  5. Ferrari has revealed the 488 Pista Spyder at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California, with identical performance to the coupé. 0-62mph in 2.85sec and a top speed of 211mph thanks to a power output of 710bhp and maximum torque of 568lb ft are claimed. Power comes from the same 90deg twin-turbo 3.9-litre V8, with Ferrari claiming that the car is its most technologically advanced drop-top to date, despite the relatively recent introduction of the ultra-exclusive LaFerrari Aperta hypercar. The car is 100kg heavier than the coupé, at 1380kg dry to the coupé’s 1280kg. During the car’s development, the designers main brief was for the car to stay as true to the coupé’s aerodynamic efficiency as possible, so as to not alter the car’s performance. It’s also got the same Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer system as the regular 488 Pista, which adjusts brake pressure at the calipers to improve cornering. Lightweight materials have helped keep the car’s weight down, including using straps instead of traditional interior door handles. The carpets are also stripped out and replaced with aluminium foot plates. Lack of roof aside, the car’s new 20in star-effect wheels mark out the Pista Spyder, while the Pebble Beach car was finished in an exclusive new livery. It’s expected to cost well in excess of the coupé’s £252,695 price before personalisations, although Ferrari hasn’t yet released an official figure, nor a number on how many are planned to be made.
  6. Pope Francis has refused to respond to claims by a former Vatican diplomat, who has called for him to resign. Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano also accused him of covering up allegations of sexual abuse by a US cardinal. The Pope was asked about the accusations by reporters on his flight back to Rome after this weekend's Papal visit to Ireland. He said he would not say a single word in response to the 11-page letter from Archbishop Vigano. "I will say sincerely that I must say this, to you," he said, when asked by a journalist about the letter, "and all of you who are interested: Read the document carefully and judge it for yourselves. "I will not say one word on this. I think the statement speaks for itself." In pictures: Pope in Ireland What happened to Catholic Ireland? How Ireland received a penitent Pope The timing of the letter, released as the Pope addressed sexual abuse by priests during his visit to Ireland, has raised questions about whether Pope Francis is facing a coordinated attack from traditionalists within the Catholic hierarchy. "You have sufficient journalistic capacity to draw conclusions," Pope Francis told the reporters on board his plane. "When a little time has passed and you have the conclusions, perhaps I will talk," he added. What does Archbishop Vigano allege? He says the pontiff knew about allegations of sex abuse by a prominent US cardinal for five years before accepting his resignation last month. Archbishop Vigano says he had told Pope Francis in 2013 that Cardinal Theodore McCarrick had faced extensive accusations of sexually abusing lower-ranking seminarians and priests. The Pope "knew from at least June 23 2013 that McCarrick was a serial predator," wrote Archbishop Vigano, adding that "he knew that he was a corrupt man, he covered for him to the bitter end." Pope Francis must be the first to set a good example for cardinals and bishops who covered up McCarrick's abuses and resign along with all of them," the letter says. However, Archbishop Vigano has not produced any written or other evidence to verify his alleged 2013 conversation with the Pope. He served as the Vatican's ambassador to Washington from 2011 until 2016. He also says he wrote a memo to senior figures in the Vatican as early as 2006, warning that Theodore McCarrick was suspected of abusing adults at a seminary while he was a bishop in New Jersey between 1981 and 2001. McCarrick, now 88, resigned in disgrace in July. Did the Pope address sexual abuse during his visit to Ireland? At a Mass on Sunday in Dublin's Phoenix Park, the culmination of his two-day visit to Ireland, Pope Francis begged forgiveness for the "abuses in Ireland, abuses of power, conscience and sexual abuses" perpetrated by Church leaders. Earlier, he said no-one could fail to be moved by stories of those who "suffered abuse, were robbed of their innocence and left scarred by painful memories", and reiterated his wish to see justice served. Pope Francis used the penitential rite of the Mass to list a litany of different types of abuse and mistreatment inflicted on Irish people by Church figures, and the cover-ups of sex crimes. On each occasion he asked for forgiveness, the congregation - estimated by the Vatican to number 300,000 - applauded. What allegations has the Church in Ireland faced? The Irish Catholic Church has been rocked by revelations of paedophile priests, sexual abuse in Catholic-run orphanages, and the exploitation of women in mother-and-baby homes. During the first day of his trip, Pope Francis met eight survivors of sexual abuse, reportedly telling them he viewed clerical sex abuse as "filth". The Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Leo Varadkar delivered a strong warning to the Pope to take action against clergy involved in child abuse and in keeping it secret. Meanwhile in Tuam, County Galway, about 1,000 people gathered for a silent vigil to remember the Tuam Babies. The Tuam home was one of 10 institutions to which about 35,000 unmarried pregnant women are thought to have been sent. Large crowds also attended a Stand4Truth event in Dublin to show solidarity with victims of clerical sex abuse. How has Ireland changed? The Ireland that the Pope visited is a different country to that which greeted Pope John Paul II in 1979. Since the Polish pope's visit, there have been huge changes in public attitudes to social issues including abortion, contraception, divorce and same-sex marriage. The country voted for constitutional change on same sex-marriage in 2015 and voted overwhelmingly to overturn its strict abortion law in May. Pope Francis heard Mr Varadkar, a gay man, speak out against the traditional Catholic teaching on the family. The taoiseach said that the Republic of Ireland had modernised its laws, "understanding that marriages do not always work, that women should make their own decisions and that families come in many forms" - including those headed by a lone parent, same-sex parents or parents who are divorced and remarried.

  10. Bugatti has shown more of its Chiron-based Divo hypercar on social media, as well as a shot of the car under a sheet ahead of its launch tonight. The latest shots reveal the car's distinctive headlights, shape and some of its proportions before its styling is revealed at Pebble Beach. Few details of the Divo have been revealed so far, but a glimpse of the car under a silk sheet suggests that it'll have a large stability fin at the back, as well as a dominant wing extending past the back of its diffuser. It's also possible to see that the car's window line is completely distinct to that of the Chiron, with a rising shoulder underneath it, extending down from the back of the glass to the very front of the car. The wheel arches pull tension in the fabric, suggesting they're sharply extended from the main body. A video showing none of the car, but with an audio track of the car's 8.0-litre W16 engine has also been shown ahead of the full reveal. A previous shot of the £4.42million machine's rear lights can be seen in a video released on social media, which also shows the outline of a large wing. Head of exterior design, Frank Heyl, also revealed that the Divo will move forward from Bugatti's current design: "We’ve kept and further developed our Bugatti design DNA features, but on top of that have also taken the opportunity to exercise our freedom and create a completely new form language. Head of exterior design, Frank Heyl, also revealed that the Divo will move forward from Bugatti's current design: "We’ve kept and further developed our Bugatti design DNA features, but on top of that have also taken the opportunity to exercise our freedom and create a completely new form language.” OUR VERDICT Bugatti Chiron Bugatti Chiron Bugatti originally brought us the Veyron and now has masterminded a 1487bhp, £2.5m masterpiece that's set to become the world's fastest production car Find an Autocar car review Rampantly fast and sharper than any other car of its type, the Urus is a... In a clip recently released by the brand, Divo project manager Pierre Rommelfanger confirmed that the car will be lightweight, downforce-focused and will generate more G-force than the Chiron, but is intended for use on the road, rather than being a concept car, show car or track-only special. The brand has confirmed that the car is intended for road use, as well as track use. Another shot showing embroidered branding for the car reveals none of the performance-boosting revisions over the Chiron, but the hashtag ‘Built for corners’ suggests a set-up more suited to track driving than outright speed. Bugatti also lauds the car's "enormous downforce and G-forces". The name comes from French racer Albert Divo, who won the 1928 and 1929 Targa Florio for Bugatti. Bugatti hasn't revealed the car yet, but confirms that Divo will be the first project undertaken by its newly resurrected coachbuilding division. "New, strong design language" suggests its look will be notably distinct from that of the regular Chiron. Set to be revealed at The Quail Motorsports Gathering later this summer, the Divo will add to the series of editions that starts with the standard, £2.5 million Chiron and continues to the more lightweight, hardcore Chiron Sport. The Divo is expected to follow the Sport in getting no alterations to Bugatti's 1479bhp quad-turbo 8.0-litre W16, but lightweighting measures, downforce-boosting bodywork, upgraded suspension and other corner-friendly mechanical tweaks are confirmed. It’s likely that the Divo will complete the brand's line-up for the foreseeable future, given that it will be the third variant launched in two years. Bugatti will charge £4.42 million for each of the 40 Divos that will be made - a heavy premium over the other two models. “Happiness is not around the corner. It is the corner. The Divo is made for corners. With the Divo, we want to thrill people throughout the world. With this project, the Bugatti team has an opportunity to interpret the brand DNA in terms of agile, nimble handling in a significantly more performance-oriented way," said Bugatti boss Stephan Winkelmann. Last year, Bugatti set the record for the 0-400kph-0 run with a time of 41.96sec, but Koenigsegg broke this record twice a few weeks later. Koenigsegg also broke the production car speed record, which has remained unchallenged by Bugatti. Bugatti hasn’t hinted at any motorsport intentions with the Divo, except for the location of its unveiling, but it would likely be a contender for the production car Nürburgring lap record. To set the record, it would have to beat the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ’s time of 6:44.97. If it were to do so, it would make four of the five fastest production car laps from Volkswagen Group products, joining the SVJ, the current second-place holder, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS, and fourth-place Lamborghini Huracán Performante. Porsche also recently smashed the outright 'Ring record with its modified Le Mans car, the 919 Evo.
  11. US Republican Senator John McCain will no longer be continuing treatment for his brain cancer, his family has announced. Mr McCain, 81, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain tumour last summer and had been undergoing treatment since July 2017. He left Washington to be with his family in Arizona, though he has still been a vocal political figure. He has, at times, been a fierce critic of President Donald Trump. Who is Senator John McCain? His family said in a statement shared with US media: "Last year, Senator John McCain shared with Americans the news our family already knew: he had been diagnosed with an aggressive glioblastoma, and the prognosis was serious." "In the year since, John has surpassed expectations for his survival. But the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict. "With his usual strength of will, he has chosen to discontinue medical treatment." In a tweet, Meghan McCain, Mr McCain's daughter, said that her family "is deeply appreciative of all the love and generosity" they have received over the past year. His wife, Cindy McCain, also shared the family's statement on Twitter, saying: "I love my husband with all of my heart. God bless everyone who has cared for my husband along the journey." Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell said he was "very sad" to hear the news. Mr McCain spent more than five years as a prisoner of war. The six-term senator and 2008 Republican presidential nominee was diagnosed after doctors discovered his tumour during surgery to remove a blood clot from above his left eye last July. Glioblastoma is a particularly aggressive brain cancer, and increases in frequency with age, affecting more men than women. At the time, his daughter said that the family reacted with "shock" to the diagnosis. "It won't surprise you to learn that in all of this, the one of us who is most confident and calm is my father," she said on Twitter. "So he is meeting this challenge as he has every other. Cancer may afflict him in many ways: but it will not make him surrender. Nothing ever has."

  13. After a selection of leaked shots of the new BMW Z4 were leaked online via Instagram recently, official sketches have been posted ahead of the car's Pebble Beach reveal later today. The new sketches show the car's design in full, albeit exaggerated, and confirm the authenticity of leaked shots from earlier in the month. BMW has also confirmed the existence of a special First Edition car, which is is expected to arrive ahead of the regular production Z4 in March 2019. Those leaked shots, from an unknown source, quickly spread all over the web after their publishing, showing the Audi TT rival's exterior and interior design. They show that the production roadster takes close inspiration from the original concept, with an exterior featuring a raft of technology inspired by BMW's latest models. The car in the leaked images is badged M40i, which is expected to be the range-topping Z4 model. A shot of the engine bay confirms it will use a turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder unit shared with the M240i, expected to produce about 350bhp. BMW Z4 prototype: first drive of new roadster In June, a series of patent images revealed the car's styling, showing the car's swept-back headlights, flat rear lights and wide kidney grilles, akin to the 2017 Z4 concept. However, these new pictures seem to be the first sighting of the final production model. BMW has previously confirmed the Z4 will be revealed at Pebble Beach in August before its specifications are announced at the Paris motor show in September.. The Z4 model has been caught on camera testing for more than a year. BMW announced the future Z4's arrival back in 2015 and revealed the concept version to preview its design last year. Powering the new Z4 will be a choice of BMW's latest turbocharged petrol engines. Alongside the turbocharged 3.0-litre engine of the M40i, pictured in the leaked images, there will also be a Z4 30i which will use a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder that produces about 248bhp. Both engines will come with standard rear-wheel drive and a ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox. A full-fat M version of the Z4 is not on the cards. The Z4 shares parts with the upcoming Toyota Supra, following Toyota and BMW's decision to co-develop a new sports car platform. Toyota Supra: latest pictures, performance figures and predictions While the Z4 will be a convertible, Toyota's new car will be a spiritual successor to the original Supra and as such will wear a hard top, as shown by spotted development cars. Inspiration for the new Supra's design has been taken from the striking FT-1 concept, first seen at the Detroit motor show in 2014.
  14. US President Donald Trump has insisted that payments to two women who say he had affairs with them did not break election campaign rules. It comes after his ex-lawyer, Michael Cohen, pleaded guilty to violating laws during the 2016 presidential election over his handling of the hush money. Interviewed by Fox & Friends, Mr Trump said the payments had come from him personally, not from the campaign. He has in the past denied knowing about one of the payments altogether. I don't care if Trump paid off a porn star' Who wins and loses from impeachment talk? Mr Trump also accused Cohen of making up stories to receive a lighter sentence. What did Trump say exactly? In an excerpt from the Fox & Friends interview, which will be aired in full on Thursday, Mr Trump responded to questions about the hush payments by insisting that they were "not a campaign violation". "They came from me," he said. "And I tweeted about it. But they did not come out of the campaign." He added that he only found out about the payments "later on". His comments contradict a statement made earlier by Cohen under oath in which he said the president had instructed him to make the payments. In July, Cohen released audio tapes of him and Mr Trump allegedly discussing one of the payments before the election. So did the payments break campaign rules? Cohen, who was Mr Trump's personal lawyer for more than a decade, admitted passing on funds to two women thought to be porn star Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal. The hush money payments were not reported to the Federal Election Commission during the campaign. The question is whether the payments were made to protect Mr Trump's personal reputation or to protect his image as a presidential candidate. Under US election rules, any payments made with the aim of influencing a vote must be reported. Cohen acknowledged in court that the aim was indeed to protect Mr Trump's candidacy, saying he had paid the money "at the direction" of Mr Trump "for the principal purpose of influencing the election". If Mr Trump were to be prosecuted over the money - not through the normal courts, because he is the sitting president, but conceivably in Congress, through an impeachment process - investigators would have to prove that he had indeed given the money to Cohen for electoral reasons. How has Trump contradicted himself? In his first public comments, back in April, about his alleged affair with Stormy Daniels, Mr Trump denied knowing about the $130,000 (£100,000) payment made to the actress via Cohen. Ms Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, alleges that she and Mr Trump had sex in a hotel room in 2006. Asked by a reporter in the press cabin of Air Force One if he had any knowledge about where Cohen had got the money to pay Ms Daniels, the president responded at the time: "I don't know." The following month, Mr Trump officially disclosed a payment to Cohen of between $100,001 and $250,000 for expenses incurred in 2016. What happens next? Any action against Mr Trump is unlikely until after the mid-term elections on 6 November, when the opposition Democrats will seek to break the grip of Mr Trump's Republican Party on Congress. In the meantime, Cohen may agree to testify to the inquiry into alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. There is no confirmation that Cohen will speak to Robert Mueller's inquiry but his personal lawyer has said his client is happy to talk

  16. Mercedes-AMG is testing its most hardcore drop-top yet at the Nürburgring, the AMG GT R Roadster, ahead of an expected sales debut next year. The GT C Roadster is currently the flagship convertible in the GT range and Mercedes-AMG was previously undecided on whether to go one further with an R version. That decision looks to have been made, however, since prototypes have been spotted lapping the fearsome German circuit. It’s clear that the roadster variant will adopt much of the GT R coupé's aerodynamic package, including the active airflow vents behind the grilles. The recognisable rear wing features, too, as does the rear diffuser. Expect the GT R Roadster to mirror its coupé sibling in terms of its powertrain, too, with AMG’s 4.0-litre ‘hot V’ eight-cylinder unit tuned to produce 577bhp and 516lb ft of torque. The roof mechanism and structural additions are expected to add only around 35kg to the kerb weight, so the roadster model shouldn’t stray too far from the coupé’s 3.6sec 0-62mph time. The worsened aero profile of the roof may reduce the 198mph top speed, however. The GT range's chassis design means that losses in structural stiffness are already kept to a minimum in the GT C Roadster. Nevertheless, it's possible that engineers may tune the Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet rival's set-up differently to the standard car to reflect the lack of a roof. The new car will be the fourth drop-top - and the eighth variant - in the AMG GT line-up when it arrives in 2019. It’s likely that its arrival will coincide with a full range update, bringing along a new cabin design inspired by Mercedes’ latest passenger cars.

  18. Russian attempts to launch cyber-attacks against US conservative groups have been thwarted, Microsoft says. The software company said Russian hackers had tried to steal data from political organisations, including the International Republican Institute and the Hudson Institute think tanks. But they had been thwarted when its security staff had won control of six net domains mimicking their websites. Microsoft said the Fancy Bear hacking group had been behind the attacks. Domain control : "We're concerned that these and other attempts pose security threats to a broadening array of groups connected with both American political parties in the run-up to the 2018 elections," Microsoft said in its blog detailing its work. The thwarted attack was likely the start of a "spear phishing" campaign, said Microsoft. This would involve tricking people into visiting the mimicked domains allowing the Fancy Bear group to see and steal login information that people use. As well as the two think-tanks, the domains seized were associated with several Senate offices and services. One domain sought to mimic Microsoft's Office 365 online service. Hunt wants 'malign' Russia to face action Trump relaxes rules around cyber-attacks US accuses Russia of 'pervasive' meddling Russia has denied Microsoft's allegations that it targeted the right-wing think-tanks. President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow was "unaware" of any attempted interference by Russia-linked hackers in the US mid-term elections. "[Our] reaction is traditional," he told the Interfax news agency. "We are unaware what kind of hackers they refer to, we do not know what this interference entails." BBC Monitoring reported him as adding: "We do not understand whom exactly it concerns, what the evidence is and what such conclusions are based on. We have no such information." He said: "We hear confirmation from America that there was no meddling in the election." Spying charges : The New York Times suggested that the two think tanks were targeted because they were former supporters of President Trump but were now foes who had called for more sanctions to be imposed on Russia. The International Republican Institute's directors include Senator John McCain and General HR McMaster who was replaced earlier this year as the White House national security adviser. IRI president Daniel Twining told the Times that the attacks were consistent with the "campaign of meddling" the Kremlin is known to have indulged in. In its blog, Microsoft president Brad Smith said it had grabbed dodgy domains 12 times in two years to shut down 84 websites associated with Fancy Bear. It said that, so far, it had no evidence that the domains had been used in any attacks. The domains could have been set up to help a future planned assault. Microsoft added that the attack activity seen around the domains "mirrors" what it saw in 2016 in the US and during the 2017 election in France. Microsoft's action comes soon after the US charged 12 Russian intelligence officers with hacking computer networks used by Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party

  20. Mercedes-Benz has released a video showing its Electric Silver Arrow concept car from the side, following another glimpse of design boss Gorden Wagener sketching out the concept ahead of its Pebble Beach debut. Set to have the covers pulled off at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance later this month, the clip, (above) pans across the side view of the car, revealing its profile while hiding finer details, although a previous clip (below) shows Wagener using a pencil to draw the outline of the car. It reveals a shape that's a radical departure from the car maker's road-going models, with a long bonnet, a sleek cockpit 'bubble' and a sloped-off rear end. Mercedes has previously showed the bold lines and exaggerated proportions of the electric concept with the unveiling of a sculpture of the spectacularly styled single-seater. The latest in a series of highly flamboyant concepts conceived under the guidance of Wagener, the car will be a one-off figurehead for Mercedes’ new EQ sub-brand, with an electric powertrain that provides performance comparable to that of the earlier W125, according to company officials. Autocar understands that the Electric Silver Arrow is set to showcase a new performance-based powertrain with more power and greater battery capacity than the earlier four-wheel-drive SLS E-Cell. That car's four electric motors produced a combined 740bhp and the lithium ion battery had a capacity of 60kWh. Next Mercedes-Benz GLE interior previewed in new sketches Officials at Mercedes' R&D centre on the outskirts of Stuttgart suggest the new powertrain provides hints at how AMG is planning to ramp up the performance of the upcoming range of EQ-badged electric cars, headed by the EQ C SUV, which is due to make its world debut at the Paris motor show in September. Stylistically, the concept draws on the wind-cheating shape of Mercedes’ celebrated streamliners with a long, sweeping bonnet, prominent wheel arches and a cabin set well back within the wheelbase. However, the look has been updated with elements from the company’s contemporary F1 cars, as alluded to within the previous sculpture by a fin mounted along the centre line at the rear as a measure to aid stability. The combination of fuller forms at the front of the new concept and the more futuristic treatment of the rear of the sculpture is meant to convey the underlying trend of digital transformation, according to Wagener. “Digital transformation, in particular, presents new challenges for us designers. We are translating intelligent technology into an emotional overall experience,” he says. This so-called digital transformation is also set to be previewed in the interior, which is rumoured to include functions from Mercedes’ new touchscreen-based MBUX user interface system, as recently introduced on the fourth-generation A-Class.
  21. Three Apple employees have been treated for minor injuries after an iPad battery reportedly exploded in an Amsterdam shop. The three staff are believed to have breathed vapours released when the battery caught fire. The incident, on 19 August, led to the shop in Amsterdam's Leidseplein being evacuated and closed. Firefighters were called and they dealt with the iPad and made sure the shop was properly aired. The shop has now re-opened. Amsterdam's fire brigade tweeted that it had attended the incident and three people had been treated for breathing problems. A Dutch media site said staff in the store had initially dealt with the fuming iPad by putting it in a sand-filled fire bucket. This reportedly quelled the fire but not before some of the potentially harmful irritants had been released. Apple news site 9to5mac said it had seen more incidents of similar faults since the electronics company had started its iPhone battery replacement programme. Apple began the replacement initiative after being criticised for slowing down older iPhones whose batteries were ageing. A consumer backlash against the policy led to it offering discounted and free battery swaps for some customers.
