  3. Ian Blackford is to stand down as leader of the SNP group at Westminster, it has been confirmed. Mr Blackford said he believed it was time for "fresh leadership" after five years in the role. He said he would formally stand down at the group's annual general meeting next week. There has been speculation in recent weeks that some SNP MPs were plotting to replace Mr Blackford as group leader. Mr Blackford said he would continue in his role as the MP for Ross, Skye and Lochaber and had also accepted a new role at the centre of the SNP's independence campaign. And he insisted he had not been pressured into resigning, telling BBC Scotland: "No, not at all. I've taken the decision". He added: "The first minister has asked me to take on a role as her business ambassador. I'm absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to take on the engagement with the business community. "In order to do that, it's right that I stand down as the SNP Westminster leader. "I've done it for five and a half years so it's time for others to come forward and take the Westminster group through on the next part of its journey and helping the party towards independence." MP denies bid for SNP Westminster leadership role SNP's Blackford dismisses resignation rumours Mr Blackford has become as well-known figure in the House of Commons through his weekly appearance at Prime Minister's Questions and is seen as being a close ally of First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, the SNP leader. He faced calls to resign from political opponents after the Daily Mail reported in June that it had obtained a recording of Mr Blackford urging fellow MPs to give "absolute full support" to SNP MP Patrick Grady, who was suspended for sexual misconduct. Mr Grady, a former SNP chief whip, was suspended from Parliament for two days over a sexual advance towards a colleague in 2016, and also suspended from the SNP's Westminster group for a week. Ms Sturgeon subsequently said that the support expressed for Mr Grady had been "unacceptable". There have been reports that some SNP MPs were also unhappy at Mr Blackford's handling of the case, with Aberdeen South MP Stephen Flynn recently dismissing suggestions that he was "on manoeuvres" with a view to replacing him as group leader. After announcing he was stepping down, Mr Blackford told BBC Scotland: "I'll always speak up to make sure that we speak out against any kind of intimidation, any kind of bad behaviour, sexual exploitation. And in my new role I'll continue to do that when it's right to do so." At the time, Mr Blackford made clear that he intended to stand for re-election to the post at the upcoming AGM. He also denied rumours in March that he was considering resigning amid further reports of party infighting. SNP sources have told BBC Scotland that they expect Mr Flynn to stand for the leadership, and that he has ''broad support'' among their MPs and may be the only candidate to succeed Mr Blackford. The Westminster group's AGM will be held next Tuesday, with the leader being selected by the 44 MPs who currently hold the SNP whip. It means the new leader will be in place to face Rishi Sunak at Prime Minister's Questions the next day, Mr Blackford defeated former Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy to become the MP for Ross, Skye and Lochaber in 2015, with his campaign being mired in controversy over online abuse aimed at Mr Kennedy and his long-running battle with alcoholism. Brian Smith, who was convenor of the SNP's Skye and Lochalsh branch, later resigned after it was reported that he had called Mr Kennedy a "drunken slob" and "quisling-in-chief" in a series of more than 130 tweets. Mr Kennedy died of a major haemorrhage linked to his alcoholism just three weeks after the election. link: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-63821836
  4. Fangy Whatcheeria measured up to 6.5 feet (2 meters) long, and more than 300 million years ago, it was the apex predator in the sinkholes-turned-lakes of the American Midwest. A fangy, 6-foot-long (1.8 meters) carnivore that haunted the lakes of what is now the American Midwest would have been a top predator in its freshwater ecosystem — a "T. rex of its time," according to scientists who studied the creature. And it grew up fast, new research finds. The predator, an early four-legged vertebrate known as a tetrapod, lived around 328 million years ago during the early Carboniferous period. Its name is Whatcheeria deltae, after the town of What Cheer, Iowa, where many of its fossils are found. It lived at a time when the region was lushly vegetated and dotted with sinkholes that had turned into lakes. W. deltae would have lurked in these lakes, growing to 6.5 feet (2 meters) long and looking something like toothy, enormous salamanders. "It would have made Whatcheeria the biggest thing in the lake: Go wherever you want, eat whoever you want," said Ben Otoo(opens in new tab), a doctoral candidate at Chicago's Field Museum and the University of Chicago and one of the authors of a new study describing W. deltae published Monday (Nov. 28) in the journal Communications Biology(opens in new tab). Otoo and was studying the Field Museum's collection of 375 W. deltae specimens — some bone fragments and some nearly complete skeletons — when they noticed that the limb bones of the animal came in different sizes. The size differences weren't based on when or where the fossils were found, so Otoo realized that they were looking at bones from animals of different ages. Smaller limb bones measured about 4 inches (10 centimeters) long, while the largest were 2.6 feet (0.8 m). That meant that Otoo and their colleagues had an opportunity to study how W. deltae grew. Early tetrapods like whatcheeriads were related to modern reptiles, amphibians and mammals but was in a different evolutionary lineage than the ancestor of those three groups. Modern-day birds and mammals tend to grow quickly in their youth and then stop growing, while reptiles tend to grow quickly at first and then continue growing, but more slowly. Meanwhile, some amphibians grow at a slow and consistent rate throughout their lives. Little was known about how early tetrapods may have grown. By looking at growth rings in the bones, the team found that W. deltae got big fast and then slowed to a more leisurely but steady growth rate. All of the nine specimens they studied were older juveniles and young adults, Otoo said, so it seems that the animals bulked up to around 3.3 feet (1 meter) in length as they neared sexual maturity and then grew larger more slowly in later adulthood. "You have this animal that is racing to get to reproductive age to get to at least a decent size really quickly, because the best way to get yourself out of a predator's range of prey items is to get bigger," Otoo told Live Science. It was surprising to see this pattern in such an early tetrapod, Otoo added, because scientists expected rapid early growth to be linked to a terrestrial lifestyle and restricted to mammals, birds and reptiles with higher metabolisms than those of early tetrapods. "To find [rapid growth] in as old an animal as Whatcheeria and as primitive as Whatcheeria was really unexpected," Otoo said. Other types of tetrapods from this era grew more slowly and steadily, Otoo said, so it's clear that these early four-legged animals were trying a number of different evolutionary pathways to success. "Early tetrapods, even those far away from the origin of the modern living lineages — they basically had a lot more going on than we thought," Otoo said. link: https://www.livescience.com/tetrapod-predator-growth
  5. It seems likely the new three-row crossover will fit between the current Highlander and larger Sequoia SUVs, and it'll make its full debut February 8. Toyota confirmed the existence of the new Grand Highlander SUV, which it plans to fully reveal at the Chicago Auto Show on February 8. The three-row SUV will likely fill the gap between the mid-size three-row Highlander and the larger, body-on-frame full-size Sequoia. Notably, the Grand Highlander is wearing the same Hybrid Max badge as the top-spec Crown sedan, which suggests a 340-horsepower setup. It looks like Toyota wants to join in on the excitement surrounding enlarged versions of SUVs like the Grand Cherokee L and Grand Wagoneer L by making its own super-sized version of the Highlander called . . . you guessed it, the Grand Highlander. While the current Highlander boasts impressive fuel economy in hybrid form, it can't compete with the third-row space of competitors including the Kia Telluride, Volkswagen Atlas, and Chevy Traverse. Toyota describes the Grand Highlander as "the ultimate road-trip vehicle," implying increased legroom and cargo space. The first teaser shot of the new three-row SUV gives us a glimpse at what the rear will look like. We're particularly excited about the Hybrid Max badge, which indicates the Grand Highlander Platinum will receive the same potent powertrain as the top-spec Crown sedan. In that car, the hybrid setup with a turbocharged 2.4-liter inline-four gas engine produces a combined 340 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. Toyota didn't give any information about the Grand Highlander's available powertrains, but it's likely the standard 265-horsepower turbo-four from the base Highlander will carry over to this new model as well. We managed to pull back some of the shadows layered over the photo to expose a bit more of the car. The increased visibility shows similar squared-off styling to the current Highlander, but also includes a pair of round exhaust tips not found on the standard version. The taillights take on a "C" shape, and a new light bar spans the spoiler. We don't have any other info on pricing or when we'll actually start seeing the Grand Highlander on the road, but we do know that Toyota is planning to do a full reveal of the SUV at the Chicago Auto Show on February 8. link: https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a42121068/toyota-grand-highlander-release-date/

  7. Russia's frequent and widespread attacks on Ukraine's power infrastructure have plunged millions of people into darkness, depriving them of heat, power and water just as winter arrives and temperatures drop below zero. Many Ukrainian and Western leaders quickly condemned the strikes as war crimes because of the harm done to the civilian po[CENSORED]tion. But attacks on energy grids have long been part of warfare - so is Russia's strategy a violation of international law? With certain limitations, parts of a country's electrical grid can be considered legitimate targets if they are used to power military facilities. This is true even if the targets have a civilian as well as a military purpose, so long as destroying the object would "offer a definite military advantage". Iraq's energy infrastructure was attacked by US forces in 1991 - a strategy that has been heavily criticised. Nato forces also targeted the power grid in Serbia in 1999. In both cases, the civilian po[CENSORED]tion was affected by the resulting power outages. In fact, there may be times when neutralising a military facility by taking out its power supply is preferable to hitting the facility directly with missiles or artillery. "Would I rather deprive part of the civilian po[CENSORED]tion of electricity for a limited period, rather than risk killing civilians because of the collateral effects of using kinetic weapons? Yeah, I would think so," Michael Schmitt - professor emeritus at the US Naval War College - told the BBC. Why millions of Ukrainians have no power as winter nears What war crimes is Russia accused of in Ukraine? Russia denies intentionally targeting civilians, and has sought to justify its attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure as strikes against the "military command system of Ukraine and related energy facilities", according to a defence ministry statement on 18 November. However, even when an object is a legitimate military target, there are still limits on when and how it can be attacked. "The state has an obligation under international humanitarian law (IHL) to choose a target or a tactic that will cause less damage to civilians. Less death and less injury, but still fulfilling the military advantage," Dr Maria Varaki from King's College War Studies department told the BBC. Civilian deaths and injury caused by attacks on military targets are not necessarily violations of international law. But the principle of proportionality must be applied, which says that the harm to civilians should not be excessive in relation to the military advantage gained. Parties must also take "constant care" to spare the civilian po[CENSORED]tion and civilian property. In Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky said after strikes on cities in November that 10 million people had been left without electricity and that half of the country's power capacity had been knocked out. Six million were still without power by Thursday night, he added. At a certain point, says Prof Schmitt, "the civilian harm is so severe that you just can't pull the trigger". The sort of advantage gained by an attack is also a factor when considering whether it is a violation of IHL. "Demoralising people, terrorising people, is not considered to be an acceptable military advantage," Dr Varaki explains. In fact, she says, the opposite is true: "Terrorising the civilian po[CENSORED]tion is considered to be a war crime." As well as Russia's insistence that it is targeting only military objects, the Kremlin has hinted that there is another reason for the strikes - persuading Kyiv to talk. "The unwillingness of the Ukrainian side to settle the problem, to start negotiations, its refusal to seek common ground - this is their consequence," said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. An attacking force may hope that destroying the civilian power grid will lower the morale of the enemy, but that is not enough to justify the attack under international law. There must also be a concrete military advantage before the attack is deemed legal. The sheer scope and scale of Russia's attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure make it unlikely that they can all be justified in that way, says Prof Schmitt. "We're at a point now where they're hitting so many targets that I can't imagine they're picking power infrastructure that qualifies as a military objective in every case." As a former US Air Force targeting officer, Prof Schmitt also doubts that Russia is fully validating every object it attacks - another requirement of IHL. "You just can't conduct operations of that intensity and that frequency across an entire nation and have done your required verification of targets," he explains. With that in mind, Prof Schmitt believes it is now "pretty clear" that Russia's main motivation, at least in some attacks, is to "terrorise the civilian po[CENSORED]tion". Whatever Russia's exact reason for targeting the power grid, Dr Varaki says it has not previously shown a commitment to minimising civilian harm. "You can identify a general pattern that the Russian army has not been fully concerned by civilian deaths," she argues. By 28 November, Russia had hit more than 200 separate targets relating to Ukraine's energy infrastructure, according to the defence minister. Millions were without power, and electricity usage was restricted in over a dozen regions. But despite that, Prof Schmitt says that if Russia hopes to demoralise the po[CENSORED]tion, the tactic is unlikely to work. "Historically there is no reason to believe the Ukrainian morale will break... [Putin] is hardening the resolve against Russia to stay the fight. This is a strategic miscalculation." So has Russia violated international law? Any future legal process would have to first consider if the huge number of targets could all be considered legitimate military objects. Even if they are, the harm done to the civilian po[CENSORED]tion in attacking them should not be excessive in relation to the concrete advantage gained. And that advantage must be military in nature - terrorising the po[CENSORED]tion is not a legitimate reason to launch an attack. Russia and Ukraine are both parties to Additional Protocol I of the Geneva Conventions, where many of these rules are defined. It remains to be seen whether Russia will ever have to explain how its actions comply with those rules. link: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-63754808

  13. The AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT may not be the fastest graphics card around but at a price of $99 US, it is definitely the cheapest current-gen GPU that one could purchase right now. AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT Goes On Sale For $100 US & Comes With a Copy of Dead Island 2 Worth $60 US The specific variant of the AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT graphics card that is available on sale is the TUF Gaming custom model from ASUS. Newegg is offering this graphics card for just $99.99 US, a drop of $80 US from its $179.99 US MSRP. The best part of this deal is that it even comes with a free $60 US game in the form of a copy of Dead Island 2. So overall, you are getting $240 US worth of value by paying just $100 US at Newegg. As for the graphics card itself, the ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 6500 XT graphics card features a custom design that makes use of a dual-slot and dual-fan cooler. The graphics card requires just a single 6-pin connector to boot & has an overly-engineered cooler on top of its small Navi 24 GPU. While the AMD Navi 24 GPU wasn't a hit in reviews, the graphics card did offer a nice improvement in efficiency. The main factor that held it back was the pricing which at $199 US was ridiculous given the performance it offered was lower than the RX 480/580 which was available for much less than that and with twice the memory capacity. AMD did launch the Radeon RX 6400 for DIY users but it was also plagued with a similar price issue however, the sub-$200 US segment has since seen many badly priced cards such as the Arc A380 & the GTX 1630. TechPowerUp has visualized the performance per dollar of these four graphics cards here. But with a low price of $100 US, this card seems very reasonable and the added game is just icing on the top. This is definitely something we can recommend to budget PC builders and I hope that the pricing does come close to $100 US for these cards. We also saw some really good deals over the last week as a part of the Black Friday and Cyber Monday weekend however they've now ended. link: https://wccftech.com/amd-radeon-rx-6500-xt-graphics-card-on-sale-for-99-us-free-copy-of-dead-island-2/

  15. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is swinging onto PS5 in 2023 Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is surely top of the list of many players' most anticipated games coming in 2023. It's going to be a PS5 exclusive, and continues the story of Peter Parker and Miles Morales as they face off against new enemies. While there's still a lot to learn about the highly-anticipated sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, we do know a few details thanks to the game's initial reveal. It'll launch in 2023, though we don't have exact timings yet. A trailer was released alongside the reveal. It showed Venom walking out of the shadows towards Peter and Miles. Kraven the Hunter is also rumored to be one of the villains. There are plenty of questions that Sony and Insomniac have yet to answer about Marvel's Spider-Man 2, but it's still early days. As we draw closer to a possible release date, we're likely to hear more on what we should expect from Spidey's second outing. For now, here's everything we know so far. Marvel's Spider-Man 2: cut to the chase What is it? The sequel to the critically acclaimed Marvel's Spider-Man When can I play it? TBC 2023 What can I play it on? PS5 Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is due to release in 2023 exclusively for PS5, completely skipping PS4. Right now, we don't have a more specific release date outside of that 2023 release window, though we expect developer Insomniac Games will narrow the date down sometime this year. The good news is, Spider-Man 2 is still on track for its 2023 release window, according to Insomniac. In response(opens in new tab) to a fan concerned about a delay on Twitter, the official Insomniac Games account said: "We're making good progress and it's still slated for 2023." While not confirmed, it's possible we could see Marvel's Spider-Man 2 coming to PC at a later date. We've seen Sony bringing more and more of its first-party titles to PC recently, with Marvel's Spider-Man already on the platform and Miles Morales arriving in November. We wouldn't expect Marvel's Spider-Man 2 to be available on Steam at launch, but a PC release later down the line looks likely. MARVEL’S SPIDER-MAN 2: TRAILER Reveal trailer Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was revealed with a trailer at the September 2021 PlayStation Showcase. The trailer is only around one-and-half minutes long, but it offers us a fair amount of details. For one, we see both Peter Parker and Miles Morales taking fighting goons, suggesting we may get to play as both Spider-Men this time around. At the very end, we got a surprise appearance of the infamous Spider-Man villain Venom – an outer-world symbiote with a passion for violence - so we expect he'll be one of the sequel's main villains. Unfortunately, there was no gameplay to analyze, but we briefly see a shot of Peter getting a power surge with his Iron Spider arms, suggesting suit powers may be making a return. We also hear an ominous voice talking over the trailer, suggesting Peter and Miles will have yet another villain to face off against. Based on their speech about looking for a challenge and formidable opponent we’d put our money on it being Kraven the Hunter – a classic Spider-Man villain with a similar attitude towards the prey he seeks out in the comics. Check out the trailer below: Gameplay reveal incoming? Insider and media analyst Millie Amand has claimed that we'll be getting a look at Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 gameplay soon. Claiming that it's currently "exceeding expectations for Marvel higher-ups," Amand tweeted that "'Fluidity' and 'visual punch' is striking according to an employee of Marvel." She ended this by saying we'll be getting gameplay footage soon. Unfortunately, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 didn't appear in the September 2022 State of Play or the one that aired in October 2022. Hopefully, it won't be too long before our first real look at Insomniac's upcoming sequel. link: https://www.techradar.com/news/marvels-spider-man-2
  16. The award-winning mobile game's latest update is bringing fan-favorite Revenant into the fray alongside a chilling new battle pass. Apex Legends Mobile's mid-season update, Underworld, goes live this evening, kicking off the holidays with a nightmarish new legend and battle pass. But the celebration is starting early for Respawn Entertainment with the announcement that Apex Legends Mobile has won Apple's iPhone Game Of The Year award. With over 15 million pre-registered players, the win comes as no surprise. The game generated $5 million and was the most-downloaded game in 60 countries during the first week following its launch. Yesterday's release of the Underworld launch trailer has only increased the game's po[CENSORED]rity, as players wait to see how Revenant's addition to the legend lineup changes the mobile game's meta. The Underworld event is a mid-season update that brings with it all the bells and whistles of a new season, including a new battle pass, seasonal store, playable legend, and in-game events. Later in the season, Underworld will introduce Airdrop Escalation to the game, a mode in which neutral Care Packages stocked with fully-kitted weapons drop far more frequently, leading to what will undoubtedly be even more chaotic gunplay. Also coming to the game is Second Shot, a mode that gives players a chance to quickly respawn without the aid of their team mates. According to the devs, more events are on the way, and will appear on the in-game event calendar as the season progresses. New store events with festive-yet-fear-inducing cosmetic rewards are also a guarantee, with a new Store Vault update already announced, and more events to come. Revenant's addition is a guaranteed game-changer, as Apex Mobile gives each legend a unique skill tree with unlockable perks that allow players to tweak each characters' abilities to their liking. Developers announced earlier this season that no mobile-exclusive legends like Fade and Rhapsody would join the roster of playable legends in Season 3, and Revenant's addition seems to confirm this. But the lack of new mobile-first legends doesn't seem to be affecting the game's po[CENSORED]rity, given its domination at this year's App Store Awards. (You can learn more about this year's App Store Award winners here.) Next, Apex Legends Mobile will face off with the likes of Rocket League Sideswipe and Diablo Immortal at the Google Play Awards. Voting has already ended, with the winner scheduled to be announced tomorrow. While you wait for the winners to be announced, make sure to finish up your Champions battle pass and redeem your Champions Store rewards before Apex Mobile's Season 3.5: Underworld update goes live tonight at 5 PM PT / 8 PM ET. Apex Legends Mobile is available for download on Android and iOS devices. link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/apex-legends-mobile-wins-iphone-game-of-the-year-ahead-of-underworld-update/1100-6509552/
  17. .Now called Call of Duty: Warzone Caldera, old Warzone ain't what it used to be When Activision launched Call of Duty: Warzone 2(opens in new tab) a few weeks back, Warzone 1.0 went temporarily offline while developer Raven Software focused on support for the new game. Raven has its hands busy with flying boats, infinite money glitches, and frequent crashes(opens in new tab) plaguing Warzone 2, but it has kept its promise: as of today Warzone 1.0 is back online, but it has a new name. Warzone 1 is now called Call of Duty: Warzone Caldera(opens in new tab). It's pretty much the same Warzone it was a few weeks ago, but with major features missing. There's only one map now (Caldera) and two playlist options, battle royale Quads and Solos. All of Warzone's existing weapons, custom classes, and unlocks remain intact, but there is no new battle pass or any way to unlock old battle pass content. Warzone Caldera is now essentially a Call of Duty game from before the service game era—an island of content with no roadmap or major updates in the works. A battle royale locked in time. Notably, today's relaunch has (at least for the time being) killed the small map category for both Warzone 1 and its sequel. Fortune's Keep(opens in new tab), a well-liked small map that replaced Rebirth Island earlier this year, is gone, and Activision isn't planning to add it, Rebirth, or Warzone's first map Verdansk, back anytime soon. This is sad news for the significant chunk of the Warzone community for whom the smaller, fast-paced format of Fortune's Keep/Rebirth Island had become their preferred way to play. The po[CENSORED]rity of small maps and the Resurgence ruleset (a battle royale variant that automatically respawns squadmates if at least one player is alive) has proven po[CENSORED]r enough to stay in Warzone's playlist rotation for the last two years, so it's strange to abandon it now. Warzone 2 doesn't have a small map option either, but Activision has teased "exciting developments" for fans of small maps in Warzone 2's future seasons. link: https://www.pcgamer.com/warzone-1-is-now-back-online-but-its-missing-key-features-and-maps/
  18. The Chinese ambassador to the UK, Zheng Zeguang, has been summoned to the Foreign Office for a meeting following the arrest of a BBC journalist in Shanghai. Ed Lawrence was beaten and briefly detained while covering anti-government lockdown protests on Sunday. A Foreign Office source said this was "completely unacceptable". The Chinese government said Mr Lawrence had not voluntarily presented his press credentials. Footage shared widely on social media showed several police officers grabbing Mr Lawrence and pinning him to the ground. The BBC said he was beaten and kicked by police officers, and then taken away in handcuffs. The BBC has described the treatment of one of its journalists as "extremely concerning". It said Chinese officials had claimed Mr Lawrence was arrested "for his own good in case he caught Covid from the crowd", but said this explanation was not "credible". Chinese protesters say police seeking them out How China's Covid protests are being silenced Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, who is currently in Romania, said the arrest was "deeply disturbing". "Journalists must be able to do their job without intimidation," Mr Cleverly said. Responding to an urgent question in the Commons, Foreign Office Minister David Rutley said the Chinese ambassador was being summoned to make clear the "unacceptable and unwarranted" nature of the arrest and to demand "a full and thorough explanation". On Monday, China's foreign ministry spokesman said: "Based on what we learned from relevant Shanghai authorities, [Mr Lawrence] did not identify himself as a journalist and didn't voluntarily present his press credentials." A Foreign Office source said: "Protests in China that involve criticism of the government and leadership are rare. That Chinese citizens who know the risks and consequences of such actions are doing it anyway should be a signal to the Chinese government to listen to their own people." Labour's shadow foreign affairs minister Catherine West welcomed the ambassador being summoned. "The robust response is a welcome change to the government's previous handling of Chinese overreach in Manchester," she told the Commons. Police are currently investigating clashes outside the Chinese Consulate in Manchester last month, after allegations of assault against pro-democracy protesters. Conservative MP Tim Loughton called for "clear consequences" for China's actions, asking: "When are we going to get serious about China?" Protests against the Chinese government and its Covid lockdown policies have erupted across a number of Chinese cities after a deadly fire in the western region of Xinjiang killed 10 people last week. Many believe residents could not escape the blaze in a locked-down apartment tower in the city of Urumqi because of Covid restrictions, although local authorities have disputed this. Public anger over the tragedy - just the latest in a series of disasters blamed on Covid restrictions - escalated into street protests. The diplomatic row comes after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the so-called "golden era" of relations with China was over. In a speech at the Lord Mayor's Banquet in London on Monday, Mr Sunak said the closer economic tries of the previous decade had been "naive" but that China's significance in world affairs could not be ignored. Mr Sunak has faced pressure from Tory backbenchers to toughen the UK's stance on China since he took over as prime minister last month. link: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-63795270
