The Crystal Tomb Amazon Games has announced that it will work alongside Crystal Dynamics on the next Tomb Raider title. Originally announced in April 2022, this new Tomb Raider game is in the works at Crystal Dynamics, the studio behind 2013’s Tomb Raider and its sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider. However, the publishing reigns have now passed from Square Enix to Amazon Games following The Embracer Group’s acquisition of the Tomb Raider franchise earlier this year. “We’re honored by the opportunity to work with this storied developer and franchise,” Christoph Hartmann, the VP of Amazon Games, said in a joint press release(opens in new tab). “Our team is incredibly excited about collaborating with the talented and visionary Crystal Dynamics team to bring the next chapter of Lara Croft’s saga to players around the world.” Crystal Dynamics will draw on the power and cutting-edge technology of Unreal Engine 5 to enhance the title's storytelling elements to ensure that the release will be the “biggest, most expansive Tomb Raider game to date”, according to the press release. This will also be Amazon Games’ first experience with a single-player narrative-driven adventure. Neither party has provided a release date or title for this new Tomb Raider game, only saying that information and further details will be shared “at a later date”. The future of the Tomb According to the press release, Amazon Games will provide its “full support” to Crystal Dynamics during the development process and act as publisher upon the game's release. In addition, Crystal Dynamics has confirmed that the game will still “reward exploration and creative pathfinding” while featuring classic “mind-bending puzzles” and various enemies of Croft, which the franchise has rapidly become revered for. “Transformative is what we’re looking for, and with Amazon Games, we found a team that shares our creative vision, ambitions, and values for a Lara Croft universe across the spectrum of possibilities,” Scott Amos, head of at Crystal Dynamics, stated. While Crystal Dynamics’ reboot of the Tomb Raider series has seen success, both the developer and Amazon Games are looking to stray from another reboot and provide an entirely new Chapter to Lara Croft’s saga. Hopefully, it's not long until we get a glimpse of what this new chapter looks like. link: https://www.techradar.com/news/amazon-games-to-publish-the-most-expansive-tomb-raider-game-yet

You'll be able to battle against your friends soon. Marvel Snap, the mobile Marvel digital card game, released on October 18. Ahead of the holidays and new year, more details about what players can expect from Marvel Snap was released in a roadmap. The roadmap is split into three sections: "coming soon," "in development," and "in concept." Coming soon means features under this category will be launched in the near future. Battle Mode Vs. Friends is one such update, and it's been highly anticipated since November's tease. Currently, there's no way to play against your friends and Battle Mode Vs. Friends rectifies that. But Battle Mode will be different from the standard Ranked matches. Each player will have 10 bars of health and Snaps double damage done to the opponent's health. For example, if you Snap, then the damage is doubled from two to four. If you retreat, damage received is halved from two to one. Players keep playing matches until one of them loses all health. Now Playing: Marvel Snap - Official Announcement Trailer and Gameplay First Look There's still no confirmed release date, but the dev team plans to release Battle Mode Vs. Friends in the next month or two--implying players should see it in-game at the latest in Feburary. Name changes are also coming soon. Previously, you weren't able to edit usernames, and now you can. Russian and Vietnamese languages will also be added soon, along with artist credits on cards. The second category, in development, are ideas that the dev team is working on--but could be subject to changes. One of them is Smart Deck, which basically is where the AI helps you "finish" your decks or give suggestions on what cards should go in a deck. Additionally, unranked and competitive game modes are in development. Concepts are purely ideas, with no engineering done yet. Thing in this category are Guilds (Social Systems), Infinity Rank Leaderboard, Collectible Emotes and Card Emojis, Mythic Variants, Booster Magnets, Avatars & Titles by Deck, PC Controller Support, Season Cache Improvements, and In-Game Events. Marvel Snap won Best Mobile Game at The Game Awards. It also made it onto GameSpot's top 10 games of 2022 list. Every Marvel Snap Card Revealed So Far Marvel Snap is a new collectible card game with some unique mechanics that make it more fast-paced than the average CCG. Turns take place simultaneously and matches are said to only last about three minutes. You'll be competing with another player unleashing their own roster of Marvel characters to control iconic locations from the Marvel universe, and whoever has control of two out of the three at the end of the game wins. Marvel Snap features more than 150 Marvel characters, each with multiple art variants, and more than 50 locations. We've seen just a handful of cards so far, but you can sign up at the the official site to sign up for the limited closed beta on Android that will take place ahead of launch. In the meantime, we've compiled all of the known cards below, including a look at some of the artwork for cosmetic variants that will be unlocked through play. Check out our in-depth Marvel Snap preview for more on the new CCG. link : https://www.gamespot.com/articles/marvel-snap-new-battle-mode-vs-friends-likely-coming-soon-in-the-next-month-or-two-new-roadmap-reveals/1100-6510139/

Epic is moving to exclusive support of its online services suite, and that means older games are gone. Epic Games announced today that it is switching off "out-of-date online services and servers(opens in new tab)" for a number of its older games, including the Rock Band and Unreal games, as it moves to exclusive support of Epic Online Services. Epic's online services SDK originated in Fortnite(opens in new tab), and handles everything from basics like friends lists, voice chat, and matchmaking to more developer-focused functionality like inventory and purchase management, game analytics, and support requests. Earlier this year it was expanded to include crossplay support, first with PlayStation and then between Epic and Steam(opens in new tab). With that system now well established, Epic is moving "to solely support Epic Online Services with its unified friends system, voice chat features, parental controls, and parental verification features." That means Epic's older online games are being cut loose. The good news is that most of those games will remain playable offline, either solo or with local multiplayer. Impacted games that will remain playable include: 1000 Tiny Claws Dance Central 1-3 ("Note: Dance Central VR online multiplayer will remain available") Green Day: Rock Band Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess Rock Band 1-3 ("Note: Rock Band 4 online multiplayer will remain available") The Beatles: Rock Band Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars Unreal Gold Unreal II: The Awakening Unreal Tournament 2003 Unreal Tournament 2004 Unreal Tournament 3 ("Note: We have plans to bring back online features via Epic Online Services in the future.") Unreal Tournament: Game of the Year Edition Those games will also be removed from sale on all digital storefronts, and in-game DLC purchases will be disabled. For some reason, Epic has also pulled the Mac and Linux versions of Hatoful Boyfriend and Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star, although it remains available for purchase on Steam. A handful of games will become completely inaccessible after the switch is flipped. That includes Battle Breakers, which is shutting down on December 30, and Rock Band Blitz, the Rock Band Companion app, SingSpace, and the alpha version of the 'new' Unreal Tournament(opens in new tab) that was announced in 2014, all of which will be closed on January 24, 2023. Players who made purchases in Battle Breakers using Epic's direct payment system within the past 180 days will be given refunds automatically. The end of online services for Unreal Tournament games isn't quite the same as it is for newer shooters. Players can presumably still set up dedicated servers that others can connect to and play on, but without a master server list for server browsers to access, players will need to know the IP of the server they want to join in order to get into a game. That's not really a problem for a group of friends who want to get together online for some UT2K4 action, but it does mean that jumping into random pickup games is no longer an option. There is a spot of good news amidst all the darkness. Epic is apparently bringing back Unreal Tournament 3, originally released in 2007, as Unreal Tournament 3 X, fully free and cross-platform between Steam, EGS, and GOG. There's been no official announcement at this point and Epic declined to comment further (although in the announcement it did note that it has"plans to bring back online features" for UE3), but the Unreal Tournament 3 Steam page was updated earlier today with a new name, description, and functionality. "Download and launch from where you want; play with who you want," the Steam page now says. "Unreal Tournament X supports crossplay between all PC players, whether they’re logged into their Steam, Epic Games Store or GOG accounts. "No microtransactions and no strings attached. This is the fully-featured, award-winning first-person shooter you fell in love with… completely free." A release date for the 'new' Unreal Tournament 3 X hasn't been announced, and it's not currently listed on the Epic Games Store or GOG, but I would assume it'll drop fairly soon. We'll let you know when it does. link :" https://www.pcgamer.com/epic-is-delisting-almost-every-unreal-game-but-making-unreal-tournament-3-free/

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has asked for an assessment of the progress of the war in Ukraine, BBC Newsnight has learnt. Senior figures fear the PM may be taking an overly cautious approach as the war enters a key phase. One Whitehall source likened the exercise to a "Goldman Sachs dashboard" examination of the war and how UK military supplies are used. Downing Street insists that Mr Sunak is strongly supportive of Ukraine. In a tweet, Mr Sunak said the UK was with Ukraine "all the way" during a visit to the country last month, his first overseas trip as prime minister. A Downing Street source added that it was not true that Sunak was being overly cautious and that "the UK government's support for Ukraine is unwavering". But the request has raised alarm bells in some corners of Whitehall as military chiefs say weapons supplies to Ukraine may prove decisive in the winter months ahead. The Whitehall source said: "Wars aren't won [by dashboards]. Wars are won on instinct. At the start of this it was Boris (Johnson) sitting down and saying: 'Let's just go for this.' So Rishi needs to channel his inner Boris on foreign policy though not of course on anything else." The source said the audit, known as a data-driven assessment, is designed to assess the progress of the war and the significance of the UK's military contributions to Ukraine. The source said: "This is about looking at what we have put in, what we have got out." Deadly Russian strikes hit power in Ukraine again Kyiv says Russia planning major ground offensive Fighting set to slow in winter months, says US The UK has been one of the biggest suppliers of military aid to Ukraine since Russian President Vladimir Putin's forces invaded the country in February. BBC Newsnight has been told that Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, is aware of the debate within the UK and is encouraging Mr Sunak to maintain strong military support for his country. "President Zelensky has sensed what is going on," the source said. "So he has been talking to Rishi. He is trying to inspire him, saying the UK are the great liberators, the great fighters. We need you. Rise to that." The proposed assessment of the war comes at a crucial point in the conflict. Key figures in Whitehall believe that Ukraine and Russia have fought themselves to a standstill. The only way, they say, for one side to pull ahead is by substantially increasing their supply of weaponry. Russia has effectively run out of supplies. Ukraine can only resupply weapons with the help of the US and the main military powers in Europe, led by the UK. Sign of caution Whitehall sources say that Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, the chief of the defence staff, delivered that message in diplomatic terms in a lecture this week. Sir Tony made clear the Russian military "cupboard is bare" and he appeared to issue a rallying cry for continued support for Ukraine. The chief of the defence staff told the Royal United Services Institute: "Extraordinary times call for an extraordinary response. This explains why Russia is losing. And the free world is winning… Providing we maintain our cohesion and resolve, the real victory within our grasp is much more significant." Ukraine also made an appeal this week for more weaponry. General Valery Zaluzhny, the head of the Ukrainian armed forces, told the Economist: "I know that I can beat this enemy. But I need resources. I need 300 tanks, 600-700 ifvs [infantry fighting vehicles], 500 Howitzers." The US Congress gave the Pentagon approval in principle earlier this month to buy substantial weaponry for Ukraine. But the Economist reported that this may not arrive in time for a spring offensive next year. Some in Whitehall see this approach as a sign of the innate caution on Ukraine by US President Joe Biden who is understood to be concerned about provoking a wider global conflict. There are some fears in Whitehall that Mr Sunak may end up encouraging Mr Biden's caution. The source told Newsnight: "We have stiffened the US resolve at all levels - pressure from us but always friendly. We don't want Rishi to reinforce Biden's caution. We want him to pushing in the way Boris did." You can watch Nicholas Watt's full report on Newsnight at 22:30 GMT on BBC Two link: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-64006121

The zoo is now being investigated for a breach of animal rights protections. Three chimpanzees have been shot dead and four remain on the loose after mysteriously escaping from their enclosure in Sweden's Furuvik zoo. The animals sprung themselves from their enclosure at midday on Wednesday (Dec. 14) to be met with gunfire from staff, who zoo officials claimed would have been put at considerable risk had they attempted to tranquilize the apes. One chimp was wounded by the bullets and returned to its enclosure by itself, but has so far been unable to receive medical attention, meaning that it could have died. Furuvik zoo, situated around 104 miles (168 kilometers) north of Stockholm, had been closed for the end of the season when the chimps escaped by unknown means. The group, consisting of seven animals, are po[CENSORED]r in Sweden and their deaths have sparked public outrage. Furuvik zoo has responded by insisting that the killings were necessary. Related: Amazing video shows a mom chimp medicating her child's wound with insects "Chimpanzees can be perceived as peaceful, but they are extremely dangerous. They are fast, very strong and generally fearless. It can quickly escalate into a life-threatening situation," The zoo wrote on its Facebook page(opens in new tab) on Thursday (Dec. 15). "Therefore, we unfortunately had to make the decision to euthanize three of the chimpanzees that had left their enclosure. This is not something we take lightly. The safety of people is always our top priority." Three of the killed chimps have been identified by the zoo as Linda, Santino and Torsten. Linda, born in 1980, was brought to the zoo after her family was killed by poachers in Liberia. Santino was born in 1978 and was renowned for his love of art(opens in new tab), as well as being the favorite chimp of Sweden's Crown Princess Victoria. (Both Victoria and her sister, Princess Madeleine, are believed to own paintings made by the ape.) Torsten, a juvenile, was born in captivity in 2019 and was just 3 years old. His parents — Maria-Magdalena and Tjobbe — are among the three survivors. Another chimp, Manda, the adopted daughter of Linda, was heavily injured by the staffs' bullets and may have since succumbed to her wounds. The park has defended the actions of its staff, claiming that they would have not been able to anesthetize the animals without endangering themselves. "Anesthesia is not an option when a chimpanzee ventures outside its enclosure at risk to human safety," The zoo wrote on Facebook. "To shoot with an anesthetic arrow, you need to be very close to the animal. This, combined with the fact that it can take up to 10 minutes for the anesthetic to take effect, would mean a great danger to people's safety. When a chimpanzee is loose in the park, you therefore unfortunately have to shoot to kill." The decision to euthanize the animals has received widespread opprobrium from Swedish animal rights organizations, the public and the press. "It should not have been necessary to shoot the escaped apes," Ing-Marie Persson, a former caretaker who worked with the chimps for 30 years at the park told the Swedish newspaper Afton Bladet(opens in new tab). "It is deplorable. So poorly done." Swedish police confirmed on Thursday that the incident has been reported as a violation of Sweden's Animal Welfare Act, which says that animal enclosures have to be escape-proof. "It is clear that this has not been the case," Jonas Eronen, a press spokesperson for the police, told(opens in new tab) the Swedish news site Ekot. Chimps owe their formidable strength, which is 1.35 times greater than that of humans, despite their smaller size, to an increased quantity of fast-twitch muscle fibers responsible for strength and speed. While chimpanzees tend to be afraid of people in the wild, captive animals are far more accustomed to humans and therefore much more likely to attack. During attacks, chimps focus on peoples' faces, feet, hands and genitals. The Jane Goodall Institute UK(opens in new tab) notes that chimps are often unsatisfied and understimulated in human environments, increasing the danger they may pose to themselves and others. link: https://www.livescience.com/chimps-shot-dead-after-escaping-zoo

The adjustment marks the third price increase of the 2023 Lightning since August. After increasing pricing for the Ford F-150 Lightning in August and again in October, Ford has raised the bar for entry yet again, this time to $58,514. The price increases struck the more budget-oriented Pro and XLT trim levels, with the more expensive Lariat and Platinum trims being spared the increase. Destination charges were raised by $100 across the board. Ford issued a statement to Car and Driver saying customers waiting for delivery on current orders are not affected by the increase. The adjusted prices began with the new retail order bank on December 15 and will go into effect for the Q2 commercial order bank when that opens. Looking back now, the original 2022 F-150 Lightning was a bargain at the starting price of $41,669. When it reopened order banks for its electrified pickup, Ford quietly increased the price of the 2023 model for the third time since August, raising the base price to $58,514. The new price reflects an inflation of nearly $5000 since only the last round of adjustments, and it pushes the needle further out of reach for customers in search of a base electric truck. Unlike the price increases from August and October, which raised the price on each trim level, this most recent hike only seriously affects the cheaper trim levels. Apart from a $100 increase in destination charges (which happened across the board), the top two trim levels are unaffected by the recent changes. EARLIER PRICE INCREASES C/D's preferred model, the XLT, now starts at $66,014 when equipped with the standard range battery, while the XLT Extended Range moves up to $82,869. The more expensive Lariat and Platinum trims only move up with the $100 destination charge increase, to $76,369, and $97,819 respectively. According to a statement from a Ford representative to Car and Driver, the price increase is a standard business practice due to rising material costs, market factors, and ongoing supply-chain constraints. The updated pricing went into effect December 15, when order banks reopened for retail customers. Commercial pricing will increase when the Q2 order banks next open. Customers who ordered in a previous order bank and are still awaiting delivery will be unaffected by this increase. link: https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a42267926/ford-f-150-ev-pickup-pricing-increase/

As I lay in the maternity ward, I learned my mother was gravely ill. What followed was a year full of love, rage, resentment – and a strange cocktail of new life and imminent death Morwenna Ferrier Morwenna Ferrier Sat 17 Dec 2022 10.00 GMT At the top of my fridge is a small ceramic jar of stilton, and every time I open the door I can smell it. Recently, it’s started contaminating other food. This morning I binned some butter after it took on the same scent. The stilton went off in July 2019 but I can’t bring myself to throw it away. It was a flat-warming gift from my mother, even though my boyfriend, Oscar, hates strong cheese and I was then six months pregnant, so unable to eat it. When she produced it from a calligraphed paper bag, wrapped in green tissue, we didn’t tell her this. Instead, we thanked her and put the cheese in the fridge. When we moved flats two years later, the cheese came with us. The stilton had been a mistake, one of many she made before she died a year later. They began when she forgot to refrigerate the turkey at Christmas, and ended when she failed to register I was in labour. Both were symptomatic of an illness that was already fogging her mind, but because it’s easier to remember the bad things over the good – it makes the loss less gaping – now, every time I open my fridge and smell that cheese, I thank God she’s not here. A week before I was due to give birth, I realised my mother was going to die. It was late May and she had rung me at the office, repeating what a doctor had just told her – that there was a “blockage” around her liver. The vindication in her voice was palpable after feeling “not quite right” for a while. I had been doing my pelvic floor exercises at my desk and took her call in the stairwell. Down the line, I could hear her sucking her teeth, which was the sound she made when she was scratching. I had spoken to my mother every day since I left home aged 18. People were often surprised when I told them this, their raised eyebrows suggesting that a reasonable relationship with their own parents relied on more limited contact. But we were best friends and uncommonly close – the idea of going to bed without an update on her septic tank was unthinkable. On the day I found out I was having a boy, I actually felt disappointed because we wouldn’t be able to replicate the relationship. I grew rounder and happier, while my mother got thinner and sadder – the same person, just shrunk in the wash But I also rang her to check she was still alive. My mother was young, even when she died, at 69, but she had been party to her fair share of ordinary disappointment. Her father died when she was a child and, by the time she was my age, she was divorced with two young daughters. When she was 50, her second husband died (I was 18). And by 60, she’d had a heart attack, calling me with brisk alacrity right after it happened, still sitting on the kitchen floor, holding a scourer (she had been cleaning the oven). For this reason, I spoke to her little and often. The last time I had seen her was in late April, the week before Easter, in the West Country house where she, my sister and I had once lived. She looked thin, and I could tell she was secretly pleased about that. She had started to feel nauseous, first at night, then all the time, and would eat raw ginger after every meal. When she was out, she’d carry it foil-wrapped in her handbag and produce it like Canderel. Then came the itching, which consumed the whole weekend. I spent that Good Friday rubbing aqueous cream over the small lines that spooled across her back at intervals, but by Monday I’d rubbed enough. My enormous belly was itchy too, but, I yelled – and I really did yell – because I was pregnant, I couldn’t use the creams. Permanently on the lookout for a heart attack, we were blindsided when she woke up one morning in early June the colour of mustard. Her GP suspected a liver issue but, recalling her monthly whisky and soda, we all thought otherwise. Except he was right. Like most pernicious cancers, this one didn’t reveal itself until it was too late, dragging an anthology of nasty symptoms along with it. We actually never called it cancer – because of the tumour’s size and location, it wasn’t diagnosed until after she died – but like someone lost at sea, this always gave her illness an unwelcome lick of ambiguity. In the days leading up to the birth, I grew rounder and happier, while my mother got thinner and sadder – the same person, just shrunk in the wash. I cooked soups for the freezer and swam in cold ponds, the baby heaving itself around as I entered the water. In bed, I read books about motherhood by Penelope Leach and, for balance, Rachel Cusk, studying their methods like syllabuses. I still rang her every day, but the calls got shorter. The last time we spoke before the birth, I was killing time at the zoo and we had a row, this time about whether my sister would visit me in hospital, or stay with her. She won. I always knew I’d have a baby, but it wasn’t until I got together with Oscar that I actually wanted one. Then, one night, I cornered him in the shower of our old flat and gave him an ultimatum, even though (as he often reminds me) he felt the same way. To start, we played a sort of roulette, but nothing happened. Two weeks later, not pregnant and on holiday in Exmoor, I stood in a field and told him I was barren, actually using that word. By autumn, I was pregnant. I went into labour on the first Saturday in June. It was one of those days when London pretends to be another city, windless and warm, and no one knows how to dress, so they simply don’t. I was woken at around 5am by my first contraction and immediately downloaded an app to time them. In between contractions, we ate toast, and Oscar bleached the kitchen. Afternoon became night, and night became morning. By Monday, 5.30am, still contracting every 12 minutes and unslept for 48 hours, I sat on the edge of my bed watching a thin ribbon of light come through our curtains. I deleted the app. On the day I was to be discharged from the maternity ward, my mother was moved to intensive care Finally, that evening, we were in a cab to the hospital, thunder clapping across the night, pain dancing across my belly. The baby had become lodged on my pubic bone, so the following day, at 9cm, I started to push him out. This was when I got scared. But just as his head began to emerge, I was told we had to push him back up using a foetal pillow, a recent invention that is supposed to make the whole process less traumatic. There was a slim chance the baby had haemophilia so we couldn’t use forceps. There is nothing poetic about an emergency C-section – he was ejected like a cassette – and I was too wobbly to hold him. The whole thing took 60 hours, and I thought of my mother once, at 8cm, when apparently I called out for her. My sister was electric on text throughout, but I didn’t hear a peep from my mother. The weekend I went into labour, she began deteriorating at speed. I found out later that my sister (herself seven months pregnant) had driven to her house to scoop her up off the bathroom floor and take her to hospital. I also found out later that on the day I was to be discharged from the maternity ward, she was moved to intensive care. I had been too spooked to ring the hospital, but when I finally did, from the labour ward, the nurse answered her phone. There had been extensive internal bleeding, she said plainly, as if giving me directions. I handed the phone to Oscar and felt myself lurch forward. The baby shifted in its plastic box, turning towards my voice. Back home, in bed with him, that first day was unique in the way it always is: agony to ecstasy, compounded by a fast, private transformation. It was hot. Outside my window the elms had turned brown, and over the next two days I watched their bark come off in strips like banana peel while the baby foraged among the sheets for my nipples. I found the connection I shared with him so astonishing, I didn’t think it could possibly last. Four days after the birth, my sister rang and told me to catch the next train. I was at that post-op stage where you approach peeing and stairs with similar trepidation, and took her call on the loo. link: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2022/dec/17/losing-my-mother-as-my-baby-was-born

Russian President Vladimir Putin has met his military chiefs on the same day his forces launched another wave of missiles at Ukraine's infrastructure. Mr Putin spent most of Friday at the headquarters of the "special military operation" discussing ideas for what Russia's next move should be. It comes as some Ukrainian military officials claimed Russia was planning an offensive, perhaps early next year. Russian attacks on Ukraine's power grid have plunged millions into darkness. Footage from Friday's meeting showed Mr Putin flanked by Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Armed Forces Chief Valeriy Gerasimov. "We will listen to the commanders in each operational direction, and I would like to hear your proposals on our immediate and medium-term actions," the Kremlin leader was seen telling military officials on state TV. Gen Gerasimov's presence ends rumours circulating online that he had been dismissed from his position. The 67-year-old has been the target of intensive criticism from hawkish commentators, who have accused him of being too cautious. Air Force general Sergei Surovikin - who was appointed as Russia's commander in Ukraine in October - was also present at the meeting, photos released by state media showed. Ukrainian forces have made a series of major advances in recent months, including retaking Kherson - the only major city captured by Russian forces so far. And the collapse of Moscow's forces in eastern Ukraine earlier this year saw military bosses come in for sustained criticism from pro-Kremlin media figures. The meeting followed claims by the commander of Ukraine's military, Gen Valerii Zaluzhnyi, that Moscow could seek to launch a new offensive in early 2023. He warned that Russia was preparing around 200,000 troops for the attack. "I have no doubt they will have another go at Kyiv," he added. "I know how many combat units I have right now, how many combat units I have to create by the end of the year - and, most importantly, not to touch them in any way now. No matter how hard it is." He added that the attack could originate "in the direction of Kyiv" and may be launched from Belarus. In February, Russian troops advanced towards the Ukrainian capital Kyiv after crossing the border from Belarus. While the country's leader Alexander Lukashenko has repeatedly denied that his forces will join in the invasion, thousands of Russian troops are currently in the country taking part in what Moscow's defence ministry called "intensive combat training". Mr Putin will visit his Belarusian counterpart in Minsk on Monday. US says Iran now Russia's "top military backer" How Russia is rebuilding its vital link to Crimea Kyiv says Russia planning major ground offensive in new year But analysts have questioned Russia's ability to launch a new offensive on the Ukrainian capital, and White House spokesperson John Kirby said that US intelligence officials "aren't seeing any indication that there's an imminent move on Kyiv". Senior US defence officials told Reuters news agency that Russia had been forced to use decades-old ammunition with high failure rates as it burns through its supplies. They added that "the rate of fire that Russia has been using its artillery and rocket ammunition" could see them run out of reliable munitions by early 2023. Meanwhile, Ukrainian workers have spent much of Saturday trying to restore power supplies after a wave of Russian strikes hit the country's energy grid on Friday. Part of Kyiv remained without power, but mayor Vitali Klitschko said the city's metro system had restarted and the water supply had been restored. He also posted photos on Telegram of a large Christmas tree that has been adapted to meet the constraints of a wartime winter. The tree will be lit with energy-saving bulbs run off a generator, he said. Power has been restored in the country's second city of Kharkiv, authorities said, after it was left without electricity for hours following Friday's wave of strikes that targeted energy stations across the country. Russia has launched more than 1,000 missiles and Iranian-made attack drones since the wave of strikes on power infrastructure began on 10 October. International leaders - including French President Emmanuel Macron - have said the strikes amount to a war crime. The UK's Ministry of Defence says there had been an "uptick" in Russia's campaign of long-range strikes against Ukraine's critical infrastructure in recent days. link: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-64013052

Morocco was the World Cup’s underdog story after it became the first African and Arab nation to reach the semi-finals. Rabat - Croatia defeated Morocco 2-1 on Saturday to claim the 2022 World Cup’s bronze medal at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha. Scoring began very early on, with Croatia’s Josko Gvardiol placing a header into the back of Yassine Bounou’s net at the seventh minute. The Croats’ lead did not last long, as Moroccan defender Achraf Dari came back two minutes later to score another header from close range and put Morocco back in the game. Mislav Orsic put Croatia back in the lead at the 42nd minute after a shot that Bounou’s stretched hand could not quite reach. The second half saw both teams pushing into their oppositions’ halves, but solid defensive performances on both ends prevented another goal. Despite its elimination from the semi-final stage, Morocco’s national team entered history and will be leaving Qatar with heads held high for honorably representing Africa and the Arab world. Morocco defeated some global heavy-hitters, such as Belgium, Spain, and Portugal on their way to the top four. Despite an admirable performance against defending champions France, injuries and exhaustion combined with France’s attacking prowess to knock the Atlas Lions out. France will play Argentina at the Lusail Stadium on Sunday at 16:00 Moroccan time, with Les Blues hoping to become the first team to win consecutive World Cups since Brazil did so in 1962. Meanwhile, as the career of superstar Lionel Messi winds down, Argentina is searching for its first World Cup trophy since 1986 and its third overall. link: https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2022/12/353085/morocco-finishes-fourth-in-world-cup-after-loss-to-croatia
