Lewis Hamilton agrees contract extension that will keep him with Mercedes until 2023 as seven-time world champion commits to F1's new era; Hamilton will be 38 by the end of his new deal, which takes him into 17th season in F1; But who will be his team-mate? Lewis Hamilton has signed a new two-year contract with Mercedes that will keep him with the team until the end of the 2023 season. The deal extends Hamilton's nine-year stay and will take the seven-time world champion and Mercedes, Formula 1's most successful driver-team combination, into the sport's much-changed new era from 2022. It also means Hamilton is committed to F1 until at least the age of 38, with 2023 set to be his 17th season. "It is hard to believe it's been nearly nine years working with this incredible team and I'm excited we're going to continue our partnership for two more years," said Hamilton, who has won six of his seven titles with Mercedes. "We've accomplished so much together but we still have a lot to achieve, both on and off the track." Hamilton's previous contract, while only signed in February, was only for one year. He is currently 18 points Max Verstappen in a hotly-contested championship battle between Mercedes and Red Bull. "As we enter a new era of F1 from 2022 onwards, there can be no better driver to have in our team than Lewis," said team boss Toto Wolff. "His achievements in this sport speak for themselves, and with his experience, speed and race-craft, he is at the peak of his powers. The Formula 1 race calendar for 2021 "We are relishing the battle we have on our hands this year - and that's why we also wanted to agree this contract early, so we have no distractions from the competition on track. "I have always said that as long as Lewis still possesses the fire for racing, he can continue as long as he wants." Just like his last deal, Hamilton cited Mercedes' work in helping improve diversity in F1 as a key factor. "I'm incredibly proud and grateful of how Mercedes has supported me in my drive to improve diversity and equality in our sport," added the Englishman, 36. "They have held themselves accountable and made important strides in creating a more diverse team and inclusive environment. "Thank you to all the dedicated and talented individuals at Mercedes whose hard work makes it all possible and the Board for their continued trust in me. We're entering a new era of car which will be challenging and exciting and I can't wait to see what else we can achieve together." F1 boss Stefano Domenicali also praised the news, hailing Hamilton as a "global superstar". "This is fantastic news for Formula 1 and I am delighted that Lewis will stay In F1 for at least another two years," he stated. "What he has achieved in this sport is incredible and I know he has more to come. He is a global superstar on and off the race track and his positive impact on Formula 1 is huge." Hamilton & Mercedes: F1's record-breaking force continues While there have been talks about switching teams in the past, and hints about a possible early retirement, Hamilton extending his Mercedes stay is one of F1's biggest no-brainers. Since Hamilton made the then-controversial decision to leave McLaren for Mercedes for the 2013 season, driver and team have embarked on a record-breaking charge that nobody could have predicted. Making the most of a package that dominated as soon as the hybrid era began in 2014, Hamilton quickly added to his 2008 title, winning the Drivers' Championship in six of the next seven seasons - with Nico Rosberg's narrow 2016 triumph the Englishman's only blemish. Hamilton has also collected an astounding 77 of his record-setting 98 F1 wins with Mercedes. In fact, one of the only records Hamilton is left to pursue is the outright championship tally - he is currently tied on seven titles with Michael Schumacher. He may be up against it to break that record this year, with Verstappen and Red Bull certainly a force to be reckoned with, but the new contract gives Hamilton at least two more seasons, if necessary, to achieve that goal. Hamilton has spoken excitedly about the challenge of F1's new era from 2022, as the sport prepares for a huge rules reset and dramatically different cars, which should aid overtaking and excitement. The pecking order could be reset, although Mercedes - like many other teams - have already shifted much of their focus to next year's cars. Hamilton's future is now assured, but who he will be partnering at Mercedes is far from certain. Valtteri Bottas has been Hamilton's team-mate since 2017, and the pair have certainly enjoyed a more harmonious relationship than Hamilton did with Rosberg previously. But Bottas, while helping Mercedes continue their constructors' title streak, has also failed to provide quite the challenge to Hamilton as his predecessor managed. The Finnish driver has been on one-year deals for much of his Mercedes stay and that is also the case in 2021, with his contract once again expiring at the end of the season.

PayPal-owned payments app Venmo is set to allow users to sell products and services using their personal accounts, albeit for a fee. Previously, Venmo users weren’t allowed to receive funds for business transactions via their personal profiles. Anyone found to have been flouting the rules risked having their account suspended. Now though, Venmo is preparing to relax its rules having issued a letter informing users of its updated terms of service, which are due to take effect from July 20. Check out the best money transfer apps and services These are the best payment gateways around Have a look at the best credit card processing service The move will mean that users who don’t necessarily want or need to have a business profile will be legitimately able to accept payments for goods and services. Venmo will subsequently charge them 1.9% of the transaction value plus a $0.10 fee, which is the same as customers who use a business profile to process transactions. Venmo payments PayPal has been trying to find ways to improve profits from Venmo, particularly given its large collection of users. There has already been a Venmo-branded credit card, which attracted interest because of its integrated QR code that allowed users to carry out practical tasks like splitting the cost of a meal. The company has also been offering cashback via a flexible rewards program. Venmo has been gaining traction since the pandemic too, with new services supplementing its user-friendly appeal, including an option allowing the direct deposit of stimulus checks into Venmo user accounts. PayPal has previously reported that the number of people using Venmo has grown substantially, up 32% in 2020 to reach almost 70 million active accounts. Money transfers have been a big part of the appeal, with around $51 billion moved using Venmo in the first quarter, which shows an increase of 63% on the year before. The company is expecting nearly $900 million in revenue for 2021. However, while the news appears to have been positively received, there is some confusion from users about precisely how the fees will be attached to the correct transactions. Venmo plans to let users have the option of toggling its interface from within the app, in order to identify which payments are destined for goods or services. hese will also be covered by the app's purchase protection plan meaning customers will have back-up if a transaction isn't what it should be, or if goods don’t arrive as described. Meanwhile, transaction fees are simply deducted automatically from money that has been sent. We've also highlighted the best mobile credit card processors Via WSJ

During the ISC High Performance 2021 seminar, it was revealed that not only are AMD's EPYC CPUs powering more of the top 10 supercomputers than Intel's Xeon chips but are also the leading in the energy efficiency charts. AMD EPYC CPUs Power More Top 10 Performance & Energy Efficiency Supercomputers Than Intel's Xeon Chips According to the TOP500 and Green500 charts, out of the top 10 positions, AMD is powering three supercomputers which include Perlmutter (NERSC Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory), Selene (NVIDIA Corporation), and JUWELS Booster Module (Forschungzentrum Julich FZH). All three of the supercomputers mentioned are powered by AMD's EPYC processors and based on various designs from HPE, BullSequana, and DGX. All of these supercomputers combined have a peak processing output of 172.2 PetaFlops which is expected to expand further in the coming years as deployment of more chips continues. Moving on to the top 10 Most Energy Efficient supercomputers, here AMD takes 8 spots while Intel takes the two spots including the top position. The Rmax/Power output of AMD's EPYC based Hiper Gator AI system is very close to Intel's MN-3 solution at 29.5 Rmax/Power versus 29.7 Rmax/Power. The accelerator used for the MN-3 is also MN-core while the rest of the systems in the list rely on NVIDIA's A100 accelerators. In another chart, it is shown that while Intel CPUs still powers more servers than AMD, its numbers have declined since the previous charts. NVIDIA's share has seen dramatic growth with a 46% hold in the server HPC segment while Intel has fallen down from 54% to 51%. This just goes off to show the tremendous feats that AMD has accomplished in the HPC efficiency and performance categories since it launched EPYC. NVIDIA should also be applauded for its GPU architectures which seem to be the go-to choice for several high-performance computing vendors. Intel on the other hand has two supercomputers that are powered by its Xeon chips, the Dammam-7 for Saudi Aramco and HPC5 for Eni S.p.A. These two systems have a combined horsepower of up to 57.9 PetaFlops which is nothing in comparison to AMD's total supercomputing power in the top 10 but Intel does have more systems deployed overall in the Top500 category. Interestingly all AMD EPYC and Intel Xeon-based supercomputers feature NVIDIA Ampere A100 and Volta V100 GPUs.

When the TV show based on Halo was first announced, Kyle Killen was attached as its showrunner (Killen previously worked on one-series wonders Lone Star, Awake, and Mind Games). Killen apparently stepped down and Steven Kane (whose production credits include American Dad! and The Last Ship) took over as showrunner. According to Variety, even if Halo is picked up for a second season, Kane won't be sticking around. He'll be leaving Budapest, where Halo is being filmed, to return home to the United States. While initially announced as a Showtime project, the Halo series will debut on Paramount+. Pablo Schreiber from The Wire and Orange is the New Black has been cast as Master Chief, and Jen Taylor, who voiced Cortana in the games, will reprise her role. Natascha McElhone will play Dr. Catherine Halsey, with Shabana Azmi as Admiral Margaret Parangosky and Bokeem Woodbine as a privateer and old friend of Master Chief's named Soren-006. As for what it's about, the Halo TV show will be a new story rather than a direct adaptation of any of the games or novels, although back in 2018 Showtime's president of programming Gary Levine described it as being "incredibly respectful of the canon". Halo is currently scheduled to release early in 2022 on Paramount+. Jody is that guy who will try to convince you to play some indie game you've never heard of with a name like Extreme Meatpunks Forever. He is also on a doomed quest to play every Warhammer game.

Back in April, a mysterious liquid-cooled variant of the AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT LC popped up on Chinese new networks. Now, this model has appeared within a custom PC put together by a local Chinese builder, confirming its existence. AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT LC 'Liquid Cooled' Graphics Card Is Real & Is Being Sold in Chinese-Assembled Custom PCs Spotted by Harukaze, the AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT LC 'Liquid Cooled' is what the name says, a liquid-cooled version of the Radeon RX 6900 XT graphics card. There are no details mentioned within the product listing but previous rumors have indicated that the card could be using the RDNA 2 based Navi 21 XTXH GPU. The AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT with Navi 21 XTXH chips have received high-end cooling systems, both air, and liquid from various manufacturers. AMD has also followed the liquid approach. It helps in pushing peak clocks out of the binned Navi 21 chip and as such, delivers slightly more performance than the reference variant. The card follows the same design scheme as the existing Radeon RX 6000 RDNA 2 series graphics cards with a silver and black color scheme. The card has two glossy aluminum plates and a large Radeon 'R' logo in the middle. The card would have featured a dual-slot design and came with an AIO liquid cooling solution. The packaging shows the card featuring a 120mm AIO radiator and has an RGB accent LED on the side. The card features the reference PCB design with dual 8-pin power connectors. The system it's packed within offers an AMD Ryzen 9 5950X CPU, ASUS ROG STRIX B550-A board, 16 GB of DDR4-3200 Memory, a 500 GB NVMe SSD, and DeepCool's Castle 240 V2 liquid cooler. Power is provided through an 850W DeepCool PSU. The system is listed for a price of 20,999 RMB which converts to around 3300 USD. That's pretty decent if we consider that the Ryzen 9 5950X has an MSRP of $799 US and the RX 6900 XT LC should come at a slight premium over the reference MSRP of $999 US (let's say $1199 US). That's $2500 US for those two components alone. Now we should also add in an extra $600-$700 for the PSU, cooler, memory, and board. The casing and SSD prices are not included. The AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT LC has so far only appeared on Chinese retailers and news sites and that could mean that the card might be exclusive to the Asian Pacific market however, that remains to be seen. AMD definitely can't miss the opportunity to launch an enthusiast-grade graphics card in other markets. The AMD Radeon RX 6900 XTX Liquid Cooled graphics card would've come packed with the Navi 21 XTX GPU which is the fully enabled die featuring 80 Compute Units or 5120 SPs. The card will also feature 16 GB of GDDR6 memory across a 256-bit bus interface, a 512 GB/s total bandwidth, and clock speeds of 2015 MHz base and 2250 MHz boost at reference specs. There are also 80 Ray accelerators for ray-tracing enablement on the graphics cards (one RA per Compute Unit). The graphics card will feature a TBP of 300W. In addition to the standard memory, the Radeon RX 6900 XTX Liquid-cooled graphics card would also have featured 128 MB of Infinity Cache on the GPU die. The cache will help boost bandwidth for higher performance at resolutions beyond 1080p HD. The 128 MB Infinity Cache boosts the standard 512 GB/s bandwidth by 3.25x, delivering an effective bandwidth of up to 1.664 TB/s across all Big Navi GPU-based graphics cards. The reference AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT had a price of $999 US so the Radeon RX 6900 XTX Liquid-cooled would have sold for over $1200 US due to its premium design.

We're in a new month, which means a new Rust update. There's some pretty interesting stuff going on with Rust's June update, but maybe the weirdest is the Rust+ app now supports IFTTT—which means you can essentially wire up the brutal survival game to some real-life services, apps, and smart home devices. IFTTT (If This, Then That) is a software platform that connects different apps, devices, and systems to one another. For instance, an IFTTT applet might let you automatically add a song to your Spotify playlist whenever you give a thumbs-up to a song on YouTube. Or, you can use it to send you a text when your weather app notices it's going to rain. Shit like that. If there are two things that both support IFTTT, they can be connected to each other to perform some bit of automation. With the Rust+ app you can already keep tabs on your Rust server when you're not actually playing, but now that it supports IFTTT you can integrate the app with other apps and devices. Want an alarm to go off or your lights at home to blink when someone is raiding your base? Want to automatically send a tweet when you've been killed in Rust so your followers know who did it? Want to order something vaguely resembling pizza from Dominos by pushing a button in the game? You can now do all those fairly ridiculous things, provided everything involved supports IFTTT. For the average Rust player, however, there are some more grounded changes in the June update. A new contact list system will help you keep better track of the other players you encounter, let you flag them as friendly or unfriendly, and even place a mark above their heads (while looking at them through binoculars) that shows if they've previously been mean to you. It's part of a "rudimentary reputation system" that's being worked on, to make it easier for friendly players to spot the players who tend to indiscriminately kill on sight. "As for the majority of hardcore rust players who kill everyone on sight anyway, you may as well pretend this system does not exist as it will not affect you," reads the devblog post. "However, for those less inclined to destroy and kill every living thing that passes in front of them, this system might help you find some like-minded players to team up with!" Yeah, maybe. The June update also gives animals a nice makeover, with new models, nicer fur, and removes some animals' "redundant bones" for less of a performance hit. I feel bad they lost bones, but the animals definitely do look a lot nicer now. Just look at that big ol' bear! What else? If you like making cinematic videos of your Rust exploits, some more advanced features have been added to the demo system, including a scrubbable timeline and a shot manager. "You can now create and manage 'shots' within demos, which are individual recordings of camera motion as well as properties such as FOV and DOF. These shots can then be played back in-sync with the demo scene." There are some quality of life improvements too, like the ability to color code your wires and hoses, an AI overhaul to go along with the fancy new animals, procedural generation tweaks, and a few other odds and ends. No new Twitch drops this month, however, though they'll resume in July.

While a fix emerged three weeks ago for the WebKit security bug affecting Apple products such as iPhone and Mac, Apple has yet to implement the fix. Researchers at the security firm Theori have found that WebKit mainly causes Safari to crash. However, following a re-check after the supplied fix, they discovered that the bug still remains on both iOS and MacOS. "Patch-gapping" is the term for the time period between when a fix becomes available and the application of that fix to affected systems and products. In this case, Theori cautions Apple about waiting too long to make use of the fix for WebKit, lest attackers have more time and opportunity to compromise impacted systems. This vulnerability arose from WebKit which is a confusion bug taking advantage of AudioWorklet, the interface allowing developers to alter, control, render and play audio with the lowest possible latency. Unfortunately, attackers can exploit the WebKit bug to remotely execute evil code on affected devices. That said, attackers using WebKit would still have to circumvent Pointer Authentication Codes (PAC), an exploit mitigation system wherein users must input the correct cryptographic signature before code can be rendered in memory. That means that in the absence of either this signature or some kind of a bypass, attackers will fortunately not be able to run their malicious code. Researchers have confirmed that this exploit builds arbitrary read/write primitives which attackers could use to build a chain of further exploits. Moreover, they stated that PAC bypass methods count as a distinct issue that should be disclosed separately. Thus far, WebKit has appeared in six of the eight Apple exploits already uncovered in 2021 alone.

AMD's next-generation Ryzen Threadripper HEDT CPUs based on the Zen 3 core architecture are expected to launch in August following with retail availability in September according to a rumor. AMD Ryzen Threadripper 'Chagal' HEDT CPUs With Powerful Zen 3 Cores To Launch in August, Retail Availability in September A few months back, it was reported that AMD's 4th Gen Ryzen Threadripper 'Chagal' HEDT CPUs were going to launch in August. Now a brand new rumor has emerged from a forum member at ServerTheHome who states that we are indeed looking at a launch of Zen 3 powered Threadripper CPUs in August. As per the rumor, the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 'Chagal' HEDT CPUs powered by Zen 3 cores will be launching in August 2021 but retail availability is planned for a month later in September 2021. This rumor also states that the lineup will start at 16 cores. AMD didn't offer any 16 core processor in its 3rd Gen Threadripper lineup based on the Zen 2 core architecture. The company already has Ryzen 9 5950X serving as the 16 core flagship on the mainstream AM4 platform but it looks like a cheaper solution with several PCIe Gen 4 lanes and huge amounts of cache will make sense on the high-end platform as well. The 4th Gen Ryzen Threadripper chips will be compatible with existing TRX40 motherboards but a new BIOS update will be required. It is expected that motherboard manufacturers will be releasing the necessary BIOS right before launch. As for what the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 5000 HEDT Desktop CPUs bring to the table, one of the major changes will be the Zen 3 core architecture itself which will drive a 19% IPC uplift over the existing Zen 2 based Threadripper 3000 lineup. The Ryzen Threadripper 5000 CPUs, codenamed, Chagall, will retain 64 cores and 128 threads. The CPUs will offer higher clock speeds, rearranged cache (L3), and will feature a slightly refined 7nm process node from TSMC to offer better overall efficiency. The AMD Ryzen Threadripper & Threadripper PRO lineups are currently the undisputed champions of the high-end desktop and workstation segment. Intel currently has no proper competition with their last release, the 10th Gen Core-X family launching all the way back in 2019. AMD has since just dominated the landscape and will continue to do so until Intel refocuses its HEDT and workstation efforts with Emerald Rapids HEDT CPUs which are expected for launch sometime between 2021 & 2022.

Sony debuted 14 minutes of Horizon Forbidden West gameplay in its State of Play presentation today, which you can watch above. Forbidden West has not been announced for PC, but we have good reason to believe it'll eventually land on our favorite platform. Horizon: Zero Dawn was a former PlayStation exclusive that hit PC three years after its console debut, and performed admirably. According to a Sony Investor presentation, the Horizon PC port gave the company a 250% return on its investment, which is to say it gave Sony a very good reason to do it all again. And again it did with Days Gone, which had its own successful PC debut a few weeks ago. We're also getting a PC version of Uncharted 4, according to the same investor presentation, which is basically like Nintendo announcing Mario's coming to the damn computer. We feel pretty confident assuming that the sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn will also come to PC one day, though probably years after it hits the PlayStation 5 sometime in 2021 . The State of Play debuted 14 minutes of gameplay, and it looks pretty nice. I'm getting flashbacks to those old Crysis vegetation tech demos with how lush Forbidden West looks. The leaves are both green and numerous. We also got a quick survey of some additions and changes to how Horizon plays. Mounted combat looks like a big deal, with enemies now riding machines, from little robo dinos to massive robo mammoths. It looks like climbing and combat are more closely integrated, with Aloy popping off arrows while scrambling up walls. There's a glider now too, because every game needs a glider in this post Breath of the Wild world. Underwater navigation looks like a marquee feature, both as part of your usual open world exploration and for stealthy combat purposes. We'll get some combat additions, as expected, like special moves and new gadgets. My favorite's the goop launcher. Aloy fires off a nasty pod at the mammoth and it explodes, gumming up the works. Overall it looks like a safe sequel, expanding in natural ways without totally redesigning the original Horizon. I'm looking forward to playing it with mouse-aim, hopefully sometime before I turn 40.

During its Build developers conference this year, Microsoft announced its first features for a product fueled by GPT-3, the natural language model from OpenAI developed to assist users in building applications without any programming knowledge. GPT-3 will come into play through Microsoft Power Apps, the low code app development platform that a helps a wide range of folks from those with no programming experienced to those considered experienced developers. So far, this platform has aided in the development of apps for travel during COVID-19, review of nonprofit gift donation and decreasing the amount of overtime needed for wind turbine maintenance. For example, the AI-powered platform will allow users to search for e-commerce products with a query such as "Find products where the name starts with 'kids,'" similar to SQL. An efficient GPT-3 model will then convert that query as a formula into the open source Power Platform language, Microsoft Power Fx. Microsoft claims that this new platform solution will greatly benefit enterprises by using its new managed endpoints capability to solve real-world business problems, backed by familiar components such as Microsoft Azure for operation and Azure Machine Learning as a power source. Overall, this platform will count as the first in a collaboration between Microsoft Azure and OpenAI, setting the stage for even more advanced products such as the planned Azure supercomputer that in itself should be able to shoulder the burden of testing newer AI models. All of that said, just because users will be able to avoid actual programming languages when querying with this new GPT-3 implementation, those users should still be familiar with basic writing formulas often used in Microsoft Excel and Fx. While the end goal remains the eventual development of a platform requiring no code at all when building queries, many users have already taken to GPT-3 capabilities via last year's Azure-powered API release to create works of poetry, write tweets, answer trivia questions and summarize emails. At the end of the day, Microsoft intends to keep the end user in mind, meaning a mission of not only making this platform as accessible to the lay person as possible, but also to ensure that humans remain in the loop as far as its progress and development, regardless of coding knowledge. These new GPT-3 features will release in English in preview mode by the end of June.

Another day, another leak by Videocardz. The box art and graphics card design for MSI's upcoming RTX 3070 Ti SUPRIM X and VENTUS 3X has leaked out. A lot of the specifications and details had already been leaked previously through a Micron document but they have now been more or less confirmed thanks to WhyCry. MSI is looking to launch two variants of the RTX 3070 Ti: SUPRIM X and Ventus 3X. Both will have roughly the same design as the RTX 3070 in terms of aesthetics and feature the G104-400 GPU wigh 6144 CUDA cores. The GPU will be mated to 8GB of GDDR6X memory (the non-Ti variant only supports GDDR6).As far as other differences go, the Ventus 3X will have a clock speed of 1800 MHz and a TDP of 290W. The card will be powered by dual 8-pin connectors. Videocardz has also previously leaked the product information page of MSI's SUPRIM series and it ended the memory debate once and for all. The RTX 3080 Ti constitutes a significant upgrade over the RTX 3080 (it is basically a slighlty cut RTX 3090) at 10240 cores. The RTX 3070 Ti on the other hand, offers a slight upgrade over the RTX 3070. The NVIDIA RTX 3070 Ti will be based on the GA104-400 GPU and have 6144 CUDA cores divided into 48 GPU clusters. This means it has exactly 2 more clusters than its non-Ti variant and 20 less than the RTX 3080. It will feature 48 RT cores (cor comparison the RTX 3080 has 68) which is also 2 more than the RTX 3070 and 20 less than the RTX 3080. ROPs will be 96 for this segment of NVIDIA's lineup and the clock speed is yet to be confirmed. It will feature a 256-bit memory bus with 8 GB or 16 GB GDDR6X memory clocked at 19 Gbps. It is currently scheduled for release in May 2021 alongside the RTX 3080 Ti but this could change considering the volatile supply situation. Interestingly, the RTX 3070 Ti is positioned as something of a replacement of the RTX 3070 because it's not *that* powerful compared to its namesake. With just a difference of 2 GPU clusters, there's only so much performance to be gained. The RTX 3080 Ti on the other hand rocks a massive difference when compared to its namesake. The RTX 3080 Ti has 12 more GPU clusters compared to the RTX 3080 for a total of 10240 cores (2 less than the RTX 3090). It has 80 RT cores and 112 ROPs. It will be coupled with a 12 GB GDDR6X vRAM buffer and a 384-bit bus for a total of 912 GB/s. It is clearly a monster of a card and from the specifications, it appears to be a very slightly, less-powerful, replacement of the RTX 3090 and the true flagship of NVIDIA's ampere lineup. Both of these graphic cards are currently expected to be announced on May 31 with a launch expected by 10th June. It would also be very interesting to see how much NVIDIA cripples mining performance on these cards. If they manage to cripple it to a large enough extent, we might just see these cards available for close to MSRP from AIB and retail partners although I wouldn't hold my breath about it.

Activision has made some notable moves in its effort to combat toxicity in Call of Duty: Warzone and other games in the series, including the implementation of filters to catch potentially offensive player names, clan tags, and text chat, and bans of more than 350,000 Call of Duty accounts for "for racist names or toxic behavior" over the past year. There's more to come: In an update posted today, Activision said it intends to expand player reporting options and moderation, and will also take steps to cut back on toxic behavior over voice chat. "Our goal is to give players the tools needed to manage their own gameplay experience, combined with an enforcement approach that addresses hate speech, racism, sexism and harassment," Activision said. Specifically, that means more resources dedicated to detecting and stopping bad behavior, ongoing reviews of enforcement policies, "scrubbing databases to bring systems up to current standards," and more and better communications with players. 350,000 account bans is impressive, although well short of the 475,000 that have been banned over the past year for cheating. What's more interesting in today's message, though, is the promise to crack down on toxic voice chat, which is a trickier challenge than monitoring text-based comms. In-game voice has largely escaped oversight as a result. Riot, though, recently announced plans to begin recording all voice comms in Valorant so that it can verify complaints of abusive behavior in voice chat. Valorant players who find the scheme invasive can opt out, but will not be able to use voice chat if they do. Activision didn't reveal anything about how (or when) it plans to tackle voice-based toxicity, but it could be looking into a similar approach for Warzone and other Call of Duty games in the future.
