In the fast-moving arena of today’s global market, businesses need to ensure that they are doing everything possible to maximise efficiency, minimise costs, and maintain quality. One increasingly po[CENSORED]r way to do this is through outsourcing. Outsourcing is the way companies can delegate specific tasks to others who may be more specialised in that field. It involves hiring an outside company or individual to provide the necessary services without requiring the company to hire in-house employees for the job. For many companies, software development is a vital area of their business. Without in-house software development experts, however, this task can take an inordinate amount of time and money from the business that could be used for more beneficial purposes. This is why many of the world’s top companies are choosing to outsource software development. Choosing the right software development company is essential, as companies need to hire a team that offers its services with security, quality, and reliability. Why Outsourcing Software Development is Beneficial for Businesses Software development outsourcing carries with it several advantages. Without it, companies that may not be founded upon software development, but may need it for specific purposes, would be forced to go through the long and tedious process of finding, interviewing, and hiring experts. Additionally, because they would only need their services for a brief period, many experienced software developers would not be interested in working on a short-term contract. The other benefits of outsourcing software development include cost savings, access to specialised skills, faster market release, and the ability to stay up-to-date with the latest technologies. More than this, outsourcing gives companies flexibility, and the right software development company can provide quality assurance so that one can be confident of the results. Cost Effectiveness One of the most compelling advantages of outsourcing is that it can help companies save money by reducing costs associated with in-house software development projects. There are several reasons for this. Firstly, by outsourcing, companies do not have to put in the time and money required of HR to find and hire a team of developers. Instead, they would only be paying for the software development. Secondly, external companies typically charge lower hourly rates than those set by internal personnel due to their lack of overhead expenses, such as office space. This ties right into the third point. By outsourcing, companies also reduce operating expenses. Because it is what they are solely focused on, software development companies will already be equipped with the right tools and technologies for the job, so businesses don’t have to worry about those costs. Access to Specialised Skills Outsourcing software development allows companies to work with highly experienced developers from around the world and access different teams with specific skill sets needed for complex software projects. By outsourcing to a company with these teams, businesses can hand-pick the developers with the right skillset for their software and access elite programmers, project managers, business analysts, and CTOs who can advise and consult on the development process. Why Outsourcing Software Development Leads to Faster Market Release When outsourcing software development to a third-party firm, companies can streamline their project management processes. This allows in-house teams to focus on developing a fast and seamless go-to-market strategy, such as marketing or investment targeting, while the expert developers work on the software. The dedicated team of developers can deliver results faster and maintain high-quality standards. The Importance of Staying Up to Date with the Latest Technologies in Software Development When developing software in today’s global market, companies need to be using the latest first-rate technologies. If using an in-house team of developers, companies would need to acquire these technologies and ensure the team knows how to use them. On the other hand, if hiring a software development company, they will already have access to these tools, and their teams will have experience with them. Furthermore, to stay on the cutting edge, software development companies are always looking into the latest tech and finding ways to implement them into existing and future projects. Outsourcing to such a company allows businesses to have the software developed with the best technologies to suit objectives, resulting in a completely custom and modern solution to improve software. How to Choose the Right Software Development Company Now that the benefits are clear, how does one pick the right software development company? The best company is one that has extensive experience in the field, working with many different organisations and developing different kinds of software. Ensuring the company considers legal compliance is another vital factor to look out for. It is also beneficial to work with a software development company that partners with the giants of technology, like AWS and Zendesk, so that companies can know they are getting the best results. Finally, the company one works with should have a managed team structure, where they take care of all the particulars of software development rather than leaving the management up to in-house staff.

Some Wearable Gadgets Could Interfere With Cardiac Electronic Devices, Study Suggests The technology within wearable devices like Fitbits could interfere with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs), such as defibrillators and pacemakers, putting the health of individuals with those medical devices at risk, a study released Wednesday suggests. Fitbit Charge 3 fitness trackers are displayed in New York. AP/RICHARD DREW Using computer simulations, researchers at the University of Utah looked at how a sensing technology within some wearable devices called bioimpedance—which emits a small, imperceptible electric current to measure a person’s skeletal muscle mass, fat mass or level of stress—can impact people’s cardiac devices. When researchers tested a set of cardiac resynchronization therapy devices, which include certain types of pacemakers and are used to monitor and control heart rhythm, they found that slight electrical currents from wearable gadgets can sometimes confuse cardiac implants, causing them to operate incorrectly. In the case of implantable cardioverter defibrillators, which can both act as pacemakers and shock the heart to restore a regular rhythm, gadgets with bioimpedance could trick implanted devices into unnecessarily and painfully shocking patients, the study found. This study, published in the journal Heart Rhythm, was the first to look at potential problems associated with wearable device’s bioimpedance, and more studies are needed in order to better understand the effects on patients, researchers said. “We have patients who depend on pacemakers to live,” said Benjamin Steinberg, a cardiac electrophysiologist who co-authored the study. “If the pacemaker gets confused by interference, it could stop working during the duration that it is confused. If that interference is for a prolonged time, the patient could pass out or worse.” Implantable cardiac devices—which are common for individuals who need help controlling their heart rhythm—often come with warnings about potential interference from electronics because of magnetic fields. For example the Cleveland Clinic warns against carrying a phone in a pocket near a pacemaker. In 2021, a study recommended that patients with pacemakers and defibrillators keep any electronic devices that “may create magnetic interference” at least six inches away from implanted medical devices. The concern, according to researchers who published the study, is that implantable devices have a feature called “magnet mode” that can be activated from stronger magnets, like the ones found in newer iPhones. The study came after the Food and Drug Administration did its own testing, confirming that the magnetic field of some devices is “strong enough to turn on the magnetic safety mode of the medical devices in question.” The FDA also said the risk to patients was low. Earlier in 2021, Apple issued the same guidance for users with implantable cardiac devices.

AOC Launches 45-inch Dual QHD, 165Hz Gaming Monitor The large-format ultra-wide gaming monitor is starting to explode in po[CENSORED]rity, and AOC is fielding a new entry with the Agon AG455UCX. AOC uses a large 44.5-inch VA panel with a 5120x1440 (DQHD) resolution, which is slightly smaller than its existing 49-inch DQHD monitors. This resolution has also been adopted by the 49-inch Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 and 49-inch MSI 491C, although those monitors use Quantum Dot OLED panels. With a monitor this large, AOC employs a 1500R [CENSORED]ture to increase immersion, while viewing angles are the typical 178 degrees (horizontal and vertical). However, gamers will likely be seated front and center with this display and won’t be sharing it, where light/color fall-off can occur towards extreme angles with VA panels. Designed to compete with the best gaming monitors, the Agon AG455UCX has a 165Hz refresh rate and a 1ms response time. The monitor is listed as supporting AMD FreeSync, although we’d imagine it is also Nvidia G-Sync compatible. The typical contrast ratio is 2,400:1, while the maximum is 3,000:1. Brightness tops out at 400 nits, which is about average for a VA panel of this size. On the connectivity front, AOC outfits the Agon AG455UCX with three HDMI 2.1 ports, one DisplayPort 1.4 port, and a USB-C connector (DisplayPort Alt-Mode compatible). There’s also a four-port USB 3.2 Gen 1 hub onboard for connecting all your peripherals. Rounding things out are an integrated KVM switch and dual 5-watt speakers. The Agon AG455UCX also features a broad base to support its 22-pound heft. The stand is also adjustable for height, tilt, and swivel. There’s even a stand sprouting from the left side of the monitor to hold your headphones. AOC hasn’t announced pricing or availability for the Agon AG455UCX at this time. However, we imagine it will come in a little below the 49-inch Agon AG493UCX2, which has a street price of around $1,000

Crypto-mining malware attacking Apple Mac with pirated software A threat alert for some Apple Mac and MacBook computers running certain altered versions of Final Cut Pro editing software can hijack infected devices. Pirated copies of the po[CENSORED]r video editing software have been altered to contain a malicious instruction that takes over an infected Mac or MacBook forcing it to act as a cryptocurrency mining machine for a hacker. Worse, this latest malware disguised as legit Final Cut Pro can bypass and shut down some of the security processes running on an infected device. FIVE DISTURBING EXAMPLES OF WHY AI IS NOT QUITE THERE Photo representing crypto-mining malware attackers. Many hackers target computers to mani[CENSORED]te cryptocurrency. Photo representing crypto-mining malware attackers. Many hackers target computers to mani[CENSORED]te cryptocurrency. (CyberGuy.com) What is Cryptojacking? Cryptojacking - or a crypto-mining malware attack - is when a hacker successfully goes undetected placing malware on a target computer in order to use its resources to mani[CENSORED]te cryptocurrency like Bitcoin. Crypto-mining malware is generally difficult to root out and can compromise computers, laptops, smartphones, tablets, and connected devices. Strong antivirus protection can often eventually detect these hidden cryptojacking attacks when it notices unusual network traffic and processes running. Once infected, a victim’s device can often exhibit very slow speeds when it has been actively cryptojacked. Hackers are targeting Apple computers by using a legitimate-looking "Final Cut" app to install malware. Hackers then use the info to mani[CENSORED]te cryptocurrency. Investigative sleuthing by security professionals at Jamf Threat Labs led to tracing the malicious Final Cut Pro copies back to a known bad actor with a history of uploading and spreading viruses. Since 2019, this same hacker is responsible for seeding multiple dangerous malware attacks hidden inside pirated copies of both Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro X. How to avoid sneaky crypto-mining malware threats Download only legit software. The safest place to download software is from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Downloading software from other sources online comes at a much higher risk of inviting malware into your world. Update operating software. Make sure you are always running the latest version of operating software for your computer, smartphone, and tablet. Use strong antivirus protection. It has never been more important to make sure you have good antivirus protection on all your devices. I’ve broken down the top antivirus protection for Mac, PC, iOS and Android devices. Microsoft Admits Pushing Windows 11 Upgrade Offers to Ineligible PCs Microsoft has admitted that it has erroneously been offering Windows 11 updates on ineligible devices. The software and devices maker’s newest OS has a long way to go to catch up with Windows 10, so it is keeping the pressure on with promotions, ads, and upgrade offers. However, in its efforts to boost Windows 11 adoption, it seems that Microsoft has been mistakenly dangling the upgrade carrot in front of owners of ineligible systems. Thankfully, Microsoft’s above described Windows 11 upgrade offer issue has now been fixed. “Some hardware ineligible Windows 10 and Windows 11, version 21H2 devices were offered an inaccurate upgrade to Windows 11,” wrote Microsoft in the most recent update to its known issues and notifications(opens in new tab) portal. “These ineligible devices did not meet the minimum requirements to run Windows 11. Devices that experienced this issue were not able to complete the upgrade installation process.” Affected systems were running Windows 10, version 22H2; Windows 11, version 21H2; Windows 10, version 21H2; and Windows 10, version 20H2. Microsoft says it first became aware of this upgrades issue on Thursday, and pats itself on the back for putting a sticking plaster on this self-inflicted wound “on the same day.” Breaking down a user’s will enough that they submit to the Windows 11 upgrade process, then snatching it away, isn't ideal. Moreover, this process could have wasted some considerable time for end users, chaperoning them through the upgrade process only for it to be unable to complete. We don’t know exactly how far the upgrade process progressed before it was halted, and whether the previous installations were in any way impacted, potentially causing even greater inconvenience. However, one Windows user reported that the sizable updater files started downloading in preparation for installation. According to the latest StatCounter figures measuring website visitors worldwide, Windows 11 users account for approximately 18% of desktop Windows users. Windows 10 users make up 69% of users, and some people are still holding tightly to Windows 7 ( 9.5%), but hardly anyone now uses Windows 8.X or Windows XP and is active on sites StatCounter monitors. Pondering over the StatCounter chart for the last year it looks like the point where Windows 11 eventually passes 10 is still a long way off. Microsoft must hope that compelling new devices with Windows 11 preinstalled and the end of support for Windows 10 Home and Pro in October 2025 will accelerate the changing of the guard. Windows 11 might have got off to a rocky start but it gained some important tweaks in December, when it was reported its gaming performance issues had at last fully been addressed. In other recent Windows 11 news, we reported that the OS is soon going to get a proper search box on the taskbar. However, Microsoft was again ruffling feathers with its decision to show watermarks on systems running Windows 11 despite not meeting all the hardware requirements.

Kuo: Apple MR headset delayed due to software bugs Ming-Chi Kuo shared his latest update on the Apple MR headset and the bad news is that the device will likely be postponed to launch alongside the iPhone 15 series in September. Kuo explains that the headset is facing software issues and the likelihood of a potential release this Spring is dwindling. There are no specifics on the nature of the mentioned software issues but it seems that the rumored WWDC launch is unlikely at this point. China’s Luxshare ICT is expected to be the leading manufacturing partner for the Apple MR headset with mass production set for the first half of this year. Based on recent rumors, Apple might launch its MR headset as the Reality Pro. The device will likely run its own xrOS operating system and may cost as much as $3,000 according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Kuo also shared some preliminary details for the second-generation Apple MR headset set to debut in 2025. It will reportedly come in two versions – a more affordable one made by Foxconn and a higher-end model which will again be manufactured by Luxshare.

Samsung Galaxy S23's first update brings February 2023 patches Samsung offers some of the best Android phones, and they all come with the promise of prompt software updates and security patches. The Galaxy S23 series is certainly carrying the same legacy, and now that the phones are actually on store shelves, the company is starting to shift its attention towards updates. The first system update for the Galaxy S23 family is now rolling out in multiple regions. Samsung Galaxy S23 series AWBD OTA The build number of the new firmware is S91xBXXU1AWBD and it is intended for the global variant of the Galaxy S23 lineup (model number SM-S91xB). For now, the rollout is limited to Europe, but other countries are expected to get the OTA soon. The main change in the software update is that the Febrtuary 2023 security patches are included. The same fixes arrived on Google's Pixel devices on February 6 and have also appeared on a few other Samsung Galaxy phones over the past two weeks. Apart from that, the new build comes with the usual stability improvements that you can expect from a day-one update. There is no increment in the bootloader version, though, so downgrading is still possible. As is usually the case with staged software rollouts, it might take several days before the update is rolled out to everyone. However, if you're accustomed with PC-based flashing, then you can skip the waiting queue and run the new release right now by installing it manually on your Galaxy device. All in all, the build seems like a no fuss one to install from the moment you receive your Galaxy S23, S23+, or S23 Ultra. If you're still wondering whether to buy the Samsung flagship over other phones, do take a look at our Galaxy S23 Ultra review before making the decision.

Windows 11 Watermark Showing Up On Unsupported Systems Microsoft finally seems to be getting serious (well, serious-ish) about urging users running Windows 11 on unsupported hardware to upgrade their systems — or downgrade their version of Windows. Since the January 2023 Patch Tuesday update, users running the production version of Windows 11 2H22 on unsupported hardware have reported, via the Windows Feedback Hub and Microsoft's forums, seeing a watermark that says "System requirements not met. Go to Settings to learn more" in the lower right corner of their desktop. "Going to settings and clicking the "Learn more" hyperlink brings me the to the Microsoft website talking about installing 11 on devices with system requirements un-met. It also suggests reverting back to 10 and that you can only do this 10 days after upgrading," reports one user on the Microsoft Community forums(opens in new tab). Another user on the Windows feedback hub reports they bought their PC with Windows 11 preinstalled, and are only now seeing this message. Microsoft first demoed this watermark 'feature' for Windows Insider testers last March, so it's not too surprising that it's finally made its way to the production build. Not all users are seeing it, however, so Microsoft may be testing it on select accounts or rolling it out slowly (or both). Windows 11 has some surprisingly strict minimum system requirements, because it requires TPM 2.0 security. As a result, Windows 11 is only officially supported on CPUs equivalent to, or newer than, Intel's 8th-Gen (and some 7th-Gen) and AMD's 2nd-Gen processors. It also requires 4GB RAM and 64GB storage, minimum. If your PC meets these requirements and you're getting this message, you may need to enable TPM 2.0 in your BIOS. At the moment, it looks like unsupported systems will only have to deal with a mildly-annoying watermark, but this could be the first step toward more drastic measures. Microsoft has warned that it will disable updates on unsupported systems (though this clearly has yet to come to fruition, as you'll only get the watermark if you install the latest update).

Microsoft Releases New Driver and Firmware Controls for Windows Update for Business Microsoft has released a new update that brings driver and firmware management capabilities for the Windows Update for Business deployment service. This release gives organizations better control over the deployment of updates to eligible cloud-attached Windows client devices. Windows Update for Business (WUfB) is a deployment service that enables IT admins to manage and distribute updates to Windows machines. They can create deployment rings to test Windows updates with a select group of users before being rolled out to all devices. It also allows administrators to delay the installation of updates for a specific period. Microsoft emphasizes: the importance of driver servicing as hardware vendors frequently release new updates and fixes to address security vulnerabilities. The company has collaborated with po[CENSORED]r OEMs (like Dell, HP, and Lenovo) to ensure that all drivers are delivered via Windows Update. Microsoft Releases New Driver and Firmware Controls for Windows Update for Business With this release, IT Pros can view a list of the best drivers for all enrolled devices. It’s also possible to control the rollout or pause problematic drivers on specific machines. Administrators can use Windows Update for Business reports to track deployment status and find client devices that might require attention. “Our customers consistently ask us for more, and better, control over drivers and firmware updates. We are excited to collaborate with the Windows Update for Business deployment service, to bring these management controls to our Windows E3 and E5 customers, leveraging Microsoft Graph, in Intune later this year. We look forward to our continued partnership with the Windows team in helping organizations simplify endpoint management and protect their cloud and hybrid workforce,” said Steve Dispensa, VP of Product Management for Microsoft Intune. Mobile Device Management solutions to add support for driver servicing Microsoft’s new driver and firmware management capabilities are available to enterprise customers with a Windows E3/E5/A3/A5 or Microsoft 365 Business Premium subscription. However, these controls lack support for Windows Server Update Services or System Center Configuration Manager. Microsoft plans to bring these features to mobile device management tools, though there’s no ETA yet.

World's first 120W GaN Travel Adapter lets you fast-charge your gadgets anywhere in the world It seemed like only a matter of time before GaN tech made its way to travel adapters. You see, travel adapters are already clunky. By virtue of their universal design and integrated socket shapes, travel adapters can’t really be small… however, they can be powerful. Meet Swift, the world’s first 120W travel adapter build with 3rd gen GaN technology. Like every travel adapter, Swift supports the socket designs of over 150 countries, but unlike any other travel adapter, it also lets you plug in as many as 6 devices at the same time and fast-charge all of them simultaneously. You’ll never travel the same way ever again. Swift’s design leverages 3rd gen GaN technology, which allows it to deliver a lot more power with much higher efficiency and less heat. GaN (which stands for Gallium Nitride) is increasingly becoming the better alternative to silicon in semiconductor design. While most power bricks and adapters have leveraged GaN technology to make themselves smaller, Swift uses GaN to super-serve its user while still being the perfect size for a travel adapter. You see, size reduction isn’t really possible when you’ve got as many as 4 different universal socket designs built into your form factor… however, the Swift’s size puts versatility front and center with as many as 4 USB-C ports, 1 USB-A port, and 1 travel-friendly power socket design that lets you simultaneously charge 6 devices together. The GaN semiconductor on the inside gives the Swift a staggering 120W output, letting you fast-charge every conceivable gadget from your phone to your tablet, laptop, power bank, camera, drone, or any other gadget. Two 100W fast-charging USB-C ports on the base cover pretty much all your high-power needs, letting you swiftly charge your laptop, tablet, or smartphone at rapid speeds (theoretically it could charge your phone to 100% in just 8 minutes). Two more 20W USB-C ports let you quickly juice another device like a power bank, TWS earbuds, or your smartwatch, and a final USB-A port gives you another 20W output. There’s also a universal plug adapter on the front for devices like your hair dryer, beard trimmer, or any other appliance that can’t be hooked to the Swift via USB. The Swift internally performs power management to give each device the power it needs, while also protecting itself and your gadgets from surges, overcharging, overheating, and other anomalies that could damage your electronics. It even comes with a spare 10A fuse just in case there’s ever a problem. No more worrying whether that random socket in a foreign airport or café is safe to hook your expensive laptop or phone to. The Swift’s universal design features four po[CENSORED]r socket shapes (American, British, European, Australian) that allow it to work in over 150 countries around the world. Sliders built into the side of the adapter allow you to eject or retract plug styles, pretty much following the same style as regular travel adapters. When shut, the device measures 2.9 inches vertically, 2 inches across, and 2.2 inches in depth, putting the Swift at par with most standard adapters that have the same footprint. Starting at $59, the Swift definitely sits on the pricier side, but it absolutely beats having to buy and carry 6 different adapters for all your gadgets. You can even add compatible nylon-braided USB-C and Lightning cables to your pledge, with their own built-in LED screens that display power readings to tell you if your gadget is fast-charging or not! The Swift begins shipping starting July 2023.

Cognitec upgrades biometric capture hardware with PAD and on-device facial recognition Germany-based firm Cognitec has upgraded its biometric FaceVACS-Entry photo capture device with presentation attack detection (PAD) capabilities and a feature to enable facial recognition between live faces and images from ID documents or databases. According to a company announcement, the updated device can perform ISO/IEC 19794-5 full frontal format and ISO/IEC 39794-5 general-purpose face image compliance tests. It is also capable of automatic or operator-triggered image acquisition and can perform either instant 1:1 biometric verification or identification against small on-device databases. The device can automatically detect a face, adjust the camera’s position according to the individual’s height, perform dynamic lighting, capture images, and verify the person’s identity. Regarding applications for FaceVACS-Entry, Cognitec mentions biometric eGates, desks, kiosks, free-standing pillars, and border control booths. “The combined service of photo capture and person verification saves travelers lots of time at the border. They should complete all immigration procedures in just a few seconds,” comments Cognitec Managing Director Alfredo Herrera. “This new product version unites all the proven features we have thus far developed for border control applications, equipping it perfectly for other identity management use cases.” More generally, the executive says the device can be deployed in all applications requiring the acquisition of standards-compliant photos or comparing probe images against a live image or stored image data. Cognitec confirmed it would showcase the FaceVACS-Entry photo capture device at the inter airport Southeast Asia (IASEA) exhibition in March. The upgraded solution comes almost a year after Cognitec was acquired by the Salto Group in March 2022. More recently, the company promoted Mikael Fagerlund to its vice president for sales and marketing in EMEA.

How many software updates will the Galaxy S23 get? As impressive as the new Samsung Galaxy S23 range of smartphones is, the improvements over the Galaxy 22 series are mostly incremental. As a result, you might be thinking of sticking with your current handset or hoping to pick up a previous-generation phone at a deal price. This can be a savvy approach, but you should also consider how long Samsung will support your next phone. To this end, we’ve looked at how many software updates the Galaxy S23 will get. Whichever phone in the Galaxy S23 range you go for, you’ll be treated to the Android 13-based One UI 5.1 software. Developed specifically for the latest Galaxy flagships, One UI 5.1 brings a host of new features, some of which are exclusive to the S23 series. It will get its first major update to Android 14 later this year, and that will be the first of four software updates to which Samsung has committed. That will take the Galaxy S23 software updates through until 2027. Android 17, if that is how Google is still referring to its OS updates by that time, will be the final update that the Galaxy S23 phones receive in 2026. If you choose to hold on to your handset for that long or you decide to pick one up at a discount in the coming months and years, then you can be reassured that it will also be protected. Samsung will provide five years of security patches to the S23 range. That means your smartphone will be secure until at least 2028, by which time you might well have your eye on the next cutting-edge flagship. Samsung may have felt compelled to make these commitments — more than the minimum proposed by the EU — to keep up with its iOS rival. Apple doesn’t tend to make firm statements on how many updates each iteration of iPhone will receive, but it has regularly led the way in this regard. Past generations have regularly received at least six years of updates and sometimes up to eight years. Samsung’s commitment should reassure buyers who may be deciding whether to splash out on the Galaxy S23 now or wait for the iPhone 15 to arrive.

South Africa holds state funeral for Archbishop Desmond Tutu The funeral mass for South African anti-apartheid campaigner Archbishop Desmond Tutu has taken place at the Anglican cathedral in Cape Town. Tutu, a Nobel Peace Prize winner who helped end the racist regime in South Africa, died last Sunday aged 90. In his eulogy, President Cyril Ramaphosa described Tutu as "the spiritual father of our new nation". Tutu had insisted there should be no "lavish spending" on the funeral. He wanted "the cheapest available coffin". Family, friends, clergy and politicians were among those who gathered at St George's Cathedral for Saturday's service, which had limited numbers because of coronavirus restrictions. Tutu's widow Nomalizo Leah sat in a wheelchair at the front of the congregation wearing a purple shawl - the colour of her late husband's clerical robes. Desmond Tutu - South Africa's rebellious priest A time for new heroes after Desmond Tutu Archbishop Desmond Tutu: A life in pictures In the main eulogy at the official state funeral on Saturday, Mr Ramaphosa described the archbishop as a "crusader in the struggle for freedom, for justice, for equality and for peace. Not only in South Africa… but around the world as well". "If we are to understand a global icon to be someone of great moral stature, of exceptional qualities, and of service to humanity there can be no doubt that it refers to the man we're laying to rest today," he said. IMAGE SOURCE,EPA Image caption, About 100 people attended the funeral Saturday's funeral was given a special status, usually designated for presidents and very important people. Tutu had requested that the only flowers in the cathedral should be a "bouquet of carnations from his family", according to the Archbishop Tutu IP Trust and the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation. His ashes are to be interred behind the pulpit at St George's Cathedral - the Anglican diocese he served as Archbishop for 35 years. It was earlier revealed that Tutu is to be aquamated - a process using water that is described as an environmentally friendly alternative to cremation. line End of an era Nomsa Maseko, BBC News, Cape Town Even though only 100 invited guests physically attended Archbishop Desmond Tutu's funeral service at the St George's cathedral, many turned up to honour him by watching proceedings from public viewing areas. Most were visibly emotional. One man described his attendance of Tutu's funeral as a full-circle moment because he also witnessed the release of Nelson Mandela from prison and watched Tutu and Mandela hold hands with their fists in the air as South Africa became a democracy. It's the end of an era. The last of South Africa's well-known freedom fighters leaves behind a difficult task for the leaders of the nation: to rid the country of corruption and racial divisions and lead the way forward, in the spirit of the moral compass which was the guiding force of Tutu's leadership. line In a video message at the mass, the Archbishop of Canterbury described how Tutu "lit up the world". He said that his paying tribute to Tutu was "like a mouse giving a tribute to an elephant". Tutu's daughter said the outpouring of love for her father had "warmed the cockles of our hearts". "Because we shared him with the world, you share part of the love you held for him with us," she said. Many people in Cape Town turned up to file past the archbishop's coffin as it lay in state. One man, Wally Mdluli, hitchhiked more than 1,000km (620 miles) across the country from Bloemfontein to Cape Town - enlisting the help of family and friends to pay for some of the trip and even sleeping at a petrol station on the way. "I feel fulfilled after I saw the coffin. It's like his spirit is in me," he told the BBC's Nomsa Maseko in Cape Town. Tutu used his high profile to speak out against the oppression of black people in his home country, always saying his motives were religious and not political. After Nelson Mandela became South Africa's first black president in 1994, Tutu was appointed by him to a Truth and Reconciliation Commission set up to investigate crimes committed by both white and black people during the apartheid era. Tutu was awarded the Nobel prize in 1984 for his role in the struggle to abolish the apartheid system. He was also credited with coining the term Rainbow Nation to describe the ethnic mix of post-apartheid South Africa, but in his latter years he expressed regret that the nation had not coalesced in the way in which he had dreamt.
