Democrats wrestle with the Biden conundrum Analysis: Voters have concerns about President Joe Biden’s age. Biden’s team has been unwilling to answer those worries. Amid all of the news and issues on the top of political minds, there is one non-versation that continues to dominate: Can Joe Biden do this again? I call it a “non-versation” because the folks wringing their hands the most about whether Biden is up to the task of winning in 2024 are people who, in many cases, have already endorsed him for re-election. A few even work directly for him — and are still having the same uneasy feeling as they watch Donald Trump methodically consolidate Republican support while a right-wing information ecosystem turns the Biden brand into the Clinton brand circa 2016. Ultimately, Democrats in Washington — in both the executive and the legislative branches — share the same concern voters have been expressing for the last six months: They fear voters can’t be convinced Biden is up to the job, and they don’t have confidence the team around Biden fully appreciates the concern. The caveats before this non-versation are all very similar. “He’s really done a remarkable job, given the circumstances,” goes a common one. The handwringing after the various caveats are set aside all has the same sound to it, too, with answers hidden in questions like: “Do you think he looks too old?” Team Biden has tried to brush off the concern, pointing to the unpo[CENSORED]rity of the last two Democratic presidents at this same moment in their presidencies — before they went on to win re-election. Reagan had a brief moment in 1984 when it appeared the age issue could become a problem, but he joked his way out of it and did enough campaigning to reassure the country he was up to it. Of course, given all we learned about Reagan’s health in his second term, perhaps there should have been more of a rigorous debate about his abilities, in hindsight. Still, all three examples — Obama, Clinton and Reagan — are reassuring historical points that offer potential Biden parallels. But one of the worst afflictions that can affect the political class and the Washington media class at times is “been there, done that disease.” Just because something happened a certain way the last time doesn’t mean things will turn out the same way this time. And yet, an overreliance on historical precedent can delude the normally intelligent mind. At the end of the day, it could turn out that negative feelings about Trump and anger at the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision on abortion are enough to secure Biden’s re-election. It’s probably the most likely formula, given what we are witnessing in just about every election held since the Dobbs decision. But while the power of the abortion issue might save Biden, it’s separate from the question of whether he owes the public a better picture of his ability to do the job. So far, Team Biden has decided not to accept the premise of the age question. It publicly chalks it up to the media, even going so far as to say the media should stop asking about it in polls. There’s a naive belief among some Biden partisans that if you don’t mention his age, it won’t be an issue. In the real world, concern about Biden’s age is an issue, and the voters are screaming it. Every reputable pollster who has asked has found more than 50% of registered Democrats want a primary campaign. The numbers stem from a simple fact: A number of Biden supporters were never enamored with him but saw him as the safest way to get rid of Trump. When you look at these numbers, it’s as if Democrats are ready to hand Biden a gold watch and thank him for beating Trump, making Congress slightly more functioning and expanding NATO — and call it a legacy. So what will it take to fire up Democrats for Biden? The best elixir for him could well be a primary challenge. The best way to disprove the age and ability issue is to run an active campaign, something Biden has yet to do. This advice may be easier to give than receive. For one thing, Team Biden will remind any skeptic like me that running a “Rose Garden”-style campaign from his Delaware home in 2020 worked, though there’s a counterclaim about whether he would have won by more — or had longer coattails — with a more robust campaign. Biden partisans also argue that his focus on democracy instead of inflation in the midterms was the right call, given his party’s overperformance against the GOP. This surprising discovery turns everything we knew about turtles upside down. An unexpected observation about one of the rarest turtles on Earth reveals that cold-blooded reptiles may have more complex social bonds than we thought. Paddling a canoe down a murky Belizean river at dawn, Don McKnight and Jaren Serano heard the sound of the Central American river turtle, known locally as the hicatee. A hydrophone placed in the water detected the movements of the reptiles, which had sonic transmitters attached to their shells. The results surprised them: the turtles swam together through the river and, in some cases, they did not separate themselves even a meter from their peers. "It was like following a group of whales," says McKnight, an ecologist at LaTrobe University in Australia and the Turtle Ecology Laboratory in Belize. These social turtles could dramatically change how we think of supposedly solitary animals, he says. It was previously thought that turtles gathered together when searching for the same resource, such as a sunny rock, but they generally did not interact with each other. In the recent research, however, the turtles seemed to be looking for company. "It was very nice to see," says Serano, a master's student in the Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation at the University of Florida (United States). What's more, the scientists' study, published this week in the journal Animal Behavior, may help conservationists protect this critically endangered species, which has declined throughout its range of Belize, Mexico and Guatemala. As it’s pastry free, it’s lovely and light. It is also very versatile: substitute the zucchini for everything from grated pumpkin or sweet potato to any cheese, or just use zucchini without the eggs and cheese. Enjoy it hot or cold, as a main or as part of a meze platter. Serves 6 4 zucchinis, grated 1 tsp salt 4 tbsp Greek‑style yoghurt 3 eggs 2 spring onions, chopped 20g chopped mint (1 cup) 60g chopped dill (1 cup) 30g chopped flat‑leaf parsley (1 cup) 90g plain flour 1 tbsp baking powder 200g Greek feta, crumbled 4 tsp extra‑virgin olive oil 100g breadcrumbs Place the grated zucchini in a colander, cover with salt and set aside to drain for two hours. Once drained, use your hands to squeeze out any remaining juice. Preheat the oven to 180C. Combine drained zucchini and all the remaining ingredients (except for the oil and breadcrumbs) in a bowl, stirring gently with a wooden spoon to create a thick batter. Season with salt and pepper. Grease a 30cm round cake tin with two teaspoons of olive oil and sprinkle two tablespoons of breadcrumbs over the base of the tin (this will help prevent sticking). You will find this dish everywhere in Greece, from cafes and restaurants to bakeries and delis, but the region of Epirus in the north-west is where the most renowned iterations of spanakopita come from. The traditional way is to make your own phyllo pastry – this is a work of love, as it takes time and care but creates a texture and taste that store-bought phyllo just cannot replicate. However, you can definitely use store-bought pastry if you prefer. You will need to begin this recipe two hours ahead to prove the dough and prepare the filling. Serves 8 For the dough 1.6 kg special white flour, farina flour or 00 plain flour, plus extra for dusting 2 tbsp extra‑virgin olive oil, plus extra for greasing 750ml lukewarm water (3 cups) 1 tbsp sugar ¼ tsp vinegar ½ tsp salt 50g melted butter, for greasing For the filling 250g spinach, roughly chopped 250g silverbeet, roughly chopped 2 tbsp salt 10g mint, finely chopped (½ cup) 15g flat‑leaf parsley, finely chopped (½ cup) 30g dill, finely chopped (½ cup) 2 tbsp extra‑virgin olive oil 1 onion, finely diced 1 leek, finely chopped 1 bunch spring onions, finely chopped 250g Greek feta 2 eggs, beaten For the glaze 1 egg yolk 1 tsp cold water To make the dough, place the flour into a large bowl and make a well. Add the olive oil, water, sugar, vinegar and salt. Mix together using your hands or a wooden spoon. Turn out the dough on to a lightly floured surface and knead for about five minutes until the dough is soft and it bounces back when you press into it with your fingers. Place dough in a large oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap and set aside in a warm place for two hours. While the dough is proving, prepare your filling. Combine the spinach, silverbeet, salt and herbs in a bowl and set aside for two hours (the salt will draw out the liquid from the greens). Heat the olive oil in a frying pan over a low heat and fry the onion for two minutes. Add the leek and fry for a further five minutes. Add the spring onion and cook for a further two minutes. After the spinach mixture has rested for two hours, squeeze the mixture well and discard the juices (do not wash). Place in a bowl, add the feta and egg and stir to combine. Add the cooked onion and leek mixture, stir to combine, season with pepper and set aside. Preheat the oven to 180C and grease a 30cm square baking tray with melted butter. Turn out the dough again on to a lightly floured surface and knead for a further one to two minutes until the dough is smooth. Divide into eight equal‑sized balls of dough. Using a rolling pin, roll out each dough ball to the size of a small pizza. Place the dough into two piles of four doughs each, stacked on top of each other like pancakes. Roll each stack of dough out into the widest and longest rectangular shape that you can to cover the baking tray, plus some overhang. You will need to use your fingers to pull the edges of the phyllo dough gently to stretch out its size and be careful not to tear it. There is no evidence that the diploma Nigeria's President Bola Ahmed Tinubu submitted to the country's electoral commission was forged, the BBC's Global Disinformation Team has found. Allegations that President Tinubu's certificates were faked went viral on social media following the release by Chicago State University (CSU) of his academic records last week. We have looked at some of the most widely circulated claims. The release of the president's academic documents is the culmination of a judicial case filed in August by one of his main rivals in February's presidential election, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Mr Abubakar was hoping to have the victor disqualified after accusing him of falsifying the CSU diploma of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration awarded in 1979 that he submitted to the electoral authority (Inec). To obtain evidence for his case in Nigeria, Mr Abubakar approached a US court in August, requesting it to compel CSU to release Mr Tinubu's academic records through a process called discovery, where the parties exchange information including documents ahead of a trial. Mr Tinubu's lawyers opposed the discovery application, citing privacy concerns, but the US court decided it should proceed. The documents requested by Mr Abubakar were: A copy of any diploma issued by CSU in 1979 A copy of the diploma CSU gave to Mr Tinubu in 1979 Copies of diplomas with the same font, seal, signatures, and wording awarded to other students that are similar to what CSU awarded to Mr Tinubu in 1979 Documents from CSU that were certified by Jamar Orr, who was then a staff member of CSU, in the 12 months from 1 August 2022 In response to request one, CSU submitted seven diplomas covering different disciplines with the names of the students redacted. According to the university's registrar, these diplomas had not been collected by the students. In response to request two, CSU stated that it could not find the diploma they issued to Mr Tinubu in 1979, because they do not keep copies of diplomas already collected by students. In response to request three, CSU stated that it produced for Mr Tinubu a replacement diploma dated 27 June 1979. It also released diplomas awarded to other students that bore similar font, seal, signatures and wordings as Mr Tinubu's diplomas. In response to request four, CSU submitted other academic documents initially attested to and released by Mr Orr. In line with the judge's ruling, Mr Abubakar's lawyer Angela Liu last week questioned Caleb Westberg, CSU's current registrar, in a deposition. The BBC was given access to the deposition transcript by Mr Abubakar's spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu. Some social media users in Nigeria allege that the deposition and the diplomas released by CSU confirm that the diploma submitted to Inec by Mr Tinubu was forged.
