Scientists develop a tool to predict the probability of death of Corona patients British scientists have developed a four-level scoring model to predict the risk of patients dying in hospital from the Coronavirus, to help doctors quickly make a decision about the best care for each patient. The scientists published the new model in the "BMJ" medical journal, and they confirmed that it helps doctors classify patients in one of four groups at risk of developing corona from low, medium, high, or very high risk of death. As hospitals around the world face waves of patients infected with Covid-19, doctors have said they need faster and more accurate tools to predict risk, identify patients most at risk of dying, and help them quickly. The new model, called "4C", uses data such as age, gender, basic conditions, breathing and blood oxygen levels. The researchers said that the results of the study showed that it was able to predict risks more accurately than 15 similar models, and that it was more useful in making clinical decisions. “This will prove important in helping guide clinicians to provide optimal care for the most severe patients,” added Ewen Harrison, professor of surgery and data science at the University of Edinburgh, who co-led and briefly presented the research. According to "Al Hurra" channel, using different data inputs, the risk calculator gives scores ranging from 0 to 21 points, according to Harrison's description. Patients who score 15 or more are at 62% risk of death compared to 1% for those who scored 3. Degrees or less The researchers emphasized that patients with low 4C mortality may not require hospitalization, while patients in moderate and high risk groups could be rushed to obtain more aggressive treatment, including steroid drugs and admission to critical care units if needed.

Some might mutter 'filthy muck’ at the piles of blackened meat, but Jay Rayner sees only lunch Smokestak, 35 Sclater Street, London E1 6LB (020 3873 1733). Small plates £ 4.50- £ 9.50, big plates £ 8.50- £ 17.50, desserts £ 3.50- £ 7, wines from £ 27 Some people would take one look at the items in front of me at Smokestak, push their gnarled, slatboard chair back from their aggressively battered table, mutter “filthy muck” under their breath and walk away. Is it cooked food, or something you’d cook food over? Both the sawn-off beef rib and the plank of pork belly are not just darkly sauced. They’re mostly black, like something you’d rescue from the wreckage of a house fire while sobbing over what has been lost. I am not some people. I am the other sort of person, the one who looks at this and sees the long, virtuous interplay of fire, smoke and time on cow and pig muscle fiber; who sees only joyous caramelisation and the deep flavors gifted by the Maillard reaction, when heat says hello to amino acids and natural sugars and they all get along famously. I see only the good things. I see lunch. Barbecue obsessive David Carter opened Smokestak in 2016, after he’d spent years working the festival and street-food scene, turning a smoked brisket bun with pickled red chilli into a cult object. And when he finally got his hands on some bricks and mortar, he went all in. Those of us who spent too many nights in the early 1980s at the Camden Palace, mingling with Steve Strange's menagerie of painted boys and taffeta-ed girls, will recognize this for what it is: one glorious, considered and completely uncompromising pose. For the sake of doubt, I am very fond of total poseurs. Carter took the business of opening an urban barbecue restaurant, in the heart of east London, very seriously indeed. It’s not just those ludicrously uncomfortable chairs, seemingly made from old wooden pallets. (Those of this column’s readers who make a point of complaining in the comments section online about how uncomfortable the seats look - I call them Team Haemorrhoid - will be appalled.) Nor is it those equally raw tables. It’s everything. The bare concrete walls have been artfully blackened as if years of soot have been absorbed by them. The windowpanes have a perfectly executed Dickensian frosting of brown-black faux “pollution” painted on to them. There is ducting, and naked wiring, and rough floors and hard edges. It’s catering inspired by Hieronymus Bosch; It's the works canteen in the back carriages of Snowpiercer. The place is so distressed, I was tempted to Google a good therapist. All restaurant design is like this. That new French bistro that paints the walls a charming shade of nicotine yellow? It’s doing exactly the same thing. As is the tapas place that tiles the bar with blue ceramics, as is the sushi bar that splurges half the budget on blond wood. Restaurant design is about creating a space that tells you about the food you’re about to eat. Smokestak is no different. You may not like it. It may make you very cross. I do understand. If this is you: don’t go. At the heart of the operation is a very large smoker, of the sort you could you use to dispose of a body. It scents both the air and the food. A starter of crispy ox cheek with anchovy mayo brings four sizeable squared-off croquettes of beef that have been slow-cooked until a thrilling tangle of ripe, smoky fibers, before being breadcrumbed and deep-fried. They arrive white-flecked with crystals of salt against the dark brown. On the side is that mayo, to add an extra burst of salt and acidity. It’s a powerful and dramatic plateful for £ 6.50. The smoker gets involved in cooking most things, including a sprightly salsa made with charred sweetcorn. It comes with golden triangles of hand-pressed, slightly oily and salty corn tortilla. That famed brisket bun is on the menu, alongside a pulled-pork bun. You can also get both of the fillings by themselves, alongside other meats by 200g weights. The charred pork belly rib, served with pickled cucumber and red chilli, is sliced up and then reassembled into a whole, so it feels like you’re dismantling it. The crisped, sauced, charred surface gives way to a thin layer of fat on the verge of melting away, and then the soft meat below. The 30-day-aged beef short rib is a more solid and hefty version. Not everything here once had a pulse. A whole aubergine has been roasted over coals until the skin is blackened and blistered and the flesh has slumped. It’s then piled with roasted cashews, chopped spring onions and dribbles of bold, insistent red miso. The understanding of the need for acidity and heat alongside this kind of food is clear in their shouty ginger and green chilli slaw. It’s one of those viciously hot days in August, which dims the appeal of their sticky toffee pudding, even with the clotted cream ice-cream. Instead, I have their salty-sweet malt-flavored soft serve, a huge whorl of the stuff, apparently dusted with neat Ovaltine, in a serving that goes right to the bottom of the cone, and eventually starts melting all over my hands. I’m not complaining. I’m enjoying myself here on this mannered stage set. I’d like to come back on a cooler day, when the food might better suit the weather. It's obvious that this is cooking engineered for lubrication; Accordingly, there’s a list of beers brewed relatively nearby in Dalston, King’s Cross and Bermondsey. There’s also a short cocktail and wine list. This post-lockdown world has many downsides for the hospitality business. Lots of restaurants simply haven’t reopened. Others are on shorter hours and fewer tables. Launches are in extremely short supply. The latter is a rare upside, at least for me. It blunts the ingrained neophilia of the journalist. We can’t simply go dribbling after the shiny and new, like the wet-lipped fashionistas we are prone to be, because it barely exists. This means I get to play catch-up. I am four years late to the Smokestak party. I intend to make up for lost time.

KBB Editors’ Overview The Jeep Wrangler is the rare vehicle that needs no introduction. Its off-road capabilities are legendary, it’s as at home crawling over boulders as it is dropping off the kids at school, and its roots date to World War II, where it is credited for helping bring victory to the Allies. So how’s that for heritage? Today's Jeep Wrangler is a satisfying mix of classic design and real-deal off-road chops with modern safety systems, amenities, and technology. The 2021 Jeep Wrangler is now three years into its latest generation, known as the JL. It remains offered as a 2-door or the more po[CENSORED]r and roomier 4-door Wrangler Unlimited. All models come with a soft-top that can be removed (along with the doors) for open-air adventures. An optional hardtop is available. All Wranglers are 4-wheel drive, and a variety of engines are available. Standard is a V6, or buyers can opt for a spunky turbocharged 4-cylinder, a V6 with mild-hybrid assistance, or a wonderfully stout diesel V6 that debuted last year. New for 2021 is the Wrangler 4xe, a plug-in hybrid Jeep with an estimated 25 miles of electric-only range. The Wrangler is a top-seller and boasts class-leading resale value. But competition is heating up. Whereas the aging Toyota 4Runner has been the Wrangler's main rival, arriving shortly or here now are the Ford Bronco and Bronco Sport, and the reborn Land Rover Defender. How Much Does the 2021 Jeep Wrangler Cost? The 2021 Jeep Wrangler has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price starting at $ 28,295 for a 2-door model and $ 31,795 for the more po[CENSORED]r 4-door Wrangler Unlimited. These prices are before the rather hefty $ 1,495 destination fee. In reality, you’re likely to spend thousands more. Unless you’re OK with your Jeep Wrangler having a manual transmission, crank windows, and a small infotainment screen, you’ll probably step up to at least a Sport S or Sahara (4-door only) trim. In that case, plan on being in at least the high $ 30,000 or $ 40,000 range. The luxurious High Altitude model starts right around $ 50,000. These prices are right in line with rivals. The Toyota 4Runner begins over $ 36,000 and ranges to over $ 50,000. Perhaps the Jeep’s biggest new rival, the forthcoming Ford Bronco, is set to start at $ 28,500. Like the Wrangler, the Bronco is a body-on-frame off-roader offered in wither 2- or 4-door variants. The unibody Bronco Sport crossover will begin under $ 27,000. Before buying, check the KBB.com Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area are paying. The Jeep Wrangler has fantastic resale value, as evidenced by winning the latest Kelley Blue Book Best Resale Value Award in its class. Driving the 2021 Jeep Wrangler The 2021 Jeep Wrangler remains first and foremost an off-road vehicle. Yes, this Wrangler JL is its most refined yet, but don’t expect plushness. Its body-on-frame chassis and solid axles prioritize off-road ability vs. on-road comfort. On highways and at speed, the Wrangler can be squirrelly. In our tests, it required lots of steering input to keep things on track. Wind noise is also an issue. You won’t find many rounded edges here, and all those flat angles mean wind resistance. Will you get used to this? Most likely. And if you actually use Wrangler for what it's made to do, you’ll be amazed. Simply put, few vehicles can match the Wrangler's off-road prowess. Even in base form, it will easily tread over terrain that would make a unibody crossover SUV cringe. Amp it up in Rubicon trim with features like front and rear locking differentials and sway-bar disconnect, and it can tackle terrain as severe as, well, the Rubicon Trail. (We did just that years ago in the prior-gen Wrangler and were astounded at its capabilities). We might also add that, if you don’t know what a sway-bar disconnect is or why you might need it, you can probably skip the Rubicon model. Yes, we know it looks cool, but it seems a waste of money and hardware if you’ll never actually use it. The Wrangler's V6 is capable. With the standard manual transmission, it can feel a bit taxed, and the transmission isn’t all that gratifying. Then again, most buyers will opt for the automatic transmission, which works well. Another benefit is that for 2021, all V6 automatic models get the eTorque mild-hybrid assist as standard. The turbocharged 4-cylinder packs surprising punch. It puts out nearly as much horsepower as the V6 and more torque. Our favorite powertrain (at least for now) is the diesel V6. Potent and guttural, it enables the Wrangler to push through just about everything. We have yet to test the new 4xe plug-in hybrid Wrangler, but look forward to this new era. We should also mention that we spent a year driving and living with a Jeep Wrangler and came away impressed overall. Favorite Features DIESEL ENGINE It's the engine that Wrangler fans desired for years, and Jeep has delivered. Making 260 horsepower and an even more impressive 442 lb-ft of torque, we love the locomotive force this turbodiesel. At up to 29 mpg, it’s also relatively efficient. RESALE VALUE The Wrangler also stands out for its tremendous resale value. Its class-leading residual value means that if you decide to sell your Wrangler, you can expect top dollar compared to other used vehicles. 2021 Jeep Wrangler Interior The Jeep Wrangler has total seating for either four or five depending on model. The 2-door Jeep Wrangler has only a pair of seats in back, which means it holds four people total. The more po[CENSORED]r 4-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is more family-friendly with a traditional rear seat that holds up to three people for a total capacity of five passengers. As you might guess, the longer 4-door Wrangler also has better rear-seat legroom and cargo room behind the rear seat. Like its exterior, the Jeep Wrangler's interior design is marked by its simple, upright nature. The dash is wall-like with a center screen that ranges in size from 5 to 8.4 inches. Controls are simple and minimalistic. Base Wranglers still have manual door locks and crank windows. Models with power windows have the switches not on the doors (which are removable) but in the front console. The $ 50,000 High Altitude model is more spruced up with Nappa-trimmed leather upholstery, but you still won’t find power adjustments for the seats. Remember, this vehicle is made with the idea in mind that you will have to wash out its interior after a day in the dunes or fording watering. 2021 Jeep Wrangler Exterior This latest version of the Jeep Wrangler is only a few years old, but it still takes a pretty keen eye to tell this gen from the last one. That’s by design. The Wrangler is one of the most iconic vehicles in the world, and Jeep knows better than to drastically change the formula. As with the prior generation, the Jeep Wrangler comes in two forms: 2-door or 4-door. The 2-door model is markedly shorter at just 166.8 inches in length. The 4-door Unlimited model is nearly 20 inches longer. Both have a boxy design that dates to the Jeep's WW II ancestors. All models come with a soft-top that can be removed. Also like past models, the doors can be removed and the windshield folded, turning the Wrangler into a truly open-air adventure mobile, like a dune buggy with air conditioning and Apple CarPlay. For better insulation and protection, two hardtop roofs are available: one with twin removable panels, the other with a power-operated retracting cover. 2021 Jeep Wrangler Standard Features The 2021 Jeep Wrangler comes in four primary trims: Sport, Sport S, Sahara (4-door only), and Rubicon. At its most basic in the Sport trim, the Wrangler includes the base-model Wrangler Sport comes standard with the V6 and 6-speed manual transmission. It also comes standard with 4-wheel drive, in this case, Jeep's Command-Trac system. You also get standard fog lights, underbody skidplates, push-button ignition, and Jeep's new Sunrider with its clever sunroof panel. What’s more noteworthy is what’s missing. No air conditioning (it's optional on this base model), no power windows, no power door locks. The infotainment system is basic, just a 5-inch touchscreen display. No Apple CarPlay or Android Auto on this one, but it does have Bluetooth and a USB input. Most buyers will have a better experience stepping up to at least a Sport S model. That gets you power windows, door locks, and A / C, keyless entry, and opens the door for more options like active safety features and a better infotainment system. 2021 Jeep Wrangler Options The Sahara 4-door Wrangler gets a 7-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay / Android Auto, 18-inch wheels, dual-zone climate control, and opens the door for more options. The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon is made for serious off-road duty and boasts a low-range crawl ratio, front and rear locking diffs, electronically controlled sway bar disconnect, rock rails, and more. It also comes with the 7-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay / Android Auto that's In addition to the four primary trims, the Wrangler has other variants like the Willys, Altitude, and premium High Altitude. For 2021, there is an 80th Anniversary edition that can be had with leather seats and Granite Crystal interior accents, while the cheeky Wrangler Islander has a beach-theme interior and exterior with an white hard top roof. Options abound and vary with trim, but main highlights are the diesel V6 or turbocharged 4-cylinder engines, locking rear differential, forward-facing off-road camera, plus heated front seats and steering wheel, Alpine audio system, and an 8.4-inch touchscreen with navigation. Optional active-safety features include forward-collision warning with automatic braking, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring. 2021 Jeep Wrangler Engine The 2021 Jeep Wrangler comes standard with the venerable Pentastar 3.6-liter V6 that makes 285 horsepower. It is fitted standard with a 6-speed manual transmission. Most buyers, however, will want the optional 8-speed automatic transmission. For 2021, the 3.6-liter V6 connected to the automatic comes standard with the eTorque mild hybrid system to enhance fuel economy. Optional on all models is a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with 270 horsepower. It comes standard with an 8-speed automatic. Note the former 2.0-liter with eTorque assist has been dropped. Optional on 4-door Wranglers is the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6. As noted in Favorite Features, this engine has good horsepower (260) and even better torque (442 lb-ft). It comes standard with the 8-speed automatic. Coming later is the all-new Wrangler 4xe, a plug-in hybrid with up to 25 miles of electric-only range. It pairs a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder and two electric motors. Total output is estimated at 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, making this the most powerful Jeep Wrangler in the lineup. It also uses an 8-speed automatic transmission. Four-wheel-drive systems include the Command-Trac part-time 2-speed transfer case, Selec-Trac 2-speed transfer case with full-time 4-wheel drive, and the Rubicon's Rock-Trac 2-speed transfer case with 4.0 : 1 low-range gear, front and rear electric locking differentials, and disconnecting front sway bar. The Jeep Wrangler is rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds. Like other modern vehicles, the Wrangler uses a start / stop system to cut engine power at idle, such as stoplights. The system can be defeated with the press of a button.

The number of Coronavirus infections recorded in China decreased from 10 on Monday to two on Tuesday, all of which were imported infections. However, China has not recorded any local infection with the Corona virus, which appeared in Wuhan last December before it spread around the world, 24 days ago. Today, Wednesday, the Public Health Commission of China said that the mainland recorded two cases of Covid-19 disease, caused by the Coronavirus, on Tuesday, down from 10 cases on Monday. The committee added, in a statement Wednesday, that the two new cases of two people who arrived in the country from abroad, kept China without local injuries for the twenty-fourth consecutive day. The number of new cases in asymptomatic China decreased to 8, from 13 on Monday, according to Reuters. China does not count asymptomatic patients as confirmed cases. The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in China now stands at 85,146, while the number of deaths has remained steady at 4,634 deaths. On Tuesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping participated in an award ceremony for medical professionals who actively participated in fighting the virus. The Chinese president said that his country has passed a "historical and exceptional test" in its handling of the Corona virus, praising the country's "heroic struggle" against the disease. "We quickly achieved initial success in the people's war against the Coronavirus," he added. We are leading the world in the journey of economic recovery and the fight against Covid-19, according to what AFP reported. During the ceremony, the Chinese president distributed gold medals to four "heroes" from the medical field, to the applause of hundreds of attendees, Tuesday, who all wore masks and badges showing a large red flower on their uniforms. It is noteworthy that the United States is the country most affected by the Covid-19 epidemic, as about 6.3 million Americans have been infected with the virus, including about 190,000 deaths. The total number of infections in the world reached about 27.6 million, of whom about 900,000 died, according to the Johns Hopkins University Observatory to Track the Virus.

Baked apples are your starting point as the autumn evenings close in, but there are many more delicious ways of using the fruit, including savory and salad dishes, and an unusual cocktail The British apple season is a long one - spanning the earliest and latest ripening varieties, it runs from August to November - so there is no need to panic or speak of gluts. Stored under optimal conditions, apples also last a really long time, which is why we’re never without them. For the grower, apple season is a thing - for the rest of us, not so much. But there’s nothing like year-round plenty to induce a failure of imagination, a failure that often starts at the supermarket. I’ll just buy apples, you think. I can always pile them in a bowl until inspiration strikes. Sometimes the fruit flies get there first. Fortunately there is no shortage of apple recipes to warm up the cooling nights of early autumn. Here are 17 of the best. If the words “peel, core and slice a kilo of apples” are enough to put you off any new recipe, you may want to think about purchasing a crank-handle peeling machine. While hardly necessary gadgets, peeler-corers are relatively inexpensive things of beauty, fun to use, and most claim to do pears as well. Even if you don’t want to risk the investment, you should still watch a YouTube video of someone demonstrating some antique models, which is reliably mesmerising. An old-fashioned baked apple is as good a place to begin as any, since it requires a minimum of effort, skill or planning. Cored eating apples are stuffed with a mix of spices and dried fruit and then baked until soft - between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on size. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall uses a fruit butter that also includes muscovado sugar and cider brandy, while Nigel Slater offers the option of honey, brandy and crumbled ginger cake. A baked apple is, as you can see, a forgiving thing, so feel free to use what you’ve got. Apple charlotte is only marginally more complicated: browned apples are baked in a loaf tin lined with white bread, like an autumnal version of summer pudding. Apple crumble is another classic, and it's also a handy way to use up any blackberries you may have picked. You should never pass up the opportunity because there simply aren’t 17 good ways to cook with blackberries. There are, by my count, four, and this is one of them. Dan Lepard's alehouse apple pie is as rough and ready as it sounds: the pastry even has beer in it. The apples, chopped, browned in butter and layered with spices, are loaded into the middle of a square of rolled pastry, which is then folded haphazardly over them by the corners, so the resulting pie looks as if it was made by a drunk. For a more considered-looking pudding, Felicity Cloake's perfect French apple tart has a slick, patisserie-style finish, but don't worry - all that fussiness is confined to the top layer, with thinly sliced apples (peeling, she insists, is optional) laid out in a neat spiral. Below that are layers of frangipane and apple puree. This is not the same as a tarte tatin, which is baked upside down, with the pastry on top, and then inverted for serving. Here’s an easy recipe for that using shop-bought puff pastry. Crisp eating apples are recommended for all of the above, by the way. As Lepard points out, sour cooking apples tend to turn to fluff when baked. His recipe for bramley and custard meringue pie actually makes a virtue of this - the fluffy apple mush is swirled into a custard and topped with stiff egg whites. Toffee apples exert a powerful nostalgic pull, although thinking back they were probably more fun to make than they were to eat. This recipe is certainly simple enough, but it begins with an off-putting step: you have to drop your apples in boiling water first, because they're coated in a preservative wax and if you don't get it off the toffee won ' t stick. To be fair, you’d probably need to do this even if your fruit came straight from the tree - apples produce their own natural wax, which is washed off during processing, and then replaced. The classic combination of apple and toffee can be revisited in more genteel form in this toffee apple cake from James Rich, or in Liam Charles’ toffee apple buns. Granny smith is the preferred variety for both recipes, but don’t let an aging bowl of cox’s stop you trying either. Apart from puddings, apples work beautifully in any number of savory dishes, and have a well-known affinity with pork - surely the least alarming of all the meat / fruit pairings. This is exploited to good effect in Yotam Ottolenghi's roast pork belly, along with soy and ginger and again in this chorizo, apple and cider tapas from Rachel Kelly. Gizzi Erskine's pork and apple stroganoff is a slow braise that can be left to gently bubble away until tender. Apple is a familiar component of fruit salad, but here are two salads where apple is the only fruit, providing a sharp, sweet contrasting note - a tart variety would be ideal for this sort of thing. The first is a remoulade of apple and radish and the second a Thai-inspired tomato, apple and shallot salad with a lime and fish sauce dressing. Finally, an apple cocktail - not the ubiquitous and deeply misguided appletini, but a drink from the Cutting Room Bar's Yoann Carrot called Apple Crumble in a Glass. It's a heady mix of bourbon, apple juice, amaretto, cannelle syrup and digestive biscuit. Unless you press your own apple juice - and I think you should - the only apple required here is for the fan-shaped garnish, which is probably also the most difficult part of the recipe. Skip that bit if you have to, and remember: do not operate apple-peeling machinery under the influence of alcohol.

Pros Feels classier than its Chevy Equinox counterpart, especially Denali trim Efficient and user-friendly infotainment system Arguably good-looking Pleasant ride quality Cons Push-button gear selection instead of the traditional lever Higher trims are expensive for the class What’s New This Year? Optional GMC Pro Safety Plus replaces Driver Alert I package KBB Editors’ Overview The 2021 GMC Terrain has a challenge. Although it's an arguably handsome compact-crossover SUV offering strong turbocharged engines, a chassis that favors ride comfort over cornering precision (perfectly reasonable in this kind of vehicle) and comes with a decent level of standard equipment, it's in direct competition with such giants of the class as the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. Both Japanese rivals have more interior space for passengers and cargo alike. So GMC pitches its Terrain at the more upscale end of the market, as illustrated by the elegant (for a crossover SUV) styling. And just to top it off, the Denali version is the plushest of all the new Terrain models. How much does the 2021 GMC Terrain cost? Only available with front-wheel drive and the smallest engine, the 2021 GMC Terrain SL has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $ 25,000. The destination charge is $ 1,195, bringing the total to $ 26,195. We recommend checking out higher Terrains. The SLE, from $ 29,595, doesn’t add much, but becomes eligible for more options. All-wheel drive is an extra $ 1,600. The SLT starts at $ 32,395. We expect the 2021 Terrain Denali to start at $ 39,495 before options. At the time of compiling this review, official pricing for the Denial trim has yet to be announced. These prices are similar to the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Mazda CX-5. They’re also identical to last year’s figures. Check the KBB.com Fair Purchase Price to see what other buyers in your area are paying for their new GMC Terrain. Resale values tend not to be as strong as Honda and Toyota, so that aspect needs factoring in as well. Driving the 2021 GMC Terrain Making just 170 horsepower, the base 1.5-liter turbo is best described as adequate. The 252-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter engine is the one to choose, and can even pull 3,500 pounds. With either engine, a 9-speed automatic transmission is in the picture. Around town or on the highway, the Terrain is comfortable and quiet. Attack a set of curves, and it's nimble enough to be engaging, as opposed to wildly entertaining. That’s partly thanks to reinforcing up front that makes the steering feel confident. The 2021 Terrain Denali comes with a dedicated suspension setup that’s even more comfortable than the lower trims. Favorite Features STANDARD GMC PRO SAFETY Standard in every 2021 Terrain, this array of safety features includes forward-collision mitigation with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance / lane-departure warning, and automatic high beams. FLEXIBLE CARGO AREA We hinted at the 2021 Terrain’s relatively smallish cargo area earlier, but it is a smart space, especially with the fold-flat front passenger seat offering extra versatility for carrying longer objects. There’s handy under-floor stowage as well. 2021 GMC Terrain Interior It’s quiet in here. Effective sound insulation, a supple ride, and well-cushioned seats make the 2021 Terrain's cabin a pleasant environment, even if its design is not as well-considered as the exterior. A few hard plastics in the lower areas of the dashboard and doors are reminders that this is a mainstream marque, not a luxury one. The embroidered headrests and stitched dashboard covering in the Denali bring a sophisticated air, though. The rear seats don’t slide or recline, but the front seatback folds for some extra cargo versatility. Luggage space behind the rear seats measures 29.6 cubic feet. Folding them down creates a cargo area of 63.3 cubic feet. Neither figure compares well with the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4. 2021 GMC Terrain Exterior Lower trims of the GMC Terrain have simpler designs (but it could be argued, no less attractive), while the Denali is brighter and more ornate, from the grille and front bumper right back to the tail. Overall, the Terrain sports sharp lines, highly stylized headlights with LED accents, and the current trend of rear pillar treatment that gives the impression of a floating roof. The SLE and SLT trims are eligible for an Elevated Edition package that includes black-finished 19-inch alloy wheels and blacked-out exterior accents. 2021 GMC Terrain Standard Features At its entry level, which is the SL trim, the 2021 GMC Terrain has the turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive. It's not eligible for all-wheel drive, the more powerful engine, nor several desirable options. Even so, standard equipment levels include 17-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry / ignition, leather-wrapped steering wheel, active noise cancellation, active grille shutters, an infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth phone and music streaming, Apple CarPlay / Android Auto smartphone integration, four USB ports, and the GMC Pro Safety package of driver assistance features (see the Safety Technology section below). 2021 GMC Terrain Options The SLE trim comes with a self-dimming rearview mirror and more available options. The SLT adds an 8-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, dual-zone automatic climate control, remote start, power-adjustable / heated front seats, leather upholstery, 18-inch wheels, and self-dimming side mirrors. This punchy chopped salad of soaked and torn stale bread, onions and tomatoes dressed in olive oil and vinegar has many variations - but how will you make yours? "There is too much ambiguity in that terrible adjective, 'true', that would brand as false any variation, any inventiveness and departure from the rule." This quote from the Italian food historian Massimo Montanari is one I come back to again and again. This summer especially, while finishing my next book (about pasta), a process that has been hard and delicious, fascinating, frustrating and ridiculous. Also driven - haunted - by a sense of responsibility towards a food that contains a philosophy of a civilization; only not my civilization, but one I share in. This sense has been strongest when writing recipes. And this is how it should be. I have been writing about classic Italian recipes, some of which have histories that have filled books, that people have gone to battle over, and that are for many sacred. I want to do them justice. I am also a home cook with my own cooking mind and opinions, and I know the anarchy of ingredients and life. The result is that, every few days, I have gone into a semi-paralysis, believing that every time I was untrue to a recipe, even if it was unintentional, an Italian died. Fortunately, I have a surefire way to cure recipe-writing paralysis: I go into the kitchen and make the recipe. Because, standing there chopping carrots, you remember that the minute you start cooking a recipe, it becomes yours, regardless of whether it's a two-ingredient sauce or three-day ragù, or if you are following vague advice or someone's words to the letter. Another way is to cross-reference recipes, especially for “classic” ones that stir up strong opinions. As soon as you do, the anarchy begins; recipes both verbal and written, disagreeing, contradicting and debating with each other. Also, there is a direct correlation between the insistent use of the words “authentic” and “true”, and the level of disagreement. Some writers even disagree with themselves, which I find reassuring. There is a wonderful Roman writer called Livio Jannattoni whose many books include two about Roman food in the 1990s. They are astonishing in their detail; their clarity about the way things should be. Panzanella, for example, which he thinks has been distorted (he says it should never be eaten as a starter), consists of slices of home-style bread - not too fresh, not too stale, wetted slightly, indented with fingertips - topped with Diced tomato, salt, basil leaves and good oil. No pepper. If you add pepper: stop. Having been absolutely clear about the proper way, Jannattoni then goes on to describe another panzanella. Torn bread (four thick slices, or broken-up rusks) soaked in water and vinegar, squeezed, then dressed with salt, pepper, capers, vinegar and olive oil, arranged on a plate, topped with a pounded dressing of (three) anchovies , a clove of garlic, a pinch of red chilli and some more vinegar, and topped with two sliced, hard-boiled eggs and olive oil. Meanwhile, in Tuscany, Giovanni Righi Parnenti explains that panzanella is a dish that dates back in the region to the 17th century and to a poem. Traditionally, it was considered zuppa di pane freddo - “cold bread soup”: that is, bread soaked in water (which explains the name pan - bread - zanella - the dish), and topped with sliced onion and cucumber. Later, as it evolved, as recipes do and should, diced tomatoes, ripped basil and olive oil were added, maybe pepper and a red-wine vinegar. Parnenti goes on to describe other versions with anchovy, tuna or sliced, hard-boiled eggs, also celery, parsley and thyme. Like Jannatoni, he describes the rich history of panzanella in different parts of Tuscany in almost sacred terms. Fortunately, I also have a surefire way to cure recipe-reading paralysis: I go into the kitchen and make panzanella. And, as you can see from the above, you have a lot of options when it comes to the recipe, including any variation and inventiveness you might bring. Then, as you soak slices of ripped bread, or toast them, if that is what you do, remember that the minute you start to cook a recipe, it becomes yours.

The plug-in hybrid version of Toyota's po[CENSORED]r compact crossover SUV will be the quickest, most powerful and most fuel-efficient RAV4 ever. With total system output of 302 horsepower. The company says the vehicle will accelerate to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, much faster than the 7.8 seconds for the current hybrid model. In addition to the being the quickest RAV4 ever, the Prime also has up to 39 miles of pure electric range from its lithium ion battery pack. How much does the RAV4 Prime cost? Pricing hasn’t been announced, but we expect the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime to start in the low $ 30,000 range. For reference, the 2020 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid starts at $ 28,100 plus $ 1,120 delivery. When does it go on sale? Toyota says the RAV4 Prime will begin arriving at dealerships in the summer of 2020. Proven powertrain The RAV4 Prime is equipped with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine similar to the current engine. While it also produces 176 horsepower, it is tuned differently to better match the output of the new electric motors, one on each axle, to provide all-wheel drive and the 302 horsepower. Range and fuel economy Toyota says the RAV4 Prime can travel up to 39 all-electric miles on a full charge of its lithium ion battery pack, and achieve the equivalent of 90 mpg while doing it (90 mpge). Total range and hybrid-mode fuel economy have yet to be announced, but for reference the RAV4 Hybrid is rated to deliver 40 combined mpg and 580 miles per tank. Toyota RAV4 Prime SE As a result of its high performance, Toyota is offering the 2021 RAV4 Prime in its sportier SE and XSE trim levels. While the standard hybrid is available only in higher XSE trim, the RAV4 Prime will have the new SE trim level which features 18-inch wheels, distinctive grille design and lower front spoiler along with piano black exterior accents. Extended battery warranty In conjunction with the RAV4 Prime announcement Toyota also said it is extending the battery warranty on all 2020 model year and later electrified vehicles. The new warranty covers batteries in hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and fuel cell electric vehicles, which will now be guaranteed for 10 years or 150,000 miles rather than 8 years and 100,000 miles. The RAV4 is Toyota's most po[CENSORED]r vehicle, with 324,622 units sold through September. Of those, 62,881 were hybrid models, far eclipsing sales of the Prius, Toyota's long-time hybrid leader, which accounted for just 50,258 in the first three quarters of the year. Other choices Adding a plug-in hybrid to the RAV4 lineup keeps it a step ahead of the Honda CR-V lineup, which is just adding its first hybrid. And while the new Ford Escape will also be available in plug-in hybrid form, efficiency-minded leadfoots should know the Escape plug-in promises only 209 horsepower.

As more women take charge of commercial beer production, a new book reveals their pivotal role in the industry historically It’s an industry long associated with men, from the whiskered industrialists of the 19th century to the hipster craft brewers of the present. But women have played a significant role in brewing beer in Britain, and are increasingly running breweries and creating new beers. A new book, published this week, unearths the pivotal role of women in family breweries. “Beer is often portrayed as a male domain, even though many iconic breweries would not be what they are today if they didn't have strong women at the helm,” says its author, the veteran beer expert and real-ale advocate Roger Protz . The Family Brewers of Britain: A Celebration of British Brewing Heritage tells the story of about 30 family firms that, according to Protz, have been overlooked in the current focus on new, small craft breweries that have sprung up in recent years. The family ventures have “survived wars, recessions and all manner of dramas, and are still brewing wonderful beer”, Protz told the Observer. As he researched the book, he discovered that women have occupied key positions in breweries as far back as the late 19th century. "It was such a male-dominated industry that it was quite a surprise to find women running these very substantial companies so many years ago." One was Hester Parnall, chairman of the St Austell brewery in Cornwall from 1916 to 1939, a “matriarchal figure”, who invited the Prince of Wales and Wallis Simpson, and prime minister Stanley Baldwin to her country mansion. “Her presence in the brewery never went unnoticed,” Protz writes. “Clifford Hockin, who rose from office boy to company secretary, described her as‘ ruling the company with the grace of a duchess combined with the aplomb of the successful businessman. All who came into contact with her, and indeed those who did not, were on their best behavior’. ” One of her brewery workers recalled: “The first man to spot her chauffeur-driven Daimler arriving in the yard would tap out a message of warning on the water pipes, which could be heard throughout the brewery. She once sacked a chap she caught painting with a fag in his mouth, and she sacked one of the drivers for picking up a passenger. She was a proper dragon. ” But the history of women brewers reaches far beyond the aristocratic Parnall. In Anglo-Saxon times women made beer at home at the same time as baking bread. They were known as brewsters, and the best in the village turned their homes into an early version of a pub. “Only in the 18th and 19th centuries did we see big commercial brewers dominated by men to meet demand for a new beer called porter,” said Protz. But then [the first world] war came, and the men who managed and worked in the breweries went off to fight, leaving women to step into the breach. “I’ve seen many photographs showing women doing all the brewing processes in the first and second world wars while the men were away. It was physically very hard work - filling barrels with beer and moving them around takes strength, ”said Protz. Over the course of the 20th century, there was also a shift in the beer-drinking culture. “I remember going into a pub in Middlesbrough in the 1960s with a woman friend, and as we walked in the conversation stopped. No one said a word until we’d finished our beer and left. “Now pubs are open to everyone, female friendly, family friendly. When I started writing about beer [in the mid-1970s], the only two kinds you could get in this country were mild and bitter. Look at the choice now. And golden ales and lighter beers are very po[CENSORED]r with women. ” Among the women that feature in Protz's book, published by Camra Books, are Jane Kershaw, a director of the Manchester brewery Joseph Holt, who was named Brewer of the Year in 2019. “This is a firm that is famously conservative - if they can make a giant leap, then others can, ”said Protz. Another is Belinda Sutton, who runs Elgood’s brewery in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, with her sister Jennifer Everall. When she started working at the brewery in 1984, Sutton attended a meeting of the Brewers’ Society - now known as the British Beer and Pub Association - where she was the only woman in the room. “Two of the men asked me to fetch them a drink, and another asked me where the loos were,” she told the Observer. “Now I deal with more women in the industry than men. There’s been a huge cultural change. ” Family and craft brewers are facing challenging times, said Protz. “The large global breweries are on the march. Sales of bog-standard lager are in decline so they’re looking for more interesting beers, and running the rule over smaller brewers to see if they can take them over. ” The pandemic has piled on additional pressure. “It's been so hard, but I'm so full of admiration for the way small brewers have been creative, switching to bottled beer and direct deliveries while the pubs were shut,” said Protz, 81, who edited 24 annual editions of the Campaign for Real Ale's Good Beer Guide and wrote a beer column for the Guardian until 2006.

We dug through all of the all-electric cars on sale today to find the five models with the best EV range. Not surprisingly, Tesla cars dominate the conversation, as all four of the models the brand sells now have mileage figures that easily outpace everything else on the market. Because of this, we've consolidated the company's cars in one place at the top of our list. Here are the top five electric cars on sale today with the longest driving distance on a single charge Tesla: Up to 402 miles This list could easily be the Tesla show. The brand's vehicles have the longest ranges available today. Despite price tags that can swell to over $ 100,000, Tesla's vehicles have compelling technologies, forward-thinking capabilities, and unique style. The Model S was the brand’s first vehicle and remains po[CENSORED]r today. The Long Range version can go 402 miles between charges. The price, though, starts at $ 81,190 including $ 1,200 delivery. The Performance version, which goes 348 miles, costs $ 96,190. Using the same platform, the Model X SUV promises a max range of 351 miles in Long Range trim, and costs the same as the Model S. The Performance Model X goes 305 miles and starts at $ 101,190. Tesla Model 3 is best described as the company’s mainstream sedan. It comes in three configurations, a standard range of 250 miles with a sticker of $ 39,190; A dual-motor Long Range trim that delivers 322 miles at $ 48,190, or a 299-mile Performance trim for $ 56,190. The Model Y, which shares its component set with Model 3, is a compact crossover. Two models are available, the 316-mile Long Range for $ 51,190 and the 291-mile Performance for $ 61,190. All prices include $ 1,200 delivery. Teslas as no longer eligible for federal tax credits. Chevrolet Bolt EV: 259 miles Yes, you can buy an EV from the same company that makes the Camaro and Corvette. And yes, the Chevrolet Bolt really gets 259 miles of range. For the 2020 model year, engineers went back into the chemistry did some magic to coax 21 more miles of range from the battery pack to best its Korean rival by 1 mile. It also has the lowest starting price of any vehicle on our list, landing at $ 37,495 including destination. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard and run on a 10.2-inch touchscreen. There’s no option to add navigation to the Bolt, and the Chevy's advanced driver assist systems are locked away in added-cost options packages or a trim-level upgrade. The Bolt’s electric motor drives the front wheels to the tune of 200 horsepower and is capable of an EPA-estimated 119 MPGe. Charging takes about ten hours with a 240-volt outlet, and Chevrolet says the car can gain 25 miles of range for every hour of charging. Like Tesla, GM has run out of federal EV tax credits. Hyundai Kona: 258 Miles Starting at just over $ 38,000, the Hyundai Kona Electric had the best range of any non-Tesla EV until the Chevy Bolt upped its game. Hyundai range of 258 miles is aided by an aggressive regenerative braking system and a specially-designed exterior trim that reduces drag. The Kona Electric has also earned an EPA-estimated 120 MPGe combined rating. Though it's built on the same platform and shares much of its basic engineering with the standard Kona subcompact crossover, the vehicle was designed from the outset to accommodate battery packs, which means that there’s no space compromise inside. All models come well-equipped out of the box, with a 7.0-inch touchscreen that has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, blind-spot monitors, and automatic emergency braking as standard equipment across the Kona EV line. This Hyundai electric is eligible for the full $ 7,500 federal tax credit. However, be aware Kona is available in only 10 states. Kia Niro EV: 239 miles The Kia Niro slides in just behind the Kia Soul EV, which promises a range of 243 miles. However, the Soul EV misses our list because Kia put off the launch until 2021. With 239 miles of range, full recharge in under 10 hours on 220-volt power, and the ability to fast charge to 80 percent in 75 minutes, Kia buyers aren't missing much while they wait on the upcoming Soul EV. Kia’s Niro shares a motor and a battery pack with the Kona, but rides on a slightly longer wheelbase and is longer overall as well, thanks to shared underpinnings with the Hyundai Ioniq. The Niro also sports a higher starting price tag than the Kona, at $ 40,210. That money buys more cargo space, more rear legroom, and many of the same standard tech and safety features. All Niro models come standard with adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, rear cross-traffic alerts, forward collision warnings, and blind-spot monitors. Like Kona, Niro EV is available in a limited number of states. It’s also eligible for the maximum federal tax credit. Jaguar I-Pace: 234 miles The Jaguar I-Pace sees itself as a Tesla rival. From its 2019 launch, the I-Pace relies on dual electric motors and a 90-kWh battery pack to send 394 horsepower through a one-speed transmission to all four wheels. The large battery delivers a range of 234 miles but demands a long charging time. Using a 240-volt outlet, the vehicle will take nearly 13 hours to get a full charge, but owners with access to a DC fast charger can reach 80 percent in just 40 minutes. The I-Pace is expensive, checking in at $ 70,875 after a $ 1,025 destination fee for the base S trim. The all-wheel drive system on the I-Pace gives its exceptional off-road ability, something that one wouldn’t associate with an electric. Its styling and interior appointments are also truer to that of a traditional luxury vehicle.
