  1. Rugby World Cup: France will face South Africa in the quarter-final The French XV now knows the identity of their quarter-final opponent: they will face South Africa on October 15 at the Stade de France. Ireland, which largely beat Scotland (36-14) on Saturday, will face New Zealand. The Blues and the South Africans faced each other for the last time in Marseille in November 2022, the Blues then beating the Springboks (30-26) © Sylvain Thomas, AFP (Archives) The French South Africa, reigning world champion. The Springboks finished in second place (15 points) in Group B, behind Ireland (19 pts), who defeated Scotland (36-14) at the Stade de France on Saturday October 7. With this quarter-final, the XV of France is attacking a new phase of the competition which will require it to clearly move upmarket, with or without its scrum half Antoine Dupont. “It’s a successful match,” said Blues coach Fabien Galthié after the victory against Italy. “We had to win, we did. Being able to line up all the players and control the match from start to finish is also satisfying.” The statistics, in attack and defense, of the big victory of the Blues, deprived of Dupont, in the recovery phase and hoped for the quarter-final, would almost make one dizzy. Thus, the Tricolores not only won 100% of their scrums and 87% of their touches, but above all they carried 144 balls (their record in this World Cup) for a total of 822 meters covered. In short, they regained their possession game, which led to longer phases of play and led to tries, eight in all. “I asked the players to be able to go beyond playing time, to hold the ball,” explained Karim Ghezal on Saturday morning, the co-coach of the Blues in charge of the conquest, and in particular of the key. “Offensively, I think it's perhaps our best match of the competition, and it's good that it's happening now,” said fullback Thomas Ramos after the match. Very disciplined Blues "The forwards did a big job. We won almost all our rucks, we had speed in our game, that certainly helped us carry the ball to score tries," said him the young winger Louis Bielle-Biarrey after the meeting. Also in defense, France produced a clean copy, missing only nine tackles in total for a success rate of 94%, which no other team at the World Cup had done so far. As for discipline, it was again there, with only six penalties conceded. Despite all these positive points, this performance must be put into perspective given the state of form of the opponent, Italy with 156 points conceded against New Zealand (17-96) and France (7-60), being nothing more than a shadow of itself. Because next Sunday, against South Africa, the reigning world champion, it will be a completely different music that awaits the Blues. The French XV has already had a taste in November 2022 with a confrontation against the Springboks in Marseille won by the Blues (30-26). By then, the XV of France, which benefits this weekend from "two days of breathing before diving" according to Ghezal, will know if it gets back its playing master Antoine Dupont. https://www.france24.com/fr/sports/20231007-coupe-du-monde-de-rugby-la-france-affrontera-l-afrique-du-sud-en-quart-de-finale
  2. The moment I knew: on our first date she said she might die in her 30s; we married the next year Over dinner in the 1980s, Trenna told Greg Mahney about her genetic condition which meant she only had years to live. He decided he wanted to spend whatever time she had left together seen Trenna a couple of times through mutual friends. At first we showed little interest in each other. She was a smoker and I had a beard, traits that were mutually offputting. But in early January 1988, not long after we’d first been introduced, we found ourselves at the same party. She’d given up smoking as a New Year’s resolution and I’d shaved my beard off in exchange for a keg of beer from a mate. We got chatting; it was just small talk. But when Trenna’s friend arrived to give her a lift home, she took it upon herself to write down Trenna’s number on a bus ticket and give it to me. A few days later I called and we arranged to meet at an Indian restaurant. The conversation flowed easily; we shared similar values and were both interested in live music. She seemed to know a lot about bands from the 60s, which was strange – unless she was a few years older than me. When she went to the bathroom I wrestled with my conscience for about half a second then picked up her purse to check her driver’s licence. We were both 30. It turned out she had learned about all these bands from her two older sisters. We started talking about her family, and that was a moment that changed my life. Her story was so amazing to me and so different from my own. It just made me totally fascinated with her. Trenna and Greg Mahney on their wedding day in Perth in 1989 Trenna explained she had a genetic condition called Marfan syndrome. Her mother had it too and died when Trenna was just two. Her father was unable to care for the children and died a few years later himself. She was a ward of the state for 13 years. When she was 15, the children’s home she was living in was closing down and rather than sending her to boarding school, as they might have, they said to her: you’ve got this condition that’s going to kill you before too long, and because of that you’re not likely to find a husband, so you better go off to business school so you can support yourself until the inevitable happens. Both Trenna’s mother and grandmother had died in their early 30s as a result of complications from Marfan syndrome, and she’d been told all her life she was destined for a similar fate. She was sent away to Perth in 1973, totally unsupervised. It’s amazing she didn’t go completely off the rails, but she definitely had a few stories to tell. All of this she revealed on that first date, adding that she expected to die with no warning in the next couple of years. And because of that she wasn’t that interested in getting into any serious kind of relationship. The way she told me about all this wasn’t full of anger or self-pity, it was just so matter-of-fact. I’d come to learn that was the way she looked at life generally. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/oct/08/the-moment-i-knew-on-our-first-date-she-said-she-might-die-in-her-30s-we-married-the-next-year
  3. Mali crisis: Life in Timbuktu and Gao under siege by Islamist fighters People living in cities in Mali under siege by al-Qaeda-linked militants have told the BBC they are facing shortages of food, fuel and medicine, and rapidly rising prices. The blockades have come as fighting intensifies between the army, who are backed by Russian Wagner mercenaries, and both Islamist groups and ethnic Tuareg separatist fighters. For nearly two months, Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) has been trying to completely cut off the historic northern city of Timbuktu, preventing supplies from getting in. "Dozens of trucks loaded with food and goods used to arrive daily in the city, but now, after the siege, nothing comes," said Omar Sidi Muhammad, who lives in the city and works as a journalist. Most of the supplies used to come to Timbuktu from Mauritania and Algeria. "The price of food that was arriving from neighbouring countries doubled," Muhammad said, adding that basic staples like sugar, flour, oil and baby formula had all been affected. "There is a scarcity of fuel and its price has risen by 80%." Prices of basic goods such as cooking oil have soared since the blockade began on Timbuktu The city has also been hit by rocket attacks launched by the militants. "People are afraid but started to get very afraid, terrified, after the latest developments," he added. "Because of the danger, thousands of people had to leave." The UN estimates that 33,000 people have fled. Timbuktu was occupied by Tuareg rebels following an uprising by separatists in 2012, but they were quickly pushed side by al-Qaeda-linked Islamic groups who imposed a strict form of Sharia, or Islamic law, on the city - forcing women to wear full-face veils, banning music and amputating the limbs of criminals. One couple was stoned to death for adultery. So many people fear a repeat if JNIM does succeed in taking the city. After a year of Islamist rule, Malian government forces, backed by French troops, re-took the city. But those French forces have left the country since the army seized power in 2021, and the UN's peacekeeping mission is also pulling out. Gao, the largest city in northern Mali, some 320 km (200 miles) east of Timbuktu, is also being blockaded by JNIM. The militant group tightened its control over the past week, with a local resident, who didn't want to be identified, telling the BBC that a lack of fuel was crippling the city's electricity supply. Pictures sent to the BBC show the normally busy streets of Gao empty Homes are now only getting power for one hour a day. "People are afraid because of the war," the man said. "They are not happy with the rise of the food prices," he said, adding that costs had doubled. "Quite a lot of families have left the city." The city's economy is normally centred around trade with neighbouring Niger and Algeria but the JNIM's actions have caused many merchants to leave the city and left the streets deserted. 'Ready for battle' The blockade of the two cities has come as competing forces in Mali rush to fill the power vacuum caused by the departure of international troops. The UN announced the end to its mission last June and said its forces would gradually leave the country by December, after Mali's military junta refused to extend their remit. This led to both government troops and Tuareg separatist groups vowing to occupy the force's bases which lie in the north of the country, an area which has been under Tuareg control since a 2015 peace deal. Fighting began in August over control of a UN site in the town of Ber and has intensified since then. JNIM has also taken advantage of the chaos to launch its own attacks on government forces. Tuareg groups say they have attacked five government military bases and said in social media posts last month that they aim to take control of the whole of northern Mali, where they want to establish an independent state, called Azawad. At the same time, the military government has vowed to re-take control of the entire country, and on Monday sent a large military convoy towards Kidal, a northern town which is the main Tuareg stronghold. "We consider security throughout the country to be an absolute priority," Col Malick Diaw, a senior figure in the junta, told the interim legislative assembly earlier this month. "We are working together with [the army] to reconquer our lands, which have long been occupied by hordes of barbarians with no faith, law or religion, whose sole aim is to cause suffering and death to innocent people who only aspire to live in peace." Mohamed Mouloude Ramadan, a spokesman for the coalition of Tuareg groups called the CMA, told the BBC: "We will stop them, we've been getting ready for this for a long time." "We're getting more fighters ready for the battle." Regional crisis The conflict is threatening to spread outside Mali and across Africa's Sahel region, as both the government and Tuareg rebels have called for international support. Tuareg groups in Libya, Algeria and Niger have voiced their solidarity for Mali's separatists, with one Nigerien rebel leader calling on fighters "to join them on the front line". Ben Bella, a leader of the Tuareg CMA alliance, told the BBC: "These statements will be followed by the arrival of fighters from Niger, Algeria and Libya to support us in the battle." "This solidarity will confront Russian expansion in the region through the coup governments in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso." Three weeks ago, Mali's junta signed a mutual defence pact with Burkina Faso and Niger, each vowing to help each other against armed rebellions or external aggression, following a threat by other West African countries to use force to restore civilian rule in Niger. All three countries are under military rule, following coups within the past three years. These have led to French military forces, which were providing security assistance against the Islamist insurgency raging in the three neighbours, pulling out of Mali and Burkina Faso, with preparations to leave Niger underway. Mali has since turned to Russia's Wagner mercenary group for military help, and there have been rumours that Niger and Burkina Faso may follow. Dr Alex Vines, director of the Africa programme at the Chatham House think tank, said that with Niger, and especially Burkina Faso, having their own internal security problems, they are unlikely to be able to assist Mali's armed forces. "What this alliance is unable to do is to provide military solidary to each other," he said. He added that Wagner mercenary forces did not appear to be able to fill the gap left by French forces and that "the Russians have been struggling and the Russians are very overstretched, given their commitments elsewhere particularly with the conflict in Ukraine". Dr Vines warned that failing to deal with the crisis in northern Mali "makes the junta in Bamako vulnerable" and there might be another coup "if the military junta fail to respond to the security challenges they are now facing". https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-67027659

  9. Cyberpunk Phantom Liberty (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, Microsoft Windows) Back in 2020, when CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 launched with a disastrous mess of bugs, glitches, and glaring reductions in scope clinging to the code, it seemed likely that the studio would eventually get their sci-fi epic into working shape within a couple years. Phantom Liberty delivers on that promise. Much like The Witcher III’s multiple substantial DLC packs, Phantom Liberty is a brand new expansion set in the grimy streets of Night City, offering about 20 hours of additional content to the already swollen map. CD Projekt Red has recruited Idris Elba and Christine Minji Chang to buoy the primary narrative, which is far more mature — an icy spy thriller, presented with a deft command over its material — compared to the original. Along the way, the company has also ironed out many of the game’s technical issues, as well as an expanded suite of RPG options, tugging the game further away from its rote, first-person shooter roots. Congratulations, Cyberpunk, you’re finally ready for your closeup. Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty $30 BUY AT STEAM

  11. U.S. Lawmakers Want to Block China from 'American' RISC-V Senators Marco Rubio and Mark Warner demand to limit China's access to American RISC-V innovations. Designed to be an open-source instruction set architecture (ISA) that can be used to build processors for every possible purpose, the RISC-V ISA has become quite a ubiquitous technology that can address both artificial intelligence and high-performance computing applications. This is perhaps why some U.S. lawmakers want this open-source technology to be essentially closed from Chinese entities, reports Reuters. "The CCP (Chinese Communist Party) is abusing RISC-V to get around U.S. dominance of the intellectual property needed to design chips. U.S. persons should not be supporting a PRC tech transfer strategy that serves to degrade U.S. export control laws," said Michael McCaul, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, in a statement to Reuters. Tom's Hardware has enquired RISC-V and the Linux Foundation for comment, yet has not received a response. Senators Marco Rubio and Mark Warner urge the U.S. government to limit American tech companies' engagement with RISC-V technology with Chinese entities. They fear China's potential misuse of this collaborative tech for military and strategic advantage, which poses national security. RISC-V is a competitor to Arm's proprietary ISA and is used in various tech devices, from smartphones to advanced AI processors. RISC-V was born out of the University of California, Berkeley's innovative labs, and its development has been under the guardianship of a Swiss nonprofit organization, ensuring its open-source nature remains intact. Yet, the prevalent belief among certain lawmakers is that China is maneuvering this open, collaborative spirit to fortify its semiconductor industry. Their concerns not only touch on economic factors but also the potential military advancements that the People's Republic could harness by mastering this technology. Representative Mike Gallagher has even proposed that any U.S. collaboration with Chinese entities on this front should first secure an export license. This technology's international embrace is evident, with companies from both the East and the West integrating it. China's tech titan, Huawei, views RISC-V as foundational to its chip endeavors. Meanwhile, in the U.S., tech powerhouses like Qualcomm and Google have shown enthusiasm for its potential, emphasizing its transformative capability for the industry. Magnitude However, the proposed constraints have sparked concerns within the tech community. They could jeopardize cooperative work on open tech standards between the U.S. and China if enforced. This could pose challenges to China's ambition to be chip-independent and stunt the global market momentum for better, cheaper chips. The magnitude of potential restrictions can be gauged by a statement from Jack Kang of SiFive, who equated such limitations to barring U.S. tech firms from the digital universe of the internet. The implications stretch beyond mere business metrics, pointing to a larger impact on global tech innovation and leadership. https://www.tomshardware.com/news/us-lawmakers-want-to-block-china-from-american-risc-v
  12. A Chinese media scholar explains the Taoist philosophy behind the WeChat app's design WeChat’s splash screen is visually clean and has been unchanged for a decade. Screen capture by Jianqing Chen Elon Musk's vision of Twitter, now rebranded as X, as an "everything app" is no secret. When the X logo replaced Twitter's blue bird, the internet buzzed with heated discussions about just what it would mean for X to be an everything app. Musk promoted his super app project by referring to the Chinese all-in-one app WeChat. But for many American users unfamiliar with WeChat, a train of questions followed. What's it like to use WeChat? How has WeChat become "everything" in China? Would it be possible to replicate the app's success in the U.S.? I'm a Chinese digital media scholar, and I've used WeChat since 2012. But, in contrast to Musk's enthusiasm, I don't think WeChat is something to write home about. I believe it's ordinary rather than special, lacking distinctive features compared with the other po[CENSORED]r apps I studied for my current book project about Chinese touchscreen media. WeChat's inconspicuousness on my phone screen is no accident. Although WeChat is an everything app in the sense of being a digital hub for over a billion users, the app's design is intentionally grounded in a more nuanced and philosophical meaning of the word "everything" than you might expect. WeChat is an all-inclusive media ecosystem Launched in 2011, WeChat has become an all-in-one app that offers services covering most aspects of everyday life, from instant messaging and mobile payments to photo- and video-sharing social networking. It has become a staple of daily activities for 1.3 billion Chinese mobile users. WeChat is also the app that China-bound travelers can download if they want to install only one app. WeChat can help you fill out customs declaration forms, call a taxi, pay for your hotel room and order food. Without WeChat, a traveler in China would be like a fish out of water, since everything in China now runs through smartphone screens and mobile payment platforms. In this sense, WeChat is indeed an everything app. Its "everythingness" refers to its near omnipresence and omnipotence in everyday life. The app creates an all-encompassing and ever-expanding media ecosystem that influences users' daily activities. It forms a gigantic digital hub that, as German philosopher and media theorist Peter Sloterdijk once described, "has drawn inwards everything that was once on the outside." This "everythingness" leaves little room for rival companies to achieve similar dominance and turns every tap or swipe on a user's smartphone into something a big tech company can profit from. This dream of an internet empire is perhaps what is so enticing for tech leaders like Musk. A counterintuitive design philosophy Despite WeChat's status as an everything app, it's one of the least notable and attractive apps on my smartphone. WeChat rarely changes its logo to celebrate holidays or sends admin notifications to users. The app forms a relatively closed social space, since WeChat users can see only what their contacts post, unlike apps like Weibo or TikTok, where celebrities amass millions of followers. But the lack of flashy, attention-grabbing features is actually one of WeChat's intentional design philosophies, as WeChat's founder and chief developer Allen Xiaolong Zhang made clear in his annual public speeches in 2019 and 2020. Zhang emphasized that one of WeChat's design principles is to "get users out of the app as fast as possible," meaning to reduce the amount of time users spend in WeChat. This might seem paradoxical—if WeChat is trying to get its users to leave the app as fast as possible, how can it maintain its internet empire? Typically an app's po[CENSORED]rity is assessed based on how long users spend in the app, and users' attention is the scarce resource various digital platforms fight for. But Zhang claims that in order to sustain users' daily engagement with the app in the long run, it's important to let them leave the app as fast as possible. A low demand for time and effort is key to bringing users back into the app without exhausting them. A Taoist message behind WeChat's design The design of WeChat miniprograms makes Zhang's idea clear. Miniprograms are embedded into WeChat as third-party developed sub-applications, and they provide users with easy access to a large range of services—like hailing a taxi, ordering food, buying train tickets and playing games—without leaving WeChat. Users can simply search in the app or scan a QR code to open a miniprogram, skipping the cumbersome processes of installing and uninstalling new apps. Miniprograms are stored in a hidden panel at the top of the screen. They can be opened by swiping down the screen. These miniprograms appear to be ephemeral, diffusive and almost atmospheric. They give users the feeling that WeChat has disappeared or merged into the environment. WeChat is what media scholars call "elemental": inconspicuous and nonintrusive, yet pervasive and as fundamental as the natural elements, just like air, water and clouds. This environment of pervasiveness and unobtrusiveness resonates with the ancient Chinese Taoist philosophy that understands nothing (wu 无, or "not-being") as that which forms the basis of all things (wanwu 万物 or "ten thousand things"). As Tao Te Ching states, "Dao begets One (or nothingness), One begets Two (yin and yang), Two begets Three (Heaven, Earth and Man; or yin, yang and breath qi), Three begets all things." For Taoist thinkers, not-being determines how all things within the cosmos come into being, evolve and disappear. Although the depth of these sagely texts is unfathomable, the Taoist thoughts from the past help people appreciate the interplay of everything and nothing. This perspective adds another layer of meaning to "everything" and opens up alternative visions of what an everything app can be. Perhaps WeChat's interpretation of the word "everything"—as simultaneously pervasive and inconspicuous—is the secret to its success over the past 10 years. I believe many tech leaders could benefit from a more sophisticated understanding of "everything" when envisioning the everything app, and not just equate "everything" simply with big and comprehensive. https://techxplore.com/news/2023-10-chinese-media-scholar-taoist-philosophy.html

  16. Recording raises new questions about police response to fatal crash involving Sen. Bob Menendez's wife Multiple sources are asking why a retired chief of detectives for the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office showed up at the crash scene to apparently assist Nadine Menendez. Police dashcam video and audio recordings are raising new questions about how local police and Bergen County prosecutors handled the 2018 fatal crash investigation involving a woman who soon married New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez. Dashcam video from the scene that evening in Bogota, N.J., shows Nadine Arslanian Menendez saying that she done nothing wrong. At one point, she also asks an officer about the pedestrian who she had just struck and killed, “Why was the guy in the middle of the street?” Several sources familiar with the matter are asking why a retired chief of detectives for the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office showed up at the crash scene to apparently speak to police and assist Nadine Menendez. The sources pointed to one section of the police dashboard video footage where retired the retired chief, Michael Mordaga, is heard asking police what is going on. An officer replies, “That’s what we are gathering now … [it’s] dark… her breath, ya know?” Police reports have suggested there was no signs that Nadine Arslsanian Menendez was driving while impaired at the time of the crash. Police reports also show that no Breathalyzer or other tests were performed on Menendez that night. “One can imagine police ordering someone to at least perform field sobriety tests just based on those words and observations alone,” said NBC legal analyst Danny Cevallos. Investigators said the victim, Richard Kopp, 49, had jaywalked after drinking with friends on the night that Nadine Menendez hit him with her Mercedes. As NBC News first reported, the state attorney general is now investigating whether police and Bergen county prosecutors handled the fatal crash scene appropriately. Nadine Menendez’s connection to the death of Richard Koop has come to light only this week. Mrs. Menendez’s lawyer, David Schertler, said in a statement, “This is a case of a tragic accident, but Nadine Menendez was not at fault, did not violate any laws, and was therefore not charged with any crimes. Schertler added, "We are confident that any 're-opening' of an investigation into the accident will confirm that conclusion.” https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/recording-raises-new-questions-police-response-fatal-crash-involving-s-rcna119311
  17. Domestic dog: essential facts about man's best friend Humans and dogs have been sharing life for millennia, it is not clear how this alliance was forged, but there is no doubt that they have formed a good society. The dog was probably the first animal to be domesticated. And it has accompanied human beings for about 10,000 years. Some scientists claim that all dogs, both domestic and wild, have a common ancestor in the small wolf of Southeast Asia, but there is no scientific consensus on their ancestors or exactly how an ancient alliance between humans and canids occurred. Today, men have crossed hundreds of breeds of domestic dogs, some of which could never survive in the wild. Despite the great diversity of breeds, shapes and sizes, all domestic dogs, whether Labradors, German Shepherds, Poodles or Chihuahuas, are members of the same species: Canis lupus familiaris. Although their way of life is domestic, they are related to wolves, jackals - with which they can have fertile offspring - and foxes, whose interbreeding is rarer. Domestic dogs still share many behavioral patterns with their wild relatives. Both defend their territories and mark them by urinating on trees, stones, fences and other appropriate places. These signals inform other dogs that that territory is occupied by another animal. Many dogs also bury bones or favorite toys with the intention of saving them for the future, just as their wild relatives sometimes bury their dead prey to ensure a feast later. Dogs communicate with each other in different ways. One of them is leaving traces of smell, another is physical gestures. Body posture, the way you move, and facial expression often express direct messages. Many of these signals are recognizable even to humans, who know that a dog is happy when he wags his tail happily in circles or that he is angry or feels threatened when he shows his teeth. Vocally, dogs communicate through a cacophony of sounds that includes barking, growling, and howling. Furthermore, many studies have shown that dogs can understand humans even without having been trained to do so. Furthermore, they have adapted their language to communicate things to us, even with their own interests. It is this capacity for two-way communication - they send us messages that we understand and vice versa - is one of the keys to such a long and prosperous evolution between humans and dogs. https://www.nationalgeographic.es/animales/perro-domestico
  18. Toyota’s US-based design studio Calty (yes, the name is just a mash-up of the words California and Toyota) is celebrating its 50th birthday this year, and its present to itself is this fantastic Baby Lunar Cruiser concept. Better than a pair of novelty socks, that’s for sure. The BLC is “built to conquer rugged terrain on Earth and beyond” says Toyota, although it’s only a concept for now so it’s restricted to doing that in the virtual world. Still, it is an extremely cool thing. And despite the futuristic, extra-terrestrial looks we can clearly see the influences of the original FJ40 Land Cruiser. Pretty neat. We’re told that Calty wanted to blend those classic 4x4 vibes with “the futuristic capabilities of an interplanetary exploration vehicle” and that the BLC also draws some of its inspiration from the real-life Lunar Cruiser that’s being developed by Toyota for the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). https://www.topgear.com/car-news/electric/toyota-baby-lunar-cruiser-a-moon-buggy-inspired-original-fj40-land-cruiser
  19. The form of Kylian Mbappé and his performance during the slap received Wednesday in C1 by PSG on the Newcastle lawn (4-1) raised some questions. Enough to annoy Luis Enrique. With only three victories on the clock after seven days of the championship, Paris Saint-Germain is having one of its worst starts to the season under the QSI era. And if the capital club is currently only fifth, it is perhaps also because its star striker has not been in the best form lately. Because even if he is the current top scorer in the championship with seven goals, Kylian Mbappé has seemed a little behind in recent days, first against Clermont (0-0), then against Newcastle last Wednesday, in the part of the group stage of the Champions League (4-1 defeat). Left injured on September 24 during the “Classique” won by Paris against OM (4-0), Mbappé apparently struggled to get back on track and the criticism was quick to appear . Enough to make Luis Enrique react. https://www.sports.fr/football/ligue-1/mbappe-luis-enrique-sagace-765839.html
  20. This summer two 17-year olds started a blog to answer their peers’ most common problems. Then it took on a life of its own… ia Sugimoto and Sophia Rundle, both 17, met in their freshman year at high school in Washington State, four years ago. They had mutual interests, such as hanging out; they both really liked going to the beach. When they talk about it, I get a Technicolor flash of the intensity of teenage friendships: because it’s not really about the beach, it’s about what they talked about at the beach. Adult affiliations are so functional by comparison. Barely two months ago, Sugimoto had an idea: to start Girlhood, an advice site where teenage girls helped other teenage girls with their dilemmas. “It came from the Barbie movie,” she says. “I felt a feeling of comfort, a safe space around me full of girls, women from my age to their 80s, all crying.” Within three weeks, they had had 20,000 advice submissions, 8 million views, and 85,000 people had followed them on TikTok. “We’ve had over 6,000 people who want to volunteer,” Sugimoto says, which is fortunate as they couldn’t possibly do it all themselves. Indeed, they are both by necessity now mainly in operations, and the volunteer army does the wisdom. They are not registered advice-givers, they stress. “We’re not going to give advice on eating disorders, sexual assault, things like that,” Rundle says. We don’t want to harm our volunteers or the people we’re giving advice to.” Instead, the submissions are the elemental questions of becoming an adult: am I doing this right? Do I have enough friends, am I nice enough to them, are they nice enough to me? How do I get over this guy, or get him back, or get rid of him, or trust him? Am I achieving enough, or am I destined to be a failure? Despite the international reach – they have had messages from Sweden, New Zealand and a number of Asian and African countries – the first volunteer inquiry was from the UK. “A lot of girls have issues that are very similar to ours,” Sugimoto says. Rundle adds: “We both wanted to create a website that encompassed the spirit of big‑sister advice: you can talk to us because we’ve had experiences similar to the ones you’re going through.” If there’s anything dispiriting about reading the problems, it’s how many of them speak to a power imbalance between girls and boys: a lot of heaviness about boys seemingly swimming in and out of relationships without a care in the world, while girls have tried everything to get over them, and are out of ideas. I thought gen Z had somehow reshuffled the deck on who held all the cards. Rundle and Sugimoto both shoot me a look of great patience, before Rundle explains: “We try not to get into the realm of activism, but the submissions are extremely telling about society. Women, psychologically, have a harder time getting over guys, that’s what I’ve seen in Girlhood and in general.” Their advice usually boils down to: “You’ll get over him when you stop thinking about him.” It emphatically doesn’t go with: “Get fake eyelashes and flirt with his best friend”. Other problems a gen X could guess at but not remember: the mind-bending insecurities created by everyone else on social media looking so happy, all the goddam time. It creates all these anxieties; how come you only have three friends, when everyone else has 26? How are you ever going to get into a top university, when that person just hand-reared a panda? “Behind every photo and every post, there’s a deeper meaning,” Sugimoto says. “There’s definitely a facade,” Rundle adds. “For the most part, there would be so much more that is hidden: one person who really doesn’t want to be there; an argument that broke out right after the smiling. People are constantly comparing themselves without knowing the reality of what they are comparing themselves with. Part of what Girlhood stands for is a corner of social media that isn’t intoxicated by trying to be someone you aren’t.” But there’s something else that we, attendant adults, probably could remember if we made more effort. “Adults constantly hold this idea, ‘We’re so much more mature, smarter’, but so many of them forget the visceral feelings that come up when people go through these challenges. It can be heart-shattering. So parents will give you their perspective, their advice, and it’s super bland. If we had one message to tell to adults, if they want to understand the purpose of Girlhood, is that it’s OK not to remember how you felt years and years ago.” It’s OK, that is, to be super bland: but don’t be surprised when your teens get their wisdom elsewhere. https://www.theguardian.com/society/2023/oct/07/teen-girl-problems-being-solved-by-adolescent-agony-aunts-girlhood
  21. Former football star George Weah is running for a second six-year term as Liberia's president, but he appears to have scored an own goal by failing to engage with the topic that is dominating the air waves and mood on the streets - demands to set up an economic and war crimes court. The 57-year-old came into power promising to create jobs, transform lives and set up the court. But after taking office in 2018 he argued that looking backwards at old crimes would not be the best way to achieve development - something 24-year-old Frederick Tulay feels is a mistake. "As a first-time voter in 2017, I believed President Weah. But he has refused to address corruption in the public sector. Many of the youth are using drugs because they are jobless," he told the BBC, saying he would not be voting this time for Mr Weah and his Congress for Democratic Change party. Frederick Tulay, who voted for George Weah in the last election, says the president has let him down Mr Tulay lost his job in a factory for a construction firm two years ago when his former employer could no longer pay his salary. He now works as a taxi driver but business is not flourishing: "The roads are very bad and gas is expensive. My dream is to leave the country." His comments reflect a commonly felt anger - that 20 years after the end of the country's brutal two civil wars, in which an estimated 250,000 died, most people are still struggling to survive. The country operates a dual currency system, meaning those paid in Liberian dollars often need to pay for imported food or other items in US dollars - making life extremely expensive. Two financial scandals over the last few years have also shocked Liberians, leading to the US imposing sanctions on several officials, including Mr Weah's chief of staff. For 49-year-old Peterson Sonyah, failing to address the wounds of the past has led to this culture of impunity. The survivor of a horrific civil war massacre at a church in the capital, Monrovia, he now spends his time campaigning for the perpetrators of the civil wars, and those who profited financially from them, to be prosecuted. As a 16-year-old he sought refuge in the church with his father, who was one of around 600 killed by soldiers in 1990. "When the soldiers ran out of ammunition, some of them went to get more so people tried to escape but the soldiers started attacking them with machetes," he remembers as he points at bullet holes on the windows at St Peter's Lutheran Church. Peterson Sonyah says returning to St Peter's Lutheran Church is a haunting experience The need for a court is urgent, he maintains: "Some people are already telling me that since there's no justice, we should take up arms and start waging war against the people. "They believe if we did that, in the future we would get lucrative jobs and live the best lives because they are seeing the example. We are all human beings, people can get tempted." Nineteen other candidates are challenging Mr Weah for the presidency next Tuesday, including former Vice-President Joseph Boakai, businessman Alexander Cummings and human rights lawyer Tiawan Gongloe. These three contenders have pledged to set up the court if elected - though some have expressed doubts about Mr Boakai's commitment, given his alliance with former warlord Prince Yormie Johnson, now a serving senator. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-67017365
