.0Β΅m, multi-directional PDAF, OIS. Front camera: 32 MP, f/2.4, 21mm (wide), 1/2.74", 0.8Β΅m, PDAF. Video capture: Rear camera: 4K@30/60fps, 1080p@30/60/240fps; gyro-EIS; HDR, 10βbit video, Dolby Vision; Front camera: 1080p@30fps, gyro-EIS. Battery: 5000mAh; 100W wired, PD, 45% in 10 min, 100% in 30 min (advertised), 50W wireless, 50% in 22 min, 100% in 51 min (advertised), 10W reverse wireless. Misc: Fingerprint reader (under display, optical); Infrared port; stereo speakers. Well, the only thing that's not as flagship-grade is the selfie camera. An average 32MP front camera that's limited to 1080p video capturing seems out of place on this device. Unboxing the Oppo Find X6 Pro The Find X6 Pro ships inside a black paper box, which contains a 100W SuperVOOC charger and a USB-A-to-C 10A-rated cable. But that's not all. The bundle also contains a case that copies the phone's back - it has the same split design with a top gray part and a bottom one made of brown eco-leather. The case's top part is made of plastic (the phone's is glass), but we still appreciate these extra steps, and we are glad that many users will get to keep the iconic design even when they are using a case. By the way, the Black and Green models, which have all-glass rear panels, also come with matching black/green plastic cases with the same matt finish. https://www.gsmarena.com/oppo_find_x6_pro-review-2551.php

The series would go on hiatus after the spit between EA and Tiger, only for EA to enter the arena in 2015 with Rory Mcllroy PGA Tour, a visually stunning title that lacked depth and authenticity. EA pulled out of the golf gaming arena for eight years but made huge news last year by stating it was ready to continue its PGA series with the release of EA Sports PGA Tour. https://www.operationsports.com/sports-gaming-news-weekly-wrap-up-4-16/

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is being investigated by Parliament's standards watchdog over a possible failure to declare an interest. Mr Sunak is being investigated over whether a declaration of interest was "open and frank", under rules set out by the commissioner for standards. The BBC understands the probe relates to a childcare firm his wife has shares in. The commissioner decides whether an MP has broken rules after an inquiry. A Downing Street spokesperson said: "We are happy to assist the commissioner to clarify how this has been transparently declared as a ministerial interest." Sunak's wife holds shares in childcare firm given Budget boost Last month, Mr Sunak faced questions over shares his wife, Akshata Murty, holds in Koru Kids, a childcare agency that could benefit from a new policy unveiled in the spring Budget. Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced a pilot of payments for new childminders, with more for those who sign up through agencies. Ms Murty was listed as a shareholder in one of those agencies, Koru Kids, as recently as 6 March. Mr Sunak did not mention Ms Murty's links to Koru Kids when he was questioned by MPs over the childcare policy at a parliamentary committee hearing on 28 March. Labour MP Catherine McKinnell asked Mr Sunak whether he had any interest to declare, and in reply he said: "No, all my disclosures are declared in the normal way." In a letter to the committee, sent a few days after the hearing, Mr Sunak said his wife's interest was declared to the Cabinet Office and that an updated statement of ministers' interests would be due out shortly. In his letter, Mr Sunak said the the list of ministerial interests "ensures steps are taken to avoid or mitigate any potential conflict of interest". The list of ministerial interests is separate to the register of interests for MPs, which says members "must always consider whether they have a conflict of interest". The list has not been updated for nearly a year and was last compiled by Lord Geidt, who resigned as Boris Johnson's ethics adviser. The prime minister's spokesman said that the commissioner was investigating whether Mr Sunak was not clear that he had dual obligations to declare the connection as a ministerial interest and also to declare it when speaking to MPs about the issue. "The prime minister has set out in his response to the Liaison Committee that he is confident the appropriate process has been followed to avoid or mitigate any potential conflict of interest, and that the interest of ministers' spouses or partners is not something that would influence their actions either as ministers or as members of parliament," he said. Labour's deputy leader Angela Rayner MP said the failure to update the rules or publish the register of ministers' interests had "left a transparency black hole which is enabling the prime minister and those he has appointed to dodge proper scrutiny of their affairs". She added: "If Rishi Sunak has got nothing to hide, he should commit to publishing the register before May's elections so the public can see for themselves." The Liberal Democrats said the investigation was another example of a Conservative prime minister allegedly "bending the rules". "After months of Conservative sleaze and scandal, the public just want a government which is focused on the country, rather than saving their own skin," Liberal Democrat chief whip Wendy Chamberlain said. Code of conduct An update on the commissioner's website says Mr Sunak is being investigated under paragraph 6 of the code of conduct for MPs. The paragraph reads: "Members must always be open and frank in declaring any relevant interest in any proceeding of the House or its committees, and in any communications with ministers, members, public officials or public office holders." The commissioner for standards is an independent officer who investigates allegations that MPs have breached Parliament's code of conduct. Following investigation, if the watchdog thinks the allegation represents a breach of the code, they can put such cases before MPs sitting on the Committee on Standards, who can decide any sanctions. Breaching the rules on standards can lead to serious consequences for some MPs, including suspension from the House of Commons. There are many of these investigations every year but most end with a minor telling off from the commissioner. Mr Johnson has been a serial offender when it comes to the late declaration of earnings and Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer had to apologise for something similar last year. The rules are there for a reason though and it is all about transparency. MPs have a duty to be open about their financial affairs so colleagues and the public can assess whether there is any conflict of interest. The whole system is undermined if MPs fail to follow the rules for whatever reason and most would expect a prime minister to be particularly careful about the paperwork. The rules around lobbying in Parliament were tightened up in an updated version of the code of conduct, which was published in February following the controversy over paid advocacy work undertaken by former MP Owen Paterson. New incentives The pilot of bonuses for childminders was announced in the Budget on 15 March as part of the government's overhaul of childcare. Mr Hunt said the government would be "piloting incentive payments of Β£600 for childminders who sign up to the profession, rising to Β£1,200 for those who join through an agency". The pilot could drive up the number of childminders entering the profession and generate more business for companies such as Koru Kids. Koru Kids is listed as one of six childminder agencies on the government's website. On its website, Koru Kids welcomed the government's reforms and said "the new incentives open to childminders are great". The website says new childminders would get a bonus of Β£1,200 if they "come through an agency like Koru Kids who offer community, training and ongoing support". https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-65301099

Brown widow spiders, which are invasive to North America, are wiping out black widow po[CENSORED]tions in the U.S. by aggressively attacking them for no clear reason, a new study shows. Black widow spiders in the U.S. are being killed off by an unexpected rival: their invasive relatives, but the motivation behind the highly aggressive attacks is not yet clear, a new study finds. The perpetrators, brown widow spiders (Latrodectus geometricus), likely originated in Africa or South America but have since spread to every continent on Earth apart from Antarctica. Brown widows are from the same genus as black widows, of which there are five species, including three that are native to North America: southern black widows (Latrodectus mactans), western black widows (Latrodectus hesperus) and northern black widows (Latrodectus variolus). But unlike black widows, which can all inflict extremely painful and occasionally lethal bites on humans, brown widow bites rarely cause significant harm to people, likely because they inject less venom into their bites despite having venom that is "drop-for-drop" just as toxic, according to the Center for Invasive Species Research (CISR)(opens in new tab) at the University of California, Riverside. In the U.S., brown widow spiders were first spotted in 1935 in Florida, and have subsequently spread across the southern states and into California, according to CISR. Since the invasive species was introduced, southern and western black widow numbers have plummeted, particularly in Florida, where southern black widows have gone "locally extinct" in certain areas. However, scientists are unsure exactly why this is happening: Other spider species have not been affected by the brown widow's arrival, and there does not appear to be any competition for resources that would force the two widow species to fight one another. In a new study, published Monday (March 13) in the journal Annals of the Entomological Society of America(opens in new tab), researchers put solitary brown widows into laboratory tanks with one of three individuals from another spider species β a southern black widow, a red house spider (Nesticodes rufipes) or a triangulate cobweb spider (Steatoda triangulosa), which all overlap with brown widows in the wild β to see how the brown widow reacted to cohabiting with each of the species. When paired with the non-widow spiders, the brown widows peacefully cohabited with their tankmates in 50% to 80% of the tests. The rest of the time, one spider would kill and eat the other, but there was little difference between which species would end up victorious. But when adult brown widows were paired with adult black widows, the invasive species killed and consumed the black widows 40% of the time, the pair peacefully cohabitated together 30% of the time, and in the remaining trials the black widows ended up victorious β but only after defending themselves from an initial brown widow attack. However, when sub-adult individuals of both species were mixed, the brown widows killed and ate their counterparts 80% of the time. Overall, brown widows were six times more likely to kill black widows than the other two spider species. In separate experiments, the team also showed that brown widows produce more offspring than black widows and that those offspring begin to reach maturity faster than black widows. This could explain why sub-adult individuals were so adept at killing younger black widows, which in turn would explain why black widow po[CENSORED]tions are collapsing in areas where brown widows have invaded, the researchers wrote. However, the researchers were surprised at the stark behavioral differences between brown and black widows. "Brown widows are boldly aggressive and will immediately investigate a neighbor and attack if there is no resistance from the neighbor," study co-author Deby Cassill(opens in new tab), an ecologist at the University of South Florida (USF), said in a statement(opens in new tab). "But the black widows are extremely shy, counterattacking only to defend themselves against an aggressive spider." The researchers are unsure why the closely related species react so differently to one another and plan to study brown and black widows in other parts of the world, such as Africa, to see if the same trends apply. "I would love to see if their [brown widows'] behavior and displacement of black widows is something that they have adapted here in North America, or if this behavior is something they exhibit naturally even in areas where they have coevolved with black widows for much longer periods of time," study lead author Louis Coticchio(opens in new tab), a doctoral student of conservation biology at USF, said in the statement. https://www.livescience.com/black-widows-are-being-slaughtered-by-their-brown-widow-cousins-and-we-dont-know-why

Volkswagen's answer to the indomitable Tesla Model 3 is finally official: the ID 7 is a large, sleek saloon which goes big on luxury appeal in a bid to bolster Wolfsburg's share of the crucial executive EV market. Claimed to have been designed "for long distances", the Volkswagen ID 7 touts a claimed range of up to 435 miles (beating its Californian rival) in range-topping Pro S guise, which comes with a new 86kW battery pack not yet used by any Volkswagen EV. As well as being VW's longest-range EV, the ID 7 Pro S will also be its fastest-charging, capable of topping up at speeds of 200kW. A smaller 77kWh battery β familiar from the ID 3, ID 4, ID 5 and ID Buzz β will be offered in the ID 7 Pro, claiming a range of 382 miles and capable of charging at up to 170kW. From launch, both variants are single-motor, rear-wheel-drive propositions - using a newly developed motor and single-speed gearbox claimed to boost efficiency and power delivery compared to the firm's current EVs. It's a substantially more potent unit than used by any RWD Volkswagen EV so far, bringing 282bhp and 402lb ft to give a 0-62mph time of around 6.0secs in the quickest variant. An even faster, twin-motor GTX version will be launched later, which means the ID 7's powertrain line-up will ultimately mirror that of its Polestar 2, Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai Ioniq 6 rivals. Autocar understands this 4WD range-topper will pair the 282bhp rear motor with the ID 4 GTX's 107bhp front motor for a combined output in the region of 390bhp. Measuring nearly five metres long and with a wheelbase of around three metres, the ID 7 is larger than the Volkswagen Passat to which it serves as an indirect electric alternative - and is, in fact, closer in size to the Phaeton luxury saloon which bowed out in 2016. The cabin majors on practicality but various touches ramp up the ID 7's luxury credentials, including a panoramic roof that switches from opaque to transparent at the touch of a button, optional massage seats, an augmented reality head-up display and a 15.0in infotainment touchscreen running a heavily overhauled iteration of Volkswagen's MIB software platform. Volkswagen is keen to emphasise the focus it has placed on making this new infotainment platform β shared with the facelift ID 3 β easy to use. There is a new direct-access bar at the top of the touchscreen for quick access to core functions, for example, the main menu can be opened without closing any in-use app, the Home Screen can be configured to show icons for a driver's most commonly used apps and the main climate controls are now permanently hosted at the bottom of the screen to avoid scrolling on the move. Perhaps most importantly, the controversial touch sliders for the temperature and volume controls are now illuminated, meaning they can be used safely at night. The ID 7 will launch in Europe and China in autumn of this year, followed by the US in 2024. UK prices have not been confirmed, but the company has suggested a start price in the region of Β£50,000, which would stack the ID 7 up neatly against rivals https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/volkswagen-id-7-goes-official-282bhp-and-435-mile-range

The EU's ambassador in Sudan, Aidan O'Hara, has been assaulted at his home in Khartoum, which is gripped by deadly fighting between rival forces. The Irish diplomat was not "seriously hurt", Irish Foreign Minister MicheΓ‘l Martin has confirmed. Mr Martin described the attack as a "gross violation of obligations to protect diplomats". Around 185 people have been killed and more than 1,800 injured in three days of fighting, according to the UN. The city has seen air strikes, shelling and heavy small-arms fire. Both the army and a paramilitary group called the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) claim to control key sites in Khartoum, where residents have been sheltering from explosions. Mr Martin described the ambassador as an "outstanding Irish and European diplomat who is serving the EU under the most difficult circumstances". "We thank him for his service and call for an urgent cessation of violence in Sudan, and resumption of dialogue," he said. Earlier, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell tweeted that the security of diplomatic premises and staff was a "primary responsibility" of the Sudanese authorities. EU spokeswoman Nabila Massrali told AFP news agency the EU delegation had not been evacuated from Khartoum following the attack. Staff security was the priority and security measures were being assessed, she added. Sudan: The basics Sudan is in north-east Africa and has a history of instability: It fell under military rule in 2019, when long-time leader Omar al-Bashir was toppled Since then, two men have been in charge: The head of the army and his deputy, who is also the head of a paramilitary group called the RSF They disagree on how to restore civilian rule to Sudan: The RSF leader claims to represent marginalised groups against the country's elites but his forces were accused of ethnic cleansing US state department spokesman John Kirby said there were currently no plans to evacuate US personnel, despite ongoing security concerns and the closure of Khartoum's airport. But he urged all Americans to treat the situation "with the utmost seriousness". The conflict has forced many civilians to shelter in their homes amid fears of a prolonged conflict that could land the country in deeper chaos. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-65306695
