  5. It's impossible to think about The Final Shape without the context of the last 10 years, the seven other Destiny 2 expansions, and the four original Destiny expansions--plus the vanilla campaigns that came with both games. This eighth Destiny 2 expansion is, to some degree, the culmination of the somewhat haphazard decade-long journey that the first game spawned, in which Bungie has continually tried experiment after experiment in gameplay, adjusted and recalibrated its storytelling, and worked and reworked its approach to running a live-service game. While the additions haven't always consistently built toward a story conclusion or a definitive vision of the game, there was a clear, mostly positive evolution across all those steps that informs what The Final Shape is to Destiny as a whole. I've noted in the past when expansions were high-water marks for Destiny 2 as a game, but this is something else. The Final Shape isn't just a step forward in a long march of progress, but, in every single way, a leap. Through its campaign, its new destination, its new activities, and its post-campaign story continuation, The Final Shape is as close as Destiny has ever gotten to the original promise of the game when Bungie first described a shared-world sci-fi fantasy shooter set in a far-flung future. This isn't just Destiny 2 as the best it's ever been--this is Destiny 2 as it always should have been. The Final Shape avoids past pitfalls by pulling together the best elements of all Destiny 2 stories, setting clear stakes and motivations for the antagonist, while keeping a tight focus on Destiny 2's main cast of characters as they head toward a likely suicidal, potentially world-ending confrontation. The Final Shape is easily the best story Destiny has ever told in an expansion, clearly laying out what is at stake and, at least emotionally, how it'll work, and setting players on a journey straight from point A to point B and a final confrontation with the Witness. A major benefit to that story, and the campaign in general, is the Pale Heart itself. Expansions always bring new destinations to Destiny 2, usually a new planet or moon with lots of cool places for events to happen, but the Pale Heart is inside the Traveler, the magic robot space god that's been at the center of this franchise for 10 years. Leaning hard into that magical side of the game, we get a location that's strange, familiar, uncanny, and often remarkable in its art direction. The idea is that the reality of the place is manifested from the memories and emotions of the people within it, creating meldings of familiar locations from throughout Destiny's history, but often recombined in strange ways or twisted by corruption. The Pale Heart is a gorgeous and fascinating place to explore, at once a heaven and hell of the Destiny universe. It leans all the way into the game's weirder side, which comprises some of the best elements of Destiny 2, and offers a ton of different places to fight, run, and climb, a variety that it uses to provide new gameplay scenarios and combat encounters that feel fresh and interesting, despite players doing more or less this exact thing for the last 10 years. The campaign combines many of the best elements from years of Destiny 2 gameplay to create a standout experience, especially on the challenging Legendary difficulty. First, it's the most mechanically intensive a campaign has been. Just about every big encounter has an extra layer to deal with, like toxic air that requires you to periodically zap a specific object while you stand next to it to gain a protective buff, or enemies that drop "runes" when they die that correspond to locked doors, requiring you to remember which pictures you saw earlier to activate the correct keys. 7. Still in early access, Evil Empire's The Rogue Prince of Persia is already an entertaining 2D roguelike, building a world composed of vibrant colors and dozens of monstrous soldiers that are ever-so-delightful to slice and crush over and over. For now, the game falters when it comes to delivering a compelling story, but its use of narrative breadcrumbs to lead the player through its assortment of levels helps to maintain an incentive to push forward when its challenging combat presents a roadblock that takes a handful of attempts to overcome. It's still too early to say anything definitive about the full game, but what's here is more than a sound bedrock--this is a great spiritual successor to Dead Cells that builds on an already engaging combat loop with smooth parkour and movement mechanics. In The Rogue Prince of Persia, you play as the eldest of two princes, who has found himself stuck in a time loop. The Huns have invaded the prince's home city, utilizing a strange dark magic that has overwhelmed Persia's forces. Possessing a medallion that revives him in an oasis encampment just outside the city three days into the invasion every time he dies, the prince has to repeatedly fight his way through the Huns to reach their leader and kill him. While working his way through the various levels of the game, the prince will also run across allies and members of his family--some captured, others still fighting the Huns--whom he can aid by utilizing knowledge gleaned from multiple loops. The prince's investigations play out as a mind board with pictures of characters and notes that are connected with lines, hinting at what you might have to do next to proceed in the game. A note discovered in the Huns' camp reveals that an important individual has been captured by the game's first boss, for example, encouraging you to reach said boss to question them as to their identity. Some of these investigations require you to travel to specific areas in a certain order over the course of a single run--I once had to talk to someone in one of the two starting areas to grab a specific item, travel to another area to use said item, and then go onto a third location to see how the used item had affected the environment. Dying amid a run would reset the process, as the nature of the time loop would mean that I never spoke to the person in the first area in the first place. This structure makes The Rogue Prince of Persia far more approachable than it would be otherwise, as clearing the first two bosses to reach the palace at the center of the city is quite the challenge. Could you manage to do so on your very first run? Certainly. But such a feat is unlikely without acquiring a few upgrades and learning the ropes of the game and the bosses' patterns first. Connecting the threads of the mind board and crossing off these smaller goals are more feasible from the start, providing a means of achieving "victory" even when you lose. A half dozen or so runs into the game, I remember losing to the second boss again but just thinking, "Sure, maybe I didn't beat this guy this time around, but I did manage to uncover who the first boss kidnapped and where I might be able to find them--let's go save him!" I had lost but I still accomplished something, and that feeling made me want to jump right into another run and go again. 8. France’s billionaire Saade family spent more than four decades discreetly building a global shipping empire from their base in the southern city of Marseille. The late founder mostly shirked elite Parisian social circles and the publicity that comes with politics. But following a few years of unprecedented growth and record profits, the second generation heirs led by the more high-profile scion Rodolphe Saade and the company they control, CMA CGM SA, now find themselves in the national spotlight. Both parties leading the polls are threatening to impose much higher taxes. 9. Wild Thang, an eight-year-old Pekingese, has been crowned as the winner of this year's World's Ugliest Dog competition. Held during the 2024 Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California, this year's contest included eight contenders - the majority rescues who came from shelters before finding their forever families. Wild Thang, from Coos Bay, Oregon, has competed five times in previous World's Ugliest Dog competitions, but this is his first win. Wild Thang's unique looks are due to a case of canine distemper when he was a 10-week-old puppy. The disease prevented the growth of his teeth, hence the dangling tongue, and muscular disorder in one of his legs. The World's Ugliest Dog competition has been held for nearly 50 years and "celebrates the imperfections that make all dogs special and unique," according to its website. Wild Thang, and his owner Ann Lewis, will receive $5,000 and on NBC's The Today Show. A wheelchair-bound 14-year-old pug named Rome came in second place and receives a prize of $3,000. It was Rome's first entry into the contest. "I love that [the competition] represents dogs that are imperfect — imperfectly perfect," Rome's owner Michelle Grady said. Another first-time entrant, a 14-year-old white coated and mixed breed rescue dog named Daisy May, won the third place title and will receive $2,000. She was rescued from the streets at two years old. She has lost her hair, teeth and vision. Daisy May's owner, Elizabeth Whitehouse, said it was a surprise to take a podium position. "I thought that she would be the most beautiful ugly dog, but as it turns out, other people don't see the beauty in her that I do," she said. Voting was also open online for fans to select one special dog to receive the People's Choice Award, which went to Rome, the judges' runner-up. The annual contest emphasizes importance of adopting all animals. It's not about making fun of "ugly" dogs, according to the contest, but instead "having fun with some wonderful characters and showing the world that these dogs are really beautiful!"This year's judges included NBC News correspondent Gadi Schwartz, human rights advocate Linda Witong Abrahm and California 34th Treasurer Fiona Ma. Entries this year included Chihuahua mixes, Chinese Crested mixes and Pug mixes. One contestant who missed out on a prize, Freddie Mercury, is a rescue who made his debut in the contest this year. Fred, who is described as having "a face like a fork-lift", spends his days as a mascot for Petaluma's local ice cream truck. He also attends youth football games and is a special request at birthday parties. Link: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c511n9nqwd1o
  10. Forget the Countach. In 2007, Nissan dropped the poster car which defined a generation. This burly silver coupe tore down the establishment, lit the rubble on fire, then paved the way forward. With news that the Skyline GT-R namesake is dead—at least on our shores—it felt an appropriate time to take stock. Indeed, the R35 Nissan GT-R arrived with a boom that very year. For a middle-class Millenial kid like myself, the R35 seemed as though it'd crawled from a sizzling impact crater like some gleaming alien mech. Those core memories remain. But the GT-R left us with something far more important when the dust settled, a performance-car formula that would dictate everything hence, from Bimmer to Tesla, even as the R35 faded into obsolescence itself. Maybe that first bit, the one about the alien mech, that feeling, is hard to remember now. After all, it was 17 years ago. Or perhaps it's because the GT-R has undergone so little change since it bowed. The R35 feels like old wallpaper. But if you adjust those rose-colored Ray-Bans just so, you might even remember that swelling sense of anticipation… Even before “the new GT-R” arrived, we devoted readers of Super Street magazine and Sport Compact Car knew something wicked on the way. Every detail that leaked from the GT-R's development seemed an impossibility, like a dork mindlessly crossing off Bingo squares generated by a JDM fever dream. Its engine shall be assembled by hand in a hermetically sealed vault. Its interior will sound whisper-quiet at 186 mph. Its computers will account for wheel slip within thousandths of seconds. It's faster around The ‘Ring than Porsche's best. All proved true. Link: https://www.motor1.com/features/723422/goodbye-nissan-skyline-gtr/
  11. Britain's Katie Archibald - a cycling gold medallist at the 2016 and 2020 Olympics - will miss next month's Games in Paris after breaking her leg in a freak accident. Archibald, 30, broke two bones in her leg and tore ligaments off the bone after tripping over a step in her garden. In a post on Instagram on Thursday,, external Archibald says she had surgery on Wednesday to repair the breaks and ligament damage. "I tripped over a step in the garden and managed to, somehow, dislocate my ankle; break my tibia and fibula; and rip two ligaments off the bone. What the heck," said Archibald. "That was on Tuesday, and since then I've been in full princess mode. "Had surgery yesterday to pin the bones back together and reattach the ligaments. Then hopefully this afternoon I'll be going home." Archibald was aiming to compete in the team pursuit, madison and omnium at next month’s Games. She won Olympic gold in the women's team pursuit at Rio 2016, with a silver in the same event at Tokyo 2020, plus gold in the madison. "A hundred thank yous for the fabulous doctors, nurses, radiographers, porters, physios, surgeons and more at the Manchester Royal Infirmary," said Archibald. "A hundred apologies for what this means for the Olympic team, which I've been told won't involve me. "I'm still processing that bit of news, but thought I better confirm it publicly instead of leaving it to the grapevine." In a statement, British Cycling said they were heartbroken that Archibald will miss the Paris Olympics. "We share in Katie's heartbreak over her injury, and the cruel manner in which she has been denied the chance to ride for the medals she so coveted in Paris," read the statement. "Our focus is now on providing Katie with the best possible support as she begins her recovery, and we know that the whole cycling community will be right behind her for every step." 12. India has a ticking time bomb on its hands – a cardiovascular disease (CVD) epidemic that struck its citizens “a decade earlier” compared to Western countries. This alarming trend, highlighted by the Association of Physicians of India (API), raises serious concerns about the nation’s health landscape. CVDs, encompassing heart disease and stroke, are the leading cause of death globally, and India stands second in this tragic statistic. Worryingly, CVDs claim the lives of over 20% of men and nearly 17% of women in India annually. Dr Milind Y Nadkar, president of the API, emphasises the severity of the situation: Indians face a 20-50% higher mortality rate from coronary artery disease (CAD) compared to other po[CENSORED]tions. Moreover, CAD-related deaths and disabilities have doubled in India over the past 30 years. “Indians experience CVDs a decade earlier than those in Western countries, which makes it vital to address the early age of onset and rapid disease progression in a timely manner. With India also recording the highest rate of coronary artery disease worldwide, it is essential to bring more awareness about symptoms like angina,” he also stated, according to PTI. 13. Four members of the UK's richest family have received prison sentences for exploiting staff brought over from India to work at their Geneva villa. Prakash and Kamal Hinduja, as well as their son Ajay and his wife Namrata, were found guilty of exploitation and illegal employment by a Swiss court and handed sentences ranging from four to four-and-a-half years. They were acquitted on the more serious charge of human trafficking. Lawyers representing the defendants said they intend to appeal against the ruling. Speaking outside the court, Robert Assael, the lawyer for the defendants, said: "I'm shocked. We're going to fight it to the bitter end." Three workers who were brought over from their native India alleged the family paid them as little as £7 ($8) to work 18-hour days - less than a tenth of the amount required under Swiss law - and confiscated their passports. They also claimed the family - whose fortune is estimated at around £37bn - rarely allowed them to leave the house, which is in Geneva’s wealthy neighbourhood of Cologny. During the trial, prosecutors alleged the family spent more on their dog than on their servants. The defence argued that the employees received ample benefits, were not kept in isolation and were free to leave the villa. The employees "were grateful to the Hindujas for offering them a better life", Mr Assael argued. The elder Hindujas, both over 70, did not attend court proceedings, pleading ill health. Ajay and Namrata did attend court but were not there to hear the verdict. Following the verdict, the prosecution requested an immediate detention order for the younger Hinduja couple, but this was denied by the judge. The defence said Kamal Hindula is currently in hospital in Monaco - and the other three family members are at his bedside. It is not the first time that Geneva, a hub for international organisations as well as the world’s wealthy, has been in the spotlight over the alleged mistreatment of servants. Last year, four domestic workers from the Philippines launched a case against one of Geneva’s diplomatic missions to the United Nations, claiming they had not been paid for years. 15. The Nintendo Switch may not have been a runaway success if it hadn't launched with the unassailable masterpiece that is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The game radically reworked Nintendo’s beloved, action-RPG series into a spectacular new form that honors the franchise's original spirit. Its sequel, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, provides an even grander open-world Hyrule to explore on land and in the sky. However, Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are far from the only Zelda games you can play on the Switch. Zelda is one of Nintendo’s oldest, most acclaimed, and most influential franchises. So, naturally, many games inspired by Zelda have found their way to the handheld/console hybrid. With The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom finally arriving (and, hopefully, Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD coming in the near future), you might be inspired to play more Zelda and Zelda-adjacent games on your Switch. Now, no Zelda game is truly "bad," so no shade to Oceanhorn coming in last place. Instead, think of this list as going in order from "pretty good" to "greatest game of all time."
