  1. Keyboards Go Open Source With System76's ‘Launch Configurable Keyboard’ System76 currently offers pre-built desktops, laptops, and servers meant to complement its Pop!_OS open source operating system. The company said in March 2020 that it would expand its lineup with a keyboard. On Wednesday, it offered more details about that peripheral in a public Git repository spotted by Phoronix. We already knew that System76 wanted its first keyboard to be highly configurable and tightly integrated with Pop!_OS features like Auto-Tiling. Last year, the company also said it wanted to reimagine the keyboard’s basic layout to make common keys easier to reach, reducing wasted space by shrinking the spacebar, etc. Now we’ve gotten a glimpse at what System76 has been working on for the last 11 months. The public Git repository showed that the Launch Configurable Keyboard is expected to feature an open source PCB, chassis, and firmware; swappable keycaps and switches; and an integrated dock with two USB-C and USB-A connectors. System76 said the chassis would be constructed from milled aluminum, and Phoronix reported that it would be manufactured in Denver, Colorado. The company also said that “each pocket, port, and hole is designed and precisely machined so that swapping switches and plugging in cables is easy and secure for the user.” That configurability is core to the Launch Configurable Keyboard’s design. (Which, given the name, shouldn’t come as a surprise.) System76 said the keyboard would ship with additional keycaps for greater customization and support for a utility called the System76 Keyboard Configurator meant to offer easy button remapping. The ability to remap specific keys might prove critical because System76 made sweeping changes to the standard keyboard layout. Just look at this diagram: System76 Launch Configurable Keyboard Layout (Image credit: System76) The company said it plans to offer extra keys, a keycap puller, and a switch puller with each unit. The PCB will purportedly accept "any RGB switch with an MX-compatible footprint," such as Cherry MX RGB or Kailh BOX switches, which should make it easy for mechanical switch enthusiast to use their preferred equipment. Like the many of the best gaming keyboards, System76 said the Launch Configurable Keyboard would also offer independent RGB lighting for each key, n-key rollover support, plus a detachable lift bar that "can be magnetically secured to add 15 degrees of angle to your keyboard for ergonomics." We're still missing two critical pieces of information: the Launch Configurable Keyboard's launch date and price point. System76 originally said it expected to release the keyboard in the summer of 2020, but now that we're a few months into 2021, it's still unclear when the product will be available to purchase.

  2. VW, Microsoft partner to develop self-driving car software FRANKFURT -- Volkswagen Group and Microsoft are expanding their cooperation involving the U.S. software giant's cloud technology to include speeding up development of automated driving. VW's new software division will build a cloud-based platform with Microsoft that will help simplify development processes and allow faster integration into its vehicle fleet, the automaker said Thursday in a statement. The partnership will make it much easier to deploy software updates to add new features to cars, a practice that helped to set Tesla apart from many rivals. The deal means that cars that are sold with a few driver-assistance features today could add new capabilities over time that bring them closer to autonomous driving, said Scott Guthrie, executive vice president of cloud and artificial intelligence at Microsoft. "For our phones 15 or 20 years ago, when you bought it, it pretty much never changed. Now, we expected every week or every couple of days that, silently, there's new features," Guthrie told Reuters in an interview. "That ability to start to program the vehicle in richer and richer ways, and in a safe way, transforms how the experience works." VW Group, which owns brands such as Audi and Porsche, is working on self-driving cars for the future and driver-assistance features such as adaptive cruise control in current vehicles. But the group's brands had been developing those features independently. Last year, VW consolidated some of those development efforts into a subsidiary called Car.Software to better coordinate among its brands, with each brand handling its own work around the look and feel of the software while collaborating on core safety functions such as detecting obstacles. CONTENT FROM IHS MARKIT BLOG Drivers reveal exactly how fast they want EVs to charge – and these cars are setting the pace It comes as no surprise that the biggest setback for electric cars has been range anxiety and the 'inconvenience' of charging them. READ MORE The deal announced Thursday will put VW Group brands on a common cloud provider, said Dirk Hilgenberg, head of the automaker's Car.Software organization. "Over-the-air updates are paramount," Hilgenberg said. "This functionality needs to be there. If you can't do it, you will lose ground." VW has budgeted about 27 billion euros ($33 billion) of investment in digital operations by 2025 and plans to increase the share of software it develops in-house to 60 percent from 10 percent. VW first struck a deal with Microsoft in 2018 for an automotive cloud to connect future cars and will dispatch initial test fleets later this year. VW's Automotive Cloud engineering team, based in Seattle, has enabled data to be exchanged between the vehicles and the cloud through Azure edge services. The software is slated to be used in VW’s production cars starting in 2022. Microsoft added another automotive partner earlier this year by joining forces with and investing in General Motors' Cruise. It competes for deals with Amazon, which is working with VW on an industrial cloud that will connect the automaker’s factories. Bloomberg and Reuters contributed to this report Europe: Focus on mobility: Sign up for our monthly newsletter that looks at how automakers, suppliers and emerging, non-traditional players are helping usher in the future of mobility.

  3. Amazon's Huge Buy Two Get One Free Sale Is Back With Deals On PS5 Games And More Amazon has kicked off its first big buy two, get one free sale of 2021 featuring thousands of products. The sale launched alongside Target's latest B2G1 free promotion, which is a fairly common "coincidence." Video games, Blu-rays, books, and much more are featured in the promotion. Amazon has even included some PS5 and Xbox Series X games, though they are selling out rather quickly. It's unclear how long this deal lasts, but it will likely follow Target's lead and end on Saturday, February 13. There are only just over 100 games in Amazon's B2G1 free promotion, though there are some good ones. The PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of NBA 2K21 are up for grabs. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is also included (and discounted) for PlayStation and Xbox platforms. PS5 users can also pick up action-RPG Godfall.

  4. RTX-Spensive! Galax 3090 HOF Will Top Out at $4,000 The Galax RTX 3090 HOF (Hall of Fame) is a super-built graphics card designed for hitting the highest frequencies possible on Ampere. However, with that super over-engineered piece of machinery comes a super high MSRP: E-tailer MWave has released pricing for its stock of RTX 3090 HOF cards, and the lineup starts at just over $3,007 USD (AUD 3800) and tops out at $3,999 USD (AUD 4,499). The three models listed on MWave's site are global variants of the RTX 3090 HOF (not the Chinese exclusives): The vanilla HOF, HOF Limited Edition, and HOF Premium. We don't know the differences between the three; all we know is the premium and vanilla HOF models feature identical boost frequencies of 1815 MHz. Meanwhile, the Limited Edition SKU increases its boost clock to 1875 MHz. For pricing, the RTX 3090 HOF starts at AUD 3,899, the HOF Premium lands at AUD 3,999, and HOF Limited Edition SKU lands at a whopping $4,499. Converting directly to USD would be $3,007 for the HOF, $3,470 for the HOF Limited Edition, and $3,999 for the HOF Premium. But keep in mind that this is a direct conversion, so it's a very rough estimate of what these cards might cost in the United States. Things like tariffs and taxes can significantly change graphics card prices once they reach your closest retailer. Presumably, these cards will be much cheaper in the United States. Nevertheless, these crazy prices for the RTX 3090 HOF lineup will make them the most expensive 3090s on the market, even ahead of the RTX 3090 Kingpin (which costs AUD 3399). But you should never expect a good deal with a HOF card in the first place. The Hall of Fame graphics cards are optimized towards high-end overclockers and go all out with the best components you can put in a GPU.

  6. Count on these five tips to improve your thyroid function Did you know that your metabolism is controlled by the thyroid gland? The butterfly-shaped organ located in the base of the neck releases hormones that control metabolism which is responsible for how your body uses energy. Hence, it is important to tackle thyroid-related issues early through lifestyle tweaks to reach “optimum body weight”, said nutritionist Munmun Ganeriwal in a post on Instagram. Sharing how one can strengthen the thyroid gland whether suffering from hypo or hyperthyroidism, Ganeriwal listed out these pointers. Avoid packaged foods ‘High fibre’ biscuits, ‘multi-grain’ chips, and ‘diet’ bhel are loaded with sodium, salts and preservatives which creates havoc to the delicate balance of sodium and potassium in the body cells, mentioned Ganeriwal. Include whole grains Eat whole grains (jowar/bajra/nachni/rice) in the form of rotis, bhaat, thepla and bhakri. They are rich in fibre, carbs and iodine. Adequate iodine is essential for the synthesis of thyroid hormones, almost like basic building blocks. ALSO READ |Revealed: The best diets for 2021 Have vitamins Deficiency of vitamin D is significantly associated with thyroid gland malfunction. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. To make up for low vitamin D levels, support the thyroid and to lose weight, it’s important to have essential fats like ghee, coconut, white butter and filtered oils. All ‘low fat’ ice-creams, ‘skimmed’, ‘double-toned’ milk will actually do just the opposite, said Ganeriwal.

  7. Renault 4 next in line for EV revival The reinvented Renault 5 hatchback will be joined by a revived version of the classic Renault 4 as part of the French marque’s plan to invigorate its future EV line-up. The prototype version of the new 5, which is due on sale in 2023, was unveiled as the cornerstone of new boss Luca de Meo’s bold plan to revive the Renault Group’s fortunes. It will be one of seven EVs – four cars and three commercial vehicles – that Renault will launch in the next five years. Recent reports suggested that Renault was considering reviving both the 4 and 5 as future EVs. While only the 5 was revealed, de Meo admitted that there is “at least one more” revival of an old name being planned. Insiders have confirmed that model is the 4, with the new electric version planned to go on sale in 2025. Asked about future EV plans, Renault design chief Gilles Vidal hinted that “some” future models “might go towards a retro-futuristic approach, while the rest of the line-up is super-original and pushed towards the future”. He added: “Everything can coexist in a range of cars; you can play around with your assets.” The new 4 will use the same CMF-B EV platform as the 5 and most of its mechanical underpinnings. But while both models will sit in the B-segment and feature a retro design, they will be pitched quite differently. The original 4, which was produced from 1961 until 1994, with more than eight million examples sold, was largely designed for use as a versatile utility vehicle in rural France. A modern interpretation of the 4’s philosophy would result in a small EV close in dimensions to a compact crossover, which would pitch it at a fast-growing market segment and provide ample differentiation from the sportier, more hatch-like 5. Such a car could also spawn a compact commercial derivative, which would be ideal for urban deliveries.

  8. Iran 'hides spyware in wallpaper, restaurant and games apps' Iran is running two surveillance operations in cyber-space, targeting more than 1,000 dissidents, according to a leading cyber-security company. The efforts were directed against individuals in Iran and 12 other countries, including the UK and US, Check Point said. It said the two groups involved were using new techniques to install spyware on targets' PCs and mobile devices. And this was then being used to steal call recordings and media files. One of the groups, known as Domestic Kitten or APT-50, is accused of tricking people into downloading malicious software on to mobile phones by a variety of means including: repackaging an existing version of an authentic video game found on the Google Play store mimicking an app for a restaurant in Tehran offering a fake mobile-security app providing a compromised app that publishes articles from a local news agency supplying an infected wallpaper app containing pro-Islamic State imagery masquerading as an Android application store to download further software The American-Israeli company's researchers documented 1,200 victims being targeted by the campaign, living in seven countries. There had been more than 600 successful infections, it said. The second group, known as Infy or Prince Of Persia, is said to spy on the home and work PCs of dissidents in 12 countries, extracting sensitive data after tricking people into opening malicious email attachments. The Iranian government has not commented on the report. Furball malware Domestic Kitten's operation was first identified in 2018. And Check Point said there was evidence it had run at least 10 campaigns since 2017. Four of these were still active, with the most recent beginning in November 2020. And it was using an Iranian blog site, Telegram channels and text messages to lure people into installing its infected software, which the researchers have dubbed Furball, which could: Uzbekistan The other group, Infy, is said to have been operating as far back as 2007. Its most recent activity had targeted PCs, with fake emails with attractive content, usually with an attached document, Check Point said. One example provided was of a document apparently about loans being offered to disabled veterans.

  10. Pimoroni to Release RP2040-Powered Mechanical Keyboard The Raspberry Pi Pico's RP2040 SoC is turning up in the most unlikely of places, one of which is a redesigned mechanical keyboard from Pimoroni. Keybow 2040 is the latest version of Pimoroni's Keybow keyboard add ons, and this version is the first to feature the RP2040 SoC as the brains of the project. We reached out to Pimoroni and we have all the confirmed details on this most unusual RP2040 board. Pimoroni's Keybow has been around for some time. It was developed to use a Raspberry Pi Zero as a simple USB gadget that would emulate keyboard keys or be used to run macros. Keybow RP2040 has the new "Pi Silicon" SoC at the heart of the board, not a Raspberry Pi Pico but the RP2040 SoC embedded to the custom-designed board, which is used to emulate a USB HID device. It sports a 4 x 4 matrix of Cherry MX-compatible mechanical keys, all of which have an RGB LED underneath controlled by an IS31FL3731 PWM LED matrix driver. Of course, each of these LEDs can be independently controlled to produce colorful animations or to indicate function / status of a key. Power and data connectivity is handled via a USB-C connector. On launch there will be MicroPython and C/C++ libraries with examples which can be tweaked to serve your needs. Pimoroni aim to have keyboard emulation ready on launch, which would introduce the feature to Raspberry Pi Pico's own version of MicroPython. At present, keyboard emulation on the Pico is only possible with C and CircuitPython from Adafruit. The anticipated release date is from the week commencing February 22, but this depends on Pimoroni receiving their allocation of RP2040 SoC. Price looks to be around £50, or about $68. Tom's Hardware will shortly be receiving their review unit and it will be added to our everything we know page for the Raspberry Pi Pico.

  13. Final Fantasy 14 Patch 5.5 Detailed, A Two-Part Update Leading Into Endwalker Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker was revealed during the FFXIV announcement showcase--it's the next expansion for the MMORPG, and it came with a teaser trailer and several details outlined by director and producer Naoki Yoshida. While there are wild implications for where the story is going next, that wasn't all that the FFXIV team had in store. A new Live Letter from the Producer stream followed the showcase to detail FFXIV patch 5.5, which will lead into the Endwalker expansion. It's a two-part update that's called Death Unto Dawn and will set players up for the Endwalker story. The first part will go live on April 13, which lines up with the PlayStation 5 open beta for FFXIV, and the second part is set for the end of May, which comes after the digital FFXIV Fan Fest event (scheduled for May 15 and 16). The following details may contain spoilers for those not caught up in FFXIV's main story. Now Playing: Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker Teaser Trailer Screenshots shared in the Live Letter stream show a gathering of several major characters who represent the various regions across FFXIV's world, and this is likely about the events that happened at the very end of the 5.4 storyline. The new main story dungeon was also teased--it's called Palgth'an and looks like it could be the beginning of destruction across Eorzea (which has been alluded to in the narrative and Endwalker details). Palgth'an is compatible with the Trust system so you can take AI characters with you. No Caption Provided Patch 5.5 will feature the conclusion to the Sorrow of Werlyt optional questline. This also comes with a new trial boss fight called The Cloud Deck and it'll pit eight players against Diamond Weapon--an Extreme difficulty version will also be available. As expected, the third part to the 24-player Nier Automata crossover alliance raid series will be included in patch 5.5. The subtitle to this part is being held as a secret, and Yoshida-san teased that Nier series creator Yoko Taro (who's been working on the raids) might have surprises in store. He also mentioned that they're calling this a third chapter to the raid series and not the final chapter--we're not sure what this could mean or if it hints at future content. We did get a teaser screenshot with what looks a lot like the a Seed of Destruction from Drakengard.

  14. Silicon Motion: PCIe 5.0 SSD Controller to Debut Next Year Just when you thought PCIe 4.0 x4 SSD's were fast with up to 8 GB/s of sequential read speed, PCIe 5.0 drives have emerged on the horizon that could come with up to 16 GB/s speeds. Silicon Motion said this week that it would start sampling its enterprise-grade SSD controllers with a PCIe Gen 5.0 interface in the second half of next year, which means that they will debut commercially in 2022. This is one of the first times that an SSD controller maker has mentioned a chip with a PCIe 5.0 interface, and even though the controller will debut in the server space, models for consumers will inevitably follow. No Rush for PCIe 5.0 SSDs? The PCIe 5.0 interface will increase data transfer speeds to 32 GT/s per lane, which will increase the total bandwidth provided by a PCIe x16 slot to ~64 GB/s, whereas a PCIe x4 slot can transfer up to ~16 GB/s. Increased transfer rates will be particularly beneficial for various bandwidth-hungry applications, like servers, high-end storage subsystems, and accelerators. Using the PCIe Gen 5 physical layer, various next-gen platforms will also support CXL and Gen-Z protocols designed specifically to connect CPUs with various accelerators and maintain memory and cache coherency at low latencies. The first platforms to support a PCIe 5.0 interface are Intel's 12th-Gen Alder Lake CPUs for client PCs, which are expected to debut in the second half of 2021, as well as the company's 4th Generation Xeon Scalable 'Sapphire Rapids' for data centers and supercomputers that is projected to launch in early 2022. In addition to PCIe 5.0, Sapphire Rapids will also support the CXL 1.1 protocol. So far, several companies have already announced the availability of PCIe 5.0 controllers and PHY IP, and some have demonstrated interoperability of their CXL-enabled PCIe 5.0 solutions with Intel's Sapphire Rapids or verification equipment, whereas Microchip even announced its PCIe 5.0 retimers and switches. However, as numerous developers of SSD controllers and platforms introduced their PCIe 4.0 platforms for servers in the second half of last year, including Kioxia, Microchip, Silicon Motion, SK Hynix, it doesn't seem like they will roll out any new enterprise-grade solutions in the foreseeable future. Of course, some companies tend to introduce next-gen SSDs ahead of competitors, but it does not look like there will be too many PCIe 5.0-supporting enterprise drives available next year, so SMI will be on time with its PCIe Gen 5 controller. The PCIe Gen 5 specification was finalized in mid-2019, around the same time when the first PCIe 4.0-supporting platforms, SSDs, and GPUs were launched. Back then, some thought that the PCIe 4.0 interface will have a short lifespan (because PCIe 5.0 was 'already there') and will not become truly po[CENSORED]r particularly in the data center space, as back then, the only server platform to feature PCIe 4.0 lanes was AMD's EPYC 7002-series 'Rome' that was not truly po[CENSORED]r at the time. As it turns out, while PCIe 5.0 will debut later this year, it does not look that it will immediately replace PCIe 4.0. SMI Mentions First PCIe 5.0 SSD Controller "With our new PCIe Gen5 enterprise SSD controllers sampling in the second half of next year, we are not expecting our enterprise SSD controller to be a material contributor to our $1 billion sales objective," said Wallace Kuo, chief executive of Silicon Motion, during a conference call with analysts and investors (via The Motley Fool). "We are planning on material enterprise SSD controller sales contribution only after 2023." Silicon Motion is a newbie on the market of enterprise SSD controllers. The company first entered China's enterprise SSD market in 2015 after acquiring Shannon Systems, a supplier of enterprise-grade PCIe SSD and storage arrays to Chinese hyperscalers. So far, SMI's enterprise SSD business has not really taken off and represents a fraction of its revenue. Still, the company clearly wants to be a part of the datacenter megatrend, so it will continue to invest in enterprise storage solutions. "We are excited about enterprise-grade PCIe Gen5 controller, which we will have taped out early next year and sample in the second half of 2022," said Kou. "We believe this will bring us a big momentum in coming to enterprise." The chief executive of Silicon Motion naturally did not touch upon technical specifications of the company's upcoming PCIe 5.0 enterprise SSD controller, but its latest SM8266 SoC supports NVMe 1.4, three dual-core Arm Cortex-R5 complexes, 16 NAND channels, and configurable LDPC ECC.

  16. New Tesla ‘yoke’ steering wheel is legal in Europe and UK The controversial new steering wheel design will be offered as an option on the recently unveiled facelift Model S and Model X alongside a conventional round wheel. At the time of the unveil, many questioned the legality of such a design outside of Tesla’s US home market. However, after the Sunday Times spoke to the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) and the Department for Transport (DfT), the latter pointed to the Economic Commission For Europe of the United Nations (UN/ECE) Regulation 79. This regulation exists to “establish uniform provisions for the layout and performance of steering systems fitted to vehicles used on the road”. It was originally put into place to regulate now-common ‘drive-by-wire’ steering systems, in which there's no mechanical link to the car's wheels. However, the regulation doesn't sti[CENSORED]te anywhere that a steering device must be a specific size or shape. In fact, the UK government’s MOT inspection manual lists - in section 2.2.2 - advice for testing a “steering column or forks and yokes” in cars and passenger vehicles. The only requirement is that whatever form of steering control must be sturdily attached and have minimal play. Despite this good news for Tesla, the EV manufacturer will likely find it difficult passing another new feature - the Tesla Arcade built-in games console - through UK regulations. This device allows use of wireless video-game controllers from any seat. However, the DfT told the Sunday Times: “By law, drivers can only use screens when viewing driving information related to the state of the vehicle or its equipment. Screens used for anything else should not be visible to the driver while the vehicles is being driven.” This means that even if a front passenger is playing a game, the ability for the driver to see it renders it illegal. It remains to be seen if either of these features will be offered on UK or European models when they're eventually exported.

  18. Myanmar coup: Teachers join growing protests against military A civil disobedience movement in Myanmar is gaining momentum, with teachers and students protesting against Monday's military coup. Demonstrators at a university in the biggest city, Yangon, chanted support for jailed leader Aung San Suu Kyi and wore red ribbons, her party's colour. Ms Suu Kyi and other leaders have been held since the coup on Monday. Earlier, the military detained another senior leader from her National League for Democracy (NLD) party. Ms Suu Kyi, who has not been seen in public since Monday, is under house arrest, according to her lawyer. He said he was seeking her unconditional release and that of the president, who was also detained, but he had been unable to meet them. Myanmar, which is also known as Burma, has remained mostly calm in the aftermath of the coup, which has plunged the South East Asian country into uncertainty. Myanmar coup: What is happening and why? Myanmar country profile On Friday afternoon, hundreds of teachers and students gathered outside Dagon University in Yangon, where they displayed the three-finger salute - a sign that has been adopted by protesters in the region to show their opposition to authoritarian rule. They chanted their support for Ms Suu Kyi and carried red flags. "We will not let our generation suffer under this kind of military dictatorship," Min Sithu, a student, told the AFP news agency. Where else have we seen the three-finger salute? 2px presentational grey line Social media focus for protests By Nyein Chan, BBC Burmese, Yangon The first reaction to the coup was shock and horror. But now people have had time to digest what is happening and are finding different ways to fight back. As the regime takes more steps to tighten its control, an increasing number of people are joining the leaderless civil disobedience campaign demanding a return of the democratically elected government. The military has blocked the most po[CENSORED]r social media platform, Facebook, but most people are still able to access it using virtual private networks - VPNs - and that's where lots of the protests are taking place. People here know very well the violent crackdowns the military is capable of, so that's why for now there are no widespread street protests. But there are other ways people can make their voices heard. The lecturers who took part in Friday's campus protests said they were doing it for the next generation. I have an 18-month-old child. I grew up under military rule and the economic sanctions that came as a result of it. I prayed that my son would grow up in a very different Burma. Now I am not so sure what his future will be like.

  20. Untitled Resident Evil Origin Movie Will Release This Summer Sony's next installment in the Resident Evil franchise finally has a release date. The untitled origin film will arrive on September 3, 2021--just seven months from now. Written and directed by Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down), the story takes place in 1998 in Racoon City, following the events of what can be described as "one fateful night." That really only means one thing: the escape of the T-Virus which turns a bunch of people into zombies. Production wrapped on the film back in December, as the official Resident Evil Twitter sent out an ominous image featuring white noise on a TV screen. There are plenty of familiar names in the movie if you're a longtime fan of the video game series. Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner) will play Claire Redfield, Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man and the Wasp) plays Jill Valentine, Robbie Amell (Upload) as Chris Redfield, Tom Hopper (The Umbrella Academy) as Albert Wesker, Avan Jogia (Zombieland: Double Tap) as Leon S. Kennedy, and Neal McDonough (Yellowstone) as William Birkin. Sony Pictures' Screen Gems will be distributing the movie domestically, so as of this writing, it will be in theaters. There have been six movies in the previous Resident Evil franchise, all written and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and starring Milla Jonovich. However, this upcoming untitled movie isn't the only Resident Evil content coming your way. Netflix is developing two TV shows: one live-action and one animated. There's also a demo available on PS5 for the upcoming game Resident Evil: Village, which contains sexy vampires.

  21. The Aurora 7 Is A Seven Screen Laptop Battlestation What if you need a mobile system with more than three screens? Well, Expanscape has developed a prototype of a laptop with as many as seven screens, and it is already selling the prototypes to interested customers. It also comes packed with an impressive amount of power on the compute side to match. The Aurora 7 Prototype indeed comes with four 17.3-inch monitors featuring a 4K resolution (two working in landscape, two in portrait mode) as well as three auxiliary 7-inch screens featuring a 1920 x 1200 resolution. All the monitors fold or swivel out of the primary chassis, making it a transformer of sorts, and no on-site assembly before deployment is necessary. The whole system weighs around 12 kilograms, so it is not easy to carry, but it is naturally easier to transport than a laptop along with six extra displays. With more of us working from home due to the pandemic, multi-display setups are becoming the norm and are widely used for a variety of applications. Setting a multi-monitor configuration at home or in an office is easy, and while attaching two more displays to a laptop is also possible, it gets slightly more complicated. Expanscape's Aurora 7 Prototype laptop computer is built for very particular applications and audiences in mind (such as security operations centers, data scientists, content creators) that traditionally use multi-display PCs, but who at times need to transport and deploy them quickly. The creators wanted their seven-screen laptop computer to be portable, structurally rigid, and capable of running demanding programs. As far as internal hardware is concerned, the Aurora 7 is powered by Intel's Core i9-9900K processor that is accompanied by 64GB of DDR4-2666 memory, Nvidia's GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card, two PCIe 3.0 x4 M.2 SSDs, one 2.5-inch MLC SSD, and a 2TB 7200RPM hard drive. The PC has all modern connectivity technologies, including Bluetooth, GbE, Wi-Fi, and USB. Since the Aurora 7 uses a fairly spacious chassis, the developer says that it can use different platforms, including AMD's Ryzen 9 3950X or Intel's Core i9-10900K. Among the impressive peculiarities of the Expanscape's Aurora 7 Prototype are two internal batteries. The primary internal battery features an 82Wh capacity and powers the system itself. The secondary internal battery has a 148Wh capacity and is used to power the screens. The battery life for the whole system is about 2 hours 20 minutes, but at high clocks under high loads, it will get lower. Technically, all of Expanscape's seven-screen Aurora 7 machines are just prototypes that do not look or feel like commercial products, yet the company can build them to order and sell to interested parties who agree so sign a contract and pay a hefty sum of money.

  22. Blue Marine selects SERTICA Fleet Management Software for eight vessels The European way of maintaining and managing a fleet has arrived in Mexico with yet another shipping company in the country investing in SERTICA. Blue Marine, one of the largest offshore services suppliers in Latin America, signed a contract with Logimatic to implement SERTICA Fleet Management software on eight of their vessels. The Mexican company, already a client of SERTICA, chose the software for its reliability and consistency. Also, because it reduces operational costs through streamlined and digitalized workflows. One of its key features, is that the user has access to a database with information about previous maintenance jobs, use of spare parts, planned maintenance projects and much more. The database also allows the user to get information about the ship and its maintenance from previous owners. Pablo Grez, SERTICA Regional Manager in Latin America explains “Taking over the SERTICA database means that Blue Marine does not need to start from scratch structuring all data, components, items and much more. They can easily adjust and continue the maintenance plans scheduled in SERTICA. The Analytics and Task List modules will without a doubt support Blue Marine in optimizing process flows and subsequent analysis.” Joiser Ramirez Conde, Fleet Superintendent at Blue Marine agrees and adds, “We know the software, we like it and are very confident on this new contract; our crew is familiar with the system and expect to have an easy transition.” Facts about Blue Marine Mexican leading company with over 20 years of experience. Specialized in services and construction to the offshore industry It has the largest fleet by tonnage in the country with different type of vessels, such as Tankers, Offshore Supply Vessels, FPSO, Maintenance and Construction. It is a company of Durandco Industrial Group, with more than 1200 employees in Mexico Source: Hanseaticsoft
