  1. The Braves of Margarita managed to be strong to withstand the great offense of the Sharks, whom they beat in eleven innings 6 runs by 4 at the Ciudad Universitaria Stadium in Caracas to reach their 10th win of the year. The Islanders placed Osmer Morales on the mound, who appeared for 4.0 episodes in which he allowed a couple of earned runs, including five hits, and also fanned four opponents. For their part, the Sharks sent Manuel Olivares, who in 4.1 innings allowed only one run. Margarita's team managed to even the game with a three-run rally in the fifth episode, and they managed to tie it again in the seventh stage with an RBI single by the always-yielding Edgar Durán, which sent the game to extra innings. In the eleventh chapter, Margarita punished Sam Bordner and the "Grinder" Pedro Rodríguez, who allowed two earned runs that would seal the Braves' victory. The victory was for Dedgar Jiménez (1-0), the defeat for Pedro Rodríguez (0-1), the rescue for Carlos Navas (5). The greateliga Edward Olivares stood out with the wood by hitting 5-2 with a pair of doubles and an RBI, while, for La Guaira, Wilson García connected 4-2, driven and ticket received https://meridiano.net/beisbol/beisbol-venezolano/lvbp-bravos-supera-a-tiburones-en-entradas-extras-2023111523370/amp
  2. Bernardo Arévalo's rise to the top of power in Guatemala has become an obstacle course that even his broad electoral triumph did not completely eliminate. After being elected Guatemalan president in a runoff election on August 20 with 60.9% of support and with an anti-corruption speech, Arevalo has denounced an attempted "coup d'état" to prevent him from taking office on January 14. This 65-year-old sociologist and diplomat denounces that attempts to circumvent the electoral results by corrupt public officials include the suspension of the legal personality of the Semilla Movement, the progressive party co-founded by him. The Public Prosecutor's Office claims that there are irregularities in the constitution of the president-elect's party. Arévalo specifically points to Attorney General Consuelo Porras, whom he asks to resign after she ordered the Supreme Electoral Tribunal to be raided alleging alleged anomalies in the elections won by Arévalo. Porras has been included by the United States in a list of corrupt and undemocratic actors for her controversial management, but she has the backing of the current president, Alejandro Giammattei. The conflict generated protests in recent weeks in Guatemala in favor of Arevalo, who was surprised in the elections and will become the most progressive president since the return to democracy almost 40 years ago “They are fabricating causes to try to criminalize different actors. I have no doubt that they can do it against me and others,” Arevalo says in an interview with BBC Mundo. The following is a summary of the telephone dialogue with this expert in conflict resolution, who was elected deputy in 2019 shortly after entering politics and is the son of Juan José Arévalo, considered the first democratically elected president in Guatemala. You have said that there seems to be a “slow-motion coup d'etat” in Guatemala to prevent your inauguration on January 14th. Can you identify who specifically is seeking to prevent you from taking office as president? It has been very clear that the political persecution against the electoral process, which has been extended even to the judges of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, is being carried out by the Public Prosecutor's Office: the Attorney general of the Republic with prosecutors in her charge. Among them, the special prosecutor Rafael Curruchiche. It is a political persecution that is carried out in an absolutely illegal way, violating constitutionally established competences. And it is through this means that they are trying to violate the po[CENSORED]r will freely expressed in the elections. You have denounced that these officials you mention do not act on their own behalf but defend the interests of others… In Guatemala we have suffered in the last two decades a process of co-optation of state institutions by a criminal political elite that, organizing into political parties, went on to assault the city halls, the Congress of the Republic and other spaces of the State. https://www.bbc.com/mundo/articles/cjmp32w4p4ko
  3. The Israeli army reported that it is carrying out a "precise and targeted operation against Hamas" inside the Al Shifa hospital, the largest in the Gaza Strip, which houses hundreds of patients in a critical situation and where thousands of people are taking refuge. In a statement on social media, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the operation is "based on intelligence information and an operational necessity." They assured that their forces "include medical teams and Arabic speakers, who have received specific training to prepare for this complex and sensitive environment" and that the intention is that "no harm will be caused to civilians who Hamas uses as human shields." They also called on “all Hamas terrorists present at the hospital to surrender.” The IDF said it had recently informed the Gaza authorities that all military activity inside the hospital had to end, but that it did not. Hamas denied using the hospital for its operations and called for an international committee to inspect it. In a statement, he called the actions of Israeli forces a "war crime," a "moral crime" and a "crime against humanity." He added that Israel was attacking a civilian center and not military installations. The BBC was not immediately able to verify the information provided by the IDF. Inside the hospital Thousands of civilians, including patients and medical staff, are taking shelter in and around the hospital. An eyewitness inside the Al Shifa hospital told the BBC early Wednesday that Israeli soldiers "fired a smoke bomb" inside the hospital "which caused people to suffocate." "I saw the soldiers enter the specialized surgery department," witness Khader Al-Zaanoun said. "I saw six tanks inside the hospital and more than a hundred commando soldiers, they entered the main emergency department, some of the soldiers were masked and were shouting in Arabic 'don't move, don't move'," he added. A journalist who is also at the hospital told that the Israeli forces are going room by room, floor by floor, interrogating everyone - both the staff and the patients - and are accompanied by doctors and people who speak Arabic. People who have taken refuge in the medical center have been forced to gather in the courtyard and some are being subjected to security checks. He adds that the Israeli army has "absolute control" and that no shooting is taking place. A spokesman for the Gaza Health Ministry said Israel informed them that it would "attack the Al Shifa hospital complex in the coming minutes," according to the Al Jazeera news network. Ashraf al-Qidra said Gaza officials had informed the Red Cross about the warning. The World Health Organization warned on Monday that the situation in the hospital is deteriorating rapidly and, according to some reports, up to 200 bodies were buried in a mass grave. People are dying after vital hospital equipment failed due to power outages, the centre's director has said. Dozens of premature babies and 45 kidney patients who need dialysis cannot be treated properly due to the lack of electricity, a WHO spokesman said on Monday. Rejection of the United States "We don't support attacking a hospital from the air and we don't want to see a hospital shooting where innocent, defenseless, sick people, trying to get the medical care they deserve, get caught in the crossfire," a White House National Security Council spokesman said. He also reiterated the request made by President Biden last Tuesday that hospitals and patients should be protected. On the other hand, it became known that US President Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Netanhayu had a telephone conversation. In a statement, the White House said the two leaders "discussed at length the ongoing efforts to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas, including many children and several Americans." The raid comes just hours after the United States said, for the first time, that its own intelligence supported Israel's claims that Hamas had buried a command center under Al-Shifa hospital, a claim consistently rejected by the ruling group in Gaza. Hamas has blamed the White House, saying the US president is, along with Israel, "fully responsible" for the attack. He said the US intelligence comments had provid ed a "green light" for Israel to launch its attack. https://www.bbc.com/mundo/articles/ce5pgjp8064o
  4. The Sharks came out of a bad run and hope to continue with the winning rhythm for the rest of the week In the first change, the moves by the management of Tiburones de La Guaira are going well, because today they managed to start the week with the pide derecho and cut a bad streak of four consecutive defeats. The teams led by Edgardo Alfonso took advantage of a tremendous six-point rally in the bottom of the sixth chapter, to beat Caribes de Anzoátegui, with a final score of 7-3, after being down for the entire first part of the clash. The offensive figure of the Litoralenses was the former major league Ehire Adrianza, who brought out all his power with his third home run of the campaign, also got a double and scored two streaks. On this occasion, the defense of the Orientals did not collaborate with their pitchers, after accumulating up to four defensive mistakes, but the one who ended up finally staying with the setback was reliever José Torres (1-4), while the lauro went to Carlos Suniaga (3-0). With this victory, the Escualos were with a record of 8-11, on the other hand, the "Eastern Tribe" left its record at 6-11, occupying the last place in the table next to Tigres de Aragua (8-13). https://meridiano.net/beisbol/beisbol-venezolano/lvbp-un-gran-rally-en-el-sexto-necesito-tiburones-para-salir-de-la-mala-racha-ante-caribes-2023111422160/amp
  5. The U.S. House of Representatives has approved President Mike Johnson's bill to prevent a government shutdown. It passed on a bipartisan basis by a vote of 336 to 95, 209 of which came from the Democrats. The bill was opposed by 93 Republicans and two Democrats. The Senate will have to approve the bill by Friday. The two-phase plan extends funding for priorities such as military construction, veterans affairs, transportation, housing and the Department of Energy until Jan. 19. The rest of the government - everything not covered by the first phase — would be funded until February 2. The proposal does not include additional aid for Israel or Ukraine. President Joe Biden is willing to sign the government funding bill that passed in the House if it is approved by the Senate, a White House official said Tuesday. "If it passes the Senate, the president will sign this continuing resolution that maintains current funding levels and has no harmful political clauses," the official said. Beyond the pressing fight over government funding, the official also called on House Republicans to abandon "partisan and extreme appropriations bills" and work with Democrats on year-round appropriations bills. The official also called on Congress to approve funding for Israel, Ukraine and border security. "Going forward, House Republicans need to stop wasting time on extreme, partisan appropriations bills that rip up the bipartisan agreement that two-thirds of them voted for and instead work quickly with Democrats on year-round appropriations bills," the official said. "Congress must also address urgent national security and domestic needs, including funding for Israel, Ukraine, humanitarian assistance, border security, WIC, and other critical priorities that have b ipartisan support." https://cnnespanol.cnn.com/2023/11/14/camara-representantes-ee-uu-aprueba-proyecto-ley-evitar-cierre-gobierno-trax/
  6. This is what Iran's influence is like in the war between Israel and Hamas 2:40 Iran's president attends a Saudi summit and says the meeting is to "save the Palestinians" Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi is in the Saudi capital Riyadh for a major summit on the war between Israel and Hamas, where Arab leaders are pushing for an end to the conflict. This is the first trip by an Iranian leader to Saudi Arabia in 11 years, after the two countries re-established diplomatic relations last March. Israel-Hamas war, live: Deaths and attacks in Gaza, news and more Raisi shook hands with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS), heir to the Saudi throne and the country's de facto ruler. Speaking at the summit, Raisi said all the attendees had gathered there on behalf of the Islamic world to "save the Palestinians." "We have gathered here today to discuss the Islamic world's approach to the Palestinian cause, where we have witnessed the worst crimes in history ... Today is a historic day in the heroic defense and support of the Al-Aqsa Mosque," he added. Raisi said Gaza's history is a "struggle between two axes" and the world must determine which side it is on, "on the side of the nobility or on the side that destroys human generations." The Iranian president criticized the United States for its support for the Israeli offensive and said that Washington is "the main partner in these crimes." In his opening remarks, MBS said the Kingdom "categorically rejects" the war the Palestinians are being subjected to. "This summit is being held in exceptional and painful circumstances," he said. "We categorically reject this brutal war that our brothers and sisters are being subjected to in Palestine... we renew our demand for an immediate cessation of military operations." The president of the Palestinian Autonomous Government, Mahmoud Abbas, said that the United States "is responsible for the absence of a political solution," due to its influence over Israel. Syria's leader is also attending the summit Raisi's attendance at the summit is significant amid speculation that Hezbollah – the Iran-backed Islamist movement with one of the most powerful paramilitary forces in the Middle East – could become a wildcard player in the war and trigger a wider regional conflict. Hezbollah has become increasingly allied with Hamas since the war in Syria ended. Hamas leaders have met with Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah several times over the past year, and the Gaza-based group's deepening connections with Iran are widely known. Since Israel's war with Hamas broke out, Hezbollah has unequivocally supported Palestinian militants. He has sponsored demonstrations in support of Palestinian groups and roundly condemned Israel's large-scale airstrikes on Gaza. A significant number of Arab leaders will be attending this Saturday's emergency meeting, titled Joint Arab Islamic Extraordinary Summit. The summit is being organized by Saudi Arabia in response to the "unprecedented circumstances in Gaza," according to a statement issued by the Saudi Foreign Ministry. The meeting is designed to discuss ways to stop the "Israeli aggression against Gaza," according to an Arab League statement ahead of the summit. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad also arrived at the summit, a further sign of Syria's reintegration among Arab states, following his participation in a regional meeting in May. https://cnnespanol.cnn.com/2023/11/11/presidente-iran-cumbre-saudita-para-salvar-a-los-palestinos-trax/
  7. The Sharks hope to improve their records from the next few days counting on top arms among their openers This Tuesday begins a new week in the Creole ball and each of the organizations is announcing the arms that will open each of their challenges in the coming days, this time the Sharks of La Guaira overtook their arms. Those led by Edgardo Alfonso apparently do not have all their pitchers defined, because they only announced the three pitchers of the games to be held between Tuesday and Thursday, leaving the other half of the week unknown. According to an information issued by La Prensa salada, the one responsible for taking the ball this Tuesday, for Tiburones is Ricardo Pinto, who must face the Caribs offense of Anzoátegui. Likewise, the young right-hander Manuel Olivares wants to put his erratic first start of the season behind him on Wednesday, November 15, when he challenges to Bravos de Margarita. For his part, the grandeliga Eliéser Hernández will debut on Thursday against the Tigres de Aragua. So far, these are the only pitchers confirmed, to open in the next six days by the Litoralenses, even with the dispute of who will be in charge between David Davalillo Jr. and Gunnar Kines to open on Friday to Bravos de Margarita, to let the other challenge to Navegantes del Magallanes on Saturday. https://meridiano.net/beisbol/beisbol-venezolano/lvbp-asi-va-la-rotacion-de-tiburones-de-la-guaira-para-esta-semana--2023111320140/amp
  8. The protests have already spread to more than 75 cities. For the sixth consecutive day, protests, curfews, looting and anger are shaking the United States. From one extreme to the other: from New York to Los Angeles, from Florida to Seattle and even the vicinity of the White House. The demonstrations, which initially began in Minneapolis after George Floyd, a 46-year-old African-American, died after a policeman pressed his neck with his knee for more than 8 minutes, have spread to more than 75 cities across the country. For almost a week, marches protesting police brutality against African Americans have continued to turn into clashes with police, burning of cars and violent acts. To try to contain the situation, local authorities decreed curfews in more than 40 cities and in 15 states deployed the National Guard, the reserve military force that the U.S. uses for emergency situations. According to Darnell Hunt, professor of sociology and African-American studies at the University of California at Los Angeles, this week's riots in the United States are the most serious reported in the country since 1968, when Martin Luther King Jr. he was murdered. And, in his opinion, the way the police have responded with an "increase in their aggressiveness" may lead to worsening the situation. "Deploying the National Guard, using rubber bullets, tear gas and pepper spray, these are a variety of police tactics that can exacerbate an already tense situation," he said. The demonstrations by thousands of people take place a few days after the US began to reopen after being hit by the coronavirus pandemic, which has left more than 100,000 people dead there and while social distancing rules remain in force. 9. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City "no longer functions as a hospital." The director-general of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, indicated that “there is constant shooting and shelling" in the surroundings of the building, which "exacerbated the already critical circumstances." "Tragically, the number of patient deaths has increased significantly. Unfortunately, the hospital is no longer operating as a hospital. The world cannot remain silent while hospitals, which should be safe havens, are transformed into scenes of death, devastation and despair," the official said. Gaza's Hamas-run health Ministry says more than 2,300 people are inside Al-Shifa, including patients, medical staff and displaced people. For its part, the Israeli army has reiterated that it is "ready to help" evacuate dozens of vulnerable babies from the hospital, and denies having attacked it during the fighting against Hamas. The WHO acknowledged on Sunday that it had lost communication with its contacts at the hospital and expressed "grave concern" for the safety of staff and patients there. The Israeli military has denied the accusations of attacking Al-Shifa, but maintains that there have been clashes with Hamas fighters in the area. An Israeli army spokesman said it was agreed to evacuate the newborns to "a safer hospital" on Sunday, after doctors said four had died and 36 others were in danger. In a post by X, the spokesperson urges people to move to the southern Gaza Strip. The BBC's Nick Beake, a journalist in Jerusalem, reports that the fighting - and stories of evacuees being shot - make many inside the hospital feel that any attempt to get out is fraught with danger. Heavy fighting continued overnight Sunday in the northern Gaza Strip as Israel's ground invasion continues. Aid groups say the ongoing fighting makes any attempt to use evacuation routes extremely dangerous. There are 36 newborns in the hospital who need intensive care treatment. The hospital doctors say they are afraid that the newborns could die. The charity Medical Aid for the Palestinians says that without ambulances, the necessary equipment or a hospital to transfer the premature babies to, “there is no indication of how to be able to evacuate them safely." https://www.bbc.com/mundo/articles/c3g2wk0gdpyo

  11. There was a time, not too long ago, when the interest of the main players of each organization, especially those who made a living in the Major Leagues, in playing in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League (LVBP) was questioned. Low economic motivation, loss of level on the circuit and even lack of affection for their jerseys were some of the arguments of the fans in their attempt to find a response to the absence of several of their favorite players, particularly in the first weeks of each season. So far, 2023-2024 has been an injection of hope for all lovers of the national pastime. From Zulia to Puerto La Cruz, passing through Lara, Caracas, La Guaira, Maracay and Valencia, the current LVBP competition has had stars everywhere. In less than four weeks of activities, local baseball fans have been able to enjoy the skills of Jackson Chourio, the best Venezuelan prospect in the country and the second in all the majors currently, according to MLB Pipeline experts. Osleivis Basabe, who debuted in the big tent with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2023, and Simón Muzziotti, who did the same with the Philadelphia Phillies last year, are Chourio's teammates in the Eagles, as well as veterans of great renowned on the circuit such as Alí Castillo, Jesús Sucre, Alex Romero, Ángel Reyes and Silvino Bracho, among others. Bravos de Margarita, which is playing its home games between Caracas and Macuto, has had veteran Félix Doubront early in its rotation, while the offense is led by major leaguer Carlos Pérez, of the Chicago White Sox, and other pieces with recent experience on the highest stage such as Wilson Ramos, Breyvic Valera and Ramón Flores. St. Louis Cardinals power prospect Moisés Gómez, fresh off his second straight 30-plus home run season in the minors, is also under the command of manager José Moreno. Finalists in the lead It is possible that no organization has so far presented more renowned teams so far this season like the Leones del Caracas and the Tiburones de La Guaira, the two teams that competed in the 2022-2023 grand final. The long-haired team, who entered this Friday's game as the absolute leaders of the standings, have Oswald Peraza, from the New York Yankees, César Hernández (current free agent with 10 years of experience in MLB) and Harold Castro ( another current free agent who played 99 games with the Colorado Rockies this year). Likewise, manager José Alguacil can also boast of having important prospects such as Eliézer Alfonzo Jr. and important veterans on the circuit such as Wilfredo Tovar, José Rondón and Albert Suárez. Tiburones, for its part, presents a squad with pieces such as Oswaldo Cabrera (Yankees), Ehire Adrianza (free agent who saw action in MLB in 2023), Sebastián Rivero (experience in the Major Leagues in 2021 and 2022) and the Series champion World Cup in 2015, Alcides Escobar. Danry Vásquez, Wilson García, Franklin Barreto and Francisco Arcia, all with solid reputations in the LVBP, are also at the disposal of boss Edgardo Alfonzo. Magellan shows his Just a few days ago, the Navegantes received big leaguers Deolis Guerra, René Pinto and Luis Torrens, who joined a team with important figures such as Renato Núñez, José Peraza and prospect Carlos Rodríguez, in addition to pitcher Enmanuel De Jesús, who was with the Venezuelan team in the last World Baseball Classic, and with Eduard Bazardo. The eternal MVP candidate, Hernán Pérez, once again commands the offense of the Cardinals, who have Gorkys Hernández, Jermaine Palacios, Odubel Herrera and Robert Pérez Jr. on their roster. Likewise, this Friday the team opened the doors for Ildemaro Vargas, Juniel Querecuto and Manuel Piña. Caribes, meanwhile, is playing with Luis Sardiñas, Herlis Rodríguez, Víctor Reyes, Niuman Romero, Balbino Fuenmayor and Willians Astudillo. The Tigres are not far behind with Rafael Marchán, José “Cafecito” Martínez, Alexi Amarista, Carlos Tocci and the recently acquired Alexander Palma, in addition to Sandy León and pitcher Yonny Chirinos. What's coming in the LVBP As brilliant as the first weeks of the LVBP tournament have been, the forecasts indicate that things will get better and better. Miguel Rojas, Maikel García, Eliéser Hernández, Brayan Rocchio and Ronald Acuña Jr. are expected by the Sharks over the next month. Francisco Álvarez recently visited the Magallanes cave and does not rule out wearing a uniform later. Neither does Carlos Pérez. The Lions hope to add the arm of Carlos Hernández at some point down the stretch, along with the possible returns of Gleyber Torres and Eugenio Suárez. In turn, Edward Olivares has already expressed his intentions to wear the Bravos colors in this contest. https://sellodeportivo.com/estrellas-doquier-lvbp-brilla-luz-propia/
  12. “Mr. “Security.” That is what many in Israel call - or have called until now - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the man who has led that country for the longest time since its creation in 1948. The nickname reflects what, according to various analysts consulted by BBC Mundo, has been Netanyahu's main objective since he first came to power almost three decades ago: keeping Israel safe. This image suffered a severe blow on October 7 when the Palestinian armed group Hamas, which governs the Gaza Strip, carried out a surprise attack on nearby Israeli towns, killing more than 1,400 people and taking some 240 hostages, according to authorities. local. It was the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust and the bloodiest attack on civilians that Israel has suffered since the first Arab-Israeli war that broke out the day after its founding. Hours after the attack began, Netanyahu announced retaliation. “Citizens of Israel, we are at war and we will win it,” he said. Since then, the Ministry of Health in Gaza has reported more than 11,000 deaths - including more than 4,000 children - as a result of Israeli airstrikes and ground raids that began in recent days. It has probably been one of the most complex months of his long career, with a growing number of international voices criticizing what they call ethnic cleansing and a disproportionate response against Palestinian civilians. In this article, BBC Mundo tells you how Netanyahu became the most dominant political figure of the last three decades in Israel. Between Israel and the US Mr. Security is not the only nickname Netanyahu has. In addition to "Bibi" - a childhood nickname that he still uses and is very po[CENSORED]r among his followers - they also call him "King Bibi", for the number of elections he has won, being the only Israeli leader to have governed for six periods. Benjamin Netanyahu was born in Tel Aviv in 1949, the year after the founding of the State of Israel (he was the first president of that country born after its founding). His father was a renowned historian, and as Bethan McKernan, correspondent for the British newspaper The Guardian in Jerusalem, told the BBC, “he grew up in a secular but socially conservative environment, with very strong ideas about Zionism and what the very young State of Israel was meant to be.” The middle brother of three boys, Netanyahu grew up between Israel and the United States, due to the career of his father, who taught at universities in Philadelphia and New York. And to this day he retains a distinct American accent when he speaks English. After having completed all of high school at Cheltenham High School, outside of Philadelphia, in 1967, at the age of 18, he traveled to Israel to complete five years of military service. There he joined the elite Sayeret Matkal special forces, Israel's anti-terrorist unit, and participated in numerous operations during the so-called War of Attrition against Egypt. “I had several brushes with death,” he would tell the American conservative think tank Hoover Institute years later about his experiences with that elite unit. “I almost drowned in a shootout in the middle of the Suez Canal. I almost froze to death in Syria. “I was bitten by a scorpion and lived to tell the tale.” After completing his military service (with the rank of captain) he returned to the United States in 1972 to study architecture and business administration at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he stood out as one of the best students. That same year he got married, the first of the three marriages he has had, and from which three children and four grandchildren have been born. But just a year later he interrupted his studies to return to Israel in October 1973 to serve with Sayeret Matkal in the Yom Kippur War against Egyptian forces. Yoni One of the leaders of the group was his older brother, Yonatan. “Yoni”, as everyone called him, used to stand out in everything he did, and was one of the main influences in the Israeli premier's life. Unlike his brother, who returned to the United States after the war to complete his studies at MIT and begin a doctorate in Political Science at Harvard University, Yoni continued a military career and became the commander of Sayeret. Matkal. In 1976, the anti-terrorist unit carried out a daring rescue operation when an Air France aircraft was hijacked by Palestinian militants and taken to Entebbe airport in Uganda, where they took nearly a hundred Israeli citizens hostage. Operation Entebbe (also known as Operation Thunder) was a success: all the kidnappers were killed and most of the hostages - with the exception of four who died - were rescued. Only one Israeli soldier was killed: Yoni, the force commander. “I really didn't think I would recover, but somehow I found inner strength,” Netanyahu revealed during a visit to the 92nd Street Y cultural center in New York. "I followed the example of my parents, who bore his grief with extraordinary dignity. I had to tell them about Yoni's fall in Entebbe. It was a moment of indescribable agony." Jump to politics The death of his brother also redirected his professional life. After working for a couple of years as an economic consultant at the prestigious Boston Consulting Group in Massachusetts, he left the position - and the US - to return to Israel and found and direct the Yonathan Netanyahu Anti-Terrorism Institute, a non-governmental organization dedicated to studying the terrorism and organize international conferences on how to combat it. In fact, he has published three books on the topic of terrorism (in 1981, 1987 and 1995) and a fourth on peace and Israel's place in the world. In the early 1980s he also worked as a manager at a furniture manufacturing company in Jerusalem and it was around this time that he began to connect with Israeli politicians, including Minister Moshe Arens, who appointed him Deputy Head of the Israel Mission. the Israeli Embassy in Washington DC. Before long he became Israel's ambassador to the United Nations. Four years later, in 1988, he moved permanently to Israel, where he began his political career by joining the right-wing Likud party and serving in the Knesset, the national parliament. In just five years – at 42 – he went on to become the leader of Likud. “He had a meteoric rise for a variety of reasons,” he explained in 2009 to the p First government With his victory in the elections, Netanyahu at 47 became the youngest prime minister in the history of Israel. But experts agree that he did not have an easy government. Ironically, one of the complicated points was the terrible relationship it had with the United States, governed at that time by Bill Clinton, who in 1994 had managed to promote a peace agreement between Israel and Jordan, which was the second country to recognize the existence of Israel after Egypt. Clinton was highly critical of Netanyahu's decision to allow the expansion of Israeli settlements in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, territories that Israel had occupied after the 1967 war. And years later he would blame him directly for the failure of the peace process with the Palestinians. For Israeli journalist Gil Hoffman, former political correspondent for the Jerusalem Post and current executive director of Honest Reporting, having to deal with Democratic American governments - such as that of Clinton, and years later that of Barack Obama - was tremendously frustrating for the Israeli conservative leader. “It was kind of a tragedy for him, who was so Mr. America and yet he fought with the US instead of working with them, for not having someone a little more like him" in the White House, Hoffman told the BBC. That “someone more like him” would appear many years later in the figure of the Republican Donald Trump, who in 2018 moved the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, stating that that historic city – revered by Jews, Muslims and Christians – was the “true ” capital of Israel. But Trump's arrival was still two decades away. During that first government, Netanyahu was pulled by two opposing forces. On the one hand, the US government and the Israeli left accused him of blocking the Oslo peace accords, signed by Isaac Rabin and the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat between 1993 and 1995. On the other hand, his right-wing supporters criticized him for having agreed to hand over to the Palestinians most of the city of Hebron - the second holiest city in Judaism - in the West Bank, one of the points of the agreement. They were tensions that, added to some scandals that shook his government, ended up taking their toll. Mr Economy In the 1999 elections Netanyahu was defeated by Labor's Ehud Barak, after which he decided to leave politics and return to the private sector. But the pause was short-lived. New Likud leader Ariel Sharon, who succeeded Barak after less than two years in government, appointed Netanyahu first as his foreign minister, and then as finance minister. It was in this role that Netanyahu continued to deepen the process of economic liberalization that had begun during his government and that, according to his supporters - and himself - would lead Israel to become an economic and technological power in the region. “We had a great economic crisis,” he later recalled of that period. “My oldest son told me: 'Look at Tel Aviv and look at New York. Look at their horizon, and look at ours – we had two skyscrapers at the time – and he continued: 'We will never be like them.' And I told him: 'Your father will now be the Minister of Finance, believe me, we will be like them.'” But although many in Israel credit him with achieving an “economic miracle” – hence another of his nicknames, “Mr. Economy” – critics argue that he destroyed Israel's revered social safety net. His tenure as minister lasted just two years: in 2005 he resigned in disagreement with Sharon's decision to unilaterally withdraw Israel from the Gaza Strip. That disagreement led Sharon to leave Likud and form a centrist party, Kadima. Netanyahu once again became the leader of the right-wing party. In 2009 he triumphed again at the polls and began what would be the longest period of government since the first Israeli government of David Ben-Gurion. “King Bibi” won four consecutive elections, ruling for more than 12 years, until June 2021. And just a year and a half after losing office, he was re-elected again in 2022 for an unprecedented sixth term, which still keeps him in power today. The secret of your success For Argentine-Israeli analyst Gabriel Ben-Tasgal, part of Netanyahu's success is due to the ideological inclination of the Israeli people. “Unlike the majority of the Israeli press, which has a secular, left or center-left profile, the po[CENSORED]tion of Israel, somewhat conservative and religious, tends to vote to the right, and that is why in the elections from 1977 until now This sector has practically always won,” he tells BBC Mundo. “To this ideological predisposition, Netanyahu added that he has a lot of charisma and knows how to capture the feelings of fear that enemies provoke in the po[CENSORED]tion and in the voter,” said the expert. 14. The President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, inaugurated this Thursday the XIX edition of the International Book Fair of Venezuela (Filven) with Colombia as the guest of honor country, in El Laguito, located in the Military Circle of Caracas (capital). At the opening of the event, the Venezuelan president expressed that Colombia and Venezuela are one homeland. "The poison of hatred should never be sown among us again, we are brothers, Colombia and Venezuela are one people and we must love each other," Maduro said. La Filven also includes the Amazonas State as a guest of honor and is dedicated on this occasion to celebrate the 190th anniversaries of the National Library of Venezuela and the 50th of the Vadell Publishing House. He will also pay tribute to the Venezuelan writers Carmen Delia Bencomo and Domingo Alberto Rangel, who have already died, and to the Palestinian authors Heba Abu Nada and Adania Shibli. Abu Nada died recently, after the beginning of the current escalation of Israel against the Palestinian people; while Shibli was canceled the presentation of a prize at the Frankfurt International Book Fair, in Germany, for his work A Minor Detail. The Filven will run from November 9 to 19, and it is planned to present about 200 books, as well as artistic activities, forums, conferences and discussions related to art and literature. About 161 Venezuelan writers will participate in Filven, and 65 guest authors from countries such as Colombia, Argentina, Cuba, Honduras, Spain, Costa Rica, Iran, France, Mexico, El Salvador, Chile, Italy and Uruguay. Venezuela and Colombia sign memorandum of understanding on cultural matters As part of the inauguration, the Minister of Culture of Venezuela, Ernesto Villegas and of Art, Knowledge and Culture of Colombia, Juan David Correa, signed a memorandum of understanding on cultural matters that will allow both countries to continue strengthening ties and cooperation in this sector. The Colombian minister thanked Venezuela for his country's invitation to the event, and assured that the onslaught of nations that seek to silence the voice of peoples will not be effective. "We believe that we can all fit in and that no one can ever forbid us the ability to dream again,” he said. For his part, the Venezuelan dignitary stressed that with the arrival of President Hugo Chavez to power in the South American country, the anti-values of exclusion existing in Venezuela towards Colombians disappeared. "What would have become of us (...) if we had not cultivated the vision of insurgent history (...) to consider the construction of the great. A truly humane, supportive society that cultivates the values of equality, respect, solidarity that cultivates the values of the country as independent, sovereign nations, not subordinated, kneeling or part of geopolitical games of imperial powers,” the president stressed. For his part, the Venezuelan Minister of Culture highlighted the 190 years of the National Library of Caracas, which has documents of great historical value for the nation. Venezuelan president sends message of solidarity to the Palestinian people The Venezuelan president sent a message of solidarity to the Palestinian people in the context of the inauguration of the XIX edition of the Filven. "Palestine, inescapably present with force, moves that attacked people, devastated by a supremacist ideology that persecutes, bombs, murders them and the people of Palestine resisting and raising their culture," he said. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.telesurtv.net/amp/news/presidente-venezuela-inaugura-edicion-filven-20231109-0028.html
  15. Israel must stop killing babies and women in Gaza, French President Emmanuel Macron said in an exclusive interview with the BBC. Speaking from the Elysee Palace in Paris, Macron said there was "no justification" for the bombings in the Palestinian territory, adding that a ceasefire would benefit Israel. While acknowledging Israel's right to protect itself, he said, "We urge you to stop the bombings" in Gaza. Macron also stressed that France "clearly condemns" the "terrorist" actions of Hamas. France - like Israel, the United States, the United Kingdom and other Western nations - considers Hamas a terrorist organization. Asked if he wished other leaders - including those of the United States and the United Kingdom - would join his call for a ceasefire, he replied, "I hope they will." The French president spoke a day after a humanitarian aid conference in Paris about the war in Gaza. Joshua: Macron spoke after the Paris Peace Conference. He said that the "clear conclusion" of all the governments and agencies present at that summit was that "there is no other solution than first a humanitarian pause, to go towards a ceasefire, which will allow us to protect all civilians who have nothing to do with terrorists." "De facto, civilians are being bombed today, de facto. These babies, these women and these old people are bombed and killed. There is no reason or legitimacy for this. So we urge Israel to stop." He stated that it was not for him to judge whether international law had been violated. “There is no justification” In a wide-ranging interview at the end of the first day of the Annual Paris Peace Forum, the French president spoke about several issues including the fear of violence spreading from the Middle East to France, urging citizens of all religions to be "united against anti-Semitism." Speaking about the situation in Gaza, Macron said France "clearly condemns" the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7, which triggered the war. Hamas militants killed more than 1,200 people and took 240 others hostage in the unprecedented cross-border assault they launched that day. "We share [Israel's] pain. And we share his will to end terrorism. In France we know what terrorism means." But he said there is "no justification" for the ongoing bombardment of civilians in Gaza. "It is extremely important for all of us because of our principles, because we are democracies. It is important in the medium and long term, as well as for Israel's own security, to recognize that all lives matter." When questioned, he refused to claim that Israel had violated international law in Gaza. "I am not a judge. I am a head of state," he said, noting that it would be wrong to criticize Israel, which is "a partner and a friend" of France, in this way, just a month after it was attacked. However, Macron disagreed that the best way for Israel to "protect itself is with a big bombardment of Gaza," and claimed that this was creating "resentment and bad feelings" in the region that would prolong the conflict. After a month of bombings and almost two weeks since Israel launched a major ground offensive in that territory, the Hamas-run Ministry of Health of Gaza declared on Friday that 11,078 people had been killed, while 1.5 million had fled their homes. Israel has said it will begin daily four-hour military pauses in parts of northern Gaza as it continues its offensive. However, his defense minister stressed that the pauses would be "localized" and "would not divert attention from the fighting." Ahead of a march against anti-Semitism on Sunday that will be attended by a large part of the French political class, President Macron called on all French citizens to condemn anti-Semitic acts "without ambiguity." He said that France had probably the largest Muslim community in Europe and a large Jewish community as well, and with France and the rest of Europe seeing a huge increase in anti-Semitism, all French citizens had to be united against anti-Semitism, and they had to "share the pain or the compassion of the Palestinians." The world focus on the war in Ukraine and Russia was displaced by the conflict of Israel and Hamas. The situation in Ukraine Then Macron addressed other issues of global interest, such as Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In his opinion, if Russia is allowed to win the war, "there will be a new imperial power" in Europe, which could threaten other former Soviet states such as Georgia and Kazakhstan, as well as the entire continent. "Because, definitely, what Russia is doing [in Ukraine] is imperialism and colonialism," he said. The French president said that it was the "duty" of his country and all countries to support Ukraine in its defense. But he also said that next month would be critical in the battle to regain lost ground in its counteroffensive operations. He stated that the time had "not yet" come for Ukraine to sit down at the negotiating table and stressed that the decision to agree belonged exclusively to Kyiv. But he added that the time may come to "have fair and positive negotiations, and sit down at the table and find a solution with Russia." Extremism on the Internet Macron also spoke about extremism on the internet, a key topic at the Paris Peace Forum. He specifically pointed to Meta, the parent company of Facebook, as well as Google, as the companies that "simply do not fulfill" the promises they made to moderate hate speech on their platforms. He claimed that many online spaces lack enough moderators for French-language content, which he called a "shame." He promised to "put pressure" on them about it, although he said TikTok had improved the number of moderators for its French-language content. And he claimed that climate change was causing terrorism in some parts of the world, specifically mentioning the effects of global warming on decreasing water levels in Lake Chad in West Africa. "As a consequence of climate change, many families who lived from fishing [suffered]... Many species disappeared. And it motivated policies [that] pushed a lot of people into terrorism." Asked if he has ever felt overwhelmed by the myriad of problems the world is facing, Macron said he saw it as "an opportunity and an honor to have responsibilities [as head of state]." "We need international cooperation [to address global problems]... This is a unique opportunity." https://www.bbc.com/mundo/articles/c2e27v1e97qo?at_link_type=web_link&at_medium=social&at_ptr_name=facebook_page&at_bbc_team=editorial&at_link_id=1340D2D0-8020-11EE-BD12-D4BAD9B5F045&at_campaign_type=owned&at_campaign=Social_Flow&at_link_origin=BBC_News_Mundo&at_format=image
