  1. The virtual concept car, designed to appear in Gran Turismo, uses the V-6 from Ferrari's new Le Mans competitor and three electric motors. Virtual concept cars are all the rage these days. We've seen fully digital Vision Gran Turismo designs from the likes of Jaguar, McLaren, Audi, and more. Now, Ferrari is finally stepping up with a Vision Gran Turismo of its own. Titled simply the Ferrari Vision Gran Turismo, the fully virtual concept car is a center-positioned single-seater race car designed specifically to appear in PlayStation's series of Gran Turismo video games. Ferrari says it uses an even more potent version of the twin-turbo V-6 powering the company's newest Le Mans competitor, the 499P, along with three electric motors, one for the rear axle and two for each front wheels. Thanks to a lack of real-world sporting regulations, total output is an incredible 1336 hp. And that's not all. From the release: The bodyshell of the Ferrari Vision Gran Turismo appears as if suspended over the flat, carbon-fiber underbody which incorporates all the car’s technical components, thus giving purity to the shape. The chassis is designed to emphasize the car's lateral dynamics in on-the-limit handling. The powertrain layout guarantees an optimal front-rear weight balance and an extremely low center of gravity to the benefit of the AWD. The elasto-kinematic suspension setup was developed around the performance characteristics of the tires used in Gran Turismo together with the car’s aerodynamic balance, the aim being to guarantee superlative performance on both torturously winding city circuits and traditional endurance race tracks. According to Ferrari, it's used its experience in Formula 1 to ensure the battery for the electric motors is always in a full state of charge, whether you're setting an ultra-fast qualifying lap or doing a handful of consecutive laps at once. The Ferrari Vision Gran Turismo will become available to all users starting on December 23, 2022. One Gran Turismo user will have the chance to drive the car one week early, however, as all GT7 players will be able to participate in a viewers' campaign quiz for a chance to be gifted the car in-game on December 15. On that same date, Ferrari will reveal a full-size replica of the Vision Gran Turismo, to be displayed at the Ferrari Museum in Maranello through March 2023. link: https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a42085040/ferrari-vision-gran-turismo-concept-revealed/

  2. Their eyes met in a Casablanca bar – and when pianist Giuseppe, 43, invited Eve, 46, to sing on stage, a new duo was born. They plan to marry next spring When Eve travelled to Morocco in January 2020, she was looking forward to an escape. “I was living in Michigan and studying for a doctorate in diversity and equity in education. The trip was part of my class,” she says. Her first stop was Casablanca, where she decided to visit Rick’s Cafe, a renowned music hotspot. “It was really crowded but with a great energy. It was full of people from all over the world,” she says. She loved listening to the jazz band, and, as the venue got quieter, she was able to get closer to the stage. It was then that Eve spotted Giuseppe, who had been playing piano. “I turned around and he was smiling so widely – the kind of smile you usually only see small kids make,” she says. Giuseppe, from Italy, was working as a vocalist and pianist at a hotel in Casablanca, but enjoyed playing jazz in his spare time. He was captivated by Eve and went over to introduce himself, asking if she was a musician too. “I don’t know how, but I sensed her musical aura, and it felt like I immediately connected with her soul,” he says. “It is the most open that I’ve ever felt.” When she told him she did sing, he invited her on stage to jam with him. “I felt so comfortable with him straight away,” says Eve. “We moved to the piano and played continuously for 30 minutes.” The pair were mesmerised by each other and, at the end of evening, Eve gave Giuseppe her card in the hope they might meet again. Before she left to go back to her hotel, they shared a hug. “I didn’t want to let go. We stayed for a long time, just holding each other,” she says. For Giuseppe, it felt like there was a higher force bringing them together. “I’d been single for a long time and praying to God to help me find my wife,” he says. They met again a few days later in Rabat. “I was on the next leg of my trip and he met me at one of his favourite cafes,” says Eve. The pair chatted for several hours and Giuseppe says the magic between them just “continued to grow”. Before Eve flew home two weeks later, they met once more at a hotel in Rabat. “Then he took me to the airport to say goodbye,” says Eve. They stayed in touch through WhatsApp but, before they could make plans to see each other again, the pandemic hit. With Eve locked down in the US and Giuseppe in Morocco, their relationship developed through regular Skype calls. In the summer, Giuseppe returned to Italy, but they couldn’t meet until September. “We went to Dublin, as it was the only country we could both enter,” he says. Since then, they have travelled whenever possible to see each other, and plan to marry in the spring. “We are just waiting for Giuseppe’s visa, so he can move here,” says Eve. Eve loves how warm and caring her partner is. “I’ve learned how to be more open because he is. He also has this remarkable ability to be tough, but sweet at the same time.” Giuseppe believes their relationship was meant to be. “Eve is incredibly gifted. I love the depth of her sensitivity, intelligence, and generosity,” he says. “I get to experience what it truly means to be loved.” link: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2022/nov/28/how-we-met-we-shared-a-hug-and-i-didnt-want-to-let-go

  3. Protests against Covid restrictions which erupted over the weekend appear to have died down, as a heavy police presence is reported in Chinese cities. Large barriers have gone up along the main protest road in Shanghai and police have made several arrests. They have been stopping people taking photos of the protests and deleting pictures on their devices. Nationwide protests grew after a fire in a high-rise block in Urumqi, western China, killed 10 people on Thursday. It is widely believed residents could not escape the blaze because of Covid restrictions, but local authorities have disputed this. A BBC journalist was detained while covering a protest in Shanghai on Sunday. Ed Lawrence was beaten and kicked by the police during his arrest, and held for several hours before being released. UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly tweeted that the arrest was "deeply disturbing". China remains the only major economy with a strict zero-Covid policy, with local authorities clamping down on even small outbreaks with mass testing, quarantines and snap lockdowns. Many images of anti-lockdown protests have emerged from Shanghai and the capital Beijing, as well as other major urban areas like Chengdu and Wuhan. Censorship has gone into overdrive on Chinese social media platforms since the weekend's protests, to stop people seeing and discussing them. Tens of millions of posts have been filtered from search results, while media are muting their coverage of Covid in favour of upbeat stories about the World Cup and China's space achievements. Dozens of protesters gathered in central Hong Kong on Monday, and at the campus of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, in a show of solidarity with demonstrations across China. China's vaccine problem While China developed its own Covid vaccines, they are not as good as the mRNA technology - such as the Pfizer and Moderna shots - used elsewhere. Two doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine gives 90% protection against severe disease or death vs 70% with China's Sinovac. China sticks with zero-Covid: Why? BBC journalist detained during China protests Blank paper becomes the symbol of China's protests The vaccines have also not been given to enough people. Far too few of the elderly - who are most likely to die from Covid - have been immunised. There is also very little "natural immunity" from people surviving infections as a consequence of stopping the virus in its tracks. It means new variants spread far more quickly than the virus that emerged three years ago and there is a constant risk of it being imported from countries that are letting the virus spread. The Chinese government has not acknowledged the protests or responded in any formal way. They pose an unprecedented political challenge for Chinese President Xi Jinping, with the country watching as to how he will respond. Large numbers of protesters have been holding up blank sheets of paper - a tactic to protest while avoiding censorship or arrest. But others have gone much further, and directly called on Mr Xi to stand down. Despite heavy censorship, news of the demonstrations, videos and pictures have been spreading through social media and messaging apps. The leading Chinese dissident artist and filmmaker, Ai Weiwei, likened China's strict Covid policies to the country's 1990 public health scandal in the province of Henan where people had been making money by selling blood, which led to hundreds of thousands becoming infected with HIV. Mr Ai, an outspoken critic the Chinese government, said there were lots of similarities in terms of government attempts to control information. "A zero-Covid policy only can happen in China or North Korea... and the government never lets people know exactly the truth," he told the BBC's PM programme. "The economy is collapsing, young people have no jobs and students have no future, the graduates cannot find a job so that creates a lot of reason for these kind of protests." link: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-63785351

  4. The HCP report highlighted the “heavy burden” that violence against women poses on society. Rabat - Morocco’s High Commission for Planning (HCP) has estimated that the cost of violence against women across the country sits at around MAD 2.58 billion ($268 million) a year. HCP shared the data in a joint report with the UN Women's office in Morocco. Titled “Economic Cost of Violence Against Girls and Women: Household Expenditures and Loss of Income,” the report provided for the first time in Morocco the cost of violence against women. Published on Saturday, the report indicated that the cost of violence against women averages at around MAD 957 per victim. The report was based on a national survey that HCP carried out between February and July 2019. Direct costs include expenses needed to access services (healthcare or justice), accommodation, and the replacement of damaged goods. Meanwhile, indirect costs include loss of income due to absence from work. Direct costs make up an 82% overwhelming majority of the economic cost of violence against women, while indirect costs constitute 18%. Read also: UN Report: Over 5 Women Killed Every Hour by Family or Partner in 2021 The report highlighted the “heavy burden” that the economic cost of violence against women poses on society. Violence from a woman's spouse costs households a giant MAD 1.98 billion (69.6%). Meanwhile, the cost of violence against women from family members is estimated at 366.6 million MAD (12.9%), while violence in the public sphere costs around 447.6 million MAD (15.7%). Violence in the workplace makes up 1.7% while violence in the place of education makes up 0.1%. The report added that 85.7% of costs are linked to physical violence and sexual violence made up 15.3% of costs. The cost of violence against women in urban areas costs MAD 2.05 billion (72%), whereas it reaches MAD 792 million in rural areas (28%). © Morocco World News. All Rights Reserved. 9. NASA's Orion Spacecraft will begin the journey back to Earth, with a landing in the Pacific Ocean scheduled for December 11. NASA's Orion spacecraft was placed in lunar orbit Friday, officials said, as the much-delayed Moon mission proceeded successfully. A little over a week after the spacecraft blasted off from Florida bound for the Moon, flight controllers "successfully performed a burn to insert Orion into a distant retrograde orbit," the US space agency said on its website. The spacecraft is to take astronauts to the Moon in the coming years — the first to set foot on its surface since the last Apollo mission in 1972. NASA Artemis I Moon Rocket Launched After Multiple Delays This first test flight, without a crew on board, aims to ensure that the vehicle is safe. "The orbit is distant in that Orion will fly about 40,000 miles above the Moon," NASA said. While in lunar orbit, flight controllers will monitor key systems and perform checkouts while in the environment of deep space, the agency said. NASA Test Payload Launches Into Space Onboard US Satellite It will take Orion about a week to complete half an orbit around the Moon. It will then exit the orbit for the return journey home, according to NASA. On Saturday, the ship is expected to go up to 40,000 miles beyond the Moon, a record for a habitable capsule. The current record is held by the Apollo 13 spacecraft at 248,655 miles (400,171 km) from Earth. It will then begin the journey back to Earth, with a landing in the Pacific Ocean scheduled for December 11, after just over 25 days of flight. The success of this mission will determine the future of the Artemis 2 mission, which will take astronauts around the Moon without landing, then Artemis 3, which will finally mark the return of humans to the lunar surface. Those missions are scheduled to take place in 2024 and 2025, respectively. link: https://www.gadgets360.com/science/news/nasa-orion-spacecraft-lunar-orbit-artemis-i-launch-3554944
  10. Those who have been using the Android ecosystem all their life know how good SwiftKey is as a third-party keyboard. For the longest time, this was the go-to keyboard for anyone on Android, and for all the right reasons-- it lived up to its name, offered a ton of customizations, and worked like a charm with text predictions and learning patterns. SwiftKey Makes a Return to the App Store, With Microsoft Promising Heavy Investment in the App Back in 2014, SwiftKey finally started rolling out to iOS after the release of iOS 8. Apple users were finally getting a taste of a custom keyboard on iOS, and everything went smoothly until 2016, when Microsoft acquired SwiftKey and decided to continue the development on both Android and iOS. However, a few weeks ago, the company took the app down from the App Store and told everyone that they are killing the app. Now, Microsoft has decided to relist SwiftKey on the App Store and has also made promises of investments in terms of development going forward. Pedram Razaei, CTO at Microsoft, tweeted the following. SwiftKey is finally back on the iOS "with po[CENSORED]r demand" and has promised that the company is heavily investing in the keyboard. Meaning that there are going to be new features coming into the app. If you would like to test the app, you can head over to the App Store and download SwiftKey on your iPhone. Do note that the app has not been updated for some time, so you might not get access to the latest features but considering Microsoft's verbal commitment, we are more than likely to see something new coming to the app. Which keyboard app are you using on your iPhone? Let us know in the comments below. link: https://wccftech.com/fan-favorite-swiftkey-keyboard-returns-to-ios/
  11. AMD Ryzen 7000 CPUs are the first to feature the Zen 4 core architecture and the upcoming Ryzen 7000X3D chips will be the first to feature 3D V-Cache coupled with the same Zen 4 architecture. The CPU lineup is expected to be introduced in early 2023 and we are going to talk about what you can expect in terms of specifications, performance, and prices. AMD Ryzen 7000X3D 'Zen 4' CPUs: Bringing 3D V-Cache Goodness To The Zen 4 Architecture & AM5 Platform Earlier this year, AMD introduced the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, a CPU that was designed to offer the best value and performance to gamers by leveraging 3D V-Cache technology which allows AMD to stack large pools of cache on top of Zen chiplets, driving up performance in bandwidth starved games & applications. The benefit was clear right from the beginning with reviews showing a huge gaming performance boost that matched and even exceeded Intel's fastest CPU, the Core i9-12900K, at the time. With the Ryzen 7000X3D parts, AMD plans to repeat that and give gamers another boost that could potentially make AM5 the fastest platform to game on. AMD Ryzen 7000X3D 'Zen 4' 3D V-Cache Desktop CPUs Expected Features: Minor optimization on TSMC's 5nm process node Up to 64 MB of Stacked cache per CCD (96 MB L3 per CCD) Increase In Gaming Performance (Avg & Mins) Compatible With AM5 Platforms There are certain rumors and some official information from AMD that we know about the Ryzen 7000X3D CPUs already. AMD Ryzen 7000X3D 'Zen 4' 3D V-Cache CPU Specifications The first 3D V-Cache CPU from AMD came in just one flavor, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. With the Ryzen 7000X3D, AMD is rumored to offer more than just one SKU. Current rumors have pointed to an 8-core and 6-core variant but there's a room open for 16-core and 12-core variants too. We cannot say for sure how many variants will be coming to the market but in the case that we see a full-on 3D V-Cache lineup with four SKUs featuring 16, 12, 8, and 6 core SKUs, then the lineup would look something like the below: Ryzen 9 7950X3D 16-Core (2-CCD) Ryzen 9 7900X3D 12-Core (2-CCD) Ryzen 7 7800X3D 8-Core (1-CCD) Ryzen 5 7600X3D 6-Core (1-CCD) The other thing to talk about is the amount of 3D V-Cache we would get to see on each variant. The first 3D V-Cache chip featured 64 MB of stacked cache on a single CCD. If AMD is to keep the exact same cache count, we would get up to 96 MB of L3 cache on the single CCD & 192 MB of L3 cache on the dual CCD SKUs. AMD can go out and offer increased stacked cache amounts on their newer chips but that's something we cannot confirm at the moment. Another important thing to talk about is the overclocking support. The first generation of 3D V-Cache CPUs didn't get any tuning options and the voltage options were locked (only to be opened up by certain motherboard vendors using BETA/Non-Public BIOS). However, AMD's Robert Hallock (Ex-Head of Technical Marketing) confirmed that while overclocking was disabled for the first chip, AMD could have future generations of 3D V-Cache CPUs that may support overclocking just like any other CPU. Frequency is important, frequency is important but every processor, every game is always a series of tradeoffs, bottleneck mitigations and in our architecture, when you are in the range of four and a half to five GIgahertz, four or five is enough when you put a ton of memory on top you know you are not limited by frequency anymore, you are not giving anything up to target that frequency, its the performance limiters or the performance accelerators move up, move elsewhere in the architecture so we can dial back on the frequency a bit ease up on the thermals, make it easier to cool and drop in a big extra blob of cache on top which is more transistor density, more thermal density so that's a trade-off that was very easy. Robert Hallock (AMD Head of Technical Marketing) via PCWorld Another tradeoff besides overclocking was the slightly reduced clock speeds and that may still be a thing on the AMD Ryzen 7000X3D CPUs given that the performance benefit that comes from cache makes up for the losses that occur due to the reduced clocks. link: https://wccftech.com/roundup/amd-ryzen-7000x3d-zen-4-3dv-cache-desktop-cpus-specs-performance-price-availability-everything-we-know-so-far/

  14. UB-01 Symbiont’s triumphant return to Pokemon Go. Nihilego is coming back to Pokemon Go Gyms near you for a rotation in five-star raid battles. This Ultra Beast is the headliner of Pokemon Go’s new “Astral Eclipse” event. We don’t know much about this new event other than the headlining raid bosses. Nihilego raid schedule Nihilego will appear as the only five-star raid boss in Pokemon Go starting at 10 AM local time on November 23, 2022 and will remain available to battle until the same time on December 1. Raids do not generally follow a set schedule, and Nihilego raids will appear randomly at Gyms around the world during this time period, but you will receive a notification from the game when a raid is about to begin nearby. Like the recent Guzzlord raids, Nihilego raids will be signified by an Ultra Wormhole appearing on top of a Gym instead of a typical raid egg. Your best chance to find Nihilego raids is during the Raid Hours in which the Parasite Pokemon will be featured. Every Wednesday from 6 PM to 7 PM local time, the majority of Gyms host five-star raids for Trainers to work together to take down. Nihilego will be the featured raid boss in the raid hours on November 23 and 30, 2022. As with all raids, you’ll need your free daily Raid Pass or a Premium Battle Pass to join a raid in person, or a Remote Raid Pass to join a raid remotely. Can I catch a shiny Nihilego? Despite having debuted earlier this year, Nihilego’s shiny is still not yet released. Since this is its first full rotation in raids, we can hope that next time it comes around we’ll be able to get a shiny golden jellyfish. Nihilego weaknesses and counters Nihilego is a Poison and Rock-type Pokemon. This means it takes super effective damage from Psychic, Water, and Steel-type attacks. It also means that it will take double super effective damage from Ground-type attacks, so these should be your first choices. Some recommended Ground types include Landorus, Excadrill, Garchomp, and Groudon. If you don’t have strong Ground-type counters, these are some other recommended Pokemon to use against Nihilego raids: Steel: Mega Scizor, Metagross, Genesect, Dialga Water: Mega Blastoise, Kyogre, Swampert Psychic: Mega Alakazam, Mewtwo, Espeon, Alakazam, Hoopa Unbound A Mega Tip: A Mega Evolved Pokemon boosts the damage of all Pokemon in the raid by 10%, and the damage of all Pokemon using attacks that share a type with the Mega Evolved Pokemon by 30%. Coordinate those Megas with your raid group for added damage. Note that while Mega Steelix will boost the damage of fellow Ground types in the raid, its defensively oriented stats mean it likely won’t output enough damage of its own to be worth using. Mega Alakazam, Blastoise, or Scizor would be ideal Megas to use in Nihilego raids. Don’t be afraid of the shadows: Shadow Pokemon deal 20% more damage than their non-shadow counterparts, so the shadow versions of any of the suggested Pokemon that have them can help you win. Nihilego’s double weakness to Ground-type attacks means that it should be relatively easy to take down even with small groups who focus on using Fairy Pokemon. Types to avoid Nihilego’s Poison and Rock type attacks will hit hard against Fairy, Flying, Grass, Ice, and Fire-type Pokemon. Also keep in mind that Nihilego resists Normal, Flying, Bug, Fire, and Fairy-type attacks and is double resistant to Poison-type moves. Avoid these types of Pokemon. Usefulness Is Nihilego worth raiding for more than a Pokedex entry? When it first released during the Global Go Fest event, Nihilego wasn’t worth much consideration due to its lackluster fast move selection. The Season of Light breathed new life into Nihilego by giving it access to Poison Jab, a great Poison-type fast move. Nihilego is the top Poison-type raid attacker, and although that typing isn’t used that often in raids, it could be worth having a good Nihilego or two for your anti-Grass and Fairy roster. Nihilego also has a niche in Master League PvP. Although its double weakness to Ground and inability to threaten Steel-types hold it back against large portions of the meta, it is one of the hardest counters out there to Zacian, one of the most dominant Pokemon in the Master League. That use might not be worth it to many players to invest the resources in building a level 50 Nihilego, but others might enjoy going Zacian hunting with it. link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/pokemon-go-nihilego-raid-guide-best-counters-weaknesses-raid-hours-and-more-tips/1100-6509482/
  15. No guarantees, but nothing Sony is off limits these days. Gran Turismo series creator Kazunori Yamauchi has said that he would consider porting the PlayStation-exclusive racing series to PC. "Yes, I do think so," Yamauchi said when asked if the Gran Turismo series could make the jump to PC. The comment was made in an interview with GTPlanet(opens in new tab) during the Gran Turismo World Finals. Yamauchi went on to say that "Gran Turismo is a very finely tuned title," and seemed to imply that series developer Polyphony Digital would only want to do it if the port would run reliably in 4K resolution and 60 frames per second. "It's not a very easy subject, but of course, we are looking into it and considering it," he said. It would be a slight surprise, but not a huge one, if Gran Turismo came to PC. The last few years have been rife with major games previously exclusive to Sony's platforms being ported: God of War, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Spider-Man, and Uncharted 4, to name just a few marquee examples. The Gran Turismo series doesn't command quite the same cachet that it did a few decades ago, but it's still a major player in the world of racing games. And the market for racing games is certainly there on PC, if the success of last year's release of competitor Forza Horizon 5(opens in new tab) is any indication. It certainly would make our top recommendation for the best PC racing wheel(opens in new tab) a bit less awkward—as of publication it's the Gran Turismo branded Fanatec GT DD Pro. The latest release in the series is Gran Turismo 7, which released on PlayStation 4 and 5 in March of 2022. It featured a large single-player campaign alongside the traditional arcade mode, as well as dynamic time and weather effects while racing. It's hard to say exactly what sets Gran Turismo apart from the rest of the racing sim genre, but like other franchises it certainly has its adherents. For many it's the wild variety of cars on offer, including both production models and obscure short-runs of which only a handful exist. In many ways it's the way the series sells itself: Gran Turismo is entirely obsessed with the very idea of the automobile at every point in its history. link: https://www.pcgamer.com/gran-turismo-boss-says-hes-considering-and-looking-into-pc-port/
  16. Striking rail workers need to accept reforms to see their pay increase, the transport secretary has said. RMT union members are holding a series of strikes over the festive period while trying to negotiate more money to match rising inflation. But Mark Harper said workplace reforms were the only way to "free up" funding to do this. The RMT called on Mr Harper to "facilitate" negotiations on a new pay deal between the union and rail bosses. Speaking on the Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg show, Mr Harper said: "It is the reforms that free up the savings that then unlock the ability for the companies to make an offer to the trade unions on pay. "Both of those things have to happen in parallel. "I do not have a bottomless pit of taxpayers' money to throw at this problem." Any money saved through reforms would have to be split "fairly between the taxpayer and the people who work in the industry", Mr Harper added. The government used £16bn of taxpayers' money to keep services running as passenger numbers plummeted during the Covid-19 lockdowns, at one point reaching a 150-year low. Latest figures show rail travel in November 20% lower than over the the same period before the pandemic hit the UK. Mr Harper said there had been "quite a lot of progress" in negations between the trade unions and train operating companies and Network Rail. RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: "We have heard all of this before from other ministers. "We need Mr Harper to make his role as facilitator tangible and real." He called on him to give rail companies "mandates that enable them to make an offer that will create a settlement". RMT, which represents workers such as guards and signalling staff, has already held eight days of strikes since June which have caused widespread disruption. Along with other rail unions, its members want pay rises in line with the surging cost of living. Inflation - the rate at which prices rise - hit 11.1% last month. RMT says members working for train companies have been subject to "pay freezes, threats to jobs and attacks on their terms and conditions". Network Rail plans to shed 1,900 maintenance jobs as it tries to make £2bn of savings over the next two years. The body, which manages all of Great Britain's railway infrastructure, said it hoped to cut the jobs through voluntary means. The rail industry say reforms are also needed to modernise the railway and make pay rises affordable. Strikes will be staged across four 48-hour periods on 13-14 and 16-17 December, and 3-4 and 6-7 January. Some 40,000 workers will walk out and there is likely to be disruption in the days around the strikes due to trains not being in the right places. British Trades Union Congress general secretary Frances O'Grady told the BBC there was "a deal to be done" between the unions and rail bosses. A deal "takes goodwill, good faith and people around the table, but it also takes clarity," Ms O'Grady said. She added that there had been a recent "change in tone" from the government after Grant Shapps was removed as transport secretary in September. Mr Shapps, who is now business secretary, publicly clashed with rail unions earlier in the year when he refused to get involved in negotiations. Both of Mr Shapps successors, Anne-Marie Trevelyan and Mr Harper, have met with union leaders. link: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-63773083
  17. There are two contenders for the world's largest squid, and both are giants. Legends about gargantuan squid have existed for millennia, with photos confirming their existence nearly 150 years ago. But what is the largest squid in the world? Depending on how you measure, there are two contenders. The giant squid (Architeuthis dux) is the longest squid, and the colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni) is the heaviest. The giant squid, found in every ocean, is estimated to reach up to about 40 to 45 feet (12 to 14 meters) long from the tip of its body to the tip of its tentacles and weigh about 600 pounds (270 kilograms), Heather Judkins(opens in new tab), a cephalopod expert at the University of South Florida at St. Petersburg, told Live Science. There have been claimed sightings of giant squids up to about 66 feet long (20 m), but they have not been verified, according to Two Oceans Aquarium(opens in new tab) in Cape Town, South Africa. The colossal squid, which lives in Antarctic waters but may venture as far north as New Zealand, is estimated to reach about 30 to 33 feet (9 to 10 m) long. However, what it lacks in total length compared with the giant squid, it makes up for in weight — it can reach about 1,000 pounds (450 kg), Judkins said. This likely makes the colossal squid the most massive invertebrate on Earth, according to ocean nonprofit Oceana(opens in new tab). Giant squid and colossal squid have the largest eyes of any living animal, and possibly the largest eyes that have ever existed in the animal kingdom, according to the Museum of New Zealand(opens in new tab). They measure about 11 inches (27 centimeters) wide, about the size of a soccer ball, a 2012 study in the journal Current Biology(opens in new tab) noted. Each colossal squid eye is also equipped with a light-emitting organ known as a photophore, the Museum of New Zealand said. Colossal squid use these photophores like headlights to see in the dark. (Giant squid eyes lack photophores, Judkins said.) The colossal squid also has the largest beak of any squid, made of a material similar to what human fingernails are made of. The squid uses its beak to slice a meal into bite-size pieces before it enters the mouth, and a tooth-covered, tongue-like organ called the radula shreds food further once it's inside the beak. Both huge squid species eat fish and other squid. After they reach adulthood, the only regular predator they face is likely the sperm whale, according to Two Oceans Aquarium. Colossal squid might form as much as 77% of a sperm whale's diet, according to the Museum of New Zealand. Because the ocean is so vast and the squid live so deep, these sea monsters are rarely seen, the Smithsonian noted(opens in new tab). Although both the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle and the ancient Roman scholar Pliny the Elder recounted details about huge squid, according to Two Oceans Aquarium, the first photo of such an enormous squid wasn't taken until 1874, when Rev. Moses Harvey of Newfoundland captured a picture of a dead giant squid from a fisherman who caught it by accident, the Smithsonian said. Most of what scientists know about giant squid comes from remains discovered floating on the ocean surface, washed up on beaches or within sperm whale stomachs, a 2013 study in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B(opens in new tab) noted. The same holds true for colossal squid, according to the Museum of New Zealand. Scientists did not manage to capture a photo of the adult giant squid in its natural habitat till 2004, and the first video footage of an adult giant squid in the wild was not taken until 2012, Britannica explained(opens in new tab). Similarly, no one had ever seen an intact colossal squid until 2003, according to the Museum of New Zealand. An international expedition to Antarctica this December(opens in new tab) will attempt to find and film the colossal squid in the deep sea for the first time. "The ability to see these animals in their natural habitat is amazing," Judkins said. "To get the opportunity to capture them with remotely operated floating camera systems is great. It's an excellent way to observe behaviors." link: https://www.livescience.com/what-is-largest-squid
  18. The massive Connecticut property is on the market for the first time since its completion in 2009, and includes the main house, pool, and pool house on its sprawling 19 acres. Located in Greenwich, Connecticut, is a 19-acre mansion for sale that has 10 bedrooms, 14.5 bathrooms, and seven wood-burning fireplaces, complete with a main house, pool, and pool house. What we noticed, however, was that this massive property has parking for up to 36 cars, including a 30-car garage in the lower level of the main house. The home was built in 2009, coming to the market for the first time now, the property is listed at $33.8 million by real estate group Brown Harris Stevens. If you happen to be a recent Powerball winner whose bank statement looks more like that of a oil tycoon than a used car salesman . . . first of all, email us, we've got some exciting ideas for all that cash. Second, check out this $33,800,000 estate in Greenwich, Connecticut. The sprawling property features 17,878 square feet of living space sitting on 19.1 acres of property. Our attention has been piqued, but the real crown jewel of the property is the basement garage, which has space for up to 30 cars. Built in 2009, the home features 10 bedrooms, 14.5 bathrooms, and seven wood-burning fireplaces. A three-car garage attaches to the mudroom, along with a three-car porte cochère. Quick math brings the total parking spaces on the property to 36—ample room for the kind of collection this house's owner can probably afford. From the look of the photos, the current owners have an affinity for Porsche, with at least six 911s visible in the garage. If this feels like an absurd amount of money to spend on any property, no matter the acreage or garage space, consider that it is a relative bargain compared to this $62 million Los Angeles mansion. For just over half the price, you get double the car storage! And the estimated monthly payments come out to a very reasonable $149,677, assuming a 20 percent down payment. link: https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a42037203/greenwich-mansion-36-cars-parking-garage/
  19. It may be a classic Cumbrian pub, but the Black Bull knows how to please a far more diverse crowd Jay Rayner Jay Rayner Sun 27 Nov 2022 06.00 GMT 690 The Black Bull Inn, 44 Main Street, Sedbergh LA10 5BL (015396 20264, theblackbullsedbergh.co.uk). Snacks £4.50-£6.50, sandwiches £6.95-£14.95, starters £9.95-£10.9, mains £18.50-£27.95, desserts £7.50-£8.50, wines from £28 It would be easy to misread the Black Bull at Sedbergh, located in that part of the Yorkshire Dales which offers a lofty wave to the Lake District. On a weekday lunchtime, the dining rooms fill quickly with parents in expensive waxed outerwear, grabbing lunch with their kids from the eponymous boarding school that dominates the town. A parade of burgers and sandwiches, precision stabbed with cocktail sticks, alongside soups with doorstep slabs of bread, troop out of the kitchen. And a pint please for the pink-cheeked, broad-chested chap with the Range Rover outside. This may be both the Black Bull’s literal and figurative bread and butter; the way that any multi-purpose country pub earns its crust and crumb. But take a look at the bar menu that those family groups are ordering from and another story begins to unfurl. Yes, it includes beef and horseradish sandwiches, and another filled with hot roast pork from nearby Mansergh Hall Farm, famous in the Lune Valley for its outdoor-reared pigs. So far, so shabby chic. But there are other less traditional things: a chickpea and lentil curry for example, or a pork and kimchi stew, or perhaps crispy Korean beef with shiso and sesame, offered as a snack. The same juggling act is there in the layout of the place. To the left of the front door is the bar area. It comes complete with beers from Fell Brewery, Lakes Brew Company and Timothy Taylor’s on tap. It might just satisfy furious members of the Pub Liberation Front who believe that the serving of nice things to eat in such places is a bloody disgrace. What’s wrong with a packet of scampi fries, eh? (Nothing, as it happens.) Immediately to the right is the casual dining area, with its curving booths in red leather. Beyond that is the restaurant proper, a more austere space with raw wood panelling hung in turn with large charcoal landscapes. It’s a veritable riot of greys and blacks. Advertisement It all begins to make sense when you know more about the heritage of head chef Nina Matsunaga who runs the pub with her partner, local-born James Ratcliffe. Matsunaga was raised by Japanese parents in Dusseldorf, and brings those influences to bear on the ingredients from the surrounding hills and meadows, but in a thrillingly loose-limbed, lets-be-having-you sort of way. If it tastes good, it’s on. Recently Matsunaga was named a finalist in the chef of the year category of the Be Inclusive Hospitality awards, which celebrate diversity in the restaurant industry. Having eaten her food, I can say she very much deserves to be celebrated. link: https://www.theguardian.com/food/2022/nov/27/the-black-bull-inn-sedburgh-restaurant-review
  20. Russia's attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure amount to genocide, a top Ukrainian official says. Strikes on key facilities targeted "the full Ukrainian nation" and were an effort to force Kyiv to surrender, the prosecutor-general told the BBC. The term genocide refers to an effort to wipe out a group of people. Russia denies having any such aim. Millions of people across Ukraine are facing power cuts in freezing weather, following sustained Russian attacks. Efforts are ongoing to reconnect homes cut off from electricity. Officials say Kherson has now been fully resupplied, following the city's recapture by Ukrainian troops earlier this month. Is Russia committing genocide in Ukraine? How much damage has Russia done to Ukrainian power supplies? Why millions of Ukrainians have no power as winter nears But people in 14 regions and the capital Kyiv remain under usage restrictions, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. Genocide involves "the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group", according to a definition provided by the UN Genocide Convention. Among the acts which may qualify are killing or causing serious harm to members of that group - or forcibly transferring its children elsewhere. In his BBC interview, Ukrainian Prosecutor-General Andriy Kostin said that, as well as the attacks on the energy grid, 11,000 Ukrainian children had been forcibly deported to Russia. Mr Kostin said his office was investigating reports of more than 49,000 war crimes and crimes of aggression since Russia launched its full-scale invasion on 24 February. The "same pattern of conduct" was being seen in every Ukrainian settlement occupied by Russian forces, he observed. A war crime constitutes a violation of the so-called "rules" of war set out by international treaties including the Geneva Conventions. Among other things, the Conventions sti[CENSORED]te that civilians must be protected. Russia has been repeatedly accused of breaking this rule. Shelling of residential buildings in Dnipro over the weekend left one person dead and 13 others injured, according to the governor of the wider region. Meanwhile, police said 32 civilians had been killed by strikes in Kherson since Russian troops left the southern city earlier this month. On Saturday, Ukraine marked the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor - a man-made famine that killed millions of people during Soviet rule. Of the war crimes seen since Russia invaded in February, Mr Kostin said 260 people had been indicted and 13 verdicts had been issued by Ukrainian courts. He called for the creation of an "international ad-hoc tribunal", supported by countries of "the whole civilised world" who opposed the invasion to hold Russia to account. In other developments, the head of Ukraine's state nuclear company Energoatom says there are signals Moscow's soldiers could be preparing to leave the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. Both sides have accused each other of shelling the site - which was captured by the Russians in March - causing worries of a dangerous nuclear accident. But Petro Kotin cautioned that there was no evidence of any Russian departure yet. link" https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-63773654 \
