EV sedan to take on Tesla Model 3 78 kWh battery promises 275-mile EPA range 408 horsepower and 487 lb-ft of torque 0-62 mph acceleration of less than 5 seconds Priced from $59,900 Deliveries begin this summer Polestar, the EV and performance division of Volvo, launches its 2021 Polestar 2 model, a midsize 5-door liftback for sale in North America, China, and select European markets this summer. The new electric car targets a 275-mile EPA range with its 78-kWh lithium-ion battery and touts sub-5-second 0-62 mph acceleration. The total output of 408 horsepower and 487 lb-ft of torque from its dual electric motors drive all four wheels. How much will the 2021 Polestar 2 cost? The 2021 Polestar 2 starts at $59,900. The new pricing is just over $3,000 less than the original price tag. The new price takes into consideration thresholds for individual state rebates. By coming in under $60,000, the Polestar 2 remains eligible for local incentives of about $2,000. Added to the federal tax credit of $7,500, potential savings amount to $10,000. “We are quite enthusiastic to announce the U.S. pricing for the Polestar 2,” said Gregor Hembrough, Head of Polestar USA. “The MSRP is lower than we originally targeted, and will be extended to all of our current reservation holders. “With an online purchase option, lower pricing, considerable tax incentives, and production already underway, the Polestar 2 is well-positioned for a successful entry into the U.S. market.” The Volvo connection Polestar 2 rides on Volvo’s Compact Modular Architecture platform which has a 27-cell battery pack in the floor. As Volvo’s performance unit, Polestar offers a $5,000 Performance Pack upgrade. This package includes Öhlins dampers and Brembo brakes. Other Polestar touches feature the division’s signature gold seat belts and brake calipers. Unique 20-inch wheels are a $1,200 option, as is a choice of a metallic paint scheme, which also costs $1,200 extra. The look of the Polestar 2 is clean, with strong character lines that carry Volvo’s expression of Scandinavian luxury. Headlamp units bisected by LED daytime running lights flank the horizontal grille. The sculpted body surfaces, C-pillar, and rear taillamp treatment share some Volvo cues. Inside, the cabin has a clean modern design with traditional instruments in front of the driver. An 11.0-inch vertical touchscreen sits in the center of the dash. Infotainment uses an Android operating system that features Google Maps, Google Assistant, and Google Play. There’s a gearshift lever in the center console and a sport steering wheel with integrated controls. The cabin boasts vegan-based upholstery for the seating, door inserts, and other surfaces. The 2021 Polestar 2 also boasts Phone-as-Key technology. This setup allows car-sharing and connected services that include pick-up and delivery of the vehicle for service. Where does the company build Polestar 2? The 2020 Polestar 2 production is in China for global export.

The cold-blooded murders of 24 women, children and babies at a hospital in the Afghan capital was horrific enough. But as Frederic Bonnot made his way through the bullet-riddled maternity unit, he realised something more. Warning: Readers may find details in this story upsetting The attackers had walked straight past a number of other wards, all closer to the entrance of Kabul's Dasht-e-Barchi hospital, and made straight for the maternity unit. To him, it meant one thing: this was no mistake. "What I saw in the maternity demonstrates it was a systematic shooting of the mothers," Bonnot, Medicin Sans Frontiere's (MSF) Head of Programmes in Afghanistan, said. "They went through the rooms in the maternity, shooting women in their beds. It was methodical. "They came to kill the mothers." 'Beyond words' Amina was just two hours old when the attack started. The little girl was the third child for Bibi Nazia and her husband, Rafiullah. Back at home, they already had a girl and a boy. Nazia had gone to the hospital with her mother, and Amina was born at 08:00. It should have been a day of celebration for Rafiullah. But at 10:00, the attack began. Explosions were heard by people outside the hospital complex. Those with family and friends inside rushed to the scene - including Rafiullah. "He ran from side to side. But he couldn't do anything, no one allowed him to go inside," his cousin Hamidullah Hamidi told BBC Pashto. Inside the walls of the hospital, three gunmen were moving through the 55-bed maternity unit, which has been run by MSF since 2014. A total of 26 mothers and mothers-to-be were inside at the time. Ten managed to flee to safe rooms; the other 16 - including Bibi Nazia and Amina - were not so lucky. Three of the 16 mothers were shot and killed in the delivery room, along with their unborn babies. Bibi Nazia was among the other eight mothers killed; little Amina was shot in the legs. Five more were wounded. Two young boys were also killed in the carnage, along with a midwife. One woman, named only as Khadija, told Reuters news agency how one of the gunmen had pointed his weapon at her, before turning it on two other people. The gun battle between the militants and Afghan security forces went on for four hours as many of the maternity unit's patients and staff took cover. The gunmen were all killed. One baby born was at the hospital during those hours. A midwife, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed to the AFP news agency how the woman sheltering with her in the safe room gave birth while trying not to make a sound. "We helped her with our bare hands, we had nothing else in the room except some toilet paper and our scarves," the midwife said. "When the baby was born, we cut the umbilical cord using our hands. We used our headscarves to wrap the baby and the mother." Frederic Bonnot described how those inside the safe rooms could only listen as explosions and gunfire ricocheted around the building. By the time they were finished, he said, they found "walls sprayed with bullets, blood on the floors in the rooms, vehicles burnt out and windows shot through". "It's shocking," said Bonnot. "We know this area has suffered attacks in the past, but no one could believe they would attack a maternity unit. "This country is sadly used to seeing horrific events," he added. "But what happened Tuesday is beyond words." It is true Afghanistan is used to seeing violence most of the rest of the world cannot imagine. A BBC investigation last year found that, on average, 74 men, women and children were killed every day throughout the month of August. Within hours of the Dasht-e-Barchi hospital attack, a suicide bomber had killed at least another 32 people attending a policeman's funeral in eastern Nangarhar province. Meanwhile, in northern Balkh province, at least 10 people were killed and many others injured in an air strike by US forces, reports said. Residents and the Taliban claimed the victims were all civilians, but defence officials said all those killed were militants. Two days later, at least five civilians were killed in an attack in Paktia province's capital, Gardez. The killings come at a time when, technically, the country should be moving towards peace talks. The US signed a deal with the Taliban militant group in February, hoping to end an 18-year conflict which has ravaged Afghanistan. As part of the agreement, the Taliban agreed to enter talks with the Afghan government, something they had so far refused to do. But as violence continues to shatter the country, any hope for a peace deal looks to be on delicate ground: after the hospital attack, President Ashraf Ghani ordered the resumption of offensive operations against the Taliban and other groups. He accused the militants of ignoring repeated calls for a reduction in violence. No group has said it carried out the maternity hospital massacre. The Taliban claimed the Gardez city blast, while the Islamic State (IS) group took responsibility for the funeral attack. However, US envoy Zalmay Khalilzad has blamed IS for the hospital attack, saying the jihadists want to undermine recent peace efforts and fan a sectarian war. His words are of little use to those caught up in Tuesday's attack - to the grandmother who had to pick up her fatally-injured new-born grandson from the floor, to the murdered midwife who had worked for MSF for six years, or to the survivors who listened helplessly as the assault unfolded. The babies were moved to the Ataturk hospital in Kabul, the families who had gathered outside the maternity unit following - desperately waiting to see if their child's name was called. In the confusion, women appeared to offer to adopt the babies, sparking at least one angry confrontation with a grieving grandfather, according to the New York Times. Officials hoped to reunite all the children by Friday. Little Amina is now recovering in a different hospital. She has already had one round of surgery, with at least two more to go. The doctors hope they can save the leg shattered by a bullet, but they don't know yet. The family fear for her future if they do have to amputate - life is not likely to be easy for a disabled girl in Afghanistan. But right now, they are just trying to understand why, as the country supposedly moves towards peace, this happened. "People have been shouting for 19 or 20 years not to commit atrocities," Hamidullah Hamidi said. "But they have not stopped. These people will not stop committing atrocities."

Pros Expressive styling Practical hatchback design German engineering Roomy interior Cons Performance doesn’t match that sporty styling At this price, all the driver assist systems should be standard Kia Stinger offers more of everything for less money What’s New this Year? New Car-Net telematics with Wi-Fi hotspot SEL Premium R-Line gains Lane Assist, 20-inch wheels, and R-Line content Warranty drops from 6 years/72,000 miles to 4-years/50,000 miles Complimentary scheduled maintenance for 2 years or 24,000 miles People Also Ask What is the 2020 Volkswagen Arteon? The Arteon recently replaced the Volkswagen CC as the company’s flagship sedan. It is larger than the Passat sedan and has a more powerful engine and more advanced suspension. It shares some interior tech with the Passat, as well as an 8-speed automatic transmission and available 4Motion all-wheel drive. It also features a hatchback vs. a trunk and has a more spacious interior. Where is the 2020 Volkswagen Arteon made? The Arteon is built in Germany at VW’s Lower Saxony, Emden facility. Is the 2020 Volkswagen Arteon reliable? Although it’s too new to accurately say one way or the other, both the Passat and Jetta seem to be holding up fairly well. VW’s long-term reliability and resale figures have a spotty history, but seem to be doing better as of late. Still, we doubt the Arteon will come anywhere close to the resale and reliability marks found in the Honda Accord or Kia Stinger, but it will probably be on par with the Buick Regal Sportback. Is the 2020 Volkswagen Arteon a good value? If you’re a die-hard fan of German cars, the Arteon offers a way to get into something similar to a loaded A5 Sportback or BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe without the big price tag. However, with a price range between $35-45K, you could get more performance, features, and style from a rear-drive Kia Stinger. The Buick Regal Sportback also offers a reasonably priced alternative, as does the Honda Accord Sport, which forgoes the hatchback design and all-wheel-drive option, but can be had with a manual transmission. Overview With its premium amenities, artistically sculpted exterior, and clean, modern interior, the 2020 Volkswagen Arteon sits as a viable alternative to the smaller Audi A5 Sportback and more expensive Audi A7. This 5-passenger liftback sedan features an adaptive suspension with various driver modes for Comfort, Normal, and Sport as well as Comfort+ and Sport+ settings. The Arteon’s 268-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged engine is far from slow, but it doesn’t really deliver the kind of performance we’d expect at this price. We’re also not impressed by the fact that the Arteon’s full suite of driver assists is not standard across the line. Rivals like the Kia Stinger offer the option of a twin-turbocharged V6, while comparably-equipped luxury models such as the Acura TLX and Nissan Maxima undercut the Arteon’ price. Still, if you hold German engineering in high regard, the 2020 VW Arteon is an affordable way to get it without compromising quality, features, safety, or style. Driving the 2020 Volkswagen Arteon We drove the Volkswagen Arteon on California’s smooth and sweeping Highway 33, which winds its way through the Los Padres National Forest and felt tailor-made for this VW, whose enviable ride comfort fortunately doesn’t come at the expense of good body control in turns. Despite the large opening for the rear hatch, the Arteon’s unibody chassis felt tight, and the VW’s ’s turbocharged 2.0-liter engine — which produces 268 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque at only 1,950 rpm — didn’t feel overwhelmed by the Arteon’s approximately 3,500-pound curb weight. The engine delivered power in a smooth, linear fashion, while the 8-speed automatic transmission got its job done without calling much attention to itself. We liked its smooth shifts and its traditional P-R-N-D-L shift gate, which, unlike today’s raft of confusing electronic shifters, left no doubt as to which gear the Arteon was in. Moreover, the shift paddles of the SEL Premium R-Line model we drove proved especially handy, particularly when downshifting for a turn and then powering out of said corner. In these deceleration situations, the throttle automatically blipped to smooth the downshifts, making it sound as if you were a driving pro. Then, during the many long corners that Highway 33 throws at you, the Arteon’s automatic torque vectoring would help keep VW’s new fastback sedan on its intended line, totally unbeknownst to the driver. This helped reduce understeer, while Sport mode — which firms the suspension and steering while also speeding up the sweep of the Arteon’s active LED headlights into corners — kept body roll in check. While it was nice to be driving an SEL Premium with standard 4Motion all-wheel drive — which can send as much as 50 percent of the power to the rear wheels — its value would have been better appreciated on tighter roads, or ones that are slick or slushy. Favorite Features DRIVING MODE SELECTION As part of the 2020 VW Arteon’s standard fare, the Drive Mode Selection system allows the driver to select various performance modes via touchscreen inputs. The system works by modifying settings for suspension stiffness, throttle response and steering feel and operates in Comfort, Normal and Sport mode, which can be amplified by two additional settings: Comfort+ and Sport+. VOLKSWAGEN DIGITAL COCKPIT The Digital Cockpit is a sight to behold. Standard on SEL and higher trims, the device replaces traditional analog gauges with a 12.3-inch digital display featuring five separate profiles. The screen can mimic an analog speedo and tach, or fill the screen with the navigation map. 2020 Volkswagen Arteon Interior Riding on a 5-inch-longer wheelbase than the old Volkswagen CC, the 2020 VW Arteon has plenty of space for 6-footers with ample rear-seat legroom. Despite a sharply raked roofline and rear window, the rear seat cushions sit low enough that tall passengers won’t be bumping their heads at the roof’s edge. The Arteon is also wider than either the CC or Passat, so three across the rear seat is doable, even if just for short trips. The overall feeling inside the cabin is one of reserved luxury, with handsomely styled seats that are also marvelously supportive, although some may find them a bit snug. The Arteon’s dash is hardly revolutionary, however, with lots of standard VW styling and switchgear. We do like the analog clock mounted high on the dash that brings a bit more elegance to the cabin. Cargo space is also quite generous, thanks in no small part to the Arteon’s rear hatch design. When raised, it reveals 27.2 cubic feet of cargo space. Fold the 60/40-split rear seats flat, and that figure increases to 55 cubic feet. For reference, that’s enough room for two adults to roll out two sleeping bags and spend the night. 2020 Volkswagen Arteon Exterior Most people agree that the 2020 Volkswagen Arteon is a striking automobile, a sporty fastback sedan highlighted by prominent character lines that travel the length of the vehicle and terminate in a slatted grille with a large VW logo. It’s low and wide, the antithesis of a crossover SUV. We also like its sleek coupe-like roofline, its abundant chrome trim, its frameless side doors, and how the clamshell-style hood folds down on each side to meet the front fenders. All told, this new VW looks refined, with the R-Line trim completing the look nicely with gloss-black bumper trim, badges on the grille and front fenders, a black trunk spoiler and 20-inch wheels. 2020 Volkswagen Arteon Standard Features The entry-level Arteon, the SE, is well equipped with an 8-inch infotainment display, standard leatherette seats (heated in front), keyless access with a push-button starter, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto capability, Car-Net, and Wi-Fi hotspot plus 3-zone climate control. Also standard are LED headlights, rain-sensing windshield wipers, the XDS differential-lock enhancement system, heated side mirrors, and cruise control. Standard safety systems include forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind-spot monitoring. Order an Arteon SEL, and you’ll get the 12.3-inch digital instrument display, a panoramic sunroof, a Nappa leather interior, auto-dimming side mirrors, driver’s seat memory, adaptive headlights, and adaptive cruise control with stop & go feature. 2020 Volkswagen Arteon Options Most options are bundled according to trim. More notable upgrades available on the 2020 Volkswagen Arteon include 4Motion all-wheel drive, 19- or 20-inch wheels, and paddle shifters. The R-Line includes special R-Line badging on the grille and front fenders, plus gloss-black trim on the bumpers and a black rear spoiler, stainless-steel scuff plates, and pedal caps, 20-inch wheels along with a unique steering wheel that has paddle shifters. Inside, the R-Line’s black headliner is complemented by contrast stitching on the steering wheel and shift knob. The SEL Premium R-Line includes the R-Line’s features plus 4Motion, Lane Assist, rear park assist, auto high beams, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, a 360-degree overhead camera system, ventilated front seats with a massaging driver’s seat and the 700-watt Dynaudio sound system. A power hatchback also is standard on the SEL Premium R Line — just swing your foot below the rear bumper and the hatch automatically opens. 2020 Volkswagen Arteon Engine The 2020 Volkswagen Arteon has only one engine, but it’s a good blend of power and fuel economy. The turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, a direct-injected gasoline powerplant, puts out 268 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque at only 1,950 rpm, aided by variable intake and exhaust timing, together with variable-exhaust valve lift. Turbocharger boost arrives quickly to create a smooth swell of power. Premium fuel is recommended. Similarly, one transmission is available in the Arteon, an 8-speed automatic. Made by Aisin, this gearbox shifts smoothly and unobtrusively, and it reacts quickly to the shift paddles. The XDS Cross Differential system acts like a limited-slip differential, using the ABS and traction control systems to apply light brake pressure to the inside wheel when traveling at highway speeds. This system helps compensate for understeer during aggressive cornering. 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 268 horsepower @ 5,500 rpm 258 lb-ft of torque @ 1,950 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 22/29 mpg (FWD), 20/29 mpg (AWD) How Much Does the 2020 Volkswagen Arteon Cost? The most affordable 2020 Volkswagen Arteon, an SE model that comes with standard active suspension damping, a center differential lock, an 8-inch touchscreen, automatic emergency braking, and a blind-spot monitor, has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $35,995, not including the $1,020 destination charge. AWD, available on all new Arteon models, adds only $1,900. The VW Arteon SEL, with leather seats, a panoramic sunroof, the digital cockpit, and adaptive cruise control, is priced at $39,995. It represents a lot of car for less than $40,000, which is why it’s the model KBB recommends. The SEL R-Line starts at $41,745 and the top SEL Premium R-Line 4Motion lists for $47,695. As always, please check the KBB.com Fair Purchase Price calculator to see what others in your area have paid for their 2020 Arteon. The Arteon’s resale value is on the low side, far below the Kia Stinger, Audi A5 Sportback, and Honda Accord, but on par with the Buick Regal Sportback. Which Model is Right for Me? 2020 Volkswagen Arteon SE Adaptive dampers Keyless access and push-button start 3-zone climate control Heated 12-way power front seats with 4-way power lumbar Automatic emergency braking 2020 Volkswagen Arteon SEL 12.3-inch digital cockpit Panoramic glass sunroof Nappa leather seating Navigation Adaptive cruise control with stop & go feature 2020 Volkswagen Arteon SEL R-Line R-Line front bumper and grille 20-inch alloy wheels R-Line steering wheel with paddle shifters R-Line interior treatment 2020 Volkswagen Arteon SEL Premium R-Line 4Motion all-wheel drive Power rear liftgate Dynaudio sound system Heated rear seats and heated steering wheel Ventilated front seats 2020 Volkswagen Arteon Safety Technology Automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection The Arteon’s standard automatic emergency braking can spot cars and pedestrians that may be at risk of collision and alert the driver. If no action is taken, at certain speeds the system can slow and even stop the vehicle, lessening or avoiding altogether a potential accident. Adaptive cruise control with stop & go Standard on SEL and higher trims, the adaptive cruise control helps keep a safe distance between the Arteon and the traffic ahead. When engaged, the system will maintain a set distance of your choosing and slow the vehicle as the traffic ahead slows. The system can even bring the Arteon to a full stop then accelerate back to the set speed once the coast is clear. Lane–keeping assist Available only on the top-line SEL Premium R-Line, this system uses cameras to track the lane markings and warn the driver if the vehicle is drifting from its lane. It does this with both visual and audible warnings. At speeds over 40 mph, the system will even countersteer to help lessen the drift.

The French pharmaceutical giant Sanofi has rowed back on an apparent promise to prioritise the US market with any potential Covid-19 vaccine. Sanofi CEO Paul Hudson sparked a row by saying the US government had "the right to the largest pre-order because it's invested in taking the risk". French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe responded by saying access for all was "non-negotiable". Sanofi's chairman has now vowed equal access for everyone. "I am going to be extremely clear: there will be no particular advance for any country," Serge Weinberg told France 2 TV. He said Mr Hudson's words had been distorted. Prime Minister Philippe said he had spoken to Mr Weinberg and received "all the necessary assurance regarding the distribution of an eventual Sanofi vaccine". President Emmanuel Macron said that recent efforts had proved a vaccine should not be subject to market forces and he is due to meet top Sanofi officials next week. The EU insisted that all countries should get equal access to a vaccine. "The vaccine against Covid-19 should be a global public good and its access needs to be equitable and universal," said European Commission spokesman Stefan de Keersmaecker, quoted by AFP news agency. Why is the issue so delicate for Sanofi? The deadly coronavirus pandemic has made the search for a Covid-19 vaccine the top priority for labs worldwide, with intense pressure to speed up a process that usually take years to develop. Earlier this month the EU chaired a global online summit to boost coronavirus research, and secured pledges of $8bn (£6.5bn) from some 40 countries and donors. The funding is aimed at developing a coronavirus vaccine and treatments for Covid-19. The UK co-hosted the summit but the US and Russia did not take part. Sanofi's Covid-19 vaccine research is partly funded by the US Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (Barda) but in recent years Sanofi received tens of millions of euros in tax credits from the French government to help its research. Mr Hudson's remarks in a Bloomberg interview provoked uproar among politicians on the right and left in France. The Socialists estimated that Sanofi had received some €150m (£133m; $162m) in research tax credit and millions more in other tax credit. Sanofi's chief in France, Olivier Bogillot, said the goal was to have a vaccine "available to the US as well as France and Europe at the same time". But speaking on French news channel BFMTV, he said this would only be possible "if Europeans work as quickly as the Americans", and added that the US government had pledged to spend "several hundreds of millions of euros". The row was reminiscent of reports in March of a US attempt to buy German biotech firm CureVac, which has also been researching a possible vaccine. CureVac insisted there had been no US attempt to buy the firm or its manufacturing capacity. Last month Sanofi also teamed up with Britain's GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) to work on a vaccine, though trials have not yet started. Sanofi's head of vaccine research, John Shiver, says "we are using an existing technology that was designed for influenza, and we're applying it to the new virus that causes Covid-19 disease". Sanofi says GSK "will contribute its adjuvant technology, an ingredient added to enhance the immune response, reduce the amount of vaccine protein required per dose and improve the chances of delivering an effective vaccine that can be manufactured at scale". The candidate vaccine is expected to enter clinical trials in the second half of 2020 and to be available by the second half of 2021.

Pros All-new for 2021 Roomier, a bit longer Super Cruise availability Available diesel engine, air suspension Independent rear suspension Cons A bit longer than last year Platinum models now exceed $100K What’s New this Year? Everything: The Escalade is all-new for 2021 Roomier inside, with a huge OLED infotainment screen Independent rear suspension Available diesel engine Still available in regular and ESV lengths People Also Ask Is the new Escalade available with a diesel engine? It is. A 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline-6 is a no-cost option on the 2021 Cadillac Escalade. While EPA fuel economy hasn’t been announced yet, we expect the Escalade diesel to post highway mpg in the high 20s, if not 30 mpg or slightly higher. Is the diesel engine better for towing than the 6.2-liter V8? Not necessarily. While the diesel produces excellent low-end torque, the Escalade with the much larger 6.2-liter gasoline V8 has a slightly higher maximum-trailering capacity. The Escalade diesel has a max-towing capacity of 8,000 pounds, whereas the 6.2-liter Escalade can tow a max of 8,200 pounds. What is Super Cruise, and does the 2021 Cadillac Escalade have it? Optional on the new Escalade, Super Cruise is an almost fully autonomous driving system available as an option on the 2021 Cadillac Escalade. It goes beyond adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. On more than 200,000 miles of highways in Canada and the U.S., Super Cruise will steer, accelerate, and slow the Escalade as required by the road and conditions. Super Cruise now also allows automated lane changes via a tap of the turn-signal stalk as well. Where is the Cadillac Escalade built? Like its Chevy Suburban and GMC Yukon cousins, the 2021 Cadillac Escalade is built at GM’s massive assembly plant in Arlington, Texas. Overview Cadillac’s full-size 3-row luxury SUV has entered its fifth generation. This all-new 2021 Cadillac Escalade represents a huge technological leap over the current model, thanks to a new ladder frame with independent rear suspension and dramatically improved packaging that makes this luxurious family hauler much roomier inside, particularly in the second and third rows. Of note, the 2021 Cadillac Escalade comes with 2nd-row captain’s chairs standard, and a middle bench seat is a no-cost option. The standard Escalade has grown by about 7 inches, while the longer Escalade ESV is up by 2.5. The direct-injected 6.2-liter V8 is a carryover from last year, but the new Escalade now is available for the first time with a diesel engine. It’s the same smooth 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline-6 that gives the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups such outstanding fuel economy, and, like the gasoline V8, it mates to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel-drive (2WD) and 4-wheel-drive (4WD) Escalades continue to be available. The main competition for the new Cadillac Escalade (base price, $76,195) remains the Lincoln Navigator, which starts at $75,825. Another large and luxurious 3-row SUV to consider is the Escalade’s cousin, the GMC Yukon XL in opulent Denali form. It starts at $72,395. Driving the 2021 Cadillac Escalade KBB hasn’t had the chance to drive a 2021 Cadillac Escalade yet, and we’re especially eager to learn about the ride quality and handling delivered by the new independent rear suspension. Magnetic Ride Control – which has impressed us in the past by continually sensing road conditions and adjusting the suspension damping accordingly – is standard. Air suspension, which has automatic load-leveling and ride-height adjustments, can be ordered to complement the Magnetic Ride Control. Air suspension automatically lowers the Escalade at speed for better aerodynamics, and there’s a setting that lets the driver lower this big Cadillac SUV by two inches to ease passenger ingress and egress. With air suspension, the body also can be raised for extra clearance when you’re driving off the pavement. Favorite Features OLED INFOTAINMENT SCREEN The new Cadillac Escalade has a huge curved Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) infotainment screen with more than 38 diagonal inches of display area. It’s actually comprised of three digital panels. The 14.2-inch center panel contains the driver information center and the instrument cluster, while the much larger screen to the right shows audio, navigation, and phone info. The clarity and definition of this huge screen are nothing short of a sight to behold. NEW DIESEL ENGINE We’ve sampled this smooth new powerplant in the GMC Sierra pickup and came away impressed by more than its outstanding highway fuel economy. But remember that this 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline-6, a no-cost option, is a relatively small-displacement engine not designed to be the Escalade’s towing workhorse. While the diesel is able to tow nearly as well as the 6.2-liter V8, its calling card is relaxed low-end torque and impressive fuel efficiency. 2021 Cadillac Escalade Interior The independent rear suspension does more than improve the ride quality of the new Escalade. It takes up less space than the live-axle arrangement of the 2020 Cadillac Escalade, so GM engineers were able to lower both rows of rear seats and make the whole area in back feel much roomier. Real adults can now fit comfortably in the third row, thanks to 10 extra inches of legroom, and the cargo area is larger as well. In the standard-length Escalade, space behind the third row has grown to 25.5 cubic feet, up from 15.2. When you fold the third row, there’s 63 cubic feet of cargo room, up from 51.6. The longer 2021 Cadillac Escalade ESV, the one that’s the size of the Chevy Suburban, has even more space for passengers and gear. While base Escalades have leatherette seating, all higher trims get leather. And everywhere you look, luxury abounds. All models have 3-zone climate control and power fronts seats – 12-way for lower trims and 16-way for the top trims. The 16-way seats even have a massage function. Center-row captain’s chairs are standard; if you need seats for eight, a center bench is a no-cost option. The 2021 Escalade also has an available navigation system with augmented reality. As you approach required turns, live street views and an arrow are displayed on the OLED screen to provide added route clarity. 2021 Cadillac Escalade Exterior The 2021 Cadillac Escalade is unmistakably an Escalade, but it has been redesigned with vertical front lighting elements, horizontal headlights, and tall 3-dimensional taillights. There’s also a rear spoiler that hides the rear windshield wiper. Twenty-two-inch alloy wheels are standard, and they don’t look all that big on the bold new Escalade, which also will be available as a Sport for the first time. The Escalade Sport is distinguished by a black mesh grille and other black exterior trim elements. Similarly, the Luxury and Premium Escalades wear a bright Galvano trim, while the top-of-the-range Platinum models have their own distinctive interior and exterior details. 2021 Cadillac Escalade Standard Features The base 2021 Cadillac Escalade, called the Luxury, has 12-way power-adjustable leatherette seats, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, 3-zone climate control, a power liftgate, the nifty OLED information panel, and a 19-speaker audio system. It also has wireless smartphone charging and a trailering package. There’s a good safety suite, too, featuring automatic emergency braking. Like all 2021 Escalades, the Luxury can be ordered with the gasoline V8 or the turbodiesel inline-6. Bumping up the luxury quotient is the Escalade Premium Luxury model. It has a genuine leather interior and a panoramic sunroof, plus a head-up display and a rear camera mirror. A more thorough safety suite has lane-keeping assist and a blind-spot warning system, a technology that should be standard on vehicles at the Escalade’s price. For the record, Magnetic Ride Control is standard only on the Platinum, Platinum Luxury and Sport Escalades. Air suspension is standard only on the Platinum models (while being available as an option on the Premium Luxury and Sport). At the Platinum Luxury level, the 2021 Escalade becomes even more opulent. In addition to upgraded semi-aniline interior leather and massaging seats, it has a 36-speaker (!) AKG stereo and soft-close doors, adaptive cruise control, automatic reverse braking, an electronic limited-slip differential, and the aforementioned Magnetic Ride Control with Air Suspension. While the Escalade Sport has Mulan interior leather and a black mesh grille, the Escalade Platinum Sport model gets semi-aniline leather (in its first two rows) and massaging seats, along with Magnetic Ride Control, Air Suspension, and adaptive cruise control. 2021 Cadillac Escalade Options The new diesel engine is a no-cost option on all 2021 Cadillac Escalades. Four-wheel drive, also available on all new Escalades, is an extra $3,000. The Escalade Luxury, along with the Platinum Luxury and Platinum Sport models, are available with a power 2nd-row bench seat, and the latter two flagship models also can be ordered with Night Vision. Many more options are available on the Escalade Premium Luxury. In addition to a 36-speaker AKG audio system, soft-close doors, and an electronic limited-slip differential, options include Magnetic Ride Control, air suspension, Night Vision, Reverse Automatic Braking, and a more advanced level of adaptive cruise control Three major options packages are available: a $3,650 Driver Assist and Tech Package, a $2,700 Z66 Performance Package, and a $600 Heavy Duty Trailering Package. Notable stand-alone options on the 2021 Cadillac Escalade: Power-assist side steps: $1,750 Super Cruise: $2,500 36-speaker AKG stereo: $4,300 Night Vision: $2,000 Console cooler: $2,000 Rear-seat entertainment system: $1,995 22-inch polished multi-spoke alloy wheels with dark finish: $1,995 Crystal White Tricoat paint (and a few other colors): $1,225 2021 Cadillac Escalade Engines Two engines are available in the 2021 Cadillac Escalade. The first is the familiar 6.2-liter V8, a direct-injected aluminum-block engine that produces 420 horsepower and a healthy 460 lb-ft of torque. It’s a proven engine that works well in this big luxurious SUV, with fuel economy aided by automatic cylinder deactivation at light loads. New this year is a 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline-6. This engine, a no-cost option, produces 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque at a relaxed 1,500 rpm. EPA fuel economy of the new Escalade diesel has not been announced, but we suspect the highway figure may get as high as 30 mpg — meaning the Escalade diesel will be refreshingly efficient road-trip machine Note: The Escalade diesel has a DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) tank that occasionally needs to be refilled, typically at oil-change intervals. 6.2-liter V8 420 horsepower @ 5,600 rpm 460 lb-ft of torque @ 4,100 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 14/20 mpg (2WD), 14/19 mpg (4WD), 14/20 mpg (ESV 2WD), 14/19 mpg (ESV 4WD) 3.0-liter turbodiesel I6 277 horsepower @ 3,750 rpm 460 lb-ft of torque @ 1,500 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: N/A How Much Does the 2021 Cadillac Escalade Cost? In base 2WD Luxury form, the 2021 Cadillac Escalade has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) that starts at $76,195. If you want 4WD, that’s an extra $3,000, just like it is on every other trim level. The longer ESV model, like last year, also adds $3,000 to the price. The destination charge on these and all other Escalades is $1,295, and the new diesel is a no-cost option available on all models. The Premium Luxury Escalade, a good choice because it has real leather interior, lots more standard equipment, and a slew of available options. It starts at $82,995, while the Escalade Sport begins just a bit higher, at $85,595. The Premium Luxury Platinum and Sport Platinum Escalades up the content quotient even further and are priced accordingly, both at $99,995. With 4WD, they break the $100,000 barrier, both coming in at $102,995. Remember to add $3,000 if you want the longer Escalade ESV. The starting price of the 2021 Cadillac Escalade is close to that of the Lincoln Navigator, its primary competitor. Be sure to check the KBB.com Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area are paying for their 2021 Escalade. Traditionally, the Escalade’s resale values have lagged behind those of the Lincoln Navigator and Lexus LX. If an accident isn’t prevented altogether, the system will reduce its severity. The automatic braking works in Reverse, too. Lane-keeping assist The Escalade is a big vehicle that fills up its lane. With standard lane-keeping assist, this large Cadillac SUV will let its driver know when the Escalade is drifting out of its lane and then make gentle steering corrections (if necessary) to bring the vehicle back in line. Rear Camera Mirror With the Rear Camera Mirror, which is standard on all Escalades except the base model, you always have an unobstructed view of what’s behind the vehicle, even if you’ve loaded the cargo area up to the headliner with camping gear. While it takes a while to get used to the Rear Camera Mirror, the wide-angle view it provides is excellent.

The coronavirus "may never go away", the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned. Speaking at a briefing on Wednesday, WHO emergencies director Dr Mike Ryan warned against trying to predict when the virus would disappear. He added that even if a vaccine is found, controlling the virus will require a "massive effort". Almost 300,000 people worldwide are reported to have died with coronavirus, and more than 4.3m cases recorded. "It is important to put this on the table: this virus may become just another endemic virus in our communities, and this virus may never go away," Dr Ryan told the virtual press conference from Geneva. "HIV has not gone away - but we have come to terms with the virus." Dr Ryan then said he doesn't believe "anyone can predict when this disease will disappear". There are currently more than 100 potential vaccines in development - but Dr Ryan noted there are other illnesses, such as measles, that still haven't been eliminated despite there being vaccines for them. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stressed it was still possible to control the virus, with effort. "The trajectory is in our hands, and it's everybody's business, and we should all contribute to stop this pandemic," he said. WHO epidemiologist Maria van Kerkhove also told the briefing: "We need to get into the mindset that it is going to take some time to come out of this pandemic." LOCKDOWN UPDATE: What's changing, where? THE R NUMBER: What it means and why it matters GLOBAL SPREAD: Tracking the pandemic RECOVERY: How long does it take to get better? A SIMPLE GUIDE: What are the symptoms? Their stark remarks come as several countries began to gradually ease lockdown measures, and leaders consider the issue of how and when to reopen their economies. Dr Tedros warned that there was no guaranteed way of easing restrictions without triggering a second wave of infections. "Many countries would like to get out of the different measures," the WHO boss said. "But our recommendation is still the alert at any country should be at the highest level possible." Dr Ryan added: "There is some magical thinking going on that lockdowns work perfectly and that unlocking lockdowns will go great. Both are fraught with dangers."

Pros Standard active safety systems Towing capacity up to 3,500 pounds Optional 252-horsepower engine Standard Apple CarPlay/Android Auto Roomy rear seat Cons Less cargo room than Honda, Toyota and VW rivals No hybrid option What’s New this Year? Revised front and rear fascias Sporty RS trim added to lineup Button added to disable engine start/stop system People Also Ask Is the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox a good car? The Equinox falls in the middle of the compact SUV pack. It has less space and fewer standard features than rivals like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. Is the 4-cylinder 2022 Chevrolet Equinox underpowered? The standard 170-horsepower 1.5-liter is adequate for ordinary needs. If you want appreciable power, look to the optional 25742-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo-4. How much can the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox tow? With the standard 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, the Equinox is rated to tow 1,500 pounds. With the optional 2.0-liter, it can pull a more impressive 3,500 pounds. How well does the Chevrolet Equinox hold its value? The Equinox has only average resale value, trailing leaders like the Subaru Forester, Honda CR-V, and Toyota RAV4. Overview The 2022 Equinox is Chevrolet’s best-selling SUV and it’s a player in the 2-row/5-passenger compact crossover segment. It competes with a dozen other vehicles including the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Ford Escape. The Chevy Equinox has always been a good contender, if not the best in class. It has ample interior room, comfortable manners, and a handsome design. It has also been attractive thanks to a price that slightly undercuts competitors. The Equinox offers a choice of two turbocharged 4-cylinder engines, including one that makes 252 horsepower and that can tow 3,500 pounds – among the most in its class. Like its rivals, the Equinox includes a suite of active safety features such as automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assist, though you’ll still have to pay up to get adaptive cruise control. The Equinox has been refreshed for 2022 with restyled front and rear fascias and a sporty-looking RS trim. The update also remedies one of our former gripes with the Equinox: You can now disable the engine start/stop system with the touch of a button. Driving the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox Most Equinox models use a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. That might sound small, but it’s normal for modern smaller SUVs and doles out surprising power for its size. We’ve found its 170 horsepower and 203 lb-ft of torque do a decent job moving this SUV, and the engine pairs well with the standard 6-speed automatic transmission. More power can be had with the optional 2.0-liter turbo engine that brings a robust 252 horsepower/260 lb-ft of torque to the table. This out-muscles most competitor and provides quicker, more satisfying acceleration. It also enables the Equinox to tow up to 3,500 pounds – among the most for a small crossover SUV. This engine is connected to a fresher 9-speed automatic transmission. One suggestion if you choose 2.0-liter turbo: Get it with all-wheel drive (AWD). Otherwise, we’ve found that with front-wheel drive (FWD), it can suffer from torque steer – the sensation of the steering wheel tugging under hard acceleration. Regardless of powertrain, we’ve found the Equinox’s ride to be on the softer and more comfortable end of the spectrum. It’s not as athletic as a Mazda CX-5 or as adventurous as a Jeep Cherokee or Subaru Forester, but it makes a fine Goldilocks in everyday driving. With its update for 2022, Chevrolet has addressed a former complaint we had with the Equinox: You can now defeat the idle start/stop system with the press of a button. The defeat button sits on the center dash, to the left of switch for the hazard lights Favorite Features STANDARD SAFETY SYSTEMS Every new Chevrolet Equinox includes a suite of active safety features that includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and IntelliBeam automatic headlights. 2.0-LITER TURBO ENGINE This optional engine in the Equinox is among the most powerful in its class. With it, you’ll get quick acceleration and passing power, plus the ability to trailer up to 3,500 pounds. 2022 Chevrolet Equinox Interior The Chevrolet Equinox has a 2-row/5-passenger cabin that is useful and roomy. The driver and passenger seats are supportive and comfortable. A touchscreen display sits in the center of the dash. Controls for commonly used functions like climate and audio are simple to use. Cloth material has been the standard upholstery for Equinox models, with leather available for high-trim versions. The top-end Premier model is now fancier with French stitching. The new Equinox RS spices things up with black upholstery, red stitching, and an RS shift knob. The rear passenger section has good legroom and a reclining bench seat. Cargo space is good, but not best in class. Folding the rear seats down creates 63.9 cubic feet of storage. That compares to 75.8 in the Honda CR-V and 73.5 in the Volkswagen Tiguan. The VW Tiguan is also among the few small SUVs that offer a third row. 2022 Chevrolet Equinox Exterior With this year’s update, the Equinox gets new front and rear fascias. Up front, the grille has a wider and more aggressive design. In back, changes include new taillights. RS models stand out the most with a gloss black grille, dark 19-inch wheels, and blacked-out badging and other elements. Top-end Premier Equinox models have gloss-black chrome, LED headlights, and a logo projection on the power tailgate. Also new to the 2022 Equinox lineup are quad exhaust outlets for a sporty aesthetic. We think the updates keep the Equinox fresh while retaining a handsome design that should hold up well over the years. 2022 Chevrolet Equinox Standard Features The 2022 Chevy Equinox is available in five trims — L, LS, LT, RS, and Premier. The least expensive Equinox L includes a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, keyless entry, and push-button start, touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, four USB ports, 17-inch wheels, and the Teen Driver system that can set parameters and relay information on driving habits. Also standard is General Motors’ OnStar telematics system and subscription-based 4G LTE connectivity with Wi-Fi. Standard safety features include forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. 2022 Chevrolet Equinox Options Higher trims of the Equinox are more recommendable, as they offer po[CENSORED]r features and more amenities. Those include power driver’s seat, surround-view camera, leather interior, and a power liftgate. Adaptive cruise control can now be had beginning on the LT trim. Other safety features and driving aids include blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and parking sensors. Also available is GM’s nifty Safety Alert Seat, which vibrates the driver’s seat to get your attention, such as getting close to an object when backing up. A new option for the Premier trim is automatic parking assist, which can help with tasks like parallel parking. The new RS trim gets darkened exterior aesthetics and unique interior accents. Other options include amenities and features like heated seats, navigation, and premium audio. 2022 Chevrolet Equinox Engines Two turbocharged 4-cylinder engines are available in the 2022 Chevy Equinox. Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard and all-wheel drive (AWD) is optional for better traction with either engine. Standard is a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 170 horsepower and 203 lb-ft of torque. That’s adequate for most tasks and gives the Equinox a tow rating of 1,500 pounds. Optional on the LT, RS, and Premier trims is a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with 252 horsepower/260 lb-ft of torque that makes the Equinox quite a bit quicker and stronger. It is rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds. The 1.5-liter engine uses a 6-speed automatic transmission, while the 2.0-liter turbo has a 9-speed automatic. All Equinox models have an idle start/stop system that cuts engine power at idle, such as at stoplights. New for 2022 is the ability to disable start/stop with the touch of a button. 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 170 horsepower @ 5,600 rpm 203 lb-ft of torque @ 2,000-4,000 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: N/A 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 252 horsepower @ 5,500 rpm 260 lb-ft of torque @ 2,500-4,500 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: N/A How Much Does the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox Cost? We expect the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox to carry a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) around $25,000 or less, similar to the 2021 model. Exact pricing will be announced closer to the on-sale date in the third quarter of 2021. We expect a loaded 2022 Equinox to top $40,000. The Equinox has traditionally slightly undercut the prices of rivals like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V, and has been in line with others such as the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson. The top US infectious diseases doctor has warned senators the virus will spread if the country opens up too soon. Dr Anthony Fauci said if federal guidelines to reopen are not followed, "little spikes" will become outbreaks. He also said the real US death toll is probably higher than the official figure of 80,000. His message is at odds with the upbeat tone of President Trump who is keen to get the economy going again. Dr Fauci was speaking via video to a Republican-led committee of the US Senate. He was referring to the White House's Opening Up America Again plan, which includes three 14-day phases that states are urged to consider implementing as they allow schools and businesses to reopen. Several US states already restarting their economies have infection rates that are rising, not falling. He warned of the risk of triggering an outbreak that officials would not be able to control, adding that such an outbreak would set back economic recovery and could lead to "suffering and death". Although the White House has laid out guidelines for reopening, it is ultimately up to state governors to make the decisions on how to ease the lockdown. "There is no doubt, even under the best of circumstances, when you pull back on mitigation you will see some cases appear," Dr Fauci warned the US officials. 'Cautiously optimistic' Questioned about the possibility of a rebound in autumn of the virus, Dr Fauci said one is "entirely conceivable and possible". "I hope that if we do have the threat of a second wave we will be able to deal with it very effectively to prevent it becoming an outbreak." Dr Fauci also said there are multiple vaccines in development but "no guarantee" any will be effective, though based on his knowledge of other viruses, he is "cautiously optimistic". "We have many candidates and hope to have multiple winners," he said. "In other words it's multiple shots on goal." Witnesses testify remotely Witnesses appeared remotely during the over three-hour long hearing, as did some senators on the Senate Committee on Health, Education Labor and Pensions. The three members of the White House coronavirus task force who testified are self-isolating after possible exposure to the illness, including Dr Fauci. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director Dr Robert Redfield and Food and Drug Administration commissioner Stephen Hahn are also self-isolating. Dr Fauci has tested negative but will continue to work from home for the time being, and will be regularly tested. The hearing was led by Republican Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander from his home in the Smoky Mountains. His dog Rufus was occasionally seen slumbering in the background of the video conference call. "Staying at home indefinitely is not a solution to this pandemic," said Mr Alexander, adding: "There is not enough money available to help all of those hurt by a closed economy." Washington Senator Patty Murray, the highest-ranking Democrat on the committee, charged that Mr Trump is more interested in "fighting against the truth than fighting the virus". The government cannot ask people to restart their lives "if there isn't clear detailed guidance on how to do that safely", she adds. Media captionThe lost six weeks when the US failed to control the virus Meanwhile, Vice-President Mike Pence is also keeping his distance from the president after his press secretary Katie Miller tested positive last week. "The vice-president has made the choice to keep his distance for a few days," said White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany. Anthony Fauci's testimony before a congressional committee started as a genteel affair, with senators treating him as a long-serving public health official whose advice carries considerable authority and expertise. Then Senator Rand Paul spoke. When it comes to the coronavirus, the Republican from Kentucky said, public heath experts had made "wrong prediction after wrong prediction after wrong prediction". "As much as I respect you, Dr Fauci," he continued, "I don't think you're the end-all, I don't think you're the one person that gets to make a decision." Mr Paul went on to assert that "outside of New England", the virus has followed a "relatively benign course". He told Fauci that schools, which have been closed across the US since mid-March, should be reopened as soon as possible. Mr Paul was giving voice to a growing sentiment among the conservative base that Dr Fauci does not have the nation's - or the president's - best interests in mind. Crowds of anti-lockdown activists in several states have chanted "fire Fauci", and the director has required special protection after receiving death threats. They, like Mr Paul, have dismissed the spread of the virus beyond the current coastal hotspots, even though data indicates cases are spiking in some areas in the interior of the US. It's evidence of a growing political divide within the nation over how to respond to the virus and how, and when, to begin easing from existing state-ordered mitigation efforts. Dr Fauci, for his part, responded coolly. "I have never made myself out to be the end-all and only voice of this," he told Mr Paul. "I'm a scientist, a physician, and a public health official." He added that there is still much that is not known about the virus, and warned not to be "cavalier" about the threat to children, given new evidence that they may not be "completely immune to the deleterious effects" of the virus. Dr Paul, a practising physician, was himself diagnosed with the coronavirus last month and received significant criticism for continuing to work in the Senate after being exposed but before he received his positive diagnosis. Some US states are beginning to lift lockdown orders. Georgia, Oklahoma, Alaska and South Carolina have already allowed some businesses to reopen and have issued plans that call for more rules to be relaxed. Tuesday's hearing was Dr Fauci's first appearance before lawmakers since President Donald Trump declared a state of national emergency in March. The senior health adviser - who has become the public face of the fight against the virus in the US - was blocked from testifying to a Democratic-led House committee examining the Trump administration's response to the pandemic on May 6. What's the situation like in the US? The United States alone has more than 1.3 million confirmed cases, according to the Johns Hopkins University coronavirus tracker - almost six times as many as any other country. President Trump claimed that the US had "prevailed" in testing people for coronavirus infections in a news conference on Monday. But as of this week, the US has tested only 2.75% of its 330m po[CENSORED]tion, and no state has tested 10% of residents. In a separate development, White House staff have been ordered to wear masks when entering the West Wing after two aides tested positive for coronavirus. Mr Trump said he did not need to follow the directive as he kept "far away from everyone".

White House staff have been ordered to wear masks when entering the West Wing after two aides tested positive for coronavirus. The White House personnel office has said that staff must cover their faces at all times except when seated at their desks, socially distant from colleagues. The directive comes after an aide for Vice-President Mike Pence and a valet for President Trump fell ill. Mr Trump said he required the policy. Appearing without a mask in the Rose Garden for a press briefing on Monday, however, the president claimed he did not need to follow the directive because he kept "far away from everyone", and played down the White House infections. "We have hundreds of people a day pouring into the White House" each day, he said. "I think we're doing a good job containing it." Three members of the White House coronavirus task force went into self-isolation for two weeks after possible exposure to the illness. They include Dr Anthony Fauci, who has become the public face of the fight against the virus in the US. Mr Pence's press secretary Katie Miller, the wife of Trump aide Stephen Miller, tested positive for the virus on Friday. Her diagnosis came after a valet for US President Donald Trump was also confirmed to have the illness. Mr Trump shrugged of the White House spread, saying it was "basically one person" who had contracted the virus and that people who were in contact had since tested negative. What else did President Trump say? Mr Trump said more funds would be made available to increase testing in states. The government is to provide $11bn (£8.9bn) to states to meet testing goals this month. States were asked how many tests they hope to conduct in May, and will be given supplies to match the targets. Senior White House officials who come into regular contact with Mr Trump are currently being tested daily for the coronavirus. Pressed by journalists on when all Americans could expect to have access to testing, Mr Trump said: "If someone wants to be tested right now they will be able to be tested". The claim is heavily disputed. Donald Trump held his press conference to talk about the growing number of coronavirus tests available to Americans, but it was the impact of the pandemic on the White House itself that became the focus of attention. At an event held in the Rose Garden last week, none of the attendees, including Vice-President Mike Pence, wore masks. Four days later, Pence - regularly at the president's side - was notably absent, his press secretary having tested positive for the virus days ago. Everyone in attendance, including presidential son-in-law Jared Kushner, had masks, after a directive requiring them for all White House staff. It was an order that applied to everyone - that is, except the president, who continued to decline the protection. This made for a striking contrast, as Trump spoke of the "pent-up demand" and "enthusiasm" in the US for reopening businesses and easing government-ordered social distance restrictions, while denying that the system that protects White House personnel from infection had broken down. "We have a lot of people coming in and out," he said. "We are running a country." It underlines a fundamental challenge facing the US in the days ahead. Can the US economy reopen and recover when even the White House isn't safe? What's going on with testing? For weeks, Mr Trump has sought to encourage an easing of lockdown measures throughout the US, arguing it was time to get back to work amid dire economic news. However, public health experts have warned that easing restrictions too early could lead to a resurgence of transmissions and a second coronavirus wave. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had issued guidelines suggesting that lockdowns should not be eased unless a region has seen 14 days of declines in infections and be able to conduct 30 tests for every thousand residents. According to the CovidTracking Project, a charity, they US conducted an average of 248,000 daily tests in the first week of May. According to the White House, the number has increased to 300,000 a day, but prominent public health researchers say at least 900,000 daily tests are needed before the US should reopen. As of this week, the US has tested only 2.75% of its 330 million po[CENSORED]tion, and no state has tested 10% of residents. In over a dozen states where lockdown measures have been relaxed, including Texas, South Carolina and Arizona, less than 2% of residents have been tested. Last week, the White House rejected the CDC's reopening guidance, but some states are adopting the standards.
