Today we bring you the analysis of the Orange Premium WiFi Repeater. This repeater was announced last April, and is designed to work in harmony with the Livebox Fiber or Livebox + that both Orange and Jazztel use. The key to this repeater is that it has smart WiFi, so it integrates with our WiFi network so that it is our device that automatically changes access points without having to do anything. And it works whether you're an Orange customer or a Jazztel customer.
Technical characteristics of the Orange Premium WiFi Repeater
The Orange Premium WiFi Repeater offers speeds up to 1700 Mbps via WiFi 802.11 ac (WiFi 5), with six internal antennas. The complete hardware features are:

Unboxing and external analysis
The box shows in broad strokes the main characteristics of the repeater and a view of all sides of it. When we open it we find the instruction manual, the repeater, a Cat.5e Ethernet cable and the power cable.
The repeater is quite thin, and the fact that we can place it vertically gives us a greater versatility so that it occupies less space and we can place it on a shelf where it looks like another book (yes, with two lights always on).
On the front of the repeater we find 4 LED indicators and the WPS button, which in descending order represent:
Power (on or off)
Quality of the connection between the repeater and the router
WPS status
Mode: repeater, access point or client
In the back we find:
Reset button
Two Gigabit Ethernet RJ45 ports
The turn on and turn off button
Power connector
On the side of the router we also have an orange LED. We can adjust the lighting in Normal, Reduced or Only Front, in which the side light is completely turned off.
In the lower part we find the configuration label, with the WiFi password of the repeater, the local IP address to access it, the MAC address, etc. We also see the Arcadyan logo. As confirmed by Orange, the repeater currently only works with the Liveboxes manufactured by Arcadyan. If we have it from another manufacturer we will have to wait a bit to make it compatible, or ask the operator before buying it.
WiFi Repeater Mode
The configuration process is really simple, regardless of whether we do it to put the repeater in WiFi amplifier mode, or if we are using it as an extender. To pair it with WiFi we have to have the router and the repeater in the same room. After waiting for a few minutes to start, the Mode LED will remain fixed. The lights will be Power in green, Sign in red and Mode in orange.
At that moment, we press the WPS button for one second, and the orange light will start blinking. There, we press the WPS button of the router and the Wi-Fi light will also start blinking. Both will be synchronized and the router will restart. From there it will work correctly in repeater mode and we can take it to the part we want from home. The signal LED will be orange if it receives little WiFi signal, and red if it is not connected.
In this mode we can also connect an Ethernet cable to the repeater, although the signal will continue to go through WiFi between the repeater and the router. In case you are only going to use the Ethernet mode, you can deactivate the WiFi replay by pressing the WPS button for 15 seconds. To activate it, it is necessary to press the reset button.
WiFi extender mode (or access point)
The second option that we have at our disposal is to use the WiFi Premium Repeater as WiFi extender. For this, we have to take an Ethernet cable from the router to the room where we want to place it. We connect it, and the configuration process will be done automatically. When the Access Point mode is activated, the blue light will turn on.
From there, we can plug another device via Ethernet to the second connector of the repeater as if we were connecting directly to the router, in addition to enjoying all the power of a WiFi connection without any loss.
In both the repeater mode and the extender mode we have the option of creating an independent WiFi network, or integrate it into the intelligent WiFi of the Livebox Fiber. Thanks to this, the WiFi device that we connect will automatically change network when we are closer to the router or the repeater (as is the case of a smartphone).
In the case of wanting to make any adjustment of the repeater, we have to access the IP address http://192.168.250.250. Once we have paired it with the router, access will be through 192.168.1.1 on the router panel, or it may also be assigned a new local IP address that can be consulted on the same router. In this repeater panel we can consult data about the network and know what devices are connected to it.
In any case, through WiFi smart WiFi network will be the same in the eyes of the device we connect, with the same SSID and the same password.
Speed tests
In access point mode, with Ethernet cable, the speed given by the repeater is the promised, reaching speeds of up to 1 Gigabit if we transfer files locally. In the case of the speed of the optical fiber, the speed it offers is exactly the same as if we connect it directly to the router, as we can see in the next two images with the 600 Mbps symmetric without any kind of problem in both cases.
In the case of WiFi, the values already vary more and depend on the quality of the card that your computer, laptop, tablet or any other device has. The speed values are identical to those offered by the Livebox Fiber in the same distance. The ones we have obtained have been the following:
WiFi on the mobile next to the router: 216 Mbps download / 150 Mbps upload
WiFi in the mobile in the room next to the repeater with a partition in the middle: 190 Mbps downlink / 112 Mbps upstream
WiFi on the laptop next to the router: 286 Mbps download / 447 Mbps upload
WiFi in the laptop in the room next to the repeater with a partition in the middle: 283 Mbps download / 206 Mbps upload
The best extender offered by an operator in Spain?
When buying a WiFi repeater, you must take into account where you want to place it, what use you are going to give it, and if it can be integrated directly with your router. The repeaters that Spanish operators sell for their routers are as complete as we can find, since they offer everything we need.
In the case of Orange's Premium WiFi Repeater, it is completely adapted to the needs of Livebox Fiber users, as is my case. In a house with four floors, the router is in the second, so the WiFi is quite attenuated to the fourth floor, where I have an Ethernet for the computer. It is that Ethernet cable that I have connected to the repeater, and in turn allows me to take another Ethernet cable to the PC, also having WiFi at maximum speed in the room. And all under a single WiFi network.
One of the few drawbacks that we find is that sometimes the Wi-Fi network does not change automatically when we change floors, although as a rule this is not usually the case. It may not be hooked to the other when we change plants immediately, but after a few minutes the change is usually made automatically without having to turn off and turn on the mobile's WiFi or having to select the network we want to connect to.
