Intel will allegedly place $4 billion worth of orders with TSMC in 2024 to fab 3nm CPU tiles, per a report from semiconductor analyst Andrew Lu (via eeNews). 2025 will also see a large number of Intel chips produced at TSMC, with orders totaling $10 billion. Lunar Lake is allegedly Intel's first processor to have its CPU cores fabbed at an external foundry, and Lu believes Intel will become increasingly dependent on TSMC in the future. TSMC's 3nm node is the company's latest, and right now, it's primarily known for being the process that powers Apple's latest M3 and A17 processors. However, the analyst claims Intel will become TSMC's second-largest 3nm customer, displacing AMD, while Apple remains the largest. By the end of 2024, the analyst claims Intel will have 15,000 3nm wafers per month coming in from TSMC, and that figure will increase to 30,000 in 2025.Those figures might seem strange considering the order values: 15,000 wafers per month in 2024 is worth $14 billion, while double the wafers would only be worth $10 billion in 2025. Assuming the figures are indeed accurate, it could be down to declining prices for 3nm wafers over time. Nodes tend to get cheaper over time due to higher yields stemming from process maturity, so Intel's ability to order more for less might not be contradictory. Lu claims that there's no going back for Intel and that the company will rely heavily on TSMC's foundries in the future. There are apparently many financial and economic benefits for Intel to work with TSMC, but perhaps the most obvious advantage is increased production capacity. Intel's production capabilities are massive but perhaps not massive enough to support the company's CPUs, GPUs, and third-party manufacturing. That's why Intel has outsourced lower-value portions of its production to external foundries for years. Intel's increased reliance on TSMC isn't new, though. Arc Alchemist GPUs are fabbed at TSMC, Ponte Vecchio uses TSMC-made chips, and Meteor Lake employs TSMC's 5nm and 6nm nodes for three of its four tiles. It's also rumored that upcoming Battlemage and Celestial GPUs will be fabbed at TSMC, and upcoming tile CPUs will presumably continue using at least some TSMC-fabbed tiles. Intel has outsourced part of its production to external foundries for decades, and the benefits outweigh the negatives. Additionally, the company is in a better technological position than when it struggled to get 10nm chips out the door.   8. You know those dystopian notions of seas boiling over thanks to climate change? Well, China has a neat idea to accelerate a process which is already giving us the warmest sea surface temps on record. Heating up the oceans directly with computers. OK, that's rather facetious; there have been numerous studies into such an endeavour, with Microsoft running a similar setup for two years near the Orkney Islands just off Scotland with some ecological success. But China has reportedly begun construction on what's claimed to be the world's first undersea data center. Allegedly, once complete the facility will have the computing power of "six million conventional personal computers." It's unclear exactly what that means or what the hardware involved comprises. But it will be made of of no fewer than 100 of the huge looking "nodes" pictured above, each of which weighs an incredible 1,300 tons. However, you slice it, then, it's a lot of kit being submerged 35m under water off the coast of Sanya, Hainan province, China.Central to the entire premise is using sea water as the primary coolant. It's said that this will save a hefty 122 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually on cooling compared with a conventional on-land data center.It would be interesting to know how the net warming footprint compares between this approach and electrically powered air-cooling solutions of existing data centers. The thermal impact of a single server farm would just be a drop in the ocean, if you'll pardon the pun. Though if there were thousands of such nodes that might be a different matter.This isn't the first time we've heard of computer servers being dumped in the sea for cooling purposes. But this Chinese installation does seem to be on a rather unprecedented and epic scale. Exactly how practical all this is, well, that's an open question. Swapping out dead CPUs, SSDs or whole servers would, we assume, be off the cards with this kind of installation. In the Microsoft experiment which finished in 2020 it sealed the undersea chamber, filling it with dry nitrogen which made for a far less corrosive atmosphere than an oxygen-rich one, improving reliability over a land-based equivalent. There's no indication here that the new server farm is doing the same thing, but the nodes or modules are apparently each designed to run for 25 years and perhaps the very long term idea is they can be individually recovered and serviced.   9. Minister of State for the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia and United Nations, Lord (Tariq) Ahmad of Wimbledon, visited Morocco from 8 to 9 May 2023. He attended the fourth UK-Morocco bilateral Strategic Dialogue, following and complementing the UK-Morocco Association Council held in Rabat on 16 February. During his visit, Lord Ahmad visited and prayed at the iconic Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, as well as meeting British business representatives based there. On 9 May, Lord Ahmad co-chaired the ministerial session of the annual UK-Morocco Strategic Dialogue with host, Morocco’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr Nasser Bourita. As reflected in their Joint Declaration, the ministers reviewed the deepening collaboration between the UK and Morocco and identified priorities for the next year, under the 4 pillars of cooperation: political, economic, security and defence, and education and culture. This collaboration includes growing bilateral cooperation in the health and agricultural sectors, as well as on climate, energy and sustainable finance. The Ministers signed a ‘Strategic Cooperation Framework on Climate action, Clean energy and Green growth’. It also includes: *ongoing exchanges of expertise, such as the joint defence exercises, ‘Jebel Sahara’ and ‘African Lion’, both held in 2022 * collaboration between law enforcement agencies on border security, hostage negotiations, and counter-terrorism efforts The ministers also discussed regional and international issues of common interest.   10. India added 664 animal species to its faunal database in the year 2022. These comprise 467 new species and 197 new records [species found in India for the first time]. The country also added 339 new plant taxa – 186 taxa that are new to science and 153 taxa as new distributional records from the country in 2022. The details of new discoveries and new records were released by Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav in Kolkata on July 1.The faunal discoveries have been compiled in a publication by Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) titled Animal Discoveries - New Species and New Records 2023, whereas floral discoveries are contained in Plant Discoveries 2022 published by the Botanical Survey of India (BSI).Among the major fauna species discovered are three new species and one new record of mammals; two new records of birds; 30 new species and two new records of reptiles; six new species and one new record of amphibia; and 28 new species and eight new records of fish. The mammal species discovered include two species of bats – Miniopterus phillipsi, a long-fingered bat, and Glischropus meghalayanus, a bamboo-dwelling bat – both from Meghalaya. Sela macaque (Macaca selai), a new macaque species discovered in the western and central Arunachal Pradesh and named after the Sela Pass, is also among the highlights of Animal Discoveries 2022.The new records include Macaca leucogenys, a white-cheeked macaque earlier found in Modog, southeastern Tibet, and sighted in India for the first time in 2022 in West Siang, Arunachal Pradesh. The list also includes Ficedula zanthopygia, the yellow-rumped flycatcher, earlier known from Mongolia, Transbaikal, southern China, Korea, western Japan, and found last year in Narcondam Island of the Andaman archipelago. The maximum number of new faunal discoveries has been of invertebrates with 583 species, while vertebrates constitute 81 species. Insects dominate among invertebrates with 384 species, whereas fish dominated among vertebrates, followed by reptiles, amphibia, mammals and aves.In 2022, the maximum new discoveries were recorded from Kerala. As many as 82 animal species new to science and 15 new records were from Kerala, which contributes to 14.6% of the new species and new records. Karnataka followed with 64 new species and 24 new records accounting for 13.2%. Tamil Nadu saw 71 new discoveries and 13 new records contributing to 12.6% of all the new discoveries and new records in the country. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands contributed to about 8.4% of the discoveries, whereas 7.6 % discoveries were from West Bengal and 5.7% from Arunachal Pradesh. With the new discoveries and new records, the fauna diversity of the country increased to 1,03,922. Speaking at the launch of these publications, Mr. Yadav said that work done by the ZSI is critical to the faunal diversity of the country. “We must protect the diversity for our own sake,” he said.   11. King Mohammed VI has named Samira Sitail as ambassador to France, filling a post that has laid empty for months amid a diplomatic crisis between Rabat and Paris. The announcement of Samira Sitail’s nomination on Thursday came as something of a surprise since she has no background in diplomacy. The 59-year old was head of news then deputy director general at Moroccan public broadcasting channel 2M. She takes over from Mohamed Benchaaboum whose duties were terminated on 19 January without a successor being named. While Sitail’s CV is very different from career diplomats, her high-level experience in the media could serve her well in her new diplomatic role. “It’s an unusual nomination, but which most probably corresponds to a certain logic, because Morocco wants to make its voice in France more audible,” journalist and political scientist Abdellah Tourabi told Le Monde daily. “She knows the media, knows how to talk to them and has a network in the press and culture that goes beyond the purely political sphere.” Outspoken Sitail was born in France and holds dual nationality, but is not well known here. However she gained a certain notoriety for her comments following the 8 September earthquake in the region of Marrakech, which killed close to 3,000 people. Macron urges Morocco to accept French aid as death toll nears 3,000 Interviewed by BFM television she slammed the suggestion by some French media that Morocco had rejected France's offer of help in favour of the UK and Spain. “It’s very serious to say that Morocco refuses a country’s help, it’s even a call for Moroccan people to revolt" against their government and the monarchy, she said, underlying the kingdom's sovereignty. Tense relations Sitail takes over at a time when relations between Rabat and Paris are at a low point. They've been under strain since Macron tried to get closer to Algeria, which broke off diplomatic relations with Morocco in 2021, citing "hostile acts". Morocco has criticised France for not following the US and Israel in recognising its sovereignty over the Western Sahara. Morocco's king thanks Israeli PM for backing claim on Western Sahara Relations have also been soured through the 2020 Pegasus spywhere investigation which claimed that Morocco's intelligence services had used Israeli cellphone software to spy on several French public figures, possibly including Macron. Last year France slashed the number of visas granted to Moroccans by half and local media have reported that despite the resumption of consular services, people were still experiencing delays in appointments and visa applications were rejected without justification.   17. Remember actor Kumail Nanjiani who starred in the Silicon Valley television show? Handsome, sure, but his narrow build and ill-fitting clothes made sense for someone who stayed inside all day coding a data compression algorithm. There were even jokes about how unattractive he was, poor guy. A few years after the show's premiere, Najiani was cast in one of the lead roles in Marvel's Eternals movie adaptation, almost against type. Like countless stars before him (Chris Pratt, Brie Larson, Hugh Jackman), he worked with Hollywood trainers and dietitians to dramatically transform his physique, so much so that he landed the cover of Men's Health, bulging bicep vein and capped shoulders on full display. That's what came to mind when we met the Mercedes-AMG CLE53, a car that could provide a lot more appeal than a BMW M440i or an Audi S5. The folks at Mercedes-Benz introduced the CLE-Class in July 2023 as a replacement to coupe and cabriolet versions of the C- and E-Class, which means the CLE53 takes the place of the outgoing C43 and E53 coupes. The standard version of the slinky new two-door look elegant if a bit understated, and from behind the wheel it clearly prioritizes comfort and quietude over driving engagement. As is the case with most vehicles that wear the three-pointed star, that's where the folks in Affalterbach come in. The first change we noticed was the result of the CLE's body-building regimen. This AMG-modified coupe is 2.3 inches wider at the front and 3.0 inches wider in the back, which makes for a striking presence when you see it in person. This isn't some tacked-on butt implant and shoulder pad situation either, either—the widened body shell looks like the result of lifting heavy and drowning in protein shakes. Rad wheels, too. AMG also installs a creased power-domed hood, tweaked front fascia treatment, and circular quad exhaust finishers. Buyers can further augment the transformation with a AMG Performance Studio package (pictured) that adds additional aerodynamic touches including a more pronounced trunk lid spoiler and rear diffuser. For even more aggression, seek one of two blackout AMG Night packages or either AMG Carbon Fiber package. Thankfully, AMG has blessed the CLE-Class with the strength of an amateur powerlifter to match its newfound muscle mass. This isn't some bonkers plug-in hybrid four-cylinder, either, but rather a combination of old-school grunt and modern training techniques. Folks who shell out for the CLE53 get a version of the mild-hybrid 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six that's included in the CLE450. Difference is, the AMG version uses an electric supercharger improve engine response across the rev range and bump output to 443 hp and 413 lb-ft (or 443 lb-ft with overboost), decent but not world-changing bumps over the non-AMG and outgoing E53 I-6s or the previous-gen C43's twin-turbo V-6. We'd be remiss not to note the AMG powertrain, including its wet-clutch nine-speed automatic, is notably more powerful and technically impressive than those from its BMW and Audi competitors. That said, those peers have the advantage of motivating less weight. More Than A Nice Body Of course, the AMG experience is more than just engine and aesthetics. The folks from Affalterbach need to do more than produce a more powerful CLE to properly compete with the M440i and S5 Coupe. Every CLE53 is fitted with AMG Ride Control suspension, which combines steel springs with dampers that continually adjust to the road surface. Drivers can choose Comfort, Sport, or Sport+ damper mapping via a small round digital display mounted to the dual split-spoke steering wheel or through the central infotainment screen. Variable AWD is also standard, and it's a rear-biased system that completely decouples the front axle in situations that don't require additional traction at the front end. The driver also has multiple stability control settings to further bias torque to the rear. Unlike the C43 and E53 it replaces, the CLE53 comes standard with rear steering, a feature that isn't available in either of its German peers. The system angles the rear wheels opposite of the fronts below 60 mph to aid maneuverability (tighter turning circle in parking lots, rotation in tight, fast corners) and steers with the front tires at higher speeds for superior stability. Rear steer aggression varies depending on the drive mode. Folks who want to push the CLE53 to its limits (and are impatient for the likely upcoming CLE63) will want to tick the box for the AMG Dynamic Plus package. That's the only way to unlock the previously 63-exclusive Race drive mode, which delivers maximum aggression and has a Drift mode function that fully deactivates traction and stability control to allow for smokey tail-out hoonery. Folks eager to get behind the wheel of AMG's new muscle coupe won't have to wait long. If you're interested, wait until these cars hit dealers in summer 2024 so you can take a test drive before deciding between the CLE53 and a BMW M440i or an Audi S5. As for price, AMG has kept its lips tight, but we can make an educated guess. The 2023 AMG C43 started just shy of $64,000 and the E53 set buyers back a little over $85,000 if they went light on the options. Split the difference and add a bit on top to account for inflation (and a bit of corporate greed) and you should be able to score a CLE53 for under $80K.
