Wikipedia, which says it offers "the second draft of history", is one of the few surviving fact-checked sources of information in Russian since the crackdown intensified after Moscow sent its armed forces into Ukraine in February 2022. The Tagansky district court said it had fined Wikimedia RUB 800,000 (nearly Rs. 8 lakh). Russian news agencies in the courtroom said Wikimedia had been charged with failing to remove materials related to a song by the alternative rock band Psychea, or Psyshit, which has been officially designated "extremist". Russia has now fined Wikimedia around RUB 9 million (nearly Rs. 90 lakh) in the past year, the agencies said. Wikimedia did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The foundation's Russia chapter has previously said it believes other fines may be overturned, but that the number of cases against it may increase, given the number of articles on Wikipedia about the conflict. Russia has for years sought to launch a home-grown online encyclopedia, without a tangible result so far. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday and a Russian analogue was "absolutely necessary". "It would contain truly verified and accurate information, objective information," he said, "because we know that Wikipedia has many distortions, very many untruths, very many historical, factual and other mistakes." Russian domestic tech companies, led by entities controlled or associated with the state-owned gas giant Gazprom, have been sensing opportunities in Russia's growing digital isolation as foreign internet firms are blocked or quit Russia. But while Moscow has restricted access to Twitter and to Meta Platforms' flagships Facebook and Instagram, Wikipedia remains freely available.

Souce: Click here Microsoft is continuing to tinker with its new artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot Bing Chat, this time adjusting its personality so it’s less stubborn and more helpful. Bing Chat, which is powered by ChatGPT, garnered a lot of hype when it launched in March, allowing you to ask it all sorts of questions, and it would intelligently respond in a chat-like interface. Even better, you could ask it to create things, such as images or even code apps, and it would. However, if anyone has used it recently, you may have noticed that Bing Chat developed a bit of an attitude, and would refuse to create certain things. This is exactly what happened to me when I asked it to help me design a new operating system for an upcoming article – it stubbornly refused to help, despite quite happily doing so a few days earlier. Not only was this frustrating, but it also took a lot of the fun out of using Bing Chat. So, it’s good to see news (as reported by Neowin(opens in new tab)) that Microsoft is rolling out an update to address this. According to a tweet by Mikhail Parakhin, Microsoft's head of Advertising and Web Services, a new update is rolling out that “should see big reduction in the number of cases when Bing Chat refuses to create something (write code, for example).” More co-operative According to Parakhin, this update (known as Bing Chat v98) will roll out in two stages. The first will reduce the instances where Bing refuses to help create things, while the second stage will reduce ‘disengagements.’ I assume this refers to those, again frustrating, times when Bing Chat will consider a chat or task complete when it isn’t. Parakhin also responded to people asking about the new Bing Image Creator feature, which was recently introduced to allow users to create AI-generated art through Bing Chat, but which some people have found rather limited. Parakhin claims that this feature is rapidly improving. It's good to see Microsoft continue to improve Bing Chat – there’s a huge amount of potential here, and the company must be pleased that people are now actually interested in Bing. It certainly seems to have captured the public’s imagination in the way that rival Google’s Bard AI has not – and to keep us interested, Bing needs to keep evolving. So far, Microsoft appears to agree.

After announcing plans to stop supporting Steam for Windows 7 and 8, Valve today announced it will drop support for Macs running macOS 10.11 El Capitan and 10.12 Sierra. The company made the announcement in a short blog post on its support site. While the older versions of Windows will get dropped in Jan. 2024, the older macOS versions will get the boot earlier in Sept. 2023. Starting Sept. 1, 2023, the Steam Client will no longer run, and you'll have to update to macOS 10.13 High Sierra in order to play any games that run through Steam on your Mac. Valve is dropping support for macOS El Capitan and Sierra for the same reasons it's dropping support for Windows 7 and 8: because "core features" of Steam use an embedded version of Chrome, which won't work on these older operating systems. "In addition, future versions of Steam will require macOS feature and security updates only present in macOS 10.13 and above," the unsigned blog post reads. This change will probably affect far fewer users than the Windows announcement, as Macs aren't nearly as popular for PC gaming. In the March 2023 Steam Hardware Survey, macOS and OS X consisted of just 1.41% of systems running Steam — and of the majority of those Macs were already running macOS 13.2.1 Ventura, which is the latest version. In fact, the oldest version even captured in the survey was macOS 10.15.7, an update to Catalina, and consisted of less than 1% (of the 1.41% of macOS/OS X users). So, yeah — these changes are likely to affect very few people. Of the Macs in that survey, 54.88% were running systems with Apple Silicon, while the other 45.08% were still on Intel. El Capitan was released in 2015, with Sierra following in 2016. Security updates for those OS versions ended in 2018 and 2019, respectively. With free updates each year, there's little reason for Mac owners to not upgrade, as long as their system is still supported. Apple stopped supporting 32-bit applications in 2017, with macOS 10.13 High Sierra, which led to tons of Steam games becoming incompatible with macOS. That said, there's probably some people who will be affected by this announcement. But it looks like Valve is ready to modernize, even on this relatively minor platform.

A new press release(opens in new tab) and official site(opens in new tab) has the logo, a bunch of marketing bumpf about the glory of football, and the promise of a first detailed look at the retitled series in July. "Over the coming days, the EA Sports FC brand will debut in more than 100 matches across the biggest leagues in the world," warns EA. This is going to be the marketing blitz to end all marketing blitzes, and EA's signed up all of the world's major leagues including the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1, WSL, NWSL, CONMEBOL and more. In addition to this it's signed up individual teams and players who'll be repping the EA Sports FC life faithfully. The phrase EA has alighted on for this new era is "a fan-first future." Not quite sure what that means but it's the kind of lip-service that works in football, for the most part, and also slightly deflects from the endless wheelbarrows of cash being poured into this. The press release includes long quotes from various football suits about how wonderful EA Sports FC is going to be, which I'll spare you, but the masochists can find them here(opens in new tab). You thought the logo was just a logo? Think again sport. "The new brand takes its design inspiration directly from the beautiful game and a dominant shape in football culture that represents the sport in multiple dimensions, triangles." Triangles?!? Not, like, a ball? OK that's funny but EA does have a point, inasmuch as passing triangles are a key part of the game (often considered key to the Dutch 'total football' style of the 1970s), and it goes on to extend this even further: "from the isometric angles of our very first 8-bit experiences and the triangular polygons that make up every pixel of our most modern games, as well the iconic player indicator symbol that appears above every athlete in every match." Hmm. An important point to make here, which EA kind of dances around, is that players shouldn't be expecting a new game: This will be the kind of iterative improvement over last year's entry typical of the recent FIFA series, but of course that still means it'll be the best football game around by a country mile. One of the few concrete details included in this release was a reference to "the chemistry triangles that exist in Ultimate Team", FIFA's most lucrative mode by a distance, and while of course that was always going to return it does emphasise that, in the hands, this will be evolution rather than revolution. The end of FIFA as-was does make me weirdly melancholy(opens in new tab) because, cynicism aside, EA has done such a tremendous job at weaving this videogame series into the real-world sport. The FIFA games have felt for years now like an extension of whatever's going on in the sport and are embedded in the culture. I was at a match several months ago where one of Bath City's players absolutely skied a golden opportunity (sadly very common with the Romans) and some bloke on the terrace shouted "don't press circle so hard!" to chuckles all round. EA Sports FC's position and future success feels assured. FIFA, meanwhile, is all at sea. It reacted to the end of the licensing agreement like a jilted lover, with president Gianni Infantino declaring only a game with the FIFA name would be "THE BEST"(opens in new tab) (emphasis his) before going on to blow his own kneecaps off with some truly laughable tie-in efforts(opens in new tab) for the Qatar world cup.

Nokia, earlier this year, changed its logo to a more modern minimalistic design, after many years of sporting a familiar logo. The brand has recently launched several smartphones, including Nokia C32, Nokia C22, Nokia G22, Nokia C12 and Nokia C12 Pro. Now, Nokia has announced Pure UI, a new user interface for its forthcoming B2B and enterprise products. Notably, the Pure UI will not be available on Nokia smartphones manufactured by HMD Global. The Nokia Pure UI, according to the official website, has a distinct appearance with a sense of ease and minimalist design. The new Nokia Pure UI comes with a new design language. Although it won't be used on any Nokia smartphones, it will be available on all software UI developed or planned to be created in the upcoming future by Nokia. The brand claims that the style is meant to be consistent, versatile, and future-proof, and it has a clean, minimalistic appearance. There are several elements, beginning with layouts and recommendations, that define the whole appearance. The Nokia Pure typeface, which will be utilised throughout the UI, is a key component of the new look. The Pure UI introduced new icons based on different strokes, the width of which can be adjusted to meet the display specifications and functionality of a particular device. Smooth animations are also used when an element must draw the attention of the user. In addition, Nokia has created basic features that developers can use to quickly create consistent-looking screens. A dark mode is also supported in the UI, with components and symbols adapting their styles accordingly. Nokia Pure UI claims to offer robust elements that can be used to develop complex web-based dashboards. The interface is intended to be scaled from small wrist-worn screens to large wall-mounted display panels.

It's also become a day each year when PC hardware vendors can unleash their creativity and announce ridiculous products without repercussion. Over the years, we've seen some unique and hilarious inventions from hardware brands. Sometimes, the announcements are clearly hoaxes, but others are so well done that you may think it's real. So, following the annual tradition, we've compiled a small round-up of the most unusual and interesting April Fool's day hardware announcements. You'll love the Sapphire Top RX 7999 XTT Mega(opens in new tab) if you like overengineered graphics cards. The RDNA 3 graphics card comes out of Sapphire's trunk of unreleased graphics cards. The triple-slot graphics card has a trio of cooling fans and vibrant RGB lighting. It's on Windows and supports different gaming platforms. Equipped with a Full HD display, the ROG Ally flaunts a dual-fan cooling solution to run cool and silent in your hands. The ROG Ally is compatible with Asus' ROG XG Mobile eGPU, which employs a GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop GPU to take your gaming experience to another level. The manufacturer has launched the Aorus Cat Master, a cat bed that's 280mm wide that sits on top of your PC case. So, you know something bizarre was going on when NZXT tweeted(opens in new tab) what appeared to be an AI-generated render of the company's first alleged graphics card. It's a shame it was a joke since consumers could use another competitor in the graphics card market after EVGA's exit. The graphics card doesn't look half bad, sporting a beautiful, all-white exterior to match the company's motherboards. The dual-slot graphics card features a standard cooler with NZXT-branded two cooling fans. The rear I/O cover has a unique design flaunting a vent with a circular pattern, three DisplayPort outputs, and one HDMI port. Meanwhile, be quiet!(opens in new tab) has rolled out a press release (yes, an actual press release) announcing the company's Zero Wings AI fans. The bladeless fans (yes, you read that right) leverage the brand's Controlled Airflow Technology (CAT) design and FANOS AI technology that controls the Zero Wings AI's fan speed and airflow, depending on the environment. Thanks to the bladeless design, Zero Wings AI fans can direct your system's airflow in any direction. For example, if your graphics card is running too hot, the fans send a stream of air toward it. be quiet! claims that the Zero Wings AI's performance is equivalent to a standard 120mm fan spinning at 8,500 RPM. The advantage of the Zero Wings AI is that it emits zero noise. Hey, silence is literally built into be quiet's name, and if it works for Dyson(opens in new tab), why not for PCs? Razer has revealed the Razer Razer(opens in new tab), which the brand touts as the world's first gaming mouse that doubles as a razor for... shaving. Featuring Razer Chroma RGB, the Razer Razer wields 1,337 micro blades to provide a clean shave on even the most delicate skin. The razor shaves at 360 FPS (follicles per second), so gamers can remove the hair from their faces in record-breaking time. Silverstone(opens in new tab) has revealed the company's SST-FLP01-W and SST-FLP01-B cases that pay tribute to the PC cases from the '90s. Although Silverstone defines the case as white, it's more old-fashioned beige. Yes, there's even a Turbo button on the case. The SST-FLP01-W accepts Micro ATX, ATX, and even SSI-CEB motherboards. In addition, there's enough spacing for graphics cards up to 300mm in length, so the SST-FLP01-W should have no problems accepting today's best graphics cards. The SST-FLP01-W's most unique selling point is the two 5.25-inch floppy disk bays, which you don't see on cases anymore. So if you still have the original Doom stored away somewhere, now's the time to replay the iconic title. The SST-FLP01-W also has three 12cm cooling fans and USB Type-C support.

Google’s Bard AI has found itself at the center of controversy again, this time over allegations that the Bing rival was trained using data pulled from OpenAI’s ChatGPT. As you may be aware, ChatGPT is the power behind the throne of Bing AI, and the accusation of nefarious activities behind the scenes comes from a report by The Information(opens in new tab). We’re told that Jacob Devlin, a software engineer at Google – an ex-engineer, we might add, having departed the firm over this affair – claims that Google used ChatGPT data (scraped from the ShareGPT website, apparently) to develop Bard. Devlin notes that he warned Google against doing so, as this clearly went against OpenAI’s terms of service. According to the report, Google ceased using the mentioned data after the warnings from Devlin (who left Google to join OpenAI, we’re informed). Google denies any of this, though. A company spokesperson, Chris Pappas, told The Verge(opens in new tab): “Bard is not trained on any data from ShareGPT or ChatGPT.” Analysis: A denial amid some desperation There we have it, then – a clear denial from Google in no uncertain terms that nothing underhand was going on data-wise with Bard. And to be fair, there’s certainly no evidence that Bard’s answers are remotely like the ones given by ChatGPT. (Devlin had further warned that the alleged data hoovering could mean just that, and it’d be obvious enough what had gone on as a result). We suppose the trouble with this episode is that it very much feels like Google has rushed Bard to release – dropping clangers while doing so – as it was forced to play catchup with Microsoft’s Bing AI. Given that the latter is now successfully pushing search engine adoption to Bing, already at this early stage, all this could make it easy enough for some to believe that Google might be getting a bit desperate with tactics behind the scenes. Whether or not the tale about poached data is true – we’ll take Google’s word that it isn’t – the report still makes an interesting revelation that Google’s Brain AI group is now working with AI firm DeepMind (both of these existing under the Alphabet umbrella, the parent company). DeepMind has seemingly been recruited into the mix to swiftly hone and power up Bard, and it’s notable because the two AI outfits are big rivals and are very much being forced to collaborate on this. This again sketches a picture of a rather desperate scramble to get Bard steadier on its feet, while Microsoft’s Bing AI keeps getting updated with new features at a fair old rate of knots. (Although fresh rumblings about one of the potential next ‘features’ for the Bing chatbot have us very concerned, it has to be said). You may also recall alarm bells being rung on the privacy front when Bard itself made an apparent revelation that it used internal Gmail data for training, again prompting Google to tell us that this is not the case and that the bot got things wrong. Bard getting things wrong, of course, is very much part of a bigger issue.
