  13. BMW has confirmed that its forthcoming i4 electric saloon will produce 523bhp, with the Tesla Model 3 rival featuring a top speed of around 125mph. The new model, due to go into production in 2021 following the forthcoming iX3, will be the German firm’s first electric saloon. Along with the regular 4 Series, the new EV was previewed by the bold 4 Series Gran Coupe concept at the Frankfurt motor show. The new model, due to go into production in 2021 following the forthcoming iX3, will be the German firm’s first electric saloon. Along with the regular 4 Series, the new EV was previewed by the bold 4 Series Gran Coupe concept at the Frankfurt motor show. BMW claims the i4 “heralds a new era of driving pleasure”, and will feature the firm’s “hallmark brand driving pleasure in a particularly concentrated form.” BMW has released new official shots of the i4 undergoing winter testing, and has confirmed that it will make use of its fifth-generation eDrive system, which will also be used on the iX3 – due in 2020 – and the advanced iNext, which is set for launch in in 2021. BMW claims the 523bhp motors will allow for a 0-62mph time of around four seconds. The firm says that output has been chosen to mirror the power of a V8 engine in current BMW models, and claims that it will offer “outstanding performance characteristics and exceptionally high efficiency”. The latest eDrive system is built around a modular system featuring the electric motor, transmission and power electronics in a single housing, which BMW says means it can be used for a range of different models and power outputs. The i4 will feature an 80kWh high-voltage battery pack that weighs around 550kg and gives a claimed range of around 373 miles. The battery can be charged at rates of up to 150kW. As shown in previous prototype shots, a clear visual link between the i4 and the latest 3 Series can be seen. The i4 will share much of its design with the upcoming second-generation 4 Series. However, a side-on view reveals that the new car appears higher off the ground (both in terms of roof height and ground clearance) than the current 4 Series, likely due to a raised floor to accommodate the sizeable long-range battery. Earlier this year, BMW revealed that the i4 had been tested at its cold weather facility in Arjeplog, Sweden, with the goal of determining the durability of the models' batteries, electric motors and suspension systems. The i4 is scheduled to be built on the same line as standard 3 Series models at BMW's factory in Munich, Germany. To ensure a smooth production process with existing petrol, diesel and hybrid models, the manufacturer is already running assembly tests with pre-production versions. The expansion of the i sub-brand follows a ruling by the EU to enforce a fleet average CO2 emission reduction of 35% by 2030. The ruling effectively spells an end to the combustion engine as a sole source of propulsion for high-volume cars sold in Europe by the end of the next decade. This was expected by BMW’s top management, who initiated the acceleration of development of both long-range plug-in hybrids and electric models in a board meeting held earlier this year. Speaking to Autocar at the 2018 Paris motor show, chairman Harald Krüger confirmed the altered i division plan, which aims to enable BMW to offer more electric cars than any rival premium brand in the short term. It calls for the introduction of up to five dedicated i models by the end of 2021, with tentative steps to expand to 12 electric models within the whole BMW Group, including Mini and Rolls-Royce, by 2025. Krüger has also given the green light for 25 new plug-in hybrid models to be introduced by 2025 in order to meet the 2030 target. Among the models at the centre of BMW’s electrification strategy are a further developed version of the continuously evolving i3, the Mini SE, the iX3 and the i4. BMW will follow that with a more advanced range of premium electric cars employing solid-state batteries and autonomous driving features, previewed on the recent iNext concept car. Talking about the i4, Krüger said: “The leading factors that will set it apart are fantastic design, which is very different to anything else on the road, and the fact that it is lighter and therefore more dynamic than anything we see on the market today, thanks to the materials we will use. Couple that with the connectivity technology we are constantly developing and we are confident it will lead the market.” BMW's electric revolution begins in the sales charts BMW’s sales of electrified models have increased rapidly in the past two years. In January 2017, it registered 5232 plug-in vehicles globally, but that figure had more than doubled to 13,271 by December. The company registered on average more than 10,000 electrified models per month in 2018. These registrations are more significant viewed as a percentage of BMW’s total sales figures. In January 2017, this was an unremarkable 3.2%, but in August 2018, it was 6.7%. Surprisingly, the most po[CENSORED]r plug-in BMW Group model in 2017 was the i3 – a car that has been in showrooms since 2013 and failed to meet targets for many of its years on sale. A total of 31,482 were registered in 2017, nearly double the number in 2014. Despite this, BMW still has a long way to go to achieve its 2020 target of 500,000 electrified vehicles sold annually.
  14. Telling the difference between a teen's normal ups and downs or something bigger is among the top challenges parents face while identifying depression among the youth, says a new study. Forty per cent of parents struggle to differentiate between normal mood swings and signs of depression, while 30 per cent are tricked as their child hides his/her feelings well, according to a new national poll in the US. The C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health at the University of Michigan, is based on responses from 819 parents with at least one child in middle school, junior high, or high school. "In many families, the preteen and teen years bring dramatic changes both in youth behaviour and in the dynamic between parents and children," said poll co-director Sarah Clark. "These transitions can make it particularly challenging to get a read on children's emotional state and whether there is possible depression," Clark added. According to the researchers, some parents might be overestimating their ability to recognise depression in the mood and behaviour of their own child. An overconfident parent may fail to pick up on the subtle signals that something is amiss. The poll also suggests that the topic of depression is all too familiar for middle and high school students. One in four parents say their child knows a peer or classmate with depression, and one in 10 say their child knows a peer or classmate who has died by suicide. This level of familiarity with depression and suicide is consistent with recent statistics showing a dramatic increase in suicide among US youth over the past decade. Rising rates of suicide highlight the importance of recognizing depression in youth. Compared to the ratings of their own ability, parents polled were also less confident that their preteens or teens would recognize depression in themselves. "Parents should stay vigilant on spotting any signs of potential depression in kids, which may vary from sadness and isolation to anger, irritability and acting out," said Clark. Most parents also believe schools should play a role in identifying potential depression, with seven in 10 supporting depression screening starting in middle school, the study said.
  15. President Donald Trump has said he likes "the idea" of testifying in the impeachment inquiry against him. In a tweet on Monday Mr Trump said he would "strongly consider" the move after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi suggested it over the weekend. The Democrat-led inquiry is establishing whether Mr Trump withheld aid to Ukraine in return for an inquiry into ex-Vice President Joe Biden. The Republican president has dismissed it as a "witch hunt". On Sunday, Ms Pelosi said the president was welcome to "speak all the truth that he wants if he wants" before investigators. "If he has information that is exculpatory, that means ex, taking away, culpable, blame, then we look forward to seeing it," she told the CBS News programme Face the Nation. In his tweets, Mr Trump attacked Ms Pelosi as "Our Crazy, Do Nothing" speaker, but said he would consider testifying "in order to get Congress focused again". The president has recently faced renewed criticism for his use of Twitter. Chuck Schumer, the Democratic leader in the Senate, told reporters that if Mr Trump "doesn't like what he's hearing, he shouldn't tweet", but instead "testify under oath". His comments came after Mr Trump tweeted attacks on a witness - Marie Yovanovitch, the former US ambassador to Ukraine - while she was testifying to Congress on Friday. Ms Yovanovitch said it was "very intimidating", which Mr Trump denied. Ms Yovanovitch was removed as ambassador to Kyiv in May, two months before a controversial phone call between Mr Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, which is now key to the inquiry. A rough transcript of the call revealed that Mr Trump had urged President Zelensky to investigate unsubstantiated allegations against Mr Biden and his son Hunter, who sat on the board of a Ukrainian gas company. In the latest development, state department official David Holmes told investigators in closed door testimony on Saturday that he had overheard a US diplomat telling Mr Trump that Ukraine would carry out investigations the president had asked for.
  16. mods have always been a huge part of the Total War experience, but since Total War: Warhammer the community has only grown larger. With the possibilities that the expanded Warhammer Fantasy universe brings, we’ve seen modders doing more than ever, filling in the gaps and creating content that CA may never get around to adding themselves. Whether that’s fan favourite legendary lords, entirely new factions, or as with the hugely po[CENSORED]r SFO Grimhammer, an entire rework which brings the game more in line with tabletop. But it’s not just fantasy that’s been receiving more love — Three Kingdoms is the most po[CENSORED]r and innovative historical Total War we’ve seen in years. Also being based in such a po[CENSORED]r historical period, and being of so much interest to the Chinese gaming community, there have been a tonne of mods. These not only add elements to make character even more distinctive, but also offer a touch of individuality to players, which feels very at home in a historical period, which at its heart, is about heroes. What are the best Total War: Three Kingdoms Mods? Make them Unique (Overhaul) Beneath A Red Sky: A Battle Overhaul (Overhaul) No Death by Old Age (Quality of Life) Vanilla Units Remaster (Quality of Life) Recruited unique character can use their special units (Quality of Life) Respec Character Skills when they join you (Quality of Life) SFO: Three Dragons (Total Conversion) Total War: Three Kingdoms Overhaul Mods For those wishing to spice up the vanilla experience, overhaul mods completely change-up aspects of the game. The clue is in the name, an ‘overhaul’ of a pre-existing game feature, either making it more diverse and interesting, or bringing it more in line with an idea of what the game is, and how it should play. MAKE THEM UNIQUE The Three Kingdom’s period was filled with famous individuals, and to reflect this, there is a record of almost every named character in the game. But it can often be hard to appreciate their individuality when most of the characters use the same few repeated portraits. Make them Unique is a mod that fixes this, creating new unique heroes alongside absolutely gorgeous artwork. It is a mod that fills a gap, adding unique portraits, skills and items, to heroes who should’ve had them in the base game. These are figures like Dong Min (who as Dong Zhou’s brother is hugely important) or Lu Zheng (the heir to Zheng Jiang’s bandit faction). Altogether it adds a touch more colour to the character-play of the Three Kingdoms campaigns. BENEATH A RED SKY: A BATTLE OVERHAUL A recent criticism by many long time historical strategy fans, has been based around Total War battles becoming ever shorter and more ‘arcade-like’. Whether you believe that or not, Beneath A Red Sky is a battle mod which attempts to capture a slower tactical battle experience, as the author says, more in line with “What you would expect from an ancient battle”. The mod itself affects a variety of changes — whether altering unit roles, so spearmen push back enemies, and axe infantry act as shield-breakers, or an overhauled fatigue system, with larger detriments on morale and combat aptitude. A full list of changes can be found in the Steam Workshop, but Beneath A Red Sky might very well be the mod for those hoping to re-capture the slower battle experience of the Total Wars of yesteryear. Total War: Three Kingdoms Quality of Life Mods Games are rarely perfect, and it can often be hard for developers to justify and find the time to change the little things — those tiny irritations that can gnaw away at a players in-game experience. Quality of life mods effectively look to make these tweaks, altering the little things, and smoothing the way for players to enjoy the game to its fullest. If they are doing their job well, you probably won’t even notice they are doing it at all. NO DEATH BY OLD AGE In my first campaign Lü Bu lived a good life — he murdered thousands of peasants with his nuke-spear, and married Zheng Jiang, siring a new generation of super-soldier warriors. But somehow it didn’t seem right for The Warrior Without Equal to die at a contented old age. With the mod, No Death by Old Age, you can prevent all your characters from dying peacefully, instead forcing them to keep fighting for the glory of China! This mod also wins first prize for best cover picture (Huang Zhong being the most famous ‘Elderly’ character from the Three Kingdoms period). VANILLA UNITS REMASTER After playing Three Kingdoms for awhile, units can begin to look a little samey. It’s not necessarily the difference between the units themselves, but more the ornamentation of individuals within those units. Vanilla Units Remaster by Deema is a mod which seeks to make units “look better while still maintaining their original feel and historical authenticity”. This features changes such as reskinning general’s bodyguards, adding ornamental weapons to higher tier units, and just generally adding more variety wherever possible. These are little things, but they do add a further element of variety to battles. RECRUITED UNIQUE CHARACTER CAN USE THEIR SPECIAL UNITS In Three Kingdoms, each faction has a special unit they can recruit, and the unique heroes belonging to that faction are the ones with that ability. But when another faction gains that hero, they lose the ability to recruit their previous factions unique unit. Recruited unique character can use their special units, is a mod which ties that faction unit recruitment to a skill, meaning that even if you recruit them into your faction, they will still have access to that special unit — a way of further emphasizing their individuality as a hero character. RESPEC CHARACTER SKILLS WHEN THEY JOIN YOU We’ve all been there. After turns and turns currying favour with a faction, you finally confederate them, getting that hero character you’ve had your eyes on for the past 20 turns. But lo and behold, despite them being an outstanding warrior, the AI has for some reason decided to upgrade them as an administrator instead. With Respec Character Skills when they join you, this will never be a problem again. When a new hero joins your faction, you’ll simply have the option to re-allot all of their skill points, focusing them for whatever role you have in mind. Total War: Three Kingdoms Total Conversion Mods These are the really crazy ones — we’re talking Westeros: Total War for Medieval II, Third Age: Total War (also for Medieval II) or even Warhammer: Total War for Rome I (a decade before Total War: Warhammer). This where modders truly shine, using what the game has given them, as well as their imagination and skill, to fashion something completely new. SFO: THREE DRAGONS I can only speak for the English language mods (Three Kingdoms has an extremely prevalent Chinese modding community) but SFO’s Three Kingdoms mod is the most significant. Three Dragons is a mod which, in the words of its creators “changes every aspect of TW:3K to be more interesting and challenging”. These changes include reworked battles, UI, units, terrain effects, heroes, literally everything you can think of. The mod is still growing however, and though a full list of changes is listed, it has a bit of a way to go. It doesn’t yet offer the incredibly different experience that a good rework should. Many of you might know the SFO team and their founder, Venris, for their amazing work on Total War: Warhammer 1 and 2 overhaul mods, and as they continue that work (most recently the Bloodgrounds Beastmen campaign overhaul) Three Dragons represents a side project. Knowing their work, however, I do think it’s the Three Kingdom’s rework to watch, and that given more time, and their skills, it’ll become a great mod.
