  3. If you heard rumors that Google was working on not one but two foldable smartphones in the past few months (and years), it turns out those mumblings were actually true, despite the fact that the company only eventually announced one of them, namely the Pixel Fold. Apparently there was a second foldable smartphone created by the same team that was in charge of the Pixel Fold. This other device apparently "wasn't good enough" which is why it was eventually canceled and never made it to market. The team felt like it should only launch devices that are good enough or better than what is out there already. Unfortunately, this confession of sorts, recorded as part of Google's official Made by Google podcast, does not contain any more details about this device. So we don't know if it had the exact same form factor as the Pixel Fold, or if, perhaps, it went the 'flip' route instead. We may never know, but the point is that the search giant's development team considered the Pixel Fold the better device of the two, and that's why it lived and the other one didn't. https://www.gsmarena.com/google_developed_a_second_foldable_alongside_the_pixel_fold_but_canceled_it-news-58710.php

The physics will also be improved with more customizable parameters and greater accuracy, while the player’s rivals will be managed by an artificial intelligence that will feature different levels of antagonism, making them more or less aggressive when overtaking. Making a new-gen only game gave us the possibility of offering all these features at the same time, even with 20 opponents on the track. RIDE 5 allows to ride on real or original circuits and roads, to develop your own bikes, to change their livery (using your own or those created by other users, thanks to the in-game Editor) and to customize the rider. And above all, RIDE 5 gives you the possibility to ride motorcycles that are not the ones you see in the world championship – prerogative of a small handful of super riders – on the contrary, you can ride the bikes you see at the dealer, the ones you’ve always dreamt of buying or that, maybe, you already own. RIDE 5 is scheduled to release for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam and Epic on August 24. https://www.operationsports.com/ride-5-gameplay-trailer-revealed-with-producer-blog/
  6. The government is discussing plans for supermarkets to introduce a cap on the price of basic food items to help tackle the rising cost of living. A voluntary agreement with major retailers could see price reductions on basic food items like bread and milk. Food prices rose by 19.1% in the year to April - its second highest rate in 45 years. Downing Street sources have stressed that there are no plans for a mandatory price cap. The idea of a cap or freeze on basic food items, as first reported by the Daily Telegraph, is said to be at the "drawing board stage". Supermarkets are expected to be allowed to select which items they would cap and only take part in the initiative, modelled on a similar agreement in France, on a voluntary basis. Health Secretary Steve Barclay told BBC One's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme that "this is about having constructive discussions with supermarkets about how we work together, not about any element of compulsion". He added that the government was also keen to protect "suppliers who themselves face considerable pressures". For Labour, shadow work and pensions secretary Jonathan Ashworth told the same programme that the reports were "extraordinary", saying "Rishi Sunak is now like a latter day Edward Heath with price controls". Why food bills aren't shrinking - five things to know Food prices 'worryingly high' as sugar and milk soar Some supermarket food prices 'should fall' soon However there is some doubt over what impact a price cap of food will have. The British Retail Consortium says that the government should focus more on cutting red tape rather than "recreating 1970s-style price controls". "This will not make a jot of difference to prices. High food prices are a direct result of the soaring cost of energy, transport, and labour, as well as higher prices paid to food manufacturers and farmers," says Andrew Opie, director of food and sustainability at the BRC."As commodity prices drop, many of the costs keeping inflation high are now arising from the muddle of new regulation coming from government. Rather than recreating 1970s-style price controls, the government should focus on cutting red tape so that resources can be directed to keeping prices as low as possible." Earlier this week the boss of the Sainsbury's denied that his supermarket had been profiteering. Simon Roberts said his business was "absolutely not" putting prices up to bolster profits - known as "greedflation". He told the BBC that Sainsbury's and other grocery chains had spent money to "battle inflation" and avoid passing all of the rising costs onto consumers. The competition watchdog, the Competition and Markets Authority, has said it will look at how the grocery market is operating. At a meeting with food manufacturers last week the chancellor Jeremy Hunt stressed widespread concern about prices and agreed to engage with the industry on possible measures to ease pressure on household budgets. Mr Hunt has said he would back an increase in interest rates if it curbed higher prices and soaring inflation - even if that risked plunging the UK into recession. "Businesses don't have a price cap like consumers do and yet some smaller businesses buy energy like consumers do so it's been really hard for them to keep going," Shevaun Haviland, director general of the British Chamber of Commerce, told the same programme. The rate of inflation can be calculated in various ways, but the main measure is the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) - which tracks the prices of everyday items in an imaginary "basket of goods". The last figure for CPI was 8.7% in the year to April, down from 10.1% in March and 11.1% in October. Soaring prices of some food products has meant inflation has not come down by as much as many predicted. Experts have warned that expensive food is set to overtake energy bills as the "epicentre" of the cost-of-living crisis. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-65736944
  7. It is only the seventh case of the deadly disease reported in the U.S. since it first emerged in the country in 2003. A rare case of mad cow disease, also known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), has been detected at a slaughter plant in South Carolina but poses no threat to humans or other cattle. It is only the seventh confirmed case of the extremely deadly disease ever recorded in the U.S. Officials from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced the discovery in a statement released May 19. A 5-year-old beef cow belonging to a herd from Tennessee tested positive for BSE after being deemed unfit for slaughter and undergoing routine testing. "This animal never entered slaughter channels and at no time presented a risk to the food supply or to human health in the United States," USDA representatives wrote in the statement. An investigation into the exact cause of the infection is ongoing, but it is likely an isolated case, they added. BSE is a progressive neurological disorder of cattle caused by proteins called prions; prions are found on the surface of cells, but in diseases like mad cow, these proteins fold abnormally and can cause other, healthy prions to do the same. In BSE, the prions affect proteins in the brain and central nervous system, causing a range of symptoms, including behavioral changes, coordination problems, weight loss, decreased milk production and eventually, death, according to the USDA. There are two forms of BSE: classical BSE, which develops when a cow ingests infected material, such as meat or bone meal, made from an infected cow in their feed; and atypical BSE, which develops spontaneously in older cattle. The recently diagnosed cow had atypical BSE, which poses less of a concern for animal welfare officials. Atypical vs. classical BSE Both classical and atypical BSE are caused by prions, but each of the two forms has a unique prion structure and is triggered in different ways. Classical BSE was first discovered in 1986 in the U.K.. The BSE outbreak peaked there in January 1993, when cases spiked to around 1,000 a week, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Scientists eventually discovered that the prions were being transmitted through the cows' feed, which contained infected brain and spinal tissues left over from the butchering of the animals. In 1997, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned the use of use of ruminant β€” a group of hoofed, herbivorous grazing mammals that includes cattle, bison, goats, sheep and deer β€” protein in feed for other ruminants, and it later prohibited the use of certain high-risk cattle tissues in feed for all animals, according to the USDA. Atypical BSE appears to sometimes form spontaneously in cattle that are normally older than 8 years, which makes the disease's emergence in a 5-year-old cow unusual. It is currently unclear what triggers atypical BSE. It can take three to six years for the symptoms of either BSE form to appear after infection, and there is currently no cure or vaccine for the disease, according to USDA. Can humans get mad cow disease? Humans cannot get BSE directly, but they can develop a similar and equally deadly type of prion disease known as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) by eating food products made from infected cattle. vCJD causes symptoms similar to BSE and also results in death. However, it is extremely rare. As of 2019, only 232 people worldwide have ever been diagnosed with vCJD, according to the FDA. In an unusual case, a lab technician in France died in June 2019 from vCJD after accidentally injecting herself with BSE prions through her protective equipment as she was studying the disease in 2010. The World Organisation for Animal Health recognizes the U.S. as having negligible risk for BSE, and this new case will not change that, USDA representatives wrote. https://www.livescience.com/animals/land-mammals/extremely-rare-case-of-mad-cow-disease-detected-in-the-us
  8. For the classy customer who wanted unbeatable style, outstanding performance and a generous helping of that famous American V8 grunt, the Jensen Interceptor was a very welcome addition to a vast array of grand tourers when it arrived in 1966. There was also a slightly longer and pricier version, the FF, which had the double distinction of being the first production car equipped with four-wheel drive (instead of the standard rear-wheel drive) and an anti-lock braking system. With a 6.3-litre big-block Chrysler engine giving it more than 250bhp and a top speed of nearly 140mph, Jensen’s Interceptor must have seemed as fast and modern as the RAF’s own interceptor, the BAC Lightning, when blasting past breathless little Morris 1100s and Ford Anglias on the motorway. Throttle response was lazy and the three-speed automatic gearbox was never in a hurry, but none of that really mattered, because you could nevertheless always rely on its strong punch for a quick getaway or an effortless overtake. Surprisingly for such a large and heavy car, the Interceptor was equally as competent around corners as it was in straight lines, especially so in 4WD FF form. This dynamism was mostly thanks to the Interceptor’s extra-rigid all-steel body and, from 1968, its power steering. Its pliant suspension and plush leather seats made long journeys a dream – provided that your wallet filled up as quickly as the fuel tank emptied. Indeed, the Interceptor’s body came from Carrozzeria Touring, and its interior wouldn’t have felt out of place in the famous Italian design house’s usual Aston Martin or Alfa Romeo creations, either. Almost every facet was adorned with varnished wood or luxurious leather, cradling the driver and up to three passenger in fine comfort. Air conditioning was available and, even more importantly, so were lighters for your next rothmans. The Interceptor was given a mild facelift in 1969 (gaining a bulkier dashboard) and then a more comprehensive one in 1971, when engine displacement was increased to 7.2 litres. This yielded marginal improvements to power output and top speed, although the real advance was in torque. As the 1960s faded into the 1970s and the economy started to tank, worsened by the oil crisis of 1973, the po[CENSORED]rity of the Interceptor understandably declined, and this combined with the troubled launch of the vital new Jensen-Healey roadster resulted in Jensen entering liquidation. However, this doesn’t change the fact that the Interceptor was a groundbreaking piece of engineering, especially so in FF form. It was a car that showed what the British car industry could be: an innovative powerhouse with the ability to compete with the world’s best. No wonder there have been several efforts over the years to revive it in various ways - and why it’s now a highly desirable classic surrounded by a good support network. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/used-cars-used-car-buying-guides/used-car-buying-guide-jensen-interceptor
  9. Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says captain Harry Maguire has a decision to make on his future at the club. The 30-year-old England defender made only 16 appearances in the Premier League for United this season. Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane have been Ten Hag's preferred centre-back pairing in his first season in charge at Old Trafford. "No-one would be happy with this situation," Ten Hag told The Times. "He is not as well. He trains always on best levels, so with 100% effort. "So he handles that situation well and he's in that manner and in his captaincy he's important for the squad." Maguire has made some costly errors this season, most recently in last month's 3-0 Europa League defeat by Sevilla. Ten Hag added: "He has high competition there [at centre-back] with Raphael Varane, who's fantastic. "Let's say I'm happy he's here and when we needed him he did his job. But it's also a decision he has to make." Maguire arrived at United in 2019 from Leicester for Β£80m, a world-record fee for a defender, and his contract runs until 2025. He played in all five of England's World Cup games in 2022 and has been selected for the upcoming Euro qualifiers, but manager Gareth Southgate has said he is concerned by his lack of playing time at United. While Ten Hag did not confirm whether Maguire would be a United player next season, the former Ajax boss said that goalkeeper David de Gea would be staying for the 2023-24 campaign. De Gea has been the club's first-choice keeper this season and won the Golden Glove award for the most clean sheets in the Premier League. Asked if the 32-year-old would still be at Old Trafford next season, Ten Hag replied: "Yes, but I will not say he will always be my number one because in a club like United there must be competition in all positions." United play Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley on Sunday with the hope of denying their city rivals' bid to match the Treble won by Sir Alex Ferguson's team in 1999. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/65749368
  10. The new president of Africa's largest democracy, Nigeria, has used his inaugural address to make a major policy announcement to ease pressure on government finances. Bola Tinubu said the decades-long subsidy on petroleum products was being scrapped. "Fuel subsidy is gone," he told a packed crowd in the capital, Abuja. He won disputed elections with a promise to renew hope - but he faces tough economic and security challenges. It is not clear when the new policy will kick in, but ending the subsidy will lead to a rise in the price of petrol and could have a knock on effect on other prices. Previous Nigerian governments have tried and failed to end the subsidy that was first introduced in the 1970s. Despite its oil wealth, Nigeria is unable to refine enough crude to meet local demands so it imports petroleum products, which are then sold at a government-set price. But the subsidy is a huge drain on public finances. Last year it gulped 4.3trn naira ($9.3bn; Β£7.5bn) and for the first half of this year, 3.36trn naira was budgeted for it. The new president said the subsidy could no longer be justified and that the funds would instead be spent on public infrastructure and to improve the lives of people. Mr Tinubu, 71, takes over from Muhammadu Buhari, who has stepped down at the end of his two terms. He is under pressure to tackle the economic crisis. Inflation is running at its highest rate for nearly 18 years, one in three people are unemployed and the output of the vital oil industry is shrinking. Mr Tinubu acknowledged these challenges in his speech, saying his team would release its economic roadmap in the coming weeks but pointed out that interest rates were too high. The five tests awaiting Nigeria's new president He won the election in February with 37% of the vote. His main rival Atiku Abubakar polled 29%, and Labour's Peter Obi 25%. Mr Tinubu's victory is being challenged in court by the two opposition candidates. They say the outcome was mani[CENSORED]ted. But Mr Tinubu said he was "spreading his hand across the political divide", and described the election as hard-fought and of a better quality than previous ones. He also said that women and young people would feature prominently in his administration and hinted at employing more security personnel to tackle the security crisis, which includes kidnappings for ransom. As a former governor of Lagos, he revitalised Nigeria's commercial hub - no easy job - and his allies say he will take the same technocratic and thoughtful approach to running the vast country of more than 200 million people. But opponents of the new president say he has lost the vitality he used to forcefully modernise Lagos. Since the election he has travelled abroad twice, raising questions about his health. In 2021 he spent months in London being treated for an undisclosed illness. He has brushed off the criticism, saying the job does not require the fitness of an Olympic athlete - and his associates are quick to remind everyone that US President Joe Biden is older, at 80. But if Mr Abubakar and Mr Obi have their way then Mr Tinubu may not be in power for very long. The election tribunal is expected to start hearing the main arguments in their case on Tuesday and a ruling should be given within the next six months. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-65737846

  13. The Delhi High Court has refused to interfere with TRAI's recommendation for imposing a penalty of Rs. 1,050 crore on two Vodafone companies for allegedly denying inter-connectivity to Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (RJIL) under an Interconnection Agreement executed between them. The high court noted that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (TRAI) October 21, 2016 recommendation, which has been challenged here is also under challenge before the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT), and tribunals are expert bodies constituted under statute to decide the disputes arising under that statute. A bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad, in its May 24 judgment, said the TDSAT has been empowered to deal with all disputes arising under the TRAI Act. The Central government had passed an order on September 29, 2021 imposing a penalty on the petitioner companies for violation of the provisions of licence agreement and standards of Quality of Service (QOS) regulations of basic telephone service (wireline) and cellular mobile telephone service regulations, 2009. β€œAfter the tribunal gives the conclusion that the order dated September 29, 2021 passed by the respondent no.2 (government) is not sustainable in law, then automatically the recommendation dated October 21, 2016 which is under challenge in the instant writ petitions would be set aside. β€œThis court finds considerable force in the arguments advanced by the senior counsel for the respondents that any observations made by this court in the instant writ petitions will have an adverse impact on the Telecom Petitions which have been filed before the TDSAT,” the bench said. The high court disposed of the petitions filed by Vodafone Mobile Services and Vodafone Idea and made it clear that it has not made any observations on the merits of the case. β€œIt is always open for the tribunal to decide the issue on merits, including the recommendation dated October 21, 2016 which is under challenge in the instant petitions,” it said. It also noted that the TDSAT has already stayed the September 2021 order. On September 21, 2016, TRAI issued the a recommendation stating that the petitioners were at fault for not providing Point of Interconnections (POI) to RJIL, and recommended imposition of a penalty of Rs. 50 crore per circle for 21 Licensed Service Areas (LSA) where POI congestion exceeded the allowable limit of 0.5 percent. The petitioners said they requested TRAI to withdraw the recommendation, but to no avail after which they moved the high court. Vodafone has challenged the recommendation made by TRAI to the Secretary, Department of Telecommunication, for penal action, contending that the recommendation was contrary to law and deserved to be struck down. TRAI opposed the petitions saying they are premature at this stage and non-maintainable. https://www.gadgets360.com/telecom/news/vodafone-trai-no-relief-delhi-high-court-penalty-case-interconnectivity-reliance-jio-4071625
  14. We got our hands on the new Samsung Galaxy A24 so let's do an unboxing. Like the rest of Samsung's lineup of midrangers, the A24 comes with naught but a cable in its box. The Galaxy A24 packs a decent punch for its very reasonable price - upfront, there's a 6.5-inch 90Hz Super AMOLED panel of 1080p resolution, inside there's a 6nm MediaTek Helio G99 with 4GB, 6GB or 8GB of RAM, as well as a 5,000mAh battery with 25W charging (but you'd need to source the charger). The phone is made of plastic and is reasonably weighty at 195g. That weight makes the phone feel solidly put together. However, our unit has a very clacky power button. It may not be an issue but just the way they are, it's noticeable to a seasoned phone handler. The display has the typical AMOLED deep contrast and punchy output. It struggles under very strong light, however. Our unit is the Lime Green, and similarly to the Galaxy A34 has a youthful look to it. The Galaxy A24 epitomizes the Galaxy design language with a minimalist front and back, only interrupted by the cameras. It works for the Galaxy S23 Ultra, so it should work for the A24. We've started our Galaxy A24 review and will publish it next week - stick around! https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_a24_in_for_review-news-58661.php
  15. Intel might be preparing even more power-hungry desktop CPUs for its LGA 1700 platform, as reported by ASRock. ASRock Prepares Its Z790 Lineup To Support Even More Power-Hungry Intel "LGA 1700" Desktop CPUs Yesterday, we reported that ASRock was preparing three new motherboards within its Z790 Phantom Gaming lineup. These included the Phantom Gaming Z790 Riptide WiFim the Z790 Lightning WiFi and the flagship Z790 Nova WiFi. All three of these motherboards will carry a new and robust connectivity solution that offers Wi-Fi 7 capabilities and 5 GbE LAN which is coming to desktop platforms for the first time. So far, only ASRock and MSI have announced these features for its upcoming lineup and we expect more information at Computex 2023 in the coming week. The ASRock Phantom Gaming Z790 Nova WiFi motherboard is a brand new design and has a very powerful 20+1+1 phase power delivery. I did mention that the motherboard was making use of a very high-end heatsink solution and it looks like ASRock might have revealed why the company decided to go one step ahead of their Z790 Taichi design for this motherboard. In the press release, one major piece of information was overlooked and was caught sight by Videocardz. The presser states that the Nova WiFi will be ready to support even more power-hungry future CPUs. We know that LGA 1700 socket currently supports 12th Gen Alder Lake & 13th Gen Raptor Lake CPUs. Since there are slim chances of Meteor Lake making its way to the desktop platform, the only possibility that remains for a more power-hungry CPU is the Intel Raptor Lake refresh. ASRock unveils its new PHANTOM GAMING lineup and proudly announces the high-end model Z790 Nova WiFi7, the NOVA symbolizes the dazzling light and energy of a star explosion which provides powerful support to the gamers. The new motherboard equipped with latest WiFi7 and 5Gbps LAN to provide fastest internet connection, and to support the even more power hungry future CPUs. via ASRock The Intel Raptor Lake Refresh lineup for desktops is said to launch in the second half of 2023 and will offer enhancements in areas such as clock speeds with rumors of up to 6.2 and even 6.5 GHz clocks. We know that Intel already pushed things to the max with its Core i9-13900KS which is the first 6 GHz CPU and consumes 150W power at its base clock and 253 at full turbo power. The chip can easily sip up to 450W and higher when overclocked and that's also even without considering LN2 overclocks. So if Intel is really going to go the higher clock route, then we can expect another bump in the overall power consumption which should make Raptor Lake refresh one of the most if not the most power-hungry mainstream chip design in years. https://wccftech.com/intel-preparing-more-power-hungry-cpus-for-lga-1700-socket-according-to-asrock/

  17. Health Secretary Steve Barclay has admitted not all the 40 new hospitals promised for England by 2030 will be brand new. He told the BBC the pledge covered a "range" of building work. Refurbishments and new wings are also included in the figure. Mr Barclay also acknowledged that some of the hospitals originally promised would now be completed after 2030 but a total of 40 projects would still be finished by that date. Pressed over whether a refurbishment could be considered a "new" hospital, Mr Barclay told the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme: "If it's a new wing, a new facility, a women's and children hospital for example as part of a wider compass... what matters to you as a patient is whether the facilities are state of the art, whether they're new." Hospital buildings risky and need repair - bosses Work yet to start on 33 of 40 new hospitals Mr Barclay said: "We're being honest in saying there will be difficulties on some of the schemes. There's often local factors that need to be worked through like land acquisitions, service redesign… which make it challenging to complete those by 2030." He added: "We are being honest that some schemes will take slightly longer than 2030 but we're going to get on with them." The commitment to build 40 new hospitals by 2030 was made by Boris Johnson and included in the Conservative Party's 2019 manifesto. However, this week the government said eight schemes would now be completed after 2030 to prioritise five other more urgent developments. The five hospitals are deemed at risk of collapse because of deteriorating concrete infrastructure. Earlier this week Mr Barclay insisted the government would still meet its manifesto pledge because as well as these five hospitals it would also build three mental health hospitals on top of the original projects promised. On Sunday's programme he continued to refer to "40 new hospitals" even though he finally accepted that not all of them would be brand new. He told the BBC: "What the manifesto said was 40 new hospitals, that is what we committed to in the House [of Commons] on Thursday." A BBC investigation last week found building work was yet to start for 33 of the government's promised 40 new hospitals. Meanwhile, Mr Barclay clashed with the leader of the junior doctors' union, who also appeared on the programme, over the government's pay offer. He accused junior doctors of being unreasonable by refusing to budge on their demand for a 35% pay rise. But Dr Vivek Trivedi, who co-chairs the British Medical Association (BMA) Junior Doctors Committee, said deals that amounted to a real-terms pay cut were "driving doctors away". Junior doctors are set to walk out for 72 hours in June after pay talks stalled. It will be the third time junior doctors in England have staged strikes this year, after industrial action in March and April. Ministers have offered a 5% pay rise but Dr Trivedi said this would amount to "a massive real-terms pay cut" due to rising prices. "It was clear that after the government offered us their 5%, despite us going back and being creative… they were the ones who wouldn't budge," he said. However, Mr Barclay said: "They've refused to move from the 35%. And I don't think that is a fair and reasonable demand for them to take." He added: "We want to engage with them, we have been doing. It's the junior doctors who walked away from those negotiations by calling strikes." The health secretary insisted the government had already improved its pay offer from what was originally recommended by the independent pay review body. Asked what it would take to resolve the dispute, Dr Trivedi said: "We're trying all we can and are eager and ready to get back to the negotiating table - it is the government who are refusing to meet us there. "We have budged and are very happy to explore ways to fully restore our doctor's pay and we've come up with a variety of proposals to do that." The BMA says junior doctors have seen pay cut by 26% since 2008 once inflation - the rate prices are rising - is taken into account. The union wants a 35% pay rise to reverse this. Dr Trivedi said a pay offer which did not reverse this trajectory "would not be fair or reasonable". https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-65737681
  18. By tweaking a specific gene, scientists have discovered a way to permanently transform the scales on a chicken's feet into feathers. The results provide new insight into the bird's evolutionary origins from dinosaurs. "Like birds, it's clear today that many dinosaurs were partially covered with feathers as well as scales," said Michel Milinkovitch, a professor in the Department of Genetics and Evolution at the University of Geneva and co-author of the new research. "In birds, it's similar. So, by altering this gene, we can actually expand or decrease the proportion of the body that's covered by feathers or scales depending on when this gene is exactly expressed." To perform this genetic switcheroo, scientists in Switzerland targeted the sonic hedgehog gene (Shh), which controls a signaling pathway that determines the development of certain characteristics while at the embryonic level. This includes the brain and spinal cord; limbs; and skin appendages, like scales and feathers, according to the study, published May 17 in the journal Science Advances. (And, yes, Shh is named after the titular character of the po[CENSORED]r video game.) In the lab, scientists used a process known as "egg candling," which involves using a light source to illuminate the blood vessels inside an egg. This enabled them to identify a suitable vessel to directly inject the developing embryo with a molecule that activates the Shh pathway. For the study, they used broiler chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus), which are raised for commercial meat production, according to a statement. "We conducted the injection on day 11, which is the precise time when scales normally arise on the embryo," lead author Rory Cooper, a postdoctoral fellow in artificial and natural evolution at the University of Geneva, told Live Science. "If we perform the injection even one day too late, the embryo has already begun developing scales." After the eggs hatched, the scientists noticed the formation of downy juvenile feathers on the chicks' feet. These supersoft feathers were comparable to the feathers covering the rest of their bodies, according to the statement. "The effect is really clear once they hatch," Cooper said. "And the change lasts. Once the chickens develop the feathers, they don't go back to having scales on the targeted area." The researchers were surprised at how easy it was to shape-shift the chickens' feet and said it offers the team a new understanding of how these animals evolved. "Feathers are a function of change," Milinkovitch told Live Science. "In dinosaurs, feathers could have been used to regulate the animal's internal temperature or as a colorful display. Flight came later. By changing the expression of one gene, we were able to create a cascade of developmental effects that triggered feather growth, offering new insights into the evolution of these animals." https://www.livescience.com/animals/birds/scientists-changed-scales-on-chicken-feet-to-feathers-by-tweaking-a-single-gene
  19. Ford is banking on some bold decisions to make much-needed headway on electrification. It’s the kind of boldness that resulted in the electrically powered Ford Mustang Mach-E of 2019, and that more recently gave rise to the zero-emissions reimagination of the world’s biggest-selling pick-up truck – arguably Ford’s greatest commercial asset of them all. The F-Series – the most po[CENSORED]r and best-known version of which is the F-150 – has a history going back to the 1940s. More than 40 million have been made to date, almost all for American and Canadian buyers, but none has yet officially been offered for sale either in the UK or mainland Europe, nor has any been the subject of an Autocar road test. Until now. When it announced its intention to electrify the F-150, Ford made ears prick up the world over. The became known nine months before Tesla first showed its Cybertruck in 2019, its story building to the moment, in April 2022, when production started at Ford’s Rouge factory in Dearborn, Michigan. And it recently took a surprise turn when Ford of Europe announced that the car will be made available in Norway later this year, which invites us to wonder where else it might end up being sold. Range at a glance It remains to be seen how much of the Lightning’s American model range Ford will offer to European customers, or exactly where orders will open on price. In the US, the Lightning comes with two battery sizes, though all versions of it are twin-motor, four-wheel drive. The bottom-rung Pro trim uses the smaller battery, has 2.4kW of β€˜mains outlet’ power and has a more functional equipment level. XLTs are still kitted out like working cars, but Lariat and Platinum models are much more luxurious. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/ford/f-150-lightning
  20. Everton's fans basked briefly in their annual celebration of Premier League survival before the wider crisis engulfing one of English football's great old institutions burst to the surface at a highly charged Goodison Park. The facts of an occasion riddled with nervous tension were that Everton escaped their third last-day dice with relegation in the Premier League era with victory over Bournemouth - but the sub-plots were many and for a while this looked like the day 69 successive seasons in English football's top tier would end. It felt as if Everton would drop into the Championship as they demonstrated their lack of quality by struggling to break down Bournemouth at the same time as Leicester City led against West Ham United. At that point Everton were in the bottom three and a sense of panic was growing inside the stadium. It was in the 57th minute that Abdoulaye Doucoure wrote his name alongside Barry Horne in 1994 and Gareth Farrelly four years later as the Everton midfielder who saved the day with a spectacular long-range strike. The goal was greeted with an impromptu firework display behind the Gwladys Street stand, the heartbeat of Goodison Park, and yet another explosion of the noise that assaulted the ear-drums and provided the soundtrack for most of this tumultuous afternoon. With the stands ankle deep in chewed fingernails, not helped by an agonising 10 minutes of added time, referee Stuart Attwell's final whistle brought an outpouring of joy similar to the one that greeted Everton's win over Crystal Palace that brought safety in last season's penultimate game. 'Change needed or Everton will be back here again' After the joy - perfectly understandable - came the anger, as Everton's fans voiced their discontent with the club's hierarchy with chants of "Sack The Board" sweeping around Goodison. As manager Sean Dyche said: "It was a horrible day for all concerned. There was no joy in it for me other than getting the job done." In reality, this was a celebration born out of failure, the failure of Everton owner Farhad Moshiri, chairman Bill Kenwright and chief executive Denise Barrett-Baxendale and the calamitous strategies that have brought Everton to the financial and footballing precipice. Everton got away with it this time but if there is not significant change at the top of the club everyone will be back here again in this parlous position next season. The board have not attended a game since January, citing safety concerns, Everton have been referred to an independent commission by the Premier League over alleged breaches of financial fair play and for a while here they were looking at the sporting catastrophe of relegation. Movement needed in the boardroom? It is fair to say positive news has been in short supply until this win. Chairman Kenwright's most recent intervention was an ill-advised and poorly timed "open letter" which focused more on criticism of the board by supporters rather addressing any of the poor decision-making and squandered millions that have characterised the Moshiri era. The relationship between supporters and board is fractured beyond repair and it is easy to see why, after all the talk of "never again" when Everton got out of trouble at the next-to-last fence in 2021-22 before a much-trumpeted 'strategic review' did nothing other than lead to an even more perilous position this season. There will be more talk of "never again" but it cannot come from the same people who have delivered that message in the past. There have been too many mistakes. Moshiri - who has reached an exclusivity agreement with MSP Sports Capital for investment, which presumably will be directed at the new Bramley Moore Dock stadium - is at the forefront. The investment must come with change in a boardroom that has not simply presided over stagnation but a decline that almost ended in the Championship. The empty seats in Goodison's directors' box cannot remain unoccupied but it is almost impossible to see a situation where the board can return, which is unsustainable. Job done for Dyche but what next for Toffees boss? Dyche has completed the job by keeping Everton in the Premier League but he also needs help - or a squad that is accurately reflected by their league position will be in exactly the same place this time next year. Everton relied on those few who have served them so superbly through the struggles right to the end, particularly goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who saved from Matias Vina as the seconds ticked down. James Garner did a top-class shift as an emergency right wing-back, while Doucoure's goal confirmed the impact he has had under Dyche following his exile under Frank Lampard. He not only scored the winner against Bournemouth but also got two in the 5-1 win at Brighton that gave Everton three points not many had factored into the relegation equations. Dyche struck a tone of grim realism as he sifted through the aftermath of Everton's latest escape but how he gets the assistance he clearly requires to avoid another season like this remains to be seen. What has been a constant throughout has been the magnificent backing from Everton's supporters, who packed the nearby County Road in such numbers before kick-off that traffic on that busy stretch had to be diverted. They do not deserve the suffering they have been put through yet again and their furious reaction once they turned away from the joy was a clear indication they do not think Everton's board deserves them. And their instincts are right. It is not a time for the "never again" soundbites fans have heard before. Everton need a serious reboot and fresh ideas in their hierarchy otherwise this will merely be a temporary reprieve. For this night, though, and for those pouring out into Goodison Road heading for The Winslow Hotel, the famous old Evertonian hostelry, they could savour the taste of something to settle shattered nerves after their club once again went to the very edge before stepping back. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/65742415
