  4. Measles has returned to four European nations previously seen as free of the illness, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The disease is no longer considered eradicated in Albania, the Czech Republic, Greece and the UK. "We are backsliding, we are on the wrong track," said Kate O'Brien of the WHO's Immunization Department. Measles is a highly contagious and potentially fatal illness that causes coughing, rashes and fever. The disease can be prevented through two doses of the MMR vaccine, which is available for free for all young children in the UK. Why is the UK seeing a rise in measles cases? The countries that trust vaccines the least Countries are declared measles-free when there is no endemic transmission for 12 months in a specific geographic area. Ms O'Brien said all four European nations that have lost their eradication status have "extremely high" vaccination coverage. "This is the alarm bell that is ringing around the world: being able to achieve high national coverage is not enough, it has to be achieved in every community, and every family for every child," she said. Health experts warn that lies about the measles vaccine have allowed the illness to spread in certain areas or communities. What are the numbers? All regions of the world showed an increase in measles bar the Americas, which saw a minor decline - although the US registered its highest number of cases in 25 years. Close to 365,000 cases have been reported worldwide this year, the WHO said, almost three times as many as in the first half of 2018. Dr O'Brien blamed misinformation about vaccines and called on social media companies and community leaders to provide "accurate, valid, scientifically credible information". The Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar and Ukraine are suffering the largest outbreaks of measles. What are vaccines and how do they work? Debunking vaccination myths for parents How anti-vaccine movements threaten global health Numbers of measles cases were steadily declining worldwide until 2016, when the illness began a resurgence. WHO officials said the reasons for the renewed spread vary from country to country. Some people lack access to vaccination programmes, while others are misinformed about the illness and how to prevent it.
  5. Microsoft said late last year it planned to swap out its own rendering engine used in Edge and swap in one based on Chromium, the open-source foundation used in Google's Chrome browser was well as in Brave, Opera and other po[CENSORED]r browsers. If you've been waiting to see what Microsoft is up to with Edge, you can now download an early preview build of Edge for Windows 10. Microsoft notes that much of its work so far has been on the underpinnings of its revamped browser. More visible changes, as well as broader support for extensions and the ability to manage your sign-in profile, will come over time, the company said. The swap to Chromium, Microsoft said, will let Edge do a better job of conforming to web standards. The swap also means that one fewer major browser is making a go of it outside of Google's open-source project: Mozilla's Firefox and Apple's Safari each uses its own home-grown browser engine.
  6. For those of you building a PC right now (or thinking of it, for that matter), we've found a deal you may want to check out. The Intel Core i7-9700K CPU is currently sitting pretty at its lowest ever price on Amazon in the US, and you can pick up the 8 Core 4.9 GHz Turbo unlocked variant for $350. That saves you around $60 off the list price, and about $20 off recent lows at other retailers. If you live across the pond, the i7-9700K can be yours for £360. That's a reduction of over £20. As the number-two pick in our guide to the best CPU for gaming—and considering the fact that it's normally closer to $400 / £400 in cost—any discount is greatly appreciated. Because of its excellent performance, this is also good value for money. As we mentioned in our guide, the i7-9700K is a "balancing act between price, performance, and features". Specifically, it's got more cores than the i7-8700K and has done away with the Hyper-Threading you'll find on Intel Core i9 models. That means it doesn't run as hot, saving you cash longterm on the best CPU coolers. In addition, it's "effectively tied" with the i9 in terms of performance but costs a whole lot less. Hundreds less, in fact. Put simply, "if you're primarily concerned with gaming, an 8-core Coffee Lake clocking close to 5GHz is as good as it gets". Just make sure you've got a motherboard that can handle it. If you need to upgrade that as well (or are buying one for you first build), don't miss our article on the best gaming motherboards.

  11. Archaeologists in Peru have unearthed what is believed to be the largest single mass child sacrifice in history. The bodies of 227 victims, aged between five and 14, were found near the coastal town of Huanchaco, north of Peru's capital Lima. The children were believed to have been sacrificed over 500 years ago. The discovery comes barely a year after 200 child victims of human sacrifice were found at two other sites in the country. Archaeologists told AFP news agency that some of the bodies in this latest collection still had hair and skin when they were dug up. The children show signs of being killed during wet weather, and were buried facing the sea, meaning they were probably sacrificed to appease the Chimú's gods. It is unclear in which year the incident took place. The Chimú resided along Peru's northern coast and were were one of the region's most powerful civilisations. They reached prominence between 1200 and 1400 before being conquered by the Incas, who were in turn conquered by the Spanish. They worshipped a moon god called Shi which, unlike the Incas, they believed was more powerful than the sun. Devotees regularly used sacrifice and other offerings during spiritual rituals. Excavation work is continuing at the mass burial site, and archaeologists say more bodies may still be discovered. "It's uncontrollable, this thing with the children," chief archaeologist Feren Castillo told AFP. "Wherever you dig, there's another one".

  13. Windows 10 May 2019 Update users have been hit by a bug brought in by the latest cumulative update which is causing Bluetooth speakers not to work. Specifically, this is KB4505903, a patch designed to deliver various fixes, including smoothing over issues with Windows Hello facial recognition logins, and problems with Bluetooth devices. KB4505903 is supposed to resolve an audio bug and improve Bluetooth audio quality in some respects – when using certain audio profiles for long periods – but instead it seems to have rather broken things for PCs that have an internal speaker installed. How to reinstall Windows 10 How to stop a Windows 10 update Windows 10 May 2019 Update problems: how to fix them On these machines, after installing the aforementioned patch, May 2019 Update users may find that their Bluetooth speaker will no longer connect to their PC, or if it does connect, the audio quality will be poor. A third problematic scenario described by Microsoft in its support document is that the Bluetooth speaker may connect, but the sound may come out of the PC’s internal speaker, rather than the Bluetooth device. Microsoft further notes: “Additionally, in Device Manager, you notice an entry under the Sound, video and game controllers node for Microsoft Bluetooth A2dp Source that shows a yellow bang (exclamation mark) icon.” Suggested workaround Presumably Microsoft is currently fixing this issue, but for now, there’s a workaround detailed in the support document. Affected May 2019 Update users need to fire up the System File Checker tool and use that to repair missing/corrupted files, which is evidently the issue here following the cumulative update. To do this, you need to open the command line – and if you’re not sure how to do that, simply type ’cmd’ in the search box (next to the Start button) and click on the Command Prompt app at the top. Once that’s open, type in the following, and press enter: You may have to wait for a number of minutes for the scan and repair to actually be carried out, but once it’s finished, reboot your PC. Hopefully everything should now be back to normal with your Bluetooth devices in Windows 10.
  14. Oh yes, we are talking about the most important computer component for every gamer, the GPU. This guide will be very helpful to you if you are building your first rig and you don’t know much about GPUs or other computer components (see our motherboard guide). If you plan to use your future computer to play GTA 5 on ULTRA settings but you bought too weak and cheap graphics card, you won’t have a great time playing video games. Now let’s get started with this guide. How much money do I want to spend on a GPU Which video games I want to play and on what settings You also need to be realistic you can’t spend only 150$ and think you can play Witcher 3 on ultra-settings, it’s not so cheap. Later in this guide we will talk about GPUs with best price to performance ratio. The most demanding setting is the resolution, if you want to play at 720p, 1080p, 1440p or 4K plays a great role which GPU you will buy. For VR gaming GPU is also the most important component so you should take that also in consideration when buying the GPU, but if you are going for VR the headset will also be very expensive and you would need a high budget for that. The prices go from 80$ dollars for very cheap GPUs up to 1500$+ for enthusiasts. Low-end Only for people who play older games, play very little or don’t play at all. This is best if the computer isn’t going to be used for gaming, but your CPU doesn’t have integrated graphics. Budget GPUs Good gaming at 720p and decent gaming at 1080p. Good GPUs for mediocre gamers who don’t need to play games on high settings and is satisfied with low medium settings. This class of GPUs will support games like GTA V or Witcher 3 on medium settings. Mid-range This class we recommend to most gamers because today with this GPUs you will be able to play any game on high and ultra settings at 1080p resolution. This GPUs are best buy for 1080p gaming and with this GPUs VR compatibility starts to kick in. High-end Graphics Cards for gamers who want to play in VR, 1440p and 4K resolution. VR and 1440p gaming with this GPUs will be excellent. 4K gaming is also very good but with next class it can go even better but we think that this is also more than enough for 4K Extreme Only for the craziest enthusiast who want to build the rig of their dreams. Best 4K gaming and best gaming in general with this GPUs. The RTX cards also support new ray-tracing and A.I. tech. Things you should also take into account? If you’re planning to play at 1080p you will want to get a graphics card with at least 3GB of memory, but 4GB would be ideal. For gaming at higher resolutions like 1440p or 4K you should get a card with 8GB or more memory. When you are buying a GPU, you will need to check the power consumption and based on what your card needs you will know what power supply you will buy (but we will make a guide for that soon). For example, if your GPU needs 200W and your CPU 150W then you want to buy a PSU with 500W or if you want to play extra safe 600W. You also want to check if your PSU has the power connectors to power your GPU because some cards use two eight-pin connectors, some two six-pin and some combine six and eight-pin connectors. If your PSU doesn’t have the connectors that the GPU needs, you threw your money away for nothing. Check the dimensions of the graphics card so you can make sure that there is room in the case for your GPU. Some graphics cards will also use more expansion slots (most GPUs take two slots), so if you are also buying a sound card make sure there is room for it on the motherboard and in the case. Many manufacturers are providing you with the same GPU but with different prices dimensions, number of fans, different clock and memory speeds. The fans are here for cooling the GPU, so if you won’t be overclocking you won’t need that beefy GPU with three fans. The different clock and memory speeds can make a difference in frame rates. Same GPU with a higher clock speed will be slightly faster but it will also be more expensive so make sure that you get the most of your money (that difference in most cases is very small).

  17. President Donald Trump has said the US and China will "very shortly" resume trade talks after a weekend of escalating tension with Beijing. "China called last night... said let's get back to the table. So we'll be getting back to the table," he said. On Friday Mr Trump sharply hiked tariffs on billions of dollars of Chinese imports in retaliation for fresh duties from Beijing. China has yet to comment but earlier called for "calm" to resolve the row. Mr Trump sent out conflicting messages over the weekend, at first appearing to express regret about the latest tariffs, only for the White House to retract his comments on Sunday. However, at the G7 summit in Biarritz on Monday he said Chinese officials had made two "very, very good calls" on Sunday night and that Beijing wanted to "make a deal". A quick guide to the US-China trade war The US-China trade war in charts US-China trade war: 'We're all paying for this' Suggesting his pressure had brought the Chinese back to the negotiating table, he added: "They hurt very badly, but they understand this is the right thing to do. "We're going to start very shortly to negotiate... but I think we're going to make a deal." The US is trying to force Beijing to reform its trade practices, arguing that American firms face an uneven playing field due to issues such as intellectual property theft. However, US allies have pressured Mr Trump at the G7 summit in France, warning that the trade war is threatening the global economy. Earlier on Monday Asian stock markets fell sharply over concerns about the trade war, with Hong Kong's Hang Seng index losing more than 3% before regaining ground. However, European shares turned positive after Mr Trump's more conciliatory comments. A short while ago Germany's Dax was up 0.2% while the French Cac 40 was 0.6% higher. London's FTSE 100 is closed for Bank Holiday Monday. How has the trade war escalated? On Friday, the US said it would begin the process of raising tariffs on around $250bn (£203.8bn) of Chinese imports from 25% to 30% from 1 October. The US also said fresh tariffs on an additional $300bn of Chinese goods, announced earlier this month, would now be at a rate of 15% instead of 10%. The first batch of those tariffs will be introduced in September. In a tweet, Mr Trump said he planned to order US firms working in China to move their operations back to the US, although it is unclear how he could force them to comply. The moves came after China delivered its latest trade war strike, announcing plans to hit $75bn worth of US goods with new tariffs and hikes to existing duties. How did we get here? The world's two largest economies have been locked in a bruising trade battle for the past year that has seen tariffs imposed on billions of dollars worth of one another's goods. Mr Trump has long accused China of unfair trading practices, but in China there is a perception that the US is trying to curb its rise. Sharp falls in the yuan earlier this month prompted the US to officially name China a "currency mani[CENSORED]tor", adding to tensions between the two countries.
  18. AMD did not just launch a new round of graphics cards with its Radeon RX 5700series, it introduced a brand new GPU architecture to power its Navi chips, which are built on a 7-nanometer manufacturing process. It's called RDNA (Radeon DNA), and it replaces the company's GCN (Graphics Core Next) architecture that's been driving AMD's GPU efforts for the past several years. Curious about the change? AMD just recently published a whitepaper (PDF) that covers RDNA in detail. There's not really anything new contained in the whitepaper, and Jarred already wrote about several of the finer bits back in June. However, it's a longer breakdown of RDNA and how how it compares to GCN. If you have time to read a 25-page document (it's actually 21 pages if you skip the table of contents and legal disclaimer), it will give you a sort of low-level dissection of the architecture and why AMD thinks it's better suited for the long haul. Obviously there is a fair amount of techno-babble in the whitepaper. However, AMD does a good job of explaining how things work, and it's a good read for anyone who wants to broaden their knowledge of how GPUs work, and in particular Navi. AMD also goes into a strategic overview of where it sees RDNA going from here. The 5700 series is far from the end of the road. "Thanks to AMD’s wide influence and extensive partnerships, the RDNA architecture will roll out and eventually touch nearly every part of the industry. The RDNA family will ultimately grow to include power-constrained smartphone and tablet processors, gaming consoles, cloud gaming services, and a full spectrum of gaming GPUs from low-cost to the highest performance, bringing the benefits of the RDNA architecture to millions of devices and people across the planet," AMD concludes. Much of that we already knew. For example, both Sony and Microsoft are planning to build next-generation gaming consoles (PlayStation 5 and Project Scarlett, respectively) around a custom Navi GPU, powered by the RDNA architecture. The bit about targeting smartphones and tablets is interesting, though. It's also interesting to see AMD reference RDNA spanning "low-cost to the highest performance" GPUs. As things stand right now, Nvidia's Turing GPU holds the top spot in the consumer gaming space, in the form of the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. AMD's whitepaper hints at a future version of Navi that will compete at the top end.

  20. A patient has died after developing a severe respiratory disease due to vaping in the first such death in the US, say health officials. It comes as experts investigate a mystery lung disease across the US that is linked to use of e-cigarettes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said there were 193 "potential cases" in 22 US states. Many of the cases involve vaping THC, the main active compound in cannabis, CDC experts said. The cases were reported over the course of two months between 28 June and 20 August. The person who died was "hospitalized with unexplained illness after reported vaping or e-cigarette use", Dr Jennifer Layden, the chief medical officer and state epidemiologist in Illinois, said. CDC director Robert Redfield said: "We are saddened to hear of the first death related to the outbreak of severe lung disease in those who use e-cigarette or 'vaping' devices." He added: "This tragic death in Illinois reinforces the serious risks associated with e-cigarette products." What is the illness? The cause of the mystery illness has not been identified, but all involve vaping in some form. "In many cases, patients have acknowledged recent use of THC-containing product," the CDC's head of non-infectious diseases, Dr Ileana Arias, said. Those affected had symptoms including coughing, shortness of breath and fatigue as well as some cases of vomiting and diarrhoea. There is no evidence of an infectious disease - such as a virus or bacteria - being responsible. Why do lithium batteries explode? Exploding e-cigarette kills Texas man US man killed by exploding vape pen But there is much that remains a mystery. "It isn't clear if these cases have a common cause or if they are different diseases with similar presentations," Dr Arias said. There have been 22 cases in the state of Illinois, with patients ranging from 17 to 38 years old. The 22 states affected are largely in the centre and north-east of the country, from Minnesota to North Carolina, though cases have also been reported in California, Texas, and New Mexico. Officials have ordered laboratory tests of vaping liquid samples in a bid to identify any harmful compounds. A "black market" is known to exist for THC-containing vape cartridges, which are sold legally through medical marijuana dispensaries in some states. Users in online communities have warned of the dangers of unregulated fake cartridges. Is regular vaping safe? No cause for the mystery illness has been identified - and the link to THC products is not clear yet either. Mitch Zeller of the US Food and Drug administration said it was important to understand that "we find ourselves in the early stages of these investigations trying to piece together the facts." He said the FDA was exploring whether the products were used as intended or being modified by adding something to them. The president of the American Vaping Association, Gregory Conley, said in a statement on Thursday that he was "confident" the illnesses were being caused by devices containing cannabis or other synthetic drugs, not nicotine. But Dr Brian King from the CDC's office on smoking and health warned against thinking of vaping as completely safe. "We do know that e-cigarettes do not emit a harmless aerosol," he said. "There's a variety of harmful ingredients identified, including things like ultrafine particulates, heavy metals like lead and cancer causing chemicals," he said, along with diacetyl - a flavouring used to give a "buttery" taste that has been linked to "severe respiratory illness". He also warned of the possibility that similar cases had been happening for a long time, but the connection between them had been missed. "It's possible that the reported cases could have been occurring before this investigation was even initiated," he said. Dr King said it was possible "we weren't necessarily capturing them, but now there's increased diligence in terms of the current investigation that we're better able to". At least two people have previously died in the US after their e-cigarette exploded in their face.
  21. good job boy to hear me up ?

  22. Google has shut down 210 channels on YouTube it said were part of a "coordinated” attempt to post material about the ongoing protests in Hong Kong. The firm said attempts had been made to "disguise the origin of these accounts and other activity commonly associated with coordinated influence operations”. The search giant linked its move to similar action taken by Twitter and Facebook earlier this week. However, unlike those companies, Google stopped short of explicitly saying it believed the Chinese government had been behind the now-disabled accounts. Nor would it share further details on the nature or motivation of the material it had taken down from its platform. "Earlier this week,” a statement read, "as part of our ongoing efforts to combat coordinated influence operations, we disabled 210 channels on YouTube when we discovered channels in this network behaved in a coordinated manner while uploading videos related to the ongoing protests in Hong Kong. "This discovery was consistent with recent observations and actions related to China announced by Facebook and Twitter.” The background you need on the Hong Kong protests Hong Kong: 'If we burn, they'll burn with us' Fake news is 'reinforced by false memories' A Google spokesperson would not comment when asked by the BBC whether Google agreed with Twitter’s assessment that it was a state-backed misinformation campaign, designed to undermine the protest movement in Hong Kong. The company has not said whether it planned to prohibit advertising sales to state-controlled media organisations, such as the Chinese broadcaster, Xinhua. Twitter announced it would no longer allow ads from broadcasters who were financially and editorially controlled by governments, after facing severe criticism for allowing anti-Hong Kong ads to spread on the platform.
