Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has told Russians that their leader is destroying their country. Speaking after Vladimir Putin delivered a New Year address flanked by people in military uniform, Mr Zelensky said the Russian president was hiding behind his troops, not leading them. Saturday saw a day of deadly strikes across Ukraine, and Mr Zelensky said Ukrainians would not forgive Russia. At least one person died and dozens were injured in the attacks. The head of Ukraine's armed forces, Valerii Zaluzhny, said air defences had shot down 12 of 20 Russian cruise missiles on Saturday. There were further missile strikes on Kyiv just hours into the New Year on Sunday, officials said. The Ukrainian Air force said it had shot down 45 Iranian-made kamikaze drones overnight. But the strikes, which came in the opening hours of 2023, fuelled anger and hate among Ukrainians already tired of Russia's unrelenting air campaign. As explosions rocked the capital, some residents sang the national anthem, while officials accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilians while they gathered to celebrated the New Year. Andriy Nebitov, the head of the Kyiv police, posted an image to social media of a downed drone with the words "Happy New Year" scribbled across it in Russian. "That is everything you need to know about the terror state and its army," he wrote on Facebook, adding that the remains had crashed in a children's playground. In an address on his Telegram channel, Mr Zelensky said those who carried out Saturday's attacks were inhuman. Switching from Ukrainian to Russian, he then attacked Mr Putin. "Your leader wants to show you that he's leading from the front, and his military is behind him," he said. "But in fact he is hiding. He's hiding behind his military, his missiles, the walls of his residences and palaces. "He's hiding behind you, and he's burning your country and your future. No-one will forgive you for terror. No-one in the world will forgive you for that. Ukraine will not forgive." Mr Zelensky later gave a new year's address to the Ukrainian people, thanking them for their "incredible" efforts in repelling Russian advances. "We fight as one team - the whole country, all our regions. I admire you all. I want to thank every invincible region of Ukraine," he said. Mr Putin also issued a new year address which was broadcast for each of Russia's 11 time zones as they saw in 2023. The Russian leader tried to rally people behind his troops fighting in Ukraine, saying the country's future was at stake. In combative mood, Mr Putin said: "We always knew, and today it is confirmed to us yet again, that a sovereign, independent and secure future for Russia depends only on us, on our strength and will." He presented the invasion of Ukraine's sovereign territory as "defending our people and our historical lands" and said "moral, historical rightness is on our side". Mr Putin also accused the West of "provoking" Moscow to launch its invasion of Ukraine on 24 February. "The West lied about peace. It was preparing for aggression... and now they are cynically using Ukraine and its people to weaken and split Russia," he said. The new side sweep feature is expected to arrive on Twitter in January. Elon Musk announced today that Twitter users will soon be able to side swipe for switching between tweets, trends, topics, lists, and more. The new Twitter CEO has been making sweeping changes to the social media platform since his $44 billion (roughly Rs. 3.6 lakh crore) takeover. He has also suggested that several major UI changes for the platform will arrive in January. Twitter had recently rolled out the View Count for tweets feature globally, intending to showcase how alive the platform is as most users are believed to just read a tweet without interacting. Musk shared a post on Saturday revealing that a new side swipe feature will arrive on the platform in January. This feature is said to allow users to easily access recommended and followed tweets, trends, topics, and lists. Furthermore, Musk says that with the gradual improvement of Twitter AI, "recommended tweets, lists & topics will become awesome." Currently, Twitter allows users to read tweets in chronological order or the Home timeline with recommended tweets. In a recent reply to a Gadgets 360 staff member's comment, Musk responded that "several major UI improvements" will come on the microblooging site in January. According to a new study, researchers have found that your Apple Watch can accurately determine stress levels through various metrics. The researchers then developed and applied machine learning algorithms to create a prediction model. The models created are stated to feature a "high level of precision" but with a lower recall. According to the study, the Apple Watch houses "promising " potential to detect levels of stress. In addition, since the wearable is capable of collecting additional information regarding a user's health, such as sleep and activity information, further data points can be conjoined to form stress levels with even more precision. Apple does not offer stress measurement at this point, but researchers claim that an Apple Watch could be effectively used to aid in mental health care. Furthermore, Apple can offer stress preventive exercises such as breathing and much more to eliminate stress signals. Here's what we know about the long-awaited Skull and Bones Skull and Bones could finally be arriving in 2023, after suffering a handful of delays over the last few years. The game was initially revealed all the way back in 2017, and is being worked on by Ubisoft Singapore. Since its reveal, Skull and Bones has been reworked significantly, and now looks and plays a lot differently to the game we were first shown. The upcoming pirate RPG is now much more of a survival game, wherein players take a lowly pirate through contracts and missions, increasing their reputation along the way. Sailing and ship combat are still the main systems here, but there seems to be a heavier emphasis on customization than in what was shown when the game was revealed. Co-op and multiplayer are still a big part of the experience as well, and you'll be happy to hear that crossplay and cross-progression will give you plenty of options. After many delays, and the launch of the new generation of consoles, Skull and Bones has now dropped PS4 and Xbox One. It'll still be on PC but instead, it's coming to the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S, too. There have been reports of Skull and Bones' development troubles, which we'll go into more below, but we started getting hints that Ubisoft was getting ready to announce a new released date when, back in March, the game's website received a redesign. Another hint dropped during an earnings call in February 2022 (via VGC), Ubisoft stated that it is aiming to release Skull and Bones during its next fiscal year, meaning the developer was aiming to release the game by April 2023. Thanks to an Ubisoft Forward, we learned that Skull and Bones planned to launch on November 8, 2022, a day before God of War Ragnarok. This obviously did not hold true. Former President Donald Trump's tax returns have been released, ending a bitter six-year long battle to gain greater insights into his finances. The returns stretch from 2015 through 2020, covering Mr Trump's candidacy and time in the White House. They give details of various entities through which he would have paid tax, including holdings companies and personal income. The BBC is reviewing the documents. Responding to Friday's release of thousands of pages of tax returns, Mr Trump's camp warned that the disclosure will lead to the US political divide becoming "far worse". "The Democrats should have never done it, the Supreme Court should have never approved it, and it's going to lead to horrible things for so many people," his statement said. Ever since his entry into politics, critics have been keen to get Mr Trump - whose foundational pitch to voters had been that his business success made him the best choice to run the country - to show what his wealth actually looked like. He had steadfastly refused. Democrats who control the House of Representatives and oversaw the release argued that it was a necessary act of oversight. Representative Don Beyer, a member of the House Ways and Means Committee which released the documents, said on Friday that Mr Trump "abused the power of his office to block basic transparency on his finances and conflicts of interest which no president since Nixon has foregone." The committee also found that the Internal Revenue Service - the US federal entity charged with tax collection - failed to audit Mr Trump during his first two years in office, and only began doing so after congressional oversight proceedings were started in 2019. Here's what it took to get to the disclosures made public. Trump defies tradition For decades, presidential candidates and officeholders have released their tax returns to the public in the interest of transparency and accountability. The longstanding tradition is "mainly about trying to ensure the public that the president is operating free of conflicts and entanglements, and taxes are sort of the window into the financial soul of someone," said Steve Rosenthal, senior fellow at the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center. But Mr Trump "crashed all the norms," Mr Rosenthal said, by refusing to release his tax returns as a candidate when he ran for office in the 2016 presidential election. His fierce insistence on the matter invited scrutiny and speculation among critics that he had something to hide - could it be that Mr Trump was not as rich as he claimed, some asked, or that he had paid less tax than he should? Supporters, meanwhile, backed his right to his privacy. After all, there is no legal requirement for a candidate to release their tax returns. New York Times investigations But over the course of his presidency and afterward, the public has gradually come to gain some insight into Mr Trump's personal tax history. A great deal of those revelations come from an investigation published by the New York Times in 2020, which obtained two decades of Mr Trump's tax returns from before his time in office. The documents gave unprecedented insight into Mr Trump's businesses. They revealed he paid little to no federal income taxes over that period, and that Mr Trump had reported in his tax filings that his businesses lost significant amounts of money - despite his public boasts of financial success. In 2017, the Times reported, Trump paid just $750 (£623) in federal income tax despite being a billionaire. The New York Times reporting "calls into question whether he's a billionaire, or is there some trick he uses to avoid pay taxes, legal or not," Mr Rosenthal said. Taking the fight to the Supreme Court Meanwhile, in Washington, Democrats began using their powers to conduct oversight of Mr Trump once they gained control of the House of Representatives in early 2019. The Ways and Means Committee fought for three years to obtain Mr Trump's tax returns. The fight went all the way to the US Supreme Court this year, and in November, the justices refused to block the release of Mr Trump's tax returns to the committee, thereby paving the way for their release. On 21 December, the committee voted to release the tax returns they had obtained to the public, with the vote splitting along party lines. From an eastern kingsnake swallowing a timber rattlesnake nearly twice its size to a nasty battle between a venomous cobra and an 8-year-old boy, there was no shortage of strange snake headlines this year. Here are seven startling snake stories from 2022. 1. Cobra bites boy; boy bites it back When a venomous cobra took a bite out of an 8-year-old boy in India after coiling around his hand, the child didn't hesitate to seek revenge on the snake, sinking his teeth into its scaly skin — twice. After the incident, the boy's parents rushed him to the hospital, where doctors deemed the injury a rare venom-free "dry bite." The child walked away unscathed and with a cool story to tell his friends. The snake wasn't quite so lucky. It died. 2. Snake chokes to death on a giant centipede Humans aren't the only living things that bite off more than they can chew. A rim rock crowned snake (Tantilla oolitica), considered the rarest snake in North America, gave scientists a fright when they came upon the corpse of one of these elusive creatures at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo, Florida. Lodged in its mouth and partway down its gullet was a giant centipede, which the snake had attempted to swallow headfirst. The car's LT6 V-8 began to rattle and smoke after losing power on the highway. As exciting as the wider bodywork and refined aerodynamics of the new Chevrolet Corvette Z06 are, the 5.5-liter flat-plane LT6 V-8 engine sitting behind the driver is the star of the show. Unfortunately for new Z06 owner Marco Garcia, the motorsport-derived engine in his Corvette Z06 failed after traveling just 52 miles on the initial delivery drive. Garcia purchased the black-over-red Corvette Z06 1LZ on December 23 from Covina Hills Chevrolet in Covina, California, according to his YouTube videos. The in-demand sports car carried a sticker price of $113,975, but documentation fees and dealer charges saw the final sales price reach $182,457.38. Garcia has owned two Stingrays at this point, and he arrived to purchase the Z06 in his modified C8. With the purchase process complete, one of the salesmen at the dealer offered to follow Garcia back to his construction yard with said Stingray. Garcia took them up on this offer and agreed to drop the salesman back at the dealership following the exchange. After dropping the Stingray at the yard, the salesman jumped into the Z06 for the relatively short trek back to the dealership. Garcia noted in his follow-up video that the two enjoyed a few gentle pulls on the ride but didn't push the car too hard. Garcia further noted that he is already quite familiar with the break-in procedure for the C8 platform due to his previous ownership experiences. Shortly after he returned the salesman to the dealership, things went horribly wrong. Garcia noticed a lack of power coming from the engine and opted to pull off the highway to investigate. A check-engine light and some aggressive rattling noises accompanied the issue, which began with just 52 miles on the odometer, Garcia says. After walking into town to charge his phone, Garcia was told by the dealer that he couldn't tow the car back there that evening. Furthermore, OnStar struggled to help as they didn't have the proper warranty information yet for such a new car. Garcia was forced to tow the Z06 back to his construction yard that night. Things didn't improve much the following day. OnStar sent a tow truck for the car on the 24th, but that truck wasn't authorized to return the car to the selling dealer. That created a new issue, apparently requiring Garcia to spend hours going through the OnStar service for assistance yet again. Once the car actually arrived at the proper dealership, a ton of error codes began popping up in Garcia's email inbox, sent via OnStar services. The most notable of these issues was listed as an engine and transmission system error, which you'd expect based on the audio found in the clip alone. Garcia says he's had it with the situation, and that he is not interested in continuing his Z06 ownership experience. Once the car is repaired, he's planning to move it on to the next owner. "Dead Z06 for sale pretty soon," said Garcia in the follow-up post. "I guess I'll probably try and fix it and sell it to someone else. It's a shame." Since the moment the Z06 debuted, General Motors has been adamant that the LT6 V-8 is a bombproof engine. The LT6.R V-8 has been utilized by the Corvette Racing C8.R for a few years at this point, with the street motor featuring an almost identical top-end design. That said, large-displacement flat-plane V-8s are known to be tricky, as was previously highlighted by Ford's Voodoo V-8 and its vibration concerns. A GM spokesperson confirmed to R&T that the company is aware of the incident involving this Z06 and is actively looking into the situation. As is common practice with this kind of failure, GM will likely tear down this motor to figure out what went wrong with this specific example. Hopefully this particular LT6 was just a bad egg. Russia attacked Ukraine with 16 Iranian-made drones overnight - with seven of them targeted at the capital, Kyiv, Ukrainian officials have said. All of the drones were destroyed, according to Kyiv's military. A day earlier, on Thursday, a wave of Russian missiles was fired at cities across the country. Russia says it has been striking energy and military targets to weaken Ukraine's capacity to move army reserves and repair equipment. In the capital, an air alert was announced after 02:00 local time on Friday and residents were urged to take shelter. Five of the drones were shot down in the air and two "on approach", said Vitali Klitschko, the city's mayor. Reuters news agency reported hearing several blasts, as well as the sound of anti-aircraft fire. But the attack seemed to be over by dawn, it added. No-one was reported injured in Kyiv, but windows in two buildings were damaged, Mr Klitschko added. A fire was also started by one of the drones in a four-storey administrative building, according to the presidential office. Ukraine's armed forces said the country had been hit by more than 180 strikes of different kinds in the past 24 hours - mostly on energy infrastructure, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. The attack came from "various directions with air and sea-based cruise missiles", the air force said, noting that a number of "kamikaze" drones had also been used. At least three people were killed and six were wounded, according to Ukrainian Interior Minister Denys Monastyrskyi. Moscow's defence ministry described it as a "massive strike" against military sites using "long-range high-precision weapons", and the goal was achieved, according to state media. Most were repelled, but there were power cuts in Kyiv, Odesa, Kherson, Lviv and other regions, said Mr Zelensky. He stressed it would have been much worse without Ukraine's air defence systems. It is believed Russia has been using Iranian-made Shahed-136 drones in the Ukraine conflict since mid-September. Iran has denied this. Dozens of Russian attacks have pounded Ukraine in recent weeks, causing repeated power outages across the country. While Walid Regragui’s appointment as head coach put him on an illustrious, long list of Moroccan coaches to have taken charge of the national team, he became the first coach ever to lead an African or Arab team to the semi-finals of a FIFA World Cup. Regragui’s achievements transcend Morocco, as he is now celebrated across Africa and the Arab world as a great leader and an intelligent tactician who proved that African and Arab nations can go against heavy-weight champions and emerge victorious. Uncertain debut But not everyone was happy or ranked Regragui high prior to his appointment as head coach of the Atlas Lions. When many voices -- including on this website -- started urging the leadership of the Moroccan football league to consider appointing a young and capable Moroccan coach in replacement of the self-absorbed Vahid Halilhodzic, others appeared to raise doubts about the quality of local coaches and called instead for the appointment of a big name, meaning a European coach, to take Morocco to the World Cup. After being at the helm of the team for only three months, however, Regragui not only put together a formidable squad, but his leadership and tactical intelligence helped the Atlas Lions knock out world-class opponents like Portugal and Spain on their way to making history as the first African and Arab team to reach the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup. Generational responsibility But also adding to his team's historic achievement in Qatar is the young coach's sense of purpose and generational responsibility. In interviews and post-match conferences as his team dazzled the footballing world and made Moroccans proud, Regragui never ceased to speak of the literal and symbolic importance a solid Moroccan performance could have for future generations. The Atlas Lions' odds-defying results have made a compelling case that aspiring to win the World Cup and put an end to European and South American supremacy is a “realistic goal.” He elaborated rather poetically: “Africa has never won a World Cup. Why not give them this dream? In 20 or 30 years' time, maybe Morocco or Senegal will win the World Cup and then you will look back and say: 'He did say that.'” Describing Morocco as the tournament's Rocky Balboa after its jaw-dropping victory against Portugal in the quarter-finals, the French-born coach said that the main lesson from Morocco's defeat of superior-looking European team's was that success is not solely built on talent and money. As important for a success story is determination and dedication, he argued. ‘Effective football’ Often nicknamed “the Moroccan Guardiola,” Regragui is famous for his impeccable sense of humor. As Atlas Lions' fans appeared to be struggling to find a fitting nickname for him, Regragui encouraged them to call him “the avocado head [coach],” a quip on the contemptible name many skeptical pundits and naysayers had used in August to refer to him after he was appointed to lead Morocco to the World Cup. Morocco’s World Cup success prompted many analysts to take a closer look at Regragui’s field tactics. FIFA went as far as to argue that his tactics can “change the course of African football.” Regragui’s field tactics enacted a break from Africa’s decades-long tradition of capitalizing on single talented players, FIFA wrote. Instead of relying on individual-based tactics, the Moroccan coach opted for “effective football.” The FIFA statement elaborated: “Unapologetic about his emphasis on being solid in the back, he used his midfield’s relentless energy and his forwards’ flair to soak up pressure and hit opponents on the counter as and when needed.” Playing career with the national team Between 2001 and 2009, Regragui made 45 appearances with Morocco’s national team. He was part of the team that finished in second place at the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) in Tunisia. He played as a right-back for five French clubs throughout his career. In 2002, he won the Ligue 2 with Ajaccio as a player. Regragui started his career as a coach with the Rabat-based club Fath Union Sport (FUS) between 2014 and 2019, and spent some time coaching in Qatar as well. The Moroccan coach made a name for himself during his time coaching the Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca. The highlight of his career with Wydad was when they beat the Egyptian club Al Ahly to win the 2022-22 African Champions League. During his time with FUS, Regragui won the Moroccan Throne Cup and the Botola Pro 1, Morocco's top-tier football league. In the time he spent in the Qatari league, meanwhile, the Moroccan coach clinched the Qatar Stars League trophy with Al-Duhail in 2020. Regragui was also part of the Moroccan national team's coaching staff, working as assistant to former head coach Rachid Taoussi in late 2012 and early 2013. Getting the last laugh Once he was appointed to lead the national team to the World Cup in Qatar, one of Regragui's defining decisions was to convince Chelsea's Hakim Ziyech and Bayern Munich's Noussair Mazraoui, had quit the national team following disputes with former coach Vahid Halilhodzic, to return to play for Morocco. A few, marginal voices had appeared to criticize that decision, denouncing it as akin to kowtowing to entitled star players with no compelling track record of impressive performances for the national team. But with both players’ commanding presence in their respective positions having been integral to Morocco's historic run in Qatar, Regragui has surely had the last laugh over skeptics and critics who had predicted failure for his team in Qatar.
