  4. Sanya, in the far south of China’s Hainan Island, is known as a place to holiday – with its plentiful beaches and all-year-round warm weather. But it’s also growing as a destination for events, conferences and exhibitions, with investment in the sector bringing world-class facilities and thousands of new visitors. The annual Hainan Island International Film Festival drew top names from China and across the globe. They included the British film director Simon West, who was visiting for the first time. “I’ve heard about this beautiful island for several years and been trying to get here,” he said. “I’m always looking for beautiful places to film and this is a fantastic island. So, I am so glad I eventually came here, even if it’s just for the festival. But I bet I’ll be back to shoot a movie.” More than 3,000 Hainanese living in 28 countries returned recently for a World Congress at the Mangrove Tree Resort World Sanya Bay. Xueshen Feng, vice-president of the Hainan Association of France, was there to promote ties. “For a small island, it's really developing. And we're looking for business opportunities," he said. The Mangrove is Sanya’s biggest resort hotel. It’s also looking to an international future. Yong Su is responsible for managing international meetings and events at the resort. “Large international companies will have more staff moving around and there'll be more flights," he said. "I believe that international companies will choose Hainan Island and Sanya more in the future.” Alongside hotels, Sanya is getting a new international convention and exhibition centre. Due for completion in 2020, it will help meet future demands in this growing industry. Outside events are big business too. The city will play host to the Asian Beach Games next year. They will bring 4,000 athletes from across the continent, competing in everything from volleyball to kite surfing. Some of them will battle it out in Teqball - a new sport that looks like a cross between table tennis and football. You can hit the ball with everything except your hands.
  5. At least in the United States, the Chrysler Corporation didn't offer a car-based pickup to challenge models like the Ford Ranchero and Chevrolet El Camino until the introduction of the Dodge Rampage and Plymouth Scamp until the early 1980s. Now, Abimelec Design imagines how a 1969 Dodge Charger would look following a pickup conversion. For plenty of power, there's a Hellcat supercharged 6.2-liter V8 under the hood. The creator calls the result the Hellcamino. Abimelec Designed the Hellcamino as a speedy sleigh for Santa. However, we're seeing the creation after Christmas, so consider this pickup a way to haul your presents home in style. The antlers on the Hellcat logo are a cool touch any time of the year, though. To create this design, Abimelec Design keeps the Charger's styling the same until your eye reaches the B-pillar. The separation in the center of the grille identifies this as the 1969 model. The sleek roof and rear seat are gone. This space allows for the creation of a pickup bed at the back.
  6. Shortly before 08:00 on 26 December 2004, a magnitude-9.1 earthquake struck under the sea in northern Indonesia. In the hours that followed, a massive tsunami fanned out across the Indian Ocean, killing close to 230,000 people, most in Indonesia. Ahead of the 15th anniversary of the tragedy, BBC Thai's Chaiyot Yongcharoenchai visited southern Thailand, which was devastated by the tsunami. This is the story of some of those who survived and what they did to help afterwards. You may find some of the details distressing. Wittaya Tantawanich - emergency worker, Patong beach That morning on Patong beach was very quiet. I was stationed close to Patong Hospital on a rescue truck. Then I got hungry, so I drove toward the beach in order to find something to eat. Dr Weerawit Sarideepan - then-doctor at Vachira Phuket Hospital It was the day after the hospital staff party - it was my day off and I had a long lie-in. At 08:00, I heard my wooden bedroom windows were shaking. I told my wife that it must be from the car outside. Then I rolled back to sleep. Samran Chanyang - master of ceremonies and mortician at Yan Yao temple I led the prayer ceremony on the morning of 26 December 2004, which was a Buddhist holy day. I said the prayer into the microphone, so everyone could hear it. All of a sudden, we lost the power and we felt the earthquake. I continued without the speaker afterwards. Wittaya Tantawanich I sat there to enjoy my breakfast with the beach view. As I sat there, I felt the earthquake at around 08:00. No one panicked or worried. I continued to sit there waiting to get an emergency call. Sathaporn Sawangpuk - captain of the Mahidol ship We were on our way back from a month-long marine research trip in the Indian Ocean. We made a stop at Koh Racha Yai island in Phuket for a diving lesson for our interns. The sea was quite calm, the sky was so clear and blue. I told my team: 'What a perfect day to be in the sea.' Primpraow Jitpentom - nurse on a diving trip near the Mahidol ship I took my friends from Bangkok out for a diving trip on that Sunday morning. I did this many times but my husband had never seen the underwater world. I told him it was really worth it. Captain Sathaporn Sawangpuk After breakfast, we all went to the end of the boat on the deck to watch the intern diving with instructors. All of a sudden, I felt the ship lift and swing to the left and to the right. We had no idea what happened, but my instinct told me to start the ship and head out to the middle of the sea. Primpraow Jitpentom Our speedboat was getting closer to the shore. All of a sudden, the diving instructor told the boat driver to stop since he noticed something was wrong. He pointed to the sea and told me there was no water at the beach. He told me: 'This can't be good.'

  8. Formed in 1992 in New York, Wu-Tang Clan have sold over 40 million records worldwide to become one of the most influential hip hop groups of all time. Euronews spoke with them backstage in their dressing room moments before they hit the stage at Dubai’s Sole DXB Festival. It was the band’s first time in Dubai, and they were finding it a lot more relaxed than their usual turf, New York City's Staten Island. Raekwon told Euronews they had received a friendly welcome. “We've been running around going to the mall and just meeting people and they been extra humble and you know, that's what I love is that you could go somewhere and, like if I dropped my wallet, you get your wallet back. You get your wallet back. So to me when you see people like that, it's like, it's a blessing.” U-God felt he felt he could let his guard down in the emirate. “I like the fact there's no guns really, no gun violence,” he said. “The laws are different and a little bit more strict. There’s certain things that need to be done.” Looking back on their 28-year career, Cappadonna described themselves as “pioneers”. “We paved the way and made it, you know, more possible for the upcoming artist struggling to get in there, and be creative, and make their own way too. But you know, at the same time, it's like we are still the kings of this right here.” Raekwon said their success was proof that dreams come true. “You know, you work hard and people see your work ethic is good and they know that you come from a history of poverty. And we did a lot. And like you say, we opened the doors for a lot of these youngsters, you know, and they look at us, they look at us in a godly fashion. And that comes from us knowing our struggle, knowing where we came from. But also knowing where we are going? And the music has been that vessel.” The group would not be drawn on politics and the Black Lives Matter movement. “All lives matter,” Cappadonna said, while Raekwon said he believed US politics was starting “to become like comedy”. Despite their success, the group says they still find inspiration in their daily lives. U-God said: “Keeping it real for me is just paying my bills and taking care of my babies and staying out of trouble, harm's way. “I'm trying to live and write stuff I still go through, because I’m still going through drama. The drama never stops.”
  9. Russia has successfully tested a country-wide alternative to the global internet, its government has announced. Details of what the test involved were vague but, according to the Ministry of Communications, ordinary users did not notice any changes. The results will now be presented to President Putin. Experts remain concerned about the trend for some countries to dismantle the internet. "Sadly, the Russian direction of travel is just another step in the increasing breaking-up of the internet," said Prof Alan Woodward, a computer scientist at the University of Surrey. "Increasingly, authoritarian countries which want to control what citizens see are looking at what Iran and China have already done. "It means people will not have access to dialogue about what is going on in their own country, they will be kept within their own bubble." Russia internet: Law introducing new controls comes into force Russia internet freedom: Thousands protest against cyber-security bill Russia considers 'unplugging' from internet How would a domestic internet work? The initiative involves restricting the points at which Russia's version of the net connects to its global counterpart, giving the government more control over what its citizens can access. "That would effectively get ISPs [internet service providers] and telcos to configure the internet within their borders as a gigantic intranet, just like a large corporation does," explained Prof Woodward. So how would the government establish what some have dubbed a "sovereign Runet"? Countries receive foreign web services via undersea cables or "nodes" - connection points at which data is transmitted to and from other countries' communication networks. These would need to be blocked or at least regulated. This would require the co-operation of domestic ISPs and would be much easier to achieve if there were just a handful of state-owned firms involved. The more networks and connections a country has, the more difficult it is to control access. Then Russia would need to create an alternative system. In Iran, the National Information Network allows access to web services while policing all content on the network and limiting external information. It is run by the state-owned Telecommunication Company of Iran. One of the benefits of effectively turning all internet access into a government-controlled walled garden, is that virtual private networks (VPNs), often used to circumvent blocks, would not work. Another example of this is the so-called Great Firewall of China. It blocks access to many foreign internet services, which in turn has helped several domestic tech giants establish themselves. Russia already tech champions of its own, such as Yandex and Mail.Ru, but other local firms might also benefit. The country plans to create its own Wikipedia and politicians have passed a bill that bans the sale of smartphones that do not have Russian software pre-installed. Technical Challenges One expert warned that the policy could help the state repress free speech, but added that it was not a foregone conclusion that it would succeed. "The Russian government has run into technical challenges in the past when trying to increase online control, such as its largely unsuccessful efforts to block Russians from accessing encrypted messaging app Telegram," Justin Sherman, a cyber-security policy fellow at the New America think tank, told the BBC. "Without more information about this test though, it's hard to assess exactly how far Russia has progressed in the path towards an isolatable domestic internet. "And on the business front, it remains to be seen just how much domestic and foreign pushback Russia will get." Local news agencies, including Pravda, reported the deputy head of the Ministry of Communications had said that the tests of the scheme had gone as planned. "The results of the exercises showed that, in general, both the authorities and telecoms operators are ready to effectively respond to emerging risks and threats, to ensure the stable functioning of both the internet and unified telecommunication network in the Russian Federation," said Alexey Sokolov. The state-owned Tass news agency reported the tests had assessed the vulnerability of internet-of-things devices, and also involved an exercise to test Runet's ability to stand up to "external negative influences".
